Made Rover vehicle g to be sent to Mars in 2020 has been named after the British d.n.a. Scientist Rosalind Franklin her work played an important role in decoding the basic unit of life but she died aged just 37 and never gained the recognition of her male peers the British astronauts Tim peak revealed the name after a public call for suggestions garnered nearly 40000 signatures from across Europe and he says it's a fitting tribute Roslyn's work as a great British scientist on understanding and unlocking the secrets of d.n.a. And the double helix has furthered our knowledge and understanding of life on Earth fundamentally Exo Mars is searching for life on Mars subsurface organic molecules is a really appropriate name for this rover and that's the latest b.b.c. News. Thanks very much you listening to the newsroom from the b.b.c. World Service where the all of a Conway the British prime minister has returned to Brussels to ask for changes to the deal that she agreed with the e.u. Last year to resume a has been forced to seek new concessions after British M.P.'s overwhelmingly rejected her original plan and one of her ministers David living 10 indicated she still hopes to get an agreement almost nobody wants no deal and across which they know the harm that that would do to our economy but that means part has to vote for a deal because otherwise under Article 50 the European treaties the treaty stop applying to the u.k. Which is out of the e.u. Automatically end of March this year Parliament regardless of which political party you come from every m.p. Has a duty to his or her constituents to take responsibility for a decision and get behind a deal that allows us to leave the e.u. In an orderly fashion deliver on the referendum but protecting jobs investment and living standards in this country at the same time in the past half hour the Bank of England has said it expects economic growth in the u.k. This year to be the lowest in a decade partly as a result of the uncertainty over Bracks it so what has to resume a want from Europe Rob Watson is our political correspondent Downing Street informs us that she's basically going to the European Union to say look here sir I know we reached this deal in November and I said it was the best deal possible but you could see it didn't get through Parliament but if you make some changes to the backstop that's the way of avoiding a hard border and Ireland and all possible circumstances I think I may be able to get something through so that's her pitch I mean we're being told that she hasn't come with some magic silver bullet saying here's the solution but to make that pitch you help me and maybe I can get something through however European leaders are reluctant to reopen negotiations particularly since there are no guarantees that British M.P.'s will endorse any revised plan only today the leader of the Labor Opposition Jeremy Corbyn said his party would support a deal if it kept the u.k. a. To the Customs Union something Mrs May has so far ruled out but the German chancellor Angela Merkel was more optimistic saying she was sure Britain and the could find a way out of the current deadlock that mustn't be in ticketed on to spin markets have to protect the integrity of our single market that's very clear but we also want solutions which are important and necessary for our member island because we are aware of the fragile situation when it comes to the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland the British Parliament is also interested in finding suitable provisions and I believe we can find solutions without reopening the withdrawal agreement but just for a game and I had a commission spokeswoman Margarita skin us read out a statement which made clear the e.u. Was not willing to renegotiate their withdrawal deal so where does the stand let's speak to our Europe correspondent Adam Fleming Adam has anything changed as a result of today's talks yes it has actually there's now a process for the 2 sides to speak to each other and try and find a way out of this deadlock what does not change though is the 2 sides positions to resume a in the British government still want to make changes to the withdrawal agreement which includes the backstop perhaps adding a time limit or an escape clause or placing it with something altogether and the e.u. Continues to say that's just not an option that document is closed where they do both agree though is to look at the other parts of the Braggs deal or pay piece of paper called the political declaration which sketches out the shape of the future relationship will be a road map for the negotiations which will take place after brags that day about a permanent future partnership and that's going to be upgraded to show more ambition and speed about getting that future partnership in place the idea being that means that you're less likely to ever need that backstop which is can which is contained in the withdrawal agreement but there is there anything in that which could win over those people who voted down in the British Parliament the original deal the problem is the political declaration is not lead. Binding so it's aspirational and it's not particularly detailed and those are 3 things that the members of Parliament at Westminster say well that proves that's not really worth the paper it's written on so they will still be pushing for legal guarantees in the withdrawal agreement although one wonders Are there enough waverers who will be convinced by this and actually once they see the detail and they see it written they'll be convinced by it and the backstop will feel like less of a big issue of course what the e.u. Would like trees are made to do is to effectively turn her back on the extreme brags the tears in her own party and reach across the Houses of Parliament to other parties and embrace more a closer future relationship with the e.u. Than the one she's been pursuing thus far yes such as that advocated by the Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn today at the moment though to reason may seem to be rejecting that So is it just a case of going over the same ground and saying who blinks 1st well