How do you feel about whats happened in the last few days . Do you think this revolution is here to stay . Hello. Im happy that it finally finished because it was horrible. It was horrible seeing people dying. All that was happening. Right now it is very well. The shooting has stopped. Are you comforted that the future is going to be good for ukraine . Do you think the politicians understand . We still need time. We still need time to reload our government, our parliament. We cant say its stopped now. We still have a lot of work to do and we still need to do a lot. So its not its a little victory but not a victory yet. So how do you feel about the last week . Are you confident of the future now . Yes, im confident. Absolutely. It is the first step. Ukrainians proved they are more than a democratic family. What about the parts of the country, though, who still remain loyal to yann coffeeive, the parts of the country who look towards russia. Indeed, do you think russia should help now allowing ukraine to have that full independence . We should help ourselves. We will have different parts of the country. Ukrainian People Living in different parts of the country. We are one nation and one country. It doesnt matter who is where. We are one country and one people. Thank you both very much indeed. They have been tracking his movements around the east of the country, although yesterday he turned off all communication so he couldnt be tracked. He asked his body guards who wanted to stay and who didnt. Half wanted to stay and handed weapons. Others left with him in three cars. No sign has been seen of him since then. Yanukovych has a house in donetsk. He was born close to the city where we are now in southeastern ukraine, a couple hours drive from the russian border. He was govern on her of this region a decade ago. And this is one of his many homes in the ukraine. A huge gated complex. Call me naive. I think there are worse places to see where he is. Lets go and check if theres any response. Surprise, surprise. Nobody at home. It is predominantly russian speaking. Whoever tries to lead this country forward will have the huge task of trying to unite a polarized nation. In the meantime, the hunt for Viktor Yanukovych goes on. There are rumors he tried to fly from this city to russia over the weekend. But the Customs Officials stopped his plane. Of course the focus has already shifted to what happens next and who tries to leave forward this deeply wounded and fractured country. This is a hugely important country of course in Central Europe in russias backyard. America has made it clear that no Russian Troops should be sent to ukrainian territory. People here want to keep the geographical territory as well. They dont want to see it split up. Matthew price. The eu making overtures to help ukraine. This is a country about to go bankrupt unless it gets a huge injection. You had three european Foreign Ministers at the center of brokering that deal that in essence wasnt meant to lead to president yanukovychs ouster but did set the ground for that. Now, today you have the eu top Foreign Policy official Catherine Ashton in kiev right now spending today and tomorrow meeting the new guard, if you would like in ukrainian politics to discuss with them stabilizing the situation politically and also economically. But there will be, according to russia, penalties if ukraine goes in that direction. The russians have already said ukraine will not be getting the several billion in handouts that russia was about to hand over. Russia wants to see what government ends up being in ukraine. Essentially, with the americans saying they are most likely not going to get involved in directly handing over any money to ukraine and with ukraine needing this year some 13 billion just to repay its foreign debts, its been estimated it requires a bailout of some 20 billion this year to try to stabilize the economy. The eu, with its partners, needs to step in. Now, i talked just a few moments ago to Catherine Ashtons spokeswoman who said the eu is working very quickly at the moment with the International Monetary fund, reconstruction and development and others to try and see what funding might be able. But they will have to agree to stringent Economic Reform Program. You would assume, i would have thought, tim, they wont be trying to force economic reform on to ukraine right now partly because the political vacuum but also of course because any Economic Reform Program brought in now, which would be difficult for people, would possibly add to the difficulty of a political situation as well. Okay. Matthew price in brussels, thank you very much indeed. The parliament trying to form a government of National Unity by tomorrow. People adamant they want a new Brighter Future for ukraine. Signing the bill, the president said the issue of homosexuality had been provoked by arrogant western groups. Lets bring in catherine who has been following events for us. Catherine, cheering government ministers. Clearly a popular measure then . Yes. As soon as the president put pen to paper, there was a cheer in the room. You had officials. They were extremely happy. This has been popular amongst many ugandans. If you look at the religious