that they are terrorist incidents. we can cross live to london bridge now and speak to our reporter, nick quraishi. you have got to that location in underan hour you have got to that location in under an hour after the first incident was reported. we can still see people making their way away from the flashing lights. yes. every time you come to me it is calm for a while and then there is intense police activity. policemen beside me are directing some cars that are about to come on to the area that is cordoned off. they will be here in a few seconds. i think i can focus on them. that is what is happening at them. that is what is happening at the scene here. when i came here, this was the only scene that we knew about. london bridge. a car had run into pedestrians. armed police going past it looks like. that was the first thing we heard, london bridge, afan had first thing we heard, london bridge, a fan had run into pedestrians. —— van. a number of suspects were carrying out stabbings. then we knew there was a second scene at borough market outside of london bridge, not far. when these things occur, people put two and two together. there is nothing to suggest they are linked. however, the proximity of both of these what seem like attacks, the proximity of where they have taken place suggested they were connected. of course, police have confirmed that to be the case now. later on, there was an incident, as you have been reporting, in vauxhall. we have to go on fact rather than rumour that something happened to there. now that has been discounted as having no connection. having to step away for a second. for periods, where i'm standing, not farfrom london bridge, southwark street. they were moving people on. this is a busy area on saturday night. people are where of what is happening. people were being ushered out what appeared to be to be the danger area at the time. police were shouting at them and telling them to move away for the rain safety. we have heard of this "run, hide, tell" approach the police were adopting. we heard from theresa may this was being treated as attentional terrorism. —— as potential. now the police say it is terrorism. jeremy corbyn has said that these incidents are brutal and shocking. that was after reports a van had ploughed into pedestrians, and another stabbing near the borough markets area. it is clearly a serious incident unfolding. it is only 2+ hours since the first details of what had happened. you will not be able to see, but behind me, it is fairly quiet again while the media are here. we can look at what is going on around here. journalists and camera crews clearly with not just one incident, what first happened on london bridge which was bad enough, but subsequent crime scenes, borough market. a lot has unfolded in a short period of time. thank you. nick qureshi. joining me is the policeman at the scene. what have they told you? i have spoken to a couple of people, a young woman on the bridge. she did not see how people were injured, but she saw at least two injured people. she saw one of those people being attended to, given cpr. obviously, she wanted to, given cpr. obviously, she wanted to get away as quickly as possible. people were told to get away as quickly as possible. she was driven by someone who had a car on the bridge away to the north end of the bridge away to the north end of the bridge near the monuments tube station. the second person i spoke to was a young man out with friends who was clearly disturbed by what he saw. he said he saw something happened which he said he could not articulate. it looks like it was violent. he said if he was crossing it two minutes later, it would have been him. he was too upset to say any more. he and his friends walked away three quarters of an hour after the incident happened. what can you see? the police cordon has been extended further north away from the tube station. police are basically trying to push people away who were out on a night out, trying to keep the area secure. it has calmed down a lot. and ambulance went by ten minutes ago into the scene, but it has been a lot quieter. many emergency response vehicles are still on the scene. many first responders have been calling in offering to work on their days off. thankfully, they have enough. as you have implied with eyewitnesses, they cannot quite believe what they have seen cannot quite believe what they have seen sometimes. that is it. the young man who spoke to me, he said it is the worst thing he has ever seen. it is the worst thing he has ever seen. that was what he told me. he said it was so bad he could not tell me the level of violence. he did not wa nt to me the level of violence. he did not want to say it. he was extremely upset. when he wanted to stop talking, i let him go, because he had obviously seen something quite terrible. i got to be seen a0 minutes after the incident we now know happened at around ten past ten. some witnesses were still around, but they left shortly afterwards. speaks to just how packed and busy london is on a saturday night, the enormity of the task for the police and emergency services to lead everyone to safety. yeah. at one point, police were screaming, screaming, really loudly, at journalists and screaming, screaming, really loudly, atjournalists and witnesses, at any one who gathered near the scene, to move that, to get back. at one point, someone was clearly on the scene and had witnessed everything and perhaps had seen something pretty traumatic, they were being screened at to get back. he was in tea rs. screened at to get back. he was in tears. police told him to get back for his own good. but he obviously wa nted for his own good. but he obviously wanted to stay