That was Jim I can toss I'm Jackie learned and you're listening to the newsroom from the B.B.C. World Service it's a scene of devastation entire buildings flattened and roads buckled by the $6.00 magnitude earthquake which struck a mountainous area of central Italy before dawn as the country lay asleep the number of dead has been steadily rising through the day at the moment officials say more than 70 people have been killed in the provinces of on burial at sea Oh and Mark A is thought at least $150.00 are still missing the mayor of one badly affected town and 3 Chase says half of it no longer exists a number of towns and villages have been affected the epicenter was close to the town of North Czerny approach 2 women in the village of accumulate say their family was trapped under a collapsed building service dogs are called to God relieved of over there you know . Nothing really of a very body to be a little bit of value one of the women is saying that she's been waiting for help for 2 hours her brother and 2 children are buried there the other says that her son 2 grandchildren and daughter in law a trapped in the debris the Italian prime minister material and sea has thanked the rescue services and says the priority is to find people still trapped we are not going to leave anybody and loner no family no village no town we must work so that we can continue in the next few hours to to find people alive under the rubble and we can give. To all these people it's peak holiday season now in Italy with many more people in the area than usual and because the quake was relatively close to the surface the damage is all the greater dozens of hamlets have still to be reached and Alisa the Laca is a journalist in Bologna or she says it's difficult for emergency services to reach the affected areas as the nation. Because the reality here is. Like those of the mountain and earth the ark way calls the landslide the wells where he pulls up for dirt and only manage a few bagels. There are a lot of people who are doing their best. Fast as they can out there to try and save as many people as well but again I ask you know a lot of people need senior this is Italy's most powerful earthquake since 2009 where more than 300 people died in and around the city of L'Aquila just to the south of the area hit on Wednesday our correspondent Jenny Hill is in Metairie Che and she joins us now to tell us what you can see their journey was capping where you are. What's really shocking about that your hair fact is that this is one of the most beautiful parts of this city so if I look one way I can see pine covered mountain sides but then I look up you see a helicopter coming down the valley. And in front of me is a scene ever asked devastation buildings completely destroyed you can have a helicopter going out to see teens here but pretty pretty. Neat 5 is there the price against time of course and the sun is starting to drop behind the hillside here which means that they're going to lose the light fairly soon just a few moments ago we were all astern facts to be really very quiet because a number of rescue workers and stops they've been trying to get into a partially collapsed building they stopped and they listened using what looked like special equipment to try and find out whether there were any signs of life coming from inside and sadly I suspect not because they have now stopped and they've resumed work using a digger on that building this building actually I'm looking at was a convent and it's badly badly damaged we're told that there were a number of nuns inside when the earth quite earthquake struck it's thought a number of them are still inside it's the same ole. But this town is a beautiful town and really very picturesque very popular with tourists we actually can't get very far into it because the devastation is so bad so I'm looking at a couple of streets there's a house just down for me which has been turned into a makeshift morgue or I've seen a body lying covered in a white sheet just nearby and of course exhausted rescue workers faces covered in dirt and dust and dazed people locals people who have got relatives that they haven't heard from still hoping that they can they can find some news and as you say It's evening now where are people going to go tonight what are they going to do . There's a sports center down the hill from the village which we're told has been converted into a makeshift overnight shelter and most of the locals I understand have been told that they should go there and actually that there aren't too many locals now stood around it I understand the most of them are now in the shelter it has been as you can imagine an exhausted exhausting very traumatic day and they've been told to go there wait for news as we drove into the village actually you could see distraught people and comforting one another and many of them of course turning out to help themselves in the rescue and people with sniffer dogs are still walking backwards and forwards you can't actually as I say get into the real center the historic center of this town we understand that some of my 3 quarters of the buildings here have been completely destroyed and I'm told that the the real historic heart of the town is very badly destroyed indeed the death toll at the moment for the region stands at just over 70 but officials are warning already that it could rise much much higher than that Jenny thank you that was Jenny Hill speaking to us from a tree Che where rescue efforts are continuing well over the last 7 centuries it's estimated that there have been between 20 and 30 very large destructive quakes in the Central App Nine's Italy's mountainous backbone as a science correspondent Rebeca mural explains many active faults occur in this region because of complex tectonic pressures. Twisting and turning the earth's crust the Appalachian Mountain range from a long list spine of Italy and it's the most seismically active region in western Europe it's constantly being pushed and pulled by geological forces there's the great tectonic plates of Africa that's crashing into Europe to the west the Charani and sea is expanding well to the east the crust of the Adriatic is slowly rotating this all combines to create a series of intricate and complex faults and when they rupture they can produce shallow devastating quakes as Dr Laura Gregory a geologist from Leeds University explains the effects are so devastating here because the earthquakes happen very shallow in the earth's crust in Italy and that's just due to the nature of the faults so they they really are quite small faults and that means