Gave us 3000 pounds the queen will say that peace on earth and goodwill to all is needed as much as ever in her Christmas Day broadcast a number of other Christmas messages from politicians and public figures also being published the chief executive of N.H.S. England us thanked the 400000 health service staff who were working over the festive period Simon Stephens has also praised their hard work during the services 70th birthday right throughout the year whether it's midwives or catering assistants or junior doctors or therapists or nurses or the $1300000.00 people who look after us across the country they're here for us when we need them and to resume a has written a letter published in The Daily Express urging people to put aside their differences over leaving the E.U. And to focus instead on what they can achieve together and a separate Christmas message to British servicemen and women the prime minister praises the work done after the Novacek attack in cells Bre and their role in fighting international terrorism. A charity which provides temperatures out of the homeless people in Swindon is preparing to open its doors again for the festive period Christmas cooperates around the clock for 4 days and nights on Christmas Eve has been running the charity for the last 8 years has been telling us why she wants to help but smile and some of these things make somebody feel wanted needed to give them value they're all lovely lovely people and if we can help them along the way great stuff that's what we're all here for would you agree. Yeah Welch's town centers are expecting one of their busiest days as shoppers look for bargains before Christmas Day Some stores have already started offering discounts ahead of the Boxing Day sales guy Sean as a retail expert who works in Swindon there are bargains out there to be but I think the key thing the key thing for Christmas Eve shopping is to not try and have too much left on your list and critically have a list all the tips I could possibly give I think actually having a list would be a great one and really effective way of sort of just making sure that my mind is kept on track by the turn of mince pies bake during World War 2 I think put on display after being discovered preserved under the floorboards of a hotel the festive treats which were wartime gift from a mother to a sailor son were uncovered at the last Kotel in Douglas on the art of math B.B.C. News it's 5 POS one thank you so for the Christmas Eve weather now with that it's pretty talk a hello good afternoon we have got some sunshine out there but we've still got quite a bit of low clouds mist and hill fog say I think as we head through the rest of the afternoon some of the current will tend to lift to break up if you get stuck underneath the fall for the rest of the day he's going to feel cold and temperatures generally struggling to stay highs of just 8 degrees now as we go through tonight I think a similar story to last night a lot of mixed low cloud and hill fog and that will turn things rather makea So again we could see some freezing fog patches temperatures could be close to freezing really and here we could see A Touch of Frost So a cold. Starts the day tomorrow for Christmas Day again Misty Mackey a lot of cattle think the cop will be a bit thicker tomorrow so we could see some drizzle and also I think sunshine is going to be limited for most of the day it is going to stay quiet a cost but it is going to town and who bit milder I think high some are about 11 degrees a similar story for Boxing Day draw a lot of cloud and staying out the place you live the stories you shot the music Will Guy it but I don't know that a virtual stock offering and that it just infected review week that's correct you know that welcome to Happy Christmas to you as well as our man of tech and he's here throughout the year with the works is what a tech which we do every Tuesday why every other Tuesday just after 1 o'clock and we thought we'd get we'll in the to talk about this business of Christmas technology past and present because there have been some great gifts we need to remind ourselves off and while we're doing this what I would really love is while you're listening to this can you remember the gadget Christmas present that you always wanted and did you receive it in the end and did it turn out to be as good as you thought it was going to go yeah you should absolutely text us or call us and tweet us and get involved that will be brilliant I mean the foot spa was always a fun everybody wanted to put spike in there when you got it just it was a bit feeble and pathetic with the earlier ones were either of the like had no record cleaner that was the one that my 5 members of my family always wanted from wrong Co I think it was if I remember correctly I used remote human innovations catalogue. To get whatever happened to the innovations catalogue but I even even as a youngster that's probably what started me off on this Sunday afternoons I often used to look at that and all the spy cameras and all the weird one. Things they have in there and that's probably what started me on this love of gadgets and technology it's pretty broad We're going to do that then so as we're talking about this if any of these things we talk about strike a chord with you and you think well our I remember having one of those or any other Christmas gadgets that you had for Christmas time that you wanted as a Christmas present when you got it were you pleased with it or were you disappointed in my how did it turn out let me