It was fantastic I didn t see any ghosts but I did see in 1970 S. Telex machine and lots of vintage wallpaper that s the kind of thing I get excited about thank you to George for pointing out right the actor who was going to be in the witchfinder general who was actually going to be the witchfinder general before Vincent Price was parachuted into the film was Donald Pleasants though of course it was. The most inappropriate the name doctors of all. The rarely anything pleasant about the characters that Donal pleasant played I was sure he was a very nice chap but he specialized in evil the spirit of dark and lonely water himself. Thank you George yes that would have been great casting right drop us a line if you re out there Darren ruminating upon ghosts honey Bonner s Well the rabbit that would bounce up and down on T.V. In the southwest for your birthday. Clearly the inspiration for a bit of it was Victoria ward the snooty news reader the Victoria Ward used to feature played by Susie Blake who I want to spend an hour with in this very studio and she was great fun Susie Blake s snooty news reader Goswami born in one of the Victoria Wood sketches she did as well didn t she I got what was it called it was something very similar. I thank you very much for that as well right we have got Tom But chart from sound it out records live here in the studio he s got a fine selection of music to play from recent recent releases available from the shelves of sound it out records as we speak we ll catch up with Tom very shortly but I m going to play well let s do Gavin Perry s smell of water our resident seaside folklorist and psychogeography Gavin Perry has been out and about again this week he has been looking up the folklore attached to fishing the smell of water with Gavin Perry right so I d like to talk about some fishing lawyer the sea and the invisible forces that control it have always been treated by sailors with the utmost respect. Seafaring is fraught with danger which fisherman are all too well aware of They ll put out to sea in small bore in all weathers and if a fisherman failed in his task his family could start. So it s understandable a great deal of law and superstition has evolved their own fishing and seafaring. Here s a few examples I ve collected from around our cost. No sailor would put the say if he found his earthenware washbasin turned upside down on a morning. If a fisherman is walked into his boards and sees a drone dynamo or a pig will return home and not put to say that day. If a fisherman is carrying his lines on nets to his boat a mates a woman face to face he will consider himself doomed to bad luck the etiquette to avoid this is that for a woman sees a fisherman approaching she must turn her back on him. A new ship should never go out on a Friday. Efficient have not caught anything for a number of nights they will keep the 1st fish they catch and on return in Burnet as a sacrifice to the fates. All 4 footed animals are considered own lookee worst of all is a pig. If a pick is accidentally mentioned they will stop whatever task they re doing and commence another task in an effort to reverse their bad luck. An egg is considered to be so a fisherman will not even use the word they re referred to as the produce of a fowl. To buy eggs after sunset was considered onlooking. Whistling it say his own looking whistling woman is regarded with a special dread assailable only whistle when the wind is asleep. When casting a paying out nets fisherman would sometimes quote a slit in a cocked float and he set a colony to show that they can pay for the fish. Its Own lucky to carry a pain on to a board. It s a look at to get something by reaching through the rooms of a lot of. Children row would be rough and same spelling all leaping up and down on the cliffs to try and raise a fair wind to bring the father s whole they would chant So the wind Silva and the him to move or. When ships left would be for the Greenland whale fisheries the wives and friends of the ship s crew would gather at the pay ahead and through old shows at the sale as. The membrane that covers a newborn baby s face was known as a call for the kelp. Call want to bald person on the shave all HUGE was said to protect the way from trying. To. Sleep. Seas. It s deep and it s cold air there before the Governor Perry with a smell of water and thank you to Gavin for that as ever the wonderful installment of the smell of water that will be another one on the program next Thursday hash tag folklore 1st it is B.B.C. Sport for sure here are 95 D.B. Freeview 7 to 2 B.B.C. Sounds as Wow Joining me live in the studio from sound it out records in Stockton Tom. Oh I love how you do it OK good good still thank you for coming in again it s it s been a little while but you ve. Been long. I think the last time I spoke to you was it just before records yeah I was then I think it was was No I think it was just for so I it was just it s been full on since then what I tell you I definitely was because I think you were texting into the program the next night which would have been the Thursday night to say that people had started camping out already so they start like with 48 hours they started late humping at I think 2 am and fares to Friday morning right OK so that s like then that 30 hours where I m from and how many of them were there was there was the 1st dibs to by 6 o clock on Friday morning yeah and 7 by the end of playing on Friday afternoon or bless them and then of course it went around the block and again it s all day Friday you know it s like a queue forming outside your shop you have a Record Store Day on the Saturday Yeah did you treat them kindly did you take. Basic music time and it that s decent of you yeah I think that once they ve done that they have to go to the back of the saloon you know that and