News. And welcome to Tech 10 chill weekly updates on all the hottest news from the technology business Hi Mary Catherine Johnson this week we'll be looking at the biggest hit in the gaming world for years fortnight and asking what it means for the future of games but also find out how old mentored reality can be about sound as well as vision and we'll meet a musician who police say I could help craft a number one hit joining me this week is b.b.c. Technology reporter Chris Brooks Hi Chris everyone and my very special guest is Cousin McDonald video games editor at The Guardian newspaper welcome Plaza Hi there Here's a flavor of what's in the show so I put it in me woods and then I switched it back oh. Something's happened once the ai spits out or exports a song and the artist makes changes or or suggestions to that piece then the neural network can learn from that suggestion all of that coming up but 1st listen to this . Lots of shootings and explosions there that's part of the trailer for the video game fortnight battle royale from Epic Games which has become a worldwide sensation in the past few months it involves up to $100.00 players at a time parachuting onto an island and washing it out until there's only one survivor but this week fortnight which has become an obsession with millions has become the subject of a court battle at the makers of player unknowns battlegrounds o p u b g which looks very similar to phone I was around earlier are accusing Epic Games of copying their ideas and they're seen an injunction in the South Korean courts now we've seen plenty of shooting and multiplayer games before so what's the appeal a fortnight that's maybe so but we've got a top panel of game is here. And notice to discuss all of this the McDonald has been a games journalist for a dozen years or so Chris Fawkes has been spending many hours playing fortnight between his part time job on the b.b.c. Tech desk. Is writing a piece for our tech news site as an infrequent gamer on spending a fortnight playing fortnight so let's start with a word is different about for an eye for the 1st what's the game about what you have to do the game is kind of combine several really popular things that have existed in other video games that have broken out there shooting there's building like in Minecraft there's dancing and fun and silly stuff like in road blocks and other games that have been popular with younger players I think it's just a really good confluence of all those things and it's just really fun player nuns battlegrounds which we'll be talking about later that popularized the battle royale start with a 100 players finish with one player. But then I think fortnight is just more fun it's more colorful player and battle grounds is quite gritty it's quite realistic it feels quite military and I think that what fortnight has where for an eye has the edges it's more accessible. Has it worked for you you're as I said you're not really a hardcore game you're anything but and you said to and what do you find well the last time I played a computer game it was in my twenty's and that was Team Raider and so I'm now in my forty's I thought I'd give fortnight ago and get an understanding of what all the fuss was about and I'll be honest I kind of got into it fairly quickly and I think for me the appeal of it was essentially competing against myself in order to better my school I think were nice but when I initially got into playing the game the best I managed to get 2 was about a position of 60 out of $100.00 in Battle Royale and then after a few attempts and an especially once I got onto a console I managed to get to a position of 17 and so I find that I keep dipping in and out of the game in order to see if I can better that position I don't ever expect to get what is known as a victory victory Royale where you actually do win but I'd love to be 17 I believe and you probably know you can do it with a bit coaching Well I've had Chris as my as my coach and you have given millions Titans Chris there have been concerns that it is too addictive that teenagers in particular are spending hours online are you not quite a teenager but have you found it massively addictive you worried about your addiction I don't think video games are necessarily addictive but they're fun to play and of course people want to do things that are fun what's good for me is there's a social aspect I play online I go in a squad with 3 of my friends we meet a few times a week online and play together in your own voice chat talking to each other so it's a social experience as well you're not just in your room on your own and my strategy is always in some of the crates you can find a bush and you can just dress up as a bush. And so even if you're not very good at shooting you can still get to the end the building is hard because Origen it yet buildings important as well you have to put up some defenses collect wood and build the walls around yourself if people start shooting at you so there's a lot more to it than just shooting and also there's. Much violence and even though it's a shooting game is all there's no blood and if you get shot you just be moved up by like this laser so it's quite cartoony. We've got this court case underway as far as I can see for not actually acknowledge that player unknowns battlegrounds p b g was an inspiration it did indeed and I think that we'll see before the end of the year several other games are going to come out with Battle Royale mode because everybody wants a piece of this action for now is making you know millions a day at this point so I think that the video games industry also has a kind of long history of people sharing inspiration and games riffing off other games and I think that really the idea of 100 down to one is not in itself a particularly original idea probably no player on those bargains is not the 1st game ever to do it's the 1st game to do it in the way that fortnight in p.b.j. Do it and some things just the time is right isn't it for them to catch fire. I think so we are now at the stage where everybody has the Internet on the phone when I was playing online games in my you know early teens everything would disconnect every hour you know broadband would not work you know half the people were on dial up modems now online gaming has been something that really didn't really properly work until 5 years ago when everyone had broadband and now you can do on your phone it just makes things like social gaming online gaming involving 100 people much much easier and easier to run for the developer as well of course the Christmas model is the business model is quite good as well because the game is completely free to play the only thing you have to pay for if you want to are cosmetic skins so if you want to change the way your character looks or you want to get a silly dance move you pay for that and people are paying for that millions and millions of dollars refund away from 15 and cares if the. Are you going to carry on playing this or is this is been an interesting experience it's been an interesting experience and I think I probably will continue to play and I think. We get very excited about games there's a huge amount of hysteria and then people move on is that going to be the case with all night or is it going to be still big a year from now absolutely people will move on I would say to any parent he's worried that their kid is spending too much time and for not it's just passion it'll fade the next thing will come along you know in the same ways that a child