President Trump has said he accepts the American intelligence community's conclusion that Russia meddled in the 2016 us elections contradicting comments he made at the summit on Monday with Vladimir Putin Mr Trump claimed that he had actually meant to say in Helsinki that there was no reason to think Moscow wouldn't interfere in the u.s. Here's our Washington Correspondent David Wallace President Trump was under intense pressure to account for remarks that stunned leaders around the world and incensed a senior members of his own party standing next to lead a mere Putin on Monday he failed to tackle the Russian leader on allegations of meddling in the 2016 election reading from notes the president said simply that he had misspoken when he said he didn't see any reason why Russia was to blame for the meddling the president went on to assert that he had full faith in his own intelligence agencies something he seemed hard hearted about on Monday and added that his administration was taking strong action to safeguard the security of the u.s. Hello and welcome to business matters I'm Roger hearing coming up on the program today making sense of what really happened in Helsinki Donald Trump revisits what he said about his trust in President Putin also finding a parking space in Hong Kong the hard way and the new head of Goldman Sachs we'll see you now. Or at least he will when he's finished his set a little known connection between club deejaying and banking and I'll be joined throughout the program by 2 guests on opposite sides of the Pacific Jasper Kim author of the book persuasion the hidden forces that influence negotiations and founder of the Asia Pacific Global Research Group who's joining us from Seoul Jasper a very good morning to you Hi good morning good to have you back with us and across the other side of the Atlantic Alexis Goldstein activist and financial reform advocate who's joining us from Washington Alexis good evening to you good evening Rachel Rachel what I don't know. Anyway let's proceed with what some pretty extraordinary going on in Washington the way you are extraordinary press conference by the man who never ceases to surprise Donald Trump However he was doing something very unusual and she was day at the White House he was trying to say what he said 24 hours before in Helsinki after a summit there with President Putin of Russia now it was in relation to the consensus amongst u.s. Intelligence agencies that Russia had interfered in the 2016 u.s. Election and Mr Trump apparently saying he didn't believe them well here's what the president had to say on Tuesday I thought myself very clear by having just reviewed the transcript now I have to say I came back and I said what's the big deal so I got a. Transcript I reviewed it I actually went out and reviewed clip of the answer that I gave and I realize that there is a need for some clarification it should have been obvious I thought it would be obvious but I would like to clarify just in case it wasn't in a key sentence in my remarks I said the word would instead of what. The sentence should have been I don't see any reason why I wouldn't or why it wouldn't be rushing. Just to repeated the word would instead of word. And the sentence should have been and I thought it would be maybe a little bit unclear on the transcript or unclear on the actual video said should have been I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be Russia. Sort of a double negative. So you can put that in and I think that probably clarifies things pretty good but. I have won numerous occasions noted our intelligence findings that Russians attempted to interfere in. Unlike previous administrations my administration has and will continue to move aggressively to repeal any efforts and repel we will stop it we were appellate. Any efforts to get if you're in our elections we're doing everything in our power to prevent Russian interference in 2018 and we have a lot of power President trouble even more bizarrely in the middle of all this all the lights briefly went out and then came back home again. In our intelligence agency it's just a must we did say. Ok you guys Ok Well people are carrying clue to the Democratic woman of Virginia at least in his. To all this he's vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee which is investigating Russian interference in the presidential election and speaking to reporters he made clear he didn't believe Mr Trump's comments were credible I don't accept the president's comments today if you want to make those comments he should have had the strength to make them in front of lamb or Putin this is a president who basically acted weak in front of the Russian leader. In front of the whole world so that we are strange times in the White House in Washington at the moment Alexis you're there in Washington I mean let the park the idea of what you actually think did go on between President Trump and President Putin how do you think this is now working in Washington because what we have been told yesterday was that Donald Trump's comments that pretty much united people on both sides of the aisle against it. I think that's right although you know we haven't seen a sort of legislative response that would have been binding to sort of you know maybe force a different path one thing that I have seen reported within the last 2 hours that's interesting I've only seen it reported in