that the epicenter is shallow in the crust and so the shaking was felt very dramatically right right above where the earthquake happened the results can be deadly dozens and now known to have died in this latest quake and in 2009 in lot cooler nearly 300 people were killed or back in 1915 another earthquake nearby claimed $30000.00 lives well it's impossible to accurately predict earthquakes it's clear that this is an area that's particularly vulnerable but local communities can prepare any new buildings should be constructed to stand up to tremors and older buildings which this part of history is so famous for can be reinforced but this costs money and takes time with so many buildings collapsing to rubble in this latest quake the authorities will now need to assess whether enough has been done. That was our science correspondent Rebeca morale a battle for the Syrian border town of Gerard Bruce has intensified with Turkish backed Syrian rebels saying they've entered the Islamic state controlled town for days there have been exchanges of fire between Turkish artillery and I asked mortars across the border at dawn Turkish tanks and special forces crossed the border and attacked US backed by us as strikes chelate as a Polar of the B.B.C.'s Turkish service has been following events the latest reports we have is that Free Syrian Army Army militants advancing in the center of Jerry and there are footage is coming out from the city center looks like to turn has been deserted there were no signs of any clashes so far but this is just initial phases of the war just remind us why jobless is so important javelins is treated equally important because of its jail Graffy it's right at the border and Turkey sees this area as its red line and that's why Turkey made it very clear that they would move further word to prevent any organization that they see as a terrorist organization to have a presence in this area so just explain to us clearly what that term what their aims are in this operation so Turkish officials said that the main goal is to 1st prevent any attacks on Turkish territories from Syria based organizations and also to protect Syrians rights and territorial integrity of Syria the country and the people and just to be clear exactly is that Turkey is aiming at receipts to dual purposes actually because on the one hand so-called Islamic states being targeted but also Turkey wants to contain the expansion of Kurdish militia groups why Peter. C. Because Turkey sees Y P D as an extension of the P.K. K. Kurdish militia group operating fighting the Turkish security forces in Turkey now the Syrian government and the Russians have criticised the Turkish action although they too are fighting against the I.S.I. Group this further complicates an already very complicated situation doesn't it yes it makes the diplomacy also very complicated because we only heard one line statement from Russia's foreign ministry saying that they are wary about the events at the border but what when we talk about Russia and Turkey relations we have to remind remember that last time we saw Turkish airplanes or at the border was when they shot down a Russian fighter jet shell casts a pall over the B.B.C. Turkish service you're listening to B.B.C. World Service and Stuart has the headlines as we've been hearing in the program rescue teams in central Italy are digging through rubble looking for survivors of an earthquake that killed more than 70 people Syrian rebels backed by Turkey say they've retaken most of the northern Syrian town a travelers from the Islamic state group in Iran has broken out after pictures emerged showing French police appearing to force a Muslim woman to remove clothing on the beach Yes French Muslim leader has met the interior minister to discuss the increasingly bitter row over recent years in some beach resorts on the burqini the full body swimsuit for some Muslim women the minister Ben Our cousin Irv says the bans shouldn't lead to the stigmatize ation of Muslims in the latest incident in Nice the police apparently asked a woman to remove a long sleeved tunic and reveal her arms a journalist in Cannes Matilde Cruzan told us she had seen something similar happened there I saw a woman on the beach and she was very not only that she was wearing a classic this. Her leggings and it was not virgin at them so the Buddhist nun asked the woman to take of the heat Jabba to get up the beach so I as a body sunlight and they told me that every CD really just sign a what for me that on the beach and the people say. Get out the beach eg get out friends you're not one come anymore in France we don't fun to see many more. The well I was just trying. To say that France has a long history of secularism but why has it become such an emotive it's you and Sylvan just the need is the Paris bureau chief of The Financial Times really and settling images and I think it shows the level of fear and paranoia currently across you know felt across from its has been no an unprecedented wave of terrorist attacks which ISIS claimed responsibility for and there is a discomfort and it's very French or discomfort for any conspicuous expressions of religious faith and I think you know it you know there's a context in the history there's a history behind us and and there's you know as you can see there are you know there's definitely a risk of ethnic clashes and and also a form of you know is you know for which is being you know liberated or which expresses itself. Only of the Financial Times the American University of Afghanistan is under attack in Kabul many teachers and students are reported to be inside explosions have been heard in the compound in the capital Kabul where seed must Sood from the B.B.C. Afghan service has been following developments and has come into the newsroom studio so what more do we know he's just a moment ago I was speaking to witnesses in the area they say that those put out a gunfire has told being heard going into ministry tells us that the Special Forces commander units of the police are in the area trying to clean up or the compass in the compound we understand that a number of students who were stuck in the compass have been evacuated but still there are a number of students and perhaps a promise or is that in the area they have been health ministry says that they have Afghan hospitals have received a number of wounded over a dozen for 32 and but we. Still don't know the exact number of casualties from this incident so for we we're getting some reports the gunman who entered the university building is there and this university I have been to many times myself