All of its 400 Stores Across the uk will close by early october, the gmb union has said. It was hoped that a bid from the Billionaire Owner of hmv would save 300 shops, but rising costs complicated the deal. It leaves the future of more than 12,000 workers and hundreds of stores uncertain. 0ur Cost Of Living correspondent Colletta Smith has been speaking to shoppers in greater manchester. You always had the stuff in there and it was good stuff, but ive just got it. In the corner of this Shopping Center in this small town, like hundreds of others across the country. The doors of wilkos have been open, but thats about to change. I dont know what theyll do with this place when when that goes, because like i said, theres not much. Theres not much going, is there . I dont come in very often, but i do come in for diy tooling and things. But itll be a great loss because well have to go to b q. Not everybodys got a car. That was probably one of the best stores on here. When you look around over the night, its just really cafes and stuff that id probably see people coming here far now. This is one of the 52 stores already marked to close this week, but now we know the other 300 or so will shut their doors to the firm collapsed in august and administrators have been running the stores in the hopes of finding a buyer. Theres actually a lot of people inside here doing the shopping today, hoping to snap up a last minute deal. But loads of the shelves are already empty. And thats because they were in discussions with a man who was hoping to rescue the whole of the wilko chain. Those talks have fallen apart this weekend, he said, despite having the support of managers and staff and the administrator. The structure of the Company Means a deal wasnt possible. Time to smarten up. With big competition from rivals in recent years. Despite its long history, wilcos just hasnt kept up. Just a few final bits, just some cream from your face and some tea towels and you know, all and glove and tidy for the sink. Dont know whats got that. And im hoping somebody s going to take it. Oh, well, dont look good. That the future is bleak for more than 10,000 staff across the chain. Some stores may be sold on to rivals like poundland or the range, but thats no guarantee staff will keep theirjobs. Poundland and wilko both trade in very similar locations, so theres often a wilko and a poundland side by side on ebay, and in that instance they probably favour their own staff. So its likely that they would unfortunately get rid of the wilko staff that are in the wilko store. A real sadness from staff and customers alike. A london court has remanded 21 year old terror suspect Daniel Khalife in custody. He is charged with escaping from Wandsworth Prison. Khalife was arrested on a Canal Towpath in North West London on saturday, four days after he allegedly escaped. He was pulled off a bike by a plainclothes Counter Terrorism officer. Live now to to our correspondent Helena Wilkinson at westminster magistrates court. What happened today . It is a relatively short what happened today . It is a relatively short hearing what happened today . It is a l relatively short hearing around eight minutes, that is pretty typical for eight minutes, that is pretty typicalfor a eight minutes, that is pretty typical for a First Magistrates Court appearance after somebody is charged. Daniel khalife, a 21 year old former soldier was brought here in a blue armoured, high Security Police van. We can show you those pictures of his arrival earlier this morning, two Unmarked Police cars and some officers outside as he was brought into the building of the magistrates court. Inside the courtroom he was brought into the dock, he was wearing a Grey Tracksuit and was asked to stand and confirm his name and date of birth. And then that new charge was put to the court, the new charge of escaping from Wandsworth Prison. The court heard more details of the allegations from the prosecution and it is alleged that Daniel Khalife used bed sheets to strap himself to the underside of that food delivery lorry, to make his way out from Wandsworth Prison and going on the run forfour days. Wandsworth prison and going on the run for four days. The court also heard that when he was arrested on saturday, he was arrested by a Plainclothes Police officer and what the court heard today is that Police Officer drew his taser, he then asked Daniel Khalife to get off his bicycle which he did. The court heard that on his person was a phone, a bag containing cash and receipts which the prosecution said suggested he had bought clothes and food. 0ccasionally At First Court appearances, there is sometimes an indication of how a defendant is going to plead when the case goes on to the crown court. Daniel khalifes barrister said there was no indication of plea and he is now being remanded in custody and he will next appear at the old bailey related to discharge on the 29th of september. A researcher at Britains Parliament arrested under Anti Espionage laws says he is completely innocent of claims he was spying for china. In a Statement Released through lawyers, the man says he felt forced to respond to accusations in the media. The researcher was one of two men arrested in march under the official secrets act. Earlier, i spoke to our Political Correspondent iain watson about the accused mans statement. It is from the parliamentary researcher who was apparently going to the sunday times, and was arrested and charged under the official secrets act. He has not said anything since the weekend, and has now issued a statement by his lawyer. He worked closely with mps who are sceptical, to say the least, of china, who wanted to have a lot harder line taken against invasion, beijing. And in a sense, this statement, he says that his views are aligned with theirs, that rather than being somebody who was spying for china, he was someone who had spent his career, he said, trying to educate people on the dangers and challenges posed on the chinese party. He says that quite generally just make genuinely, do what he was doing was for parliament, we have yet to see whether he will be charged under the official secrets act, or not, but that hasnt reverberations through westminster coming out some of those people who are critical of china, particularly in the conservative party, saying that the government should take in even harder line, they have been very critical of engagement with china, and rishi sunak, of course, at the g 20, said that he met the chinese premier, and he is and is much better to be in the room raising the concerns, rather than boycotting and imposing conditions or functions. It was also said that china should not be seen as a foe, they are a big trading partner. Those approaches have been highlighted by this case. The other thing that has been raised is security within parliament itself, and one of five mps sanctioned by china, tim lawson, said that people who felt under threat of invasion, should have been briefed privately about this arrest, rather than finding out from newspapers. The statement will be made this afternoon. And the speaker, weve nowjust had news come in that it says the uk deputy Prime Minister is actually going to make a statement to parliament on the issue of china. That has come from the Prime Ministers spokesperson. So it has now gone from the speaker to the deputy Prime Minister. The questions about who knew what and when, say keir starmer, for example, the labour leader, saying that he did the Prime Ministerfind out about this in march, when the arrest took place . We dont yet know. We know that according to sunday times, some ministers were informed, but exactly who, to that is why i think there will be under pressure to provide those answers. Then there is a question about common security, how mps react, for example, Poetry Researchers who were vetted, whether they were better properly, it is those kind of questions that i think the speaker will also have to address in his statement. And in the next 15 minutes or so were expecting a statement to mps from the House Of Commons speaker, sir lindsay hoyle. And then an hour later the deputy Prime Minister, 0liver dowden, will address mps. Well bring those statements to you live here on bbc news Around The World and across the uk. This is bbc news.