might want to watch 17 episodes of their favorite t.v. Series in a row and you wouldn't let them because that's you know not good parenting if they want to play for an eye all the time that's fine that's just passion passion is imputing. Let's have a look at a few of the week's other big tech stories with Chris folks and Chris Samson as one of battle over how long it will have to update its phones for Yes So this is about if you buy a new smartphone How long should you expect to get software updates for it because software updates kind of course fix newly discovered flaws and keep your find safe well a Dutch Consumer Association the consumer and to Pont went to great organization there and I thank you. They said that phones should be updated for 4 years after they go on sale or for 2 years after they were last sold so they took some some to court some sun for its part said It took security seriously it always guaranteed updates for the 1st 2 years after a phone was released and had clear information on its Web site in the Netherlands and the court sided with some song it said it couldn't order some son to update phones for several years because that would relate to a future action that means we don't know what security flaws might be discovered somewhere down the line and therefore we don't know what security patches may be needed and you couldn't necessarily guarantee that all be fixed right and we got another story from the games were wise a game called active shooter being withdrawn Well active shooter as the name suggests was a game that let you run around in a school shooting it teaches it was a on the steam video games store and the description said it was a school shooting simulation and let you slaughter as many civilians as possible now on the message board the developer even suggested he would add models of children to shoot at although he later said that was a joke the game obviously has been criticized for being in bad taste. And antiviolence charities have said it was disgusting because it was capitalizing on the recent trend of school shootings in the us it's now been taken down from the steam store and valve which runs steam said the developer is a troll where the history of customer abuse and publishing copyrighted material and manipulating user reviews however not everyone is happy the game has been reviewed every move to some people say people should be less easily offended because they don't and what's your take on this is pretty mean a bit of a story for you as a games journalist certainly has I mean. Really it's it does leave you speechless the person think 2 things worth saying about this is that the game was never actually for sale so no one was able to download and play it with John before it was ever put on. And secondly this developer is one person who has a history of doing things that presumably they consider terribly provocative an edge and the rest of us would consider disgusting Yeah it does highlight a problem with steam and with the vast number of video games being released on p.c. And on mobile there's not very much curation and so you can end up in a situation where something really disgusting like the slips through the net and could've ended up on sale I think the responsibility lies with steam and the other people the other companies that run store fronts to make sure that the stuff is curated and you don't get some troll making something disgusting and putting on sale and Chris one more story why could it soon be expensive to use Facebook and Whatsapp in Uganda Well the government in Uganda plans to impose a somewhat controversial tax on whatsapp Twitter Facebook and the likes it's been dubbed the gossip tax because the president there said social media sites encourage gossip the daily tax will be $200.00 shillings or that's about $0.05 or 5 pence here in the u.k. And it will come into effect on the 1st of July but people aren't exactly sure how they will charge people this tax there are about $23000000.00 mobile phone users and Uganda of which $17000000.00 access the Internet on the phone but the government said it didn't want to restrict Internet usage by putting a tax on Internet usage only on the social media sites because the Internet is used for education research and reference quite difficult to work out how it's going to be pleased you're listening to Texan on the b.b.c. World Service with Rory Callinan Jones in a moment can a hit single composed by artificial intelligence the far away. Now many of the most respected brains in technology will tell you the Org meant it reality where the real world is overlaid with the digital world is the next big front here in how we use computers this week we dispatched Dave really to a room full of people who firmly believe that almost all of the companies that are or minted World Expo in California are focusing on what you can. See but they found one business that wants to control what you hear he spoke to Dave Cannington co-founder of new here are you here is an intelligent hearing company. And i.q. Buds are essentially intelligent truly Wallasey buds they give you the ability to control how you hear the world around you and connect to your digital devices and also blend those 2 worlds so there are essentially a hearing or mentation product that you know you think of the abouts no longer you just need music in particles you can do some amazing things with the about an i.q. But it's a very good example of that so I put it in the woods and then I switched it back oh . Something's happened you basically gone into orbit it hearing so I basically set these up for a restaurant mode and what it's doing is basically dropping dropping the ambient noise and elevating my speech it's very easy for you to focus on my conversation it's making you much clearer I can see that but your voice isn't quite your voice is it's it's it's hard to describe you can't hear this for themselves but your voice is almost like we're talking down. An Internet call that's kind of going a bit warbly sometimes explain to me what the technology is inside these here parts that making the filtering work so there's a lot that goes into this technology of these 2 microphones and each This is Speaker it's 3 boards 3 microprocessors 2 antennas a battery it's taking speech and it's isolating and dropping all that ambient noise Oh I've just started to music in my ear by touching out all happening. That's a custom tap touch of work so you basically play pause music turn the world off turn the world on fast for you do lots of things with a tap touch it and so with new technology we often talk about the killer feature turning the world off it's probably the best killer feature I've heard in any piece of technology ever kept at the right but. The general illiteracy. Weld off. Yeah I'm I'm now in a very muffled state. Yeah I can't have a gun. Back in the world all right in the world of the world is bad for people who hard of hearing what is this technology during the hearing aid would most the difference that's a really that's a really good question for starters it's not a hearing I brought We can't call you hearing aid we don't have it approval but it's using to pretty sophisticated hearing technology and it is what we call it hearing about and it's not really designed for people with to be hearing loss hearing aids do a very good job of that you need to go see an audiologist Having said that you know if you've got a little bit of mild to moderate hearing loss you struggle to hear in certain situations all locations