then they lose their place they sneak Willis news a little late. I mean are you saying they didn t sleep outside asleep. There s a word I don t think they would use I assume they stayed awake right there all night with all intents and toilet tents and some amazing sights are like inflatable suits and survival gear to get what they wanted Yeah absolutely you would hope so yeah that really what what were they after Can you remember well of course shame is there and it was lakes there s there s Kohli s there was one release there s mountains of stuff we ve got soundtracks but they were like they were the hardcore Yeah I mean good Record Store Day All told it was good very good busy all day. We closed at 5 to 5 and was the last there was no one in the shop in fact it you know do some in the shop from 8 o clock Yeah oh wait for the dare. At $5.00 to $5.00 going on in the shop that s cause. Your losses. Made any losses or records. It was a busy day and it was a very busy day. Because I saw a few people on Record Store Day and I know it s a thing and it s a disappointing thing stuff that s been sold on you know the on Record Store Day that appearing on e Bay before the end of the actual day at inflated price that must be frustrating as it is frustrating. I mean we do monitor e-bay and such. I think this year there was maybe a list small handful not many because you can now. You can search by POR scored anyway you can do like within 25 miles and then you can source and I was not many but we always do check Yeah the vast majority of people are like that you know if you queued for 30 hours it s not to make you know 40 quid out of I think that it s going really no no I mean you the thirst the thirst 30 people in the queue we knew then you hear the regulars Yeah yeah genuine vinyl enthusiast of obsession for it that s lovely Well you ve put some crack in records for us to play and I Should we play got Jane we ve all lined up 1st of all so. Who played in. Public Service Broadcasting about the empire she was ground. It s of. The last. Of those 2 albums Yeah made into. Quite a lot of. Yeah I was a. Slow motion head is a lovely thing and was my why. Yeah so that s kind of the workings of songs from her previous 2 albums and it s a lovely thing to write B.B.C. Tees but for sure here on 95 F.M. D A B preview 72 to B.B.C. Sound. Talk about the exciting thing but. With somebody with a close connection to sound it out Rocco What s the film director Jeannie Finley who made me she made the sound it out record documentary which tons of people listening to this will have seen could be out for a few years now it s been on B.B.C. 4 as well before twice I think as a Tory there was a 1st time I saw it on B.B.C. Fox I seen the D.V.D. Yeah so you know I know it s great that it was just a surreal experience to get to previously for the Friday night and seeing light loads of my friends. Or did you sit and watch it we did yeah and I did sit down go to spell tease out one party that I did that yeah that took the S. Out Jeannie said I m a cook with the correct spelling Yeah and the baby C. Took off took the S. Out oh that s outrageous I ll tell you but they must think we live on the river to . The only explanation was fear. The only thing I saw was that the take you know concentrate on the rest of it about. Jane a brilliant filmmaker. She s had such an exciting couple of years that she s not been able to talk about on the tell is the story of she went for a job interview in. H.B.O. And it was with the creator is the show and as of good friends yeah and they were like top secret and she got the job and she couldn t tell anyone. I kind of knew HOW DID YOU GET THAT was my next question how can you. And I didn t tell anyone on and I know lots of Fran heads as well and I couldn t tell a middle. Yes I had a blast she went to film I think 950 hours of footage for and did a 2 hour documentary about the making about the making a game for business how extraordinary you know because he s from Stockton Yeah yeah yeah yeah she should spend you know a few years making a documentary about arguably the biggest T.V. Show on the planet just a wonderful it s it s absolutely bonkers Have you seen the finished film you know we saw we had a premiere and knowing him weeks ago yeah and we went down for that and it was. Really good what s it like just really funny we funny and you could see how. The people involved in the back of house it s all about back a house what makes it happen you know and all of these people are kind of like losing the plot because it s become a mega. The sure and the how to finish it because it was just becoming out of control right OK that s kind of like it s about the veriest not the main actors is that the people behind it that s really interesting or on really should not talk about. Genie I think is tuning in she was certainly tweeting earlier on she was saying can you can you play a bit of Barry Manilow for Tom and I it s usually Dolly Parton that she wants Yeah I don t mind Dolly Berry but I don t mind though nobody relationship you re not a model I m going to do it I will use. Barry Manilow Could It Be Magic chosen for you Tom but sharp by Jeannie fame led by internationally renowned film director Jeannie. Oh I know. You said The great thing about Game of Thrones doc about tree literally came out of sound it out record a live sound out and then when the that s one of the reasons I MEAN SHE S AMAZING can do anywhere because. I like to think it s all about us of course because they see her there you know the scene sounds oh yeah oh yeah because there is somebody from Game of Thrones comes in the shop and yeah Ben come to incomes and you comes back as soundtracks and such who does he playing he s our economy s name he s the commander of the blood of the Knights watch going to good star