they are going to go over the same ground just in a slightly different way or actually know in a way that they were doing before when they had the chief negotiators talking to each other during the negotiations because Stephen Barclay the minister who looks after Briggs in the u.k. And Michel Barnier the chief negotiator for the e.u. Are going to meet on Monday for talks in the French city of Strasburg where the European Parliament will meet and then to resume Asian called Juncker have committed to meet again before the end of February so that is when I suppose we'll know if this new process that's been started today has borne any fruit flamming in Brussels thank you now should Facebook be allowed to collect data from your whatsapp messages or Instagram posts only if they get explicit consent that at least is the view of regulators in Germany who have ruled the social media giant has been abusing its position in the market in terms of collecting data Balin correspondents Damien Maginnis has been following the investigation authorities here in. Many argue that Facebook has been abusing the dominance it has in the market here it says unlike any other social media site it has a market dominance in Germany 23000000 users so competition authorities say there's almost a monopoly and what Facebook is accused of doing is collector data from 3rd party apps including ones atones such as Instagram or whatsapp and also tracking people and collecting data from people who are not members of Facebook through things like a Facebook Like button or share buttons on websites so that people who are not members of Facebook might have had their data collected also by face but without realizing now this ruling says that what Facebook has to do in future is to get the consent of users before collecting this data it also says that if a sport uses say that they don't want to have this data collected they should be allowed to carry on using the service so it's being seen as a ground breaking ruling Facebook says it's going to appeal and it says that the German authorities don't appreciate the competition that Facebook is under in Germany and that the ruling is unfair so we've not seen the end of this because the ruling doesn't have legal status as yet but the German authorities say they're giving Facebook a few months now to come up with an alternative system but the next stage really be to see where this appeal goes and there was Damien McGuinness in Berlin this is the newsroom from the b.b.c. World Service Chris has a head lice the Bank of England says it expects economic growth in the u.k. This year to be the lowest in a decade partly as a result of uncertainty over breaks it the French motor manufacturers is investigating a sponsorship deal involving its former chairman Carlos Cohn has been held in Japan for alleged financial misconduct and as we've been hearing in a landmark ruling Germany's anti trust agency has said Facebook is abusing its market dominance by collecting information about its users without their knowledge or consent Canada is being sued by. A number of its own diplomats who say their government failed to protect them from syndrome a mysterious illness has affected embassy staff in Cuba the newsroom's Peeta Gulf and has the details 5 Canadian diplomats and their families 14 people in total are demanding $21000000.00 u.s. Dollars in compensation claiming the government of Canada knew for months the diplomats in Havana were being targeted in some way and falling ill and not only continued to send civil servants to Cuba but actually misled them about what the risks might be as far back as 2016 staff at the Canadian and u.s. Embassies in Havana have said they've experienced what seem like concussion symptoms that includes loss of balance vision and hearing problems fatigue and nausea the u.s. Pulled almost all of its diplomatic staff out of Cuba in September 27 teen after about 20 of their staff got sick but Canada didn't take action until April 28th when it evacuated the families of diplomats even then it didn't pull a large number of embassy staff out until last month when it cut its Cuban diplomatic corps in half no one has been able to say with any certainty what has been causing these illnesses even the lawsuit says the plaintiffs were harmed by means that are not clear but the theory has been for some time that diplomats are being targeted with a sonic weapon many of them have reported hearing a persistent high pitched humming sound like crickets Canada's foreign minister Chrystia Freeland has told reporters she will not comment on the lawsuit specifically but she has said she met with some of the diplomats who are in Cuba she has heard their complaints and she said she believes the health and safety of government employees needs to be a priority Peeta golf and. Scientists have identified a species of tree native to Indonesia's Kutai national park that's resilient to climate change and if used in reforestation efforts could help preserve the habitat of threatened animal populations our science correspondent Helen Briggs gave us more information on this research what they've done is they've looked at the native plants in this particular national park more than a 1000 plants also home to many threatened animals notably a stronghold of Harang attack and other things like the Malayan somewhere and all sorts of birds they've looked at the plants to see what's there but more importantly to try and identify which plants should be there in the future so so this particular national park it's been vulnerable in the past from logging mining fires but they are trying to repopulate it with new plants supply during this work they can identify the plants that ideally you should try and put back into this habitat now some is about resilience in the future in a warming planet we'll have drought and we'll have more fires so they've identified a couple of trees that they think would be good to put back into this environment and also some trees that support around the tans for food and for nesting now it's not as simple as it sounds obviously because some of these things take a very long time to grow you