know and if you still got it some people hang on to these things and yet some of these ones we're talking about today are worth if you got the original and you still got the box and all the bits and pieces of fortune where for a small fortune to make our way through the decade starting in 1970 and you've got a couple for sale what are they going to start with we've got to here we've got the punk system which is the video games the old 2 white lines on the screen the paddle Yeah the paddles so you had those in the company been a tone and all these other companies that you could never remember all the way through to Atari who were still roughly around the video games that started they started the whole video games Russian. Today with things like the Nintendo switch and then the other one I want to look at was the Polaroid camera that was also a 970 S. Product and what a beauty that was I love I love the Polaroid I love the fact that this was the 1st time that you could get an instant photo you press the button and it would take like 2 or free minutes for it to come and develop but they've really really gained popularity again the whole world of Instagram and social networking and posting to social networks the idea of printing and Polaroids are a popular again now you get a homeowner old printer There's a company from Germany called impossible that bought all of the old Polaroid factories from around the world they've reopened them so they're actually now producing the number Polaroid quality film because Polaroids always has a slightly off and they're not quite what you'd get from a proper developed photo but there's still something quite special about them and when they came out in 1972 the 1st Polaroid camera was 100. 90 quid which is a lot of money and a lot of eyes yeah but but the idea I guess at the time was I'm sure there were many Christmas parties at the time where people you know people were using them but it's also the idea that either with the smart phone taking a picture or so cheap because you don't have to in the old days you take them and you commit them to film when you have to print stuff out but now you're in a situation where you can pretty much choose pick and choose what you want to develop so the idea of the cost of the photo has come down considerably but so that was the Polaroid camera I'd love to hear if you got one of those original Polaroid cameras probably in the the back of your cupboard here and then it was the whole video games revolution that happened in the mid 1970 S. And it was kind of continual way free really but we started with the basic you know the 2 white lines on the screen bank scene up and. Yeah furtive going going really fast if you want to do except you and then they then they did some other games in and around that which would never quite as good as the tennis but was you were supposed to believe that line on the screen was then representing something else but it would be hard to believe for anybody under a certain age know that people were actually genuinely entertained by the 2 lines by saying up and down on the screen and you also had was one of the old age don't get any more use of got the interference and you can hear the sound the same to be whistling in and out and it would all sound a bit unusual but yeah that was the 1970 S. For many people it was Polaroid and Pong OK if you've got any memories of toys and gadgets that you had particular gadgets in the 1970 S. Because everybody was trying to do something then especially when it's cooking gadgets or was a great thing as well so give us a call of us know if you've got any memories of gadgets or you received what you asked for for Christmas that that would be like this about the 970 S. It was all right if you went out and bought your partner a vacuum cleaner I would never get away with it right now appliances appliances are safe in the seventy's I've always been told but if you went and bought your partner an appliance now I guess that you. Can't do that any more than they so they get this 970 S. With move on to the 1980 S. In just a little while and if any of this as I said strikes a chord if you want to add anything in things you remember having been bought for you we would love to hear about them please 080028 double 3 double 6 or you can text a one triple 3 star to text with the word. And the pong game in particular if you remember having one of those Let us know. The BE. The by outside . The out . Thanks. 6 to our . Was so a subject to our. You were out . Law school and. Feeling. Good. Move. Move. Relax. Greg. It's Christmas Eve just a. In case you don't believe me there you go and we'll guy it is with us now will is our man of tech and he every other Tuesday lunchtime is here to talk about which is world of tech and technology that goes on across the county some of the companies and individuals do some incredible things not just in we'll travel around the world we thought just because it was Christmas Eve a bit of fun to take a look back at some of the technology which we were being given as presents in the past we've already tackled the 1970 S. We talked about pong game with the with the very slow sometimes ball that went between 2 bats and the Polaroid camera was all the big rage back in the 1970 S. If any of this while we're talking by the way rings true with you we'd love to hear about your stories of your Polaroid camera do you still have who was asking earlier one of the original Polaroid cameras that you have from the 1970 S. If you have get in touch and let us know and