either with someone on the scene or stay on the scene for some reason. he was in tears, extremely upset. there was such a level of confusion and panic on the scene. a5 minutes after. level of confusion and panic on the scene. as minutes after. thank you very much. ajournalist scene. as minutes after. thank you very much. a journalist at monument, not far away from the first incident on london bridge. with me is our reporter, greg dawson. he has been with me for some time keeping an eye on things. the ambulance service issued a statement. they say they are tending to the incidence. they have sent first response to the scene with the first response to the scene with the first responders arriving in six minutes. and advanced trauma teams have been dispatched biker. they are working closely with other services to get people to safety and make sure they get the medical safety they need. there initial priority is to assess the level and nature of the injuries and ensure those people most in need are taken to hospital and treated. we are not sure where they have been taken to yet. there area number of they have been taken to yet. there are a number of hospitals in that nearby area in central london. they will be many hospitals on alert, clearly, waiting for casualties to arrive. we don't know the nature of the injuries, how many are injured at this point. but this statement from the london ambulance service given out ten minutes ago are just detailing the resources deployed at that area in this ongoing matter. thank you very much, greg dawson. going back to london bridge to speak to our reporter again, nick. it is very much an ebb and flow event, with things calming and livening up again. there are police behind you. what are they telling you? the main priority is to get people out of what appears to be a danger zone. they are not telling us much. they will be seen more as the night goes on. other people are in a better position, who have heard from witnesses that have been actually affected by what happened. all i can do is... we are a little bit away from london bridge. as we are seeing, people are being moved on. there is intense police activity trying to get saturday night crowds out of the area. yet more police vehicles are coming past. umm... so, every few minutes, you will understand that there is so much going on here. it is calm now, but, you may have been with me a little while ago. a number of people were coming with their hands held on their heads. many people going out for a night out. it is a police tactic. clearly, not everyone is a suspect. but they were trying to make sure any suspects involved in this were not involved, mingling, in these crowds trying to get away. we have seen some dramatic scenes. we know that police have declared what has happened at london bridge and borough market, just across the road from the south side of london bridge, to be terrorists incidents. we have heard from theresa may that she will chair a cobra committee meeting tomorrow morning. jeremy corbyn has also talked of what has happened in these two as and shocking. we also know that police adopted this approach of run, hide, tell, clearly taking what has happened fiercely and expressing the urgency of the need for people to stay safe. every few minutes, like i say, there is activity around, reporters around me. clearly, this isa reporters around me. clearly, this is a very, very, very major incident. what happened in manchester recently, only last week, and the attack of the bridge in march, this clearly has the potential to happen in many more areas, being in london bridge and borough market. we are getting bogged down occasionally with rumours, something else happening. we heard something might have happened at vauxhall in south london. again, not too far. that has been discounted as having any connection. but clearly, what happened in these two areas, london bridgejust behind me, just past happened in these two areas, london bridge just behind me, just past the cordon and the blue lines, and borough market, a short distance away, they are being treated with the utmost seriousness. thank you very much, nick, london bridge. a few things on social media. the blood transfusion service, blood nhs: our thoughts are with everyone in london. no urgent donations are required. the result in an appeal that goes out on nights like this when people are required to go and donate. that is not the case tonight. and also national rail are saying lines will be reopened shortly after that incident at london bridge. on the line is someone london bridge. on the line is someone who was london bridge. on the line is someone who was at london bridge. on the line is someone who was at the pub with friends underneath london bridge at the time of the first incident. i know that you are far away from their now, but what happened? i was there with my girlfriend and two other friends at around ten o'clock in the evening a woman in her early 20s staggered into the pub and she was bleeding heavily from the neck and from her mouth. it seemed to me and my friend that her throat had been cut. people went to her aid throat had been cut. people went to heraid and throat had been cut. people went to her aid and the pub was then closed. we saw police on the roads nearby and then as we were told to leave the area by armed police, as we were running away from their i could see to my left that another individual was having cpr performed on them by emergency services. how quickly did the paramedics arrived ? emergency services. how quickly did the paramedics arrived? at that point i don't know which emergency services were attending to the woman. the police were there immediately when we left the pub