groups, his ruling party and many citizens are quite happy the president is defending the traditional african values. No Death Penalty which some would see as a concession. Does he stand four square behind this . Is he a supporter of these draconian measures . He was on the side of the mps who passed the laws. He wanted to find out whether gay people are born gay or nurtured gay. And he called for several scientific reports from scientists from uganda and the united states. He says that there was no scientist that stood up to say there was a genetic reason, one gene that caused somebody to be a homosexual. However, the scientist in uganda say there were several reasons why somebody could be gay. And he says because there was no specific gene pointed out to him, he had to sign the bill into law. Scotland is getting ready for a referendum on whether it should be independent from the rest of the uk. Now, that is a huge issue. Its been causing plenty of friction with the British Government not least today as cabinets from both sides meet separately in scotland to discuss one of the major battle grounds of the campaign. Theres the issue nationalists. Its all about north sea oil. Both want to be in charge getting the most out of whats left with the oil and gas reserves. Could be 40 years worth still. The uk has already had a chance. Now its scotlands turn. Still another 40 or 50 years. We see the example of norway. Now to norman smith. I guess the question north sea oil is about as immotive as it gets in a way, isnt it . It is an absolutely critical question for the scots thinking do we or do we not vote for independence. The argument is there will be many more jobs and they will be much more profitable if scots stay in the uk. Why . The uk government can invest an awful lot more in terms of tax breaks and tax incentives for countries to invest in the north sea. In other words, the industry can be much more profitable. That is a theme we have seen develop in recent weeks, which is to argue people will be better off financially staying in the uk. He questioned whether an independent scotland would be allowed to keep the pound sterling. He said, no, they wouldnt. It raises all sorts of question marks, would Interest Rates go up, playing to the same argument designed really to appeal to the Purse Strings of voters rather than heart strings. Thank you very much, indeed, norman smith in aberdeen for us. Severe smog is smothering many parts of china that. The government has sent out teams of investigators to inspect large victories, including those producing steel, coal and cement to make sure theyre not breaching the rules. The Chinese Government wants to be seen to be improving air quality. One campaign was by an artist. Inside her freezing house outside beijing, the Artist Stores hundreds of her paintings. They document every chapter in her personal life. Like a visual diary, she explains. I used to be a lawyer. But then i became an artist. 11 of her canvasses stand apart from the rest. Her socalled smog dolly series shows the painters frustration witness stand chinas poisonous air pollution. And shes taken them to the streets, handing out face masks last year s. Months later she posed with one of the paintings. The photos soon appeared on chinas version of twitter. Though many posts were deleted by government censors. These are relatively common, particularly when the air is so thick with smog that your eyes and the back of your throat burn after spending time outside. Its pollution that infuriates many in china. Even though political protests are banned in china some, like the artist, are finding creative ways to vent their anger. In december, students in Central China stage an elaborate street performance. They wanted to illustrate what it feels like to be choking on smog, they explained. Online, they post cartoons like this one showing smog essentials. Combing is careful to explain the differences between antigovernment protesters and artists like her. Translator my paintings are memories i want to leave for the next generations. In 100 years i hope people will be inspired by my artwork. She wants to believe that some day chinas pollution problems will be a thing of the past. Many like her are doing what they can to ensure the governments ambitious plans to clean up the air are put into action. Lets hope it clears up one of these days. Back to the situation in kiev. Com in this half hour, as part of our freedom season, Guantanamo Bay, a just cause or illegal act . Also aaron is back with the latest with everything mobile. It is all about smartphones, smart watches, smart everything. Its the mobile World Congress in barcelona. Live to who has what. Whats hot and whats not in the world of gadgets on the go. Hello again. The u. S. Detention center at Guantanamo Bay has always been controversial. Opened in 2002 as a place to detain enemy comp tents in americas war on terror. It has proved extremely difficult to close. What happens to the detainees once they have been released . The Guantanamo Detention Center has been a huge part of u. S. Defense policy since it opened in january 2002. President obama has promised to close it. But even if he does, its influence will be felt years after the gates are shut. Nearly 800 people were brought here as part of the u. S. War on terror. Most have been released. But some 150 still remain in camps like the one behind me. Guantanamo detainees have been described as enemy combatants. I have been speaking to people who spent years here but insist they are innocent. Back home he tends to his farm. He was suspected of having links to the taliban and spent two years in guantanamo before being released without charge. His son was born during his detention. 