But the decision has been greeted with dismay in spain, which says outbreaks there are confined to only a few regions in the north, with much of the country safer than britain. What the government is promising and what cyclists want is cycle lanes that are separate from the traffic, segregated and safe. A new body called active travel england will be set up to make sure cycle lanes meet those standards. Some have pointed out that the £2 billion is less than a tenth of the £27 billion the government has pledged to spend on new roads. But environmentalists and cycling groups have welcomed the initiative. It is probably the biggest change that i have seen in my lifetime, because i can see the mechanics behind it and the set up with the creation of active travel england to be the overseer and arbiter of delivery of cash and standards, that it is the makings of an incredibly transformative plan. Care home inspectors in scotland were given nearly 200 warnings about Staff Shortages during lockdown thats according to new figures obtained by bbc scotlands disclosure programme. During the pandemic, more people died with the virus in scotlands care homes than in its hospitals, and there are fears staff absences may have compromised residents care. Mark daly reports. Bridget snakenburg had lived in whitehills care home in East Kilbride for four years. When it locked down, her granddaughter louise could only see her through the window. Ive been so close to my gran for my 39 years, since i was a baby, basically. If i couldve burst through the walls i wouldve, aye. Whitehills was hit hard with coronavirus. At the height of the pandemic, 39 of its staff were off work. There wasnt enough staff to care for their needs. I would say neglect. So youd put it as strong as that, neglect your gran was neglected . Well, when i went in and saw her, yes. Yeah. In may, bridget tested positive for covid and then suffered a stroke. Louise insisted on being allowed inside the home and found her grand inside the home and found her gran lying in her bed which was soiled and wet, and her room dirty. The debris had built up in her room. Shed been in her bed for a long time and her room hadnt been touched for a long time. Ive never seen a room like that. Louise also found and opened bag of soiled ppe in her bathroom, in breach of covid protection control protocol. Bridget died with covid on may the 13th. New figures obtained by disclosure reveal the depth of the Staff Shortages across scotlands care homes during the pandemic. The care inspectorate received 30 red alerts that homes couldnt properly care for the residents and 149 amber warnings that staffing was stretched. The bbc understands whitehills had been on a red staffing alert for much of april, and amber when bridget died. A spokesperson for whitehills said, we have apologised to mrs snakenburgs family for failing to quickly remove used ppe from her room during the covert crisis. Our Infection Control procedures have since been fully reviewed and endorsed by the care inspectorate, which has praised our high standards of hygiene. During the lockdown, six year old faith and her mother searched for magazines that represented young black girls like her. When they realised there werent any they decided to design and print their own. Called cocoa girl, its already sold thousands of copies. Amanda kirton reports. Hello, my name is faith, and im the editor of cocoa girl. Shes only six years old and is one of the editors for the uks First Magazine aimed at black girls. During lockdown, faiths mother went shopping for magazines to keep her daughter occupied. It was at this point that they realised there was a gap in the market. We decided to do a magazine which reflected her and other girls like her. Theres a few mothers that have bought this magazine as a surprise for their daughter. Some of them have never seen a black girl on the front of a cover before. This girl looks like me, because shes got those. Leading figures within the magazine industry are aware of the problems around diversity. I think genuine diversity is not just about a cover its about a culture, and really using this moment as an opportunity to look at the brands that we work for, look at our teams, and take some of the learnings from the past few weeks following the black lives matter movement. But after the tragic death of george floyd in america, it looked like the launch of the magazine was under threat. I didnt think that i could launch a magazine which told black children that they could be anything they want to be when we had seen such a sad death. A lot of people were asking, what can we do to support the black community . And the response was amazing. There was one time where the magazine was selling 1,000 a day. I was somebody that had been trying so hard to get into publishing from such a young age. I left the industry because there was always that Glass Ceiling that i couldnt get through. Im really, really happy and proud. The fact that serlina has actually created a magazine for six, seven year olds who actually are picking it up and reading it, thats awesome. We are really concerned that, actually, if we dont look at how diversity in content is being tackled now forfuture generations, it means that actually maybe that six, seven year old wont pick up a magazine and they wont read that content because its not relevant to them. I knew she was struggling with what she looked like. This journey that shes gone on, to love her hair, to love her skin tone, to love everything about herself is the most amazing thing that has happened. Can ijust say something, mummy .