also may not have the seedlings to replace them so it's a long term project but the idea is trying to future proof forests What is it the plants actually plant these trees make sure they're growing in this area and could this be used elsewhere Well there is work in this area government work also mining companies in the area they have to do some restoration work. But they may not be pushing back the plants that are actually good for that particular habitat so it's a toolkits if you like to say look these are the things we've identified we think these would be good for the future in these areas now is the new approaches lots of work from botanists around the world looking at what the effects of climate change might be on plants around the planet which ones we think it ought to be more resilient which ones you might want to plant in areas that may have had wildfires to try and offer some sort of buffer zone in the future so this is quite a novel approach that is being tried in this area on Borneo and is likely to be used in other studies in the future Helen Briggs the European Space Agency has high hopes for its models rover which is due to launch next year its mission is to investigate how the Red Planet evolved and whether they may be conditions for life in the future. And today at a ceremony just north of London the name of the British built Rover was formally unveiled as I heard from Jonathan Amos the name is Rosalind Franklin many if you don't know that name her work was pioneering in the 1950 s. She was an x. Ray crystallography she used to take pictures of the atomic arrangement of molecules but her claim to fame is that she took the picture that allowed Crick and Watson to decipher the structure of d.n.a. D.n.a. Carries the code of life and at that time in the 1950 s. They didn't really know how d.n.a. Worked until this picture was produced by Rosalind Franklin a King's College London and then click on what some could say aha we know how d.n.a. Works so it seems a very appropriate name is quite a bit of excitement here are amongst the other space officials because this rover is going to search for life on Mars. And d.n.a. Being the molecule of life and Rosalind Franklin and her attachment to that story does seem very appropriate indeed yes it's quite busy on Mars at the moment all these different probes and Rovers what will rosalind franklin be doing differently we could say that yes I mean we've just had another static line the one that doesn't move the land in November last and there are still are a couple of rovers on the surface doing one of 2 things as well the big difference here is that all previous missions that have gone to Mars have asked the question was Mars habitable not is there life there or has there been life but if the conditions were right could life of survived where is this rover is actually going to look for life or signs of life either present on the surface of the planet today or in the past and it has the instrumentation to do that so it's quite a bit different from what's gone before Jonathan a mosque now look at some of these other stories with Chris France has recalled its ambassador to Italy after what the government in Paris called a series of provocations by the leaders of the populist governments in Rome yesterday France had reacted angrily to its least deputy prime minister Luigi to my own meeting leaders of the French yellow vest protest movement. The European Union says its observers will continue to work in Nigeria ahead of next week's elections the statement follows a controversial comments by the governor of the northern state of Kaduna. Rifai said that foreigners who intervened in the polls would be put in body bags my knee joints reports from Lagos with the ever find a key ally of incumbent Muhammadu Buhari said that Nigeria would not accept foreign interference in its internal affairs he added they will go back in body bags because nobody will come to Nigeria and tell us how to run our country Mr El rufai later added He was only insisting that Nigeria's sovereignty be respected following the comments of the main opposition People's Democratic Party suggested it may review its signing of the National Peace Accord and agreement committing to peaceful elections something by all parties last year and the luxury fashion brand Gucci has apologised and withdrawn a jumper from sale after criticism that its design was racist the black Barraclough of a jumper covered the lower half of the face and featured a cutout mouth with big cartoonish red lips something common in black face caricature the garment which retailed for almost $900.00 prompted a backlash on social media by users who found it offensive for the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko it is no joke he could well be defeated in next month's presidential election by a comedian Mr Poroshenko has been in power for 5 years but opinion polls suggest he may not even make the 2nd round one of his main challenges is Vladimir Selenski who stars in a hit t.v. Show about a teacher who becomes an honorable president a complete political novice he's now one of the front runners along with former prime minister Yulia Timoshenko However as our Ukraine correspondent Jennifer reports there are some important differences between Mr Zalewski and the character he plays. It's a serious day. That's the campaign video of a lot to me as a Lenski. He's shown striding confidently through Kiev on his way to register as a candidate Selenski is the actor who plays president on t.v. And he's one of Ukraine's best known comedians and we distributed over a lot then the fake This isn't a fake competing I'm very serious about our country Selenski campaign shamelessly blurs the line between fiction and fact for example his political party is called servant of the people just like the t.v. Show the Lebanese. In the movie will want to see a president like Vasili. With the same moral values they're fed up with the establishment but there is one big difference between Selenski and the fictional presidents on t.v. The president defines the rich oligarchy who wield so much power in Ukrainian politics in real