Vanity Fair but according to Vanity Fair chief of staff John Kelly basically like went against Trump and tried to lobby the Republicans to chastise him in order to get Trump to issue this very bizarre statement that you just played walking back his comments I mean it is very bizarre in the whole thing just the ways in which it was phrased what was interesting was he was clearly reading from a prepared statement which. He doesn't very often do a little Basically he was talking outside that as well right yeah I saw a different part of the transcript outside of the audio that you played where he says I accept our intelligence community's conclusion that Russia's meddling in the 2016 election took place could be other people also a lot of people out there so he's sort of like already going off script even in that one press conference just but what do you make of all this well I mean it's very interesting I mean on the one hand I mean what Trump did with Putin is not too different from you know how he acted in front of the North Korean leader Kim Jong un basically trying to create for the best friends forever type of our ambience and then worry about the details later in the North Korean talks the details haven't quite caught up to him but you know what these talks with Putin with the intelligence communities watching and listening to his every word I mean could definitely feel sort of the blowback and so he's trying to basically recalibrate what he said with the double negative comment that we're just out of interest I mean obviously we have had the Singapore summit as you say with Kim Jong un and what's happened since in where you are and in the region where you are how seriously now do people take Donald Trump and his diplomatic initiatives do they see them as being. Major moves in diplomacy or perhaps something else something to do with. Trying to achieve some try to look as if you're achieving something on the world stage you know I mean I think here in Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia too to some extent is that you know this region is really more familiar with strong arm to rulers in its recent history compared to maybe Western Europe of United States and so when they see Donald Trump acting trying to be tough and strong in front of other leaders Well South Koreans other people in northeast Asia they might say ah this kind of reminds me of the not so distant past but what is strange and ironic is that you know North East Asia and in many respects looks to the west for leadership and now is sort of going back to the future when the u.s. Leader is acting like how we acted our leaders acted decades ago so what do we make of this it's very confusing you know what do they mean we do that do they think the world has changed the world order is changed or do they think this is perhaps just one man and maybe you know when he goes there will be someone else in the White House and a normal service will resume where the perspective Donald Trump is sort of like an anomaly amongst previous u.s. Presidents So that's the one issue and then the 2nd issue I think is that you know here I mean with the confusion culture driving a lot of the forces here you know relationships in korean it's called in mc is everything and so people really sacrifice a lot of short term gain in the potential long term game of relationships so converting these poker chips into something else of value so that's sort of the perspective here is that relationships well maybe don't trump is trying to forge a relationship with with Putin but the question is Is Trump being used by Putin Well that's a question we can't really answer at the moment but thanks to both of you let's bring ourselves up to date with all the latest headlines now with Jonathan I support President Trump has said he accepts that Russia did try to interfere in the 2016 u.s. Elections directly contradicting his assertion made after his summit with President Putin Mr Trump claimed that he had actually. Meant to say in Helsinki that there was no reason to think Moscow wouldn't interfere in the u.s. Yemen's exiled President Hadi has acknowledged that the Saudi led military intervention to restore him to power was taking much longer than he had hoped and celebrity Brazilian plastic surgeon has gone on the run after a woman died when he gave her injections to enlarge her buttocks and the u.s. Television adaptation of Batwoman is to become the 1st live action superhero series with an openly gay lead character Jonathan Franks now have you ever been standing waiting in a queue at an airport trying to get through security or possibly waiting in a cramped departure lounge contemplating being squashed on board a flight with people you'd probably rather not spend several hours with well there's a whole business dedicated to people helping people avoid the airport queue altogether and apparently it's on the rise as our business correspondent Theo Leggett has been finding out that one of the aviation industry is biggest annual events the farm International Air Show here in the u.k. . The Jets I'm standing next to is a Gulfstream g $500.00 and it's an executive jet honestly it's a thing of beauty it's small it's sleek the Wings have this sort of mirror effect on the shiny I can see my face in the So let's go up the steps again with chrome polished handles so let's go into the cockpit 1st of all now obviously this