15 to 20 afghans are still in guantanamo. Eye been 12 years they havent seen their families. If a child doesnt see his child for that long, while my son who was born while i was in prison, would he call me his father . He wouldnt. He wouldnt call me that feeling. My own son would consider me dead. This is what i mean when i say a prisoner is like a dead person. And only a free person is alive. Another former prisoner was arrested by u. S. Forces in afghanistan in 2003. In 2007 he was given this letter by u. S. Officials at guantanamo. Marked unclassified it said he would be transferred to afghanistan and that it would occur as soon as possible. Again, he was never charged. The joy of freedom, having a free life is the most important thing in the world. The whole world knows there is no other prison like guantanamo. Coming back from there is like coming back from another world. Its like being born again. We thought we would die there. To come back was to be raised from the dead. The men here dont know yet what will happen to them. Some will be tried. Others will be transferred to third countries. The future for this notorious and controversial prison is unclear. But its influence on their lives will remain forever. Bbc news, Guantanamo Detention Center. With me now is robin similar cox, an analyst and a freelance journalist who covered this issue extensively. Thank you both for coming in. Just how do you justify the continued detention of individuals who still havent necessarily been charged, maybe never will be charged. These are people that were detained there from the battle field. They are being detained because the u. S. Is at war with al qaeda and its affiliates. It is more of a military one. Its a war. Either they are criminal suspects and you put them on trial or they are prisoners of war and they should be protected about i the geneva convention. The u. S. Set up something completely different. They tried to hold people with no rights whatsoever. We saw what happened. Would you accept things have changed and the conditions in the way in which the people are being detained . Generally i would say people are being treated in a more humane manner. They are still not allowed family visits. The convicted murderers on the u. S. Mainland law family visits. There are individuals among those detained who are recognized as potentially very dangerous people. A couple of dozen people i would say at the most where there have been any serious allegations on trim. We have half the men there who were told by a High Level Task force. They are still there. Would you accept that perhaps the way president obama and his predecessors have managed Guantanamo Bay as being part of the problem. They are plenty. Yes, you are free to go. Were not going to send you out particularly to yemen. This is where people have been cleared for transfer into countries that have a high terrorism problem. And this isnt something the u. S. Has dreamed up. They have to wait until the transfer of the u. S. Department of defense. Two members of al qaeda, the most active and dangerous terrorist group and former Guantanamo Bay detainees. Theres a huge amount of individuals there that the u. S. Has every right to be nervous about. Not just the couple of dozen who the u. S. Regards as extremely high. Lets look at those who havent been cleared for release. You would accept they should be detaked and continue to be detained. The ones who should be on trial should be put on trial. Its 12 years now. I think whats going to happen is there will be no excuse for those people because the drawdown troops will signal the end of the war in connection in which these men were held. So i think the time has come. They have been detained longer than the First World War and Second World War put together. Im saying these are people, some had nothing to do with anything. Its time to let all those people on treul. Thank you very much indeed. This is the place to go whether freedom from surveillance or the freedom to be single. Were investigating what that means actually in our modern world. Have a look at bbc. Com freedom 2014. With that we will move on. Aaron is here with the business. Aaron . Were talking ukraine to a possible financial crisis. Let me explain. Hello there. Yes, as you have been hearing a deal has been struck in ukraine. At least fragile peace has been restored. The question, and its a big question, how long will that list given that the country is heading for financial collapse. Look at some of these details. Even before they began the economy was in trouble. 5. 