but idid not immediately when we left the pub but i did not see an ambulance at that particular stage at the mudlark pub. so, to be clear, a woman bleeding appearing to be cut and another person receiving cpr. that is correct. two individuals injured. one woman who was bleeding from the neck who came into the pub and then another woman outside the pub who was having cpr performed on her by emergency services will. for anyone who does not know this part of london, and there will be many people watching who do not, this pub, the mudlark, tell us how close to london bridge this is. this is where it unfolded with the van driving into a wall and knocking people over. the sadiq khan pub is below london bridge level so you access it by going down the stairs on london bridge. you need to go past other establishments to get here and then you get here. past other establishments to get here and then you get harem past other establishments to get here and then you get here. it was certainly no further than 100 metres away from london bridge foot. as these women were being treated, the police arrived. that is correct. what did the police tell you to do? we have seen footage on a mobile phone of police coming and telling everybody to get down and the customers looking confused and hiding underneath tables. it was panic. in the first instance there was a van that arrived with two officers in the van and they did not appear to be armed. they were taking commands on the radio. they told me to wait there, they drove off and then a minute later, certainly no later than that, armed police arrived on the scene and told us to run away from the direction of london bridge. we took refuge in another restaurant. and you are safely back home? yes, i am. i am pleased to hear that. what a shocking thing to have seen. it was certainly shocking. this will not stop me from continuing to enjoy our way of life and not stop me from respecting and tolerating people of all religions and races. thank you very much, alex for talking to us about what you saw this evening for about what you saw this evening for a home affairs correspondent is an southwark street near borough market. tom, i don't know if you have been able to speak to an officer on duty but it is starting to become clear what is happening over the course of the last three hours. the police officers adsense like this do not tell you what is going on. this is a serious situation and the police communications plan that goes into place involves telling everybody at the same time, notjustjournalists but the whole world what is going on. what they have said in the last hour or so is that the incident at vauxhall, down the river, it is not connected to the incident here. they have asked for common sense and restraint to be used when people circulate pictures and features that make videos of incidents. and that they have set a number of resources have been sent to the scene. it is frustrating to not know what the official line is. what is missing from those statements is any indication that this is an ongoing terrorism incident and that there are still people at large. what we wa nt to are still people at large. what we want to know now is whether the three orfour want to know now is whether the three or four people that eyewitnesses have told us may have been involved in this were shot by police at the scene down there in the borough market area. we have a number of eyewitnesses who said that to us. one said that two had been shot. to give you some idea of how police respond in this sort of situation, there are counterterrorism specialist, firearms officers, trained to deal with incidents like this with higher power weaponry than regular armed police. that includes officers such as the british transport police. this incident isjust as the british transport police. this incident is just over the as the british transport police. this incident isjust over the road from london bridge station where the bpt will have a strong presence at this time of night, a saturday night as the pubs begin to shut and people used the railway lines to get home. it is possible that some of those we re it is possible that some of those were armed and able to quickly get to the scene but i can tell you that police had been on a alert in incident like this for some weeks. i have been working in westminster for the last few weeks and venal armed officers waiting in a car with the engine running, waiting to move if an incident occurs. i have not personally spoken to anyone who has given us an idea of how quickly police were on the scene. i spoke to one eyewitnesses saw people being attacked by an attacker with a long knife. he said there were no police there at that time but that must have been within one or two minutes of the car, or van, crashing have been within one or two minutes of the car, orvan, crashing into people on london bridge. i'm keeping an eye on some of the units going down towards the scene just to see what is happening. so we do know that shortly after that the police we re that shortly after that the police were there and were taking control of the situation. quickly they put ina of the situation. quickly they put in a cordon which, as i said, it must be 1—mile across, covering two bridges that i tried to cross, london bridge and suffered —— southwark bridge. as i came down through the city you had the people out to the night and having a good time, concerned and on their telephones. one woman said she was being besieged with people checking to see if she was ok. social media will be important for people wanting to get in touch with people to make sure they are safe you can be assured that there is a big police investigation now being under