isn't where the passengers will set but the pilot has to have comfort as well for the pilot's seat finished in leather and the console is brushed nickel I'm told so no expense there but if we go into the passenger accommodation it's like walking into an elegant living room there's a marble effect draw the television go a little bit further into the back. Again another television sit down on the seat now on most getting into a seat is really quite a painful thing to do there's no leg room you've got the seat of the person in front of you jammed in your face well here. I've got a nice armchair with a foot rest and I can stretch my legs out and see a nice 27 inch television now that really is quite lovely and of course if I fancy some refreshment there's a cabin crew on hand now this aircraft it will fly 8 people up to 5000 nautical miles so it'll take you from London to Los Angeles but of course this kind of luxury and convenience does come at a price out and try to see year of private flight we started private flight 10 years ago the demographic of the customer who flies by private jet has really changed over those 10 years the market has opened up the customers got younger Our average customer is only 40 years old but we've also seen more families fly as people of void the main airports and on the corporate side we've seen over those 10 years a big shift away from the banking industry it's no longer just hedge funds and banks who are flying by private jets it's a lot more wider spread through our industries biotech food and drink and of course sports and entertainment and why do people fly by Executive Jet What is it they're trying to get away from well I think it's trying to save time it's not really the luxury or it's the time saving and for a business it's just a simple mathematical equation where you look at the cost that really rates of the people you're flying around your executives your board level and you make the calculation do I want these guys at the queues at security at Heathrow in j.f.k. Or do I want them hitting 2 or 3 business meetings in a day and back with their families in the evening rested for the next day now when we look to the leisure market again it's about saving timing and it's having quality time then with the private jet we found that people enjoy the journey again you know it's hopping back to the classic days of aviation Where is actually a pleasure to fly so give us some figures if I wanted to travel from London to Jeff k. Bye. Private jet How much would I have to pay and how would that compare with taking a business class seats on a conventional airline so for your trip from London to j.f.k. Return to New York you're looking at a cost of $80000.00 However there's 14 seats from that size of aircraft so your when you charter an aircraft the aircraft is yours it's the whole aircraft and you can fill it with how many passengers you want so when you're comparing it to 1st class and business class it is comparable if you're filling the cabin but that's not the average private jet trip these projects on flying for 14 hours on average to fly into one hour or 20 minutes to short runways where airlines don't service so passengers can get closer to their destination or they're flying at a time when their lines don't Adam twiddle chief executive of Private Fly there now it all sounds rather wonderful but I don't think my bank manager would let me try it perhaps you'll be a bit more generous by being here Leggett there are international Asho and I have to tell you he went there not by private jet but no I'm guessing Alexis you're also the person who most of the time fly by private jet all those who have been every time Oh you must mean it here you surely know I've never been on the private jet I did business class but was like Ok. I thought I know I actually said sort of shouted out loud when he said oh it's just $80000.00 pounds right now dollars. I was trying to do the math and that still like 5700 a person yes I mean do you feel the cabin yes quite so just but what about in South Korea I mean I do do people use the executive jet. Not really but I mean I imagine in China nearby I mean it's not the rise of billionaires there then people are going to have their own private Gulfstream and so that would be very nice because you know just as I mentioned the peace economics and also sort of the you know the glamour of it all I mean a lot of this is just a show so I came here by my Gulfstream So I just said. A powerful signal to the markets or competitors and what not but you know I mean I think you know this is just sort of the wave of how the markets are going but it's basically like Uber bucks for jets and I think when people own their private jets they'll be able to rent it out to other soon what indeed and that has gone on I mean there are certainly these services where you can you can buy a share or something I think you can you can put yourself in a position where if you're in a particular place you can call up a jet from a jet service and it's not quite so expensive but but surely become big companies like Samsung with the big companies like that in South Korea they must use these a little and well even if they do they have to be very very careful about it because there's all this backlash with these big C.E.O.'s and sort of their abuse of power with lower employees or you know with misuse of funds and you know the curren