is one of the heavily protected buildings that are blast walls airlocks we don't know if the gunmen managed to get inside the buildings and classrooms but they have definitely attacked and got to a part of the compass and at this stage you're saying we don't know how many people might still be trapped inside we don't know how many people are trapped and we don't know exactly how many people are killed and wounded so still a fast moving operation we'll hopefully get more from you in maybe the next edition of the program thank you for that was what he did Massoud from the B.B.C. Afghan service you were listening to the news room from the B.B.C. World Service in London and still has some of the other stories from our nice to us the United States and Japan have requested an urgent meeting of the U.N. Security Council to discuss the latest missile test by North Korea diplomats say they expect the meeting to take place later on Wednesday the missile launch from a submarine is thought to have traveled about 500 kilometers significantly further than similar tests in the past conjoined twins in Syria who were evacuated across enemy lines 2 weeks ago have died awaiting authorization to leave the country for specialist treatment the one month old baby boy's Moaz Nora's were brought out of the besieged rebel held enclave of eastern Ghouta on the outskirts of Damascus by the Syrian Red Crescent they were taken to a children's hospital in Damascus. American officials have indefinitely closed the Yellowstone River in Montana over concerns of a deadly parasite that killed thousands of fish a 300 kilometer stretch of the river is closed to prevent infected fish from spreading to other Waterways Wildlife workers are surveying the area to determine whether the parasite which causes kidney disease has infected other fish downstream state officials have said the closure could last for weeks or months thanks to scientists have announced a major breakthrough today the discovery of the nearest planet outside our solar system at roughly the size of the earth this new world is thought to have the right temperature to have liquid water and possibly life scientists have called it Proxima B. And they say it's relatively close to us just over 4 light years away Dr again I'm glad of a school day from Queen Mary University in London is the lead researcher of the team who discovered the planet this planet is orbiting Proxima Centauri which is 30 years of start to the sun you cannot see Proxima Centauri from the north and it's here for you have to go to the south. In the constellation of the Centaur which is why it's called and or. 4.2 light years from here it means that if we send the radio message or a laser beam or something like picks for years to reach there and if we want to get the answer back we'll take 4 more years so it's not I mean cosmic gives them so it is the next thing that it's beyond the solar system so it's really nearby and do we know what it's like there what conditions are like that No and that's a very important thing that we need to be sure we understand what we know for sure is that video and have a good idea of the mass of the planet we suspect it's the rest you know but beyond the if we don't know much about it we know it in the habitable zone so it's not close to the star that it would be roasted or too far away that would be frozen so it potentially can support that merit like climate but that's only potentially it's within the. it's plausible that the plan it's house an atmosphere and maybe house he was like when it but we don't know anything up whole about would do use yet and i realize it this is getting a little ahead of ourselves but if it is in the habitable zone that the goldilocks zone where it's not too hot in it's not too cold might it be a realistic option for life off earth's well of us so openly if we have to scapes on where it's the best option or we have so far because it's the nearest one well with or know where the conditions or of of this but it will be again these all the parents actually hold that blotted formed and how that star on the pilot think direct but over the lifetime of the blah know now obviously you've been working on this for some time and from what you're saying to us there's a lot more work to be done but how excited are you by what you're revealing today we start the to work on these butts hope me for years of all which means bird we stuck to the all see the signal all bill being are puts pepa to get more telescope that train to cop for a meat that basically did steer with news but they did come pain but and they all did their own and cult from that gives sort copying from sulking that's other blathered so we read really really excited i'm growing up we want the to explain by a happing were you think put the last few months it's i meet of an i'm sorry it is you do ation which we near that result we would like to pull communicate the but we call them so you know sent its kind of what he leave out these point dr d.m. I'm lot it as school day or of queen mary university a very excited astrophysicist as who were in garza dobbs the world's worst has been close to after the last 15 animals were moved by an international charity 14 old them have been taken to jordan a bengal tiger is on his way to south africa and our correspondent here lands nell witnessed his departure this is good bye there's ease the only tiger in gaza is about to leave it soon this here Orange cat will be taken from his cramped cage here is new in Hong Eunice is the owners just crouched down to feed him his last snack through the bars the Tigers tucking into chickens which is devouring whole Mohammed a waiter can no longer care for the tiger or forty's huge food bills. And I'm sorry I didn't did I have a swan it's the worst day of my life to be separated from this tiger Mohammed says he lived with me through 3 walls he saw disaster and terror he had difficult nights like all of us like me. And a good trombone Mohammed shows me empty enclosures where he once had a chimp a wolf and crocodiles all smuggled here dozens of creatures died when he couldn't reach the zoo during the last conflict between Hamas which controls Gaza and Israel afterwards his much a taxidermy displays led to this park being called the world's worst zoo a fair asset the lyin been no matter. How Oh yes there's a tiger. In Carney Eunice at the Mohali family home the children show me their plastic zoo animals and I tell them Lizzie's is moving to South Africa Akram Harley says daily life is a struggle neither he nor his 6 children have ever seen life outside Gaza and they're no