way to identify those involved and the van, who they may be connected with and crucially if any more attacks are planned. cobra meets tomorrow and i don't doubt they will again look at the threat level and whether it is where it should be. of course it was only reduced in threat level a few days ago following what happened in manchester. that is correct. it went to critical following the bombing of the manchester arena carried out by salman abedi. that followed concerns that police were not sure where the device came from and how it was constructive, whether there were other people involved. quickly, within about four or five days, the government decided to drop the threat level from critical to severe, which is one stage lower. it has only been at critical life since the system was introduced in 2006. once foreign airline bomb plot when there was a plan to bring down a dozen planes in midair and again, when we had an attack on central london and glasgow airport. it was used in manchester and i suspect the government will take advice from the security advisers to get independent advice about the security situation. they talk to police and security services, they then decide, they then advise the government on what to do and the prime minister and her home secretary decide whether or not to increase the threat level. that is an indication as to whether or not they believe there is potential for another imminent attack. that is the test. that test is met then i suspect we will be back up to critical while the situation is being dealt with. that is our home affairs correspondent. around 20 walking wounded have been triage at a hospital near liverpool street station —— at a hotel. that is the anders hotel. one woman has been taken into an ambulance with a young man who was heavily bandaged and has a bloodied head most of the wounded have now been moved. tom mentioned the use of social media which is a mixed blessing sometimes on a night like this facebook activates a safety feature so people can mark themselves as being safe. many people in london are offering safe haven to people caught up in these incident and safe transport home. one eyewitness says that everyone was ordered to get down by police. we saw these pictures are a little earlier. a few people in the bar had been stabbed. all of the people remained down for about 30 minutes and then everyone was able to start getting up. another wave of police came through the building. eventually everyone was ta ken to safety. joining us now is james yates who sent us pictures from the beer hall. these are your pictures, james. was there any warning that this was happening? not particularly. the armed police charged through with no warning as to what was going on and a few minutes after that, one or so minutes after that, one or so minutes after that, they started telling us to evacuate and then told us telling us to evacuate and then told us to get back downstairs. and in a few moments after that the police came down and told us all to stay on the floor and just stay there. they went straight through the bar and out was the back. yeah, wejust stayed on the floor for about half an hour. from what we have learnt as well there were people in the bar who were injured. were they injured in the baror who were injured. were they injured in the bar or have they come in with those injuries? there was one man who said he had been slashed in the face. it was not an overly bad wound but it caught him under the chin. he was on the street. he must have been straight outside from where we were and then looked for safety and the bar. what time of night was this? roughly about 11 o'clock. 0k. about a5 minutes after the incident first happened on london bridge, just a short distance from where you were. how much were the police telling you about why they were keeping you inside the building? when the first lot came through they did not say a lot, they told us to get down and stay down for safety. the second lot told us that armed police had surrounded the building. they didn't give us any details of what had happened outside that we could see on social media what was going on. the police were quick they were good and it was a high—pressure situation. they were yelling but no—one inside the bar was overly stressed and the police were good at keeping everyone... doing it without feeling. we felt quite safe with the police presence there. it was only when the second wave came through that youth of something might be happening. thank you very much for talking to us, james. he filmed the footage we have just been watching their and describing what was happening inside the bar close to london bridge. a major incident is still being dealt with in two locations in the centre of london. on london bridge and in southwark at borough market. armed police have closed this bridge which you see now in these live pictures and police say there has been more than one fatality. stabbings took place nearby and shots were fired. hello. welcome to bbc news, broadcasting on bbc one in the uk and on bbc world news. a major incident is taking place in london tonight with reports of multiple casualties in different locations. armed police have closed a major bridge after a vehicle swerved off the road, hitting a number of pedestrians. police say there's been more than one fatality. officers then responded to reports of stabbings nearby and shots were fired. the first incident happened at london bridge, one of the major arteries between the north and the south of the city. the reported stabbings took place in borough market which is nearby. the british prime minister theresa may has described the incidents in london as a "potential act of terrorism."