members come out and then I just Mark Benson come in for his prog rock and Ben does come in now and again this program he s got because that last time I spoke to him we ended up talking about gentle giant Oh Lord. I know you re great right it is B.B.C. 2 Darren is just pointed out what I should ve played was the Barry Manilow song I write the songs. Ironically one of the few bar him songs that he didn t have a bar in mind and I was I Write The Songs is a cove. Well genie family specifically requested Could It Be Magic and who am I to know you can t. Internationally acclaimed film director can t you think is left exactly. Right it is B.B.C. . We got to watch out from sounded our records here in the studio as well she took another one on here told me about it new so yeah I think it s pronounced nums it s Russian So there are Russian should guess crowd. Pop techno band I don t know I doubt. There are now a label called Rocket. Bristol who didn t albums by. Go to and hey Colossus and canard and all these kind of sussed like psychedelic rock bands Yeah and it s kind of like we we do it s one of our favorite levels yeah no this is lovely it is a bit psych it s a bit of space Rocky it s an album track off the off the list album is that the album s called mu OK It is a year we nearly went there with an exclamation mark. This is called a major. Live . So there is new room with a J S start of a G. And double our. Who. Russian That s call that a major What s the album called again. That s right yes M you with an exclamation point there but I ll. Thank you for that it s great that shot from sound it out records see a life in the studio with me on B.B.C. Thank you to Barry and Sunderland is enjoying the show tonight he s got Anthony Newley stuck in his head did play Anthony Newley Strawberry fair. It is easy got there for resurrecting old English folk rhymes I m sure you did a version of Pop Goes the Weasel as well says Barry he did definitely do a religion of Pop Goes the Weasel thank you to Richie. Being in touch Barry Manilow the 3rd best Barry in pop music. Yet very good was the one that struck me or any other Barry s Barry Barry Barry No Little think all the Barry s in pop music apart from Barry given Barry Manilow Barry. Think Barry Crocker seen the theme to neighbors can t be in the house you know that I made it I don t know there must be of about Barry Barry Barry Barry Barry Ryan Barry right now. Eloise Barry in Paul Ryan who is mom s from Teesside Yeah Mary and Ryan these things are all stuck in me and she was an actress until you cite the mother of Paul and Barry Rai and he you know Louise but that might not be the Barry that he s thinking of I don t know. Anyway Ritchie says that can you ask Tom Tommy . Can you ask. When it comes to new releases on vinyl which artists are particularly flying off the shelves at the moment he s enjoying a new Bill Callahan stuff by the looks of things he said modestly so long in our wonderful smog that kind of thing is that we kind of thing last week was well versed to Joy Division. Yes that came out limitation. No Gallagher a came out last week that was we had to sell 20 copies of our. Bill Callahan. So larger than the new blue Springsteen album are wow that s really good yeah been playing bits that western sky says No yes what and start by systems to start we don t know as we ve told you can t do titles and I have to look at open now I have my own fair every week it s my favorite album of the week and then I then I go on and on about and then I forget what is the week after next and stars in these western stars also known I was playing and I was thinking the sounds like the National. Is one of those things pop demand has got its got a classic sound to it yeah it s a genuinely lovely album yeah western western stars. You know Middleton. Surely is Barry White. You know he s a good point Barry. Right we re going to play with it our program here quite rapidly we re going to play another track here tell me a bit about the murder capital I don t know much about these these are these are this is their 2nd single there for a quintet from Dublin OK They postponed key a bit you can hear the influences of the bad sea influences and I think shame and savages and such. Yes. What changed. I just got it I think. It does make sense with something and then go back to it. But this is incredible this so when you listen to it a 2nd time did the 1st 3 minutes make. All right I will play this this is great I think it is the capitol is called green and blue. There is a whiff of Joy Division about. Is the murder capital. Where they re from to get there from Dublin they ve got an album coming out in August. And that will be on it when you see how much green and blue. Right B.B.C. . We are on 95 F.M. I had to have dinner now with him on the afternoon show a couple of years ago it was hilarious really funny plug and really charming Jon. I talk about like the vinyl revolution you just told me a really interesting thing which is the. C.D. s Now the format that you sell the least stuff yes lazing Yeah. We ve never really sold a lot of cities and shop Yeah but it s always been vinyl but we sell market sets and C.D. s was just don t think about it even a couple of years ago what s brought about the revolution because. I mean when gardens the galaxy came out a lot of kids came and got the concept players so it s got to say you know you have a galaxy and kids come in and do swap temps what you know steps so it s a CD dying is a former band I don t know it s one of those would we distinctly do sell less of them and the industry is a whore think sells less of them right OK. I m not a 100 percent sure I said but vinyl had its revolution C.D. s Revolution Money could possibly possibly but anyone under 30 doesn t really buy CD It s true isn t it. We give you the D.V.D.