if you remember anything about those old computer games from back in the day again call us now we're going to move on to the 1980 S. You picked a couple from this decade as well would be gone for a year feels hard to believe that this was the decade of tape so we've got both the Walkman from Sony the tape player portable tape player and we got the V.H.S. Recorder for us which just seems like so many millions of years ago now and I remember V.H.S. Recorder was sort of my introduction to late night T.V. I shouldn't really be watching late night T.V. In the 1980 S. But I remember working out how to record films etc via my parents one and funnily enough I was talking to N.J. A moment ago about the eighty's in the video shops and you go into it is by his parents won't be to Max My parents went V.H.S. And the shop was segregated down the middle be to max on the left V.H.S. On the right but what the eventually happened to be to Max section on the left got smaller smaller and smaller and smaller until it was a shelf and then V.H.S. Ruled the roost in video recorders probably for a good nearly 20 years but if you ever tried looking at something on V.H.S. In the last 10 years it's staggering how bad it looked yes because. Because Betamax was technically a much better system wasn't Oh yeah definitely definitely is I think the Sony that . Sony the professional version of Peter Max was used in tape right up to the end of tape we've all gone digital now in the last 10 or so years but if you go back and look at videotape recordings they look like it's like they're sort of Ruby piece of misty glass it's a very strange moment in time but I do remember and remember when video cassettes if you had them on a shelf in your home how much space they would take up the big case and everything the video case just just huge and the whole world of video recordings I once wrote a piece about video because I discovered the film the last ever film released on V.H.S. Came out in 1998 and it was a film star. Remember the name of the this is anecdotes not going anywhere but I wrote once wrote a piece about the world of video recorders and there was there was over $50000.00 videos released over a period of time if you go by pretty much anything on V.H.S. Yeah there Walkman I mean that was the big thing wasn't your portable music I mean we just accept it now we don't even think anything of it but it you know it was big business people still love Walkman still got a lot of use actually they're still a great device and and in the same way as we've had the vinyl revival did you realize we're having a cassette tape revival and I've spotted that yeah and you go into shops and him being there has a couple of shelves of tapes again and to celebrate now I think it was now 10100 now album earlier this year they released on tape for the 1st time since about $952.00 so you know it's been a while since the last one but the tape was brilliant because it was in stereo it was portable even back in the 1980 S. The battery life on one of those things would be about 810 hours see get plenty of plays of that that old tape I remember having hits of 86 with Stan Ridgway's camouflage if you can remember that song about a Marine and the other one was that 19 the Simon Fuller one of the 19 a poor class I have that was on there as well. So that was that was my introduction that was around about the time I kind of really got into music so I guess cassette tapes was my route into that and then the tape got forgotten and now we're in a world of complete you know people still buy vinyl but my favorite final statistic is that last year 50 percent of the vinyl suddenly U.K. Was never played really it's just there looking the look on the show it's. Like I can be from music lovers you know I think exactly it's interest because I remember the other thing about tape was the cassette tape was quite often see it thrown at the side of the road with. The takeover spewed out although I don't I don't know what happened they obviously somebody got frustrated as the tape of broken machine or something quite different I remember the 1st time I ever came and looked around B.B.C. Wilcher many many years ago it was all tapes and people had to get wipe and raise the tapes and rewind the tape and all of that and who remembers final thought on this switching back to when you went to the video shop if somebody didn't rely on the video and you got it next year and they hadn't or all the air was blue in my house so that didn't get the wind OK what we're talking about this Will got myself here obviously we have a Christmas eve of the gadgets from Christmas past if you've any experiences these or any things ringing true with you give us a call 080028 double 3 double So it's. Because you want to try and use with the latest now it's all of a head Hello lover and they claim it's slow going in devices on New Park Street as is true bridge coming in on Bradford road and county ways pretty busy need to Tesco the high street and souls we wrote in a slow and they're accused trying to get past Stonehenge on the A 3 A 3 coming from the Ames preacher action on the trains there are no services through West preachy to engineering some replacement buses are running between woman to intro bridge and between Westbury and chip and new trains through London Paddington for the same reason and there's a reduced timetable to and from London Waterloo trains that are running will be finishing any of the normal nights and there are no services tomorrow or Boxing Day It's not a problem call B.B.C.