2 in 2011. Ukraine slumped to a quarter of 1 . It registered no growth whatsoever. The debts are huge. Total debt estimated at 73 billion. Heres the problem. Almost a quarter of this debt must be repaid the next 12 to 18 months. Now, so far its been relying on russia to buy some of its debt. On friday, standard poorss downgraded ukraine to this. Ccc. What does that mean . It is two notches above default. And there are growing fears this country could act as an economic teurpbd box. Possibly even the west. Great to have you with us. Lets start with this painting a picture for viewers around the world. When the former president chose closer ties with russia, russia came out with big promises. Discounted energy. Now with this change russia could pull that back. That leaves the ukrainian economy where . I think its important to understand initially how ukraine got into this mess in the first place. I think what we are seeing is the pictures of the president ial palace, the cash thats gone into that. Gold plated. Just about everything. Or even solid gold taps. We are seeing more palaces with most of the government, the prosecutor generals of the ministers. Its understanding how badly the corruption was widespread. And how the ukraine got into this through the corruption. The pressure from russia is ukrainians mad a choice. They wanted to focus on European Values and economies. They promised this bailout of 15 billion. Now it is looking that yanukovych is definitely out. They are hedging their bets what to do. They promised 15 billion. I cant see that coming any time soon. The aid package is being put together as we speak. If the the eu and the imf come in with offers of a loan, its not going to come free or cheap. Theyre going to expect a new government to make tough reforms. Absolutely. I think the message will be coming from the new ukrainian government. Ukraine is open for business for international investors. The reforms, including subsidies on natural gas, i think thats going to happen. Especially nobody would take a move prior to a president ial election. Now that we are unlikely to have president ial elections sometime in may, i think the first of june these subsidy thes for the population could be removed. And it will be times of reforms. I think they will be a year, two, three years of reforms. Eventually ukraine will break through. Andy, great stuff. Talk to you again very soon. It is once a year. Everyone who is anyone is there. The mobile World Congress. 75,000 people attend, including the big executives from the likes of nokia and samsung. Even Mark Zuckerberg from facebook is there on the ground. The aim is for companies to show their latest products and designs. One notable absence is apple. They like to have their own event. L. J. , great to see you. Lets start with all the gadgets. I want to talk about the Second Generation smart watch. They showed it off just recently yesterday, i believe. Whats the talk underground . Is it any better . Surely it has to be better than the first one. The Second Generation of anything is always going to be much better. After version three it starts to kind of level off. But here were seeing a lot of wearable technology. A lot of machines talking to other machines. Ive got something for you. Do you want to see it . Yes. This is a toothbrush. Who ever thought you would want to have a smartphone connected to your toothbrush. It actually knows when im brushing and helps you time the it and gives you the news at the same time while youre brushing your teeth. Some think this is a tiny bit overengineered or just as good as the clock radio but a little bit cleaner. The idea really is with the smart watches, more and more things are talking to our smartphones. L. J. Ill talk to you in just over an hours time. Thats it with the business. I know, huh . Zzzz. Its a worry, isnt it . It is a worry. Aaron, thanks very much indeed. Thanks for being with us on gmt. Still to coming well, from the ramons to the rocky mountains. We got a flavor to what she was like there. Give us a picture of someone who knew her very well. It is dangerous to use superlatives because they always make people doubt. But she was super la active. Kindness, intelligence, deep perception, humanity, and perhaps the most impressive of all is this woman who saw her mother take walking away with a knapsack in 76 and who lost her husband, did not have any hatred. Because she knew she knows what we think we all know, if you hate something youre putting your youre poisoning your own soul, per tesching your own inner workings. She also had her piano. And she was left to play it. No, no. She played it started off with a simple upright piano in a government building on days organized by other people. She didnt have a piano, no. Okay. There were about 20 musicians in the camp. Hundreds, thousands died from typhus. She said when they played in those circumstances, when they played, they felt something which they had never felt before or since, they felt close to the divine. Obviously a great asset. Lets be honest, 110 years is a long, long time. Did this period define the rest of her life, or did she move on to find her own way . No, she moved on and found her own way. Its dramatic the degree to which she forget the bad things. Didnt talk about them for many years. Overcome it all because of two things. We havent got time for two things.
