For the first few days. After an evening phone call, downing street warns that post brexit trade talks are in a serious situation. It was a night to remember for Marcus Rashford. On the field he scored twice to lift Manchester United up to sixth in the premier league off it, he was recognised by fifa for his work to try and end child food poverty in the uk. Catching up on one of the years most inspiring stories. Six year old tony hudgells raised more than £1. 5 million for charity. Well take a look at how the money will make a difference good morning. Rain is back today, heavy full some of us. Flooding likely in south wales. Windy, mild. I have your friday forecast and prospects for a brighter weekend. Its friday the 18th of december. Our top story. Millions of people across the uk are braced for tougher covid restrictions amid growing concern about rising Coronavirus Infections. From tomorrow, swathes of eastern and southern england will move into tier 3 measures. Northern ireland has announced it willjoin wales in starting a new lockdown after Christmas Day, meaning non essential shops will close, along with pubs, restaurants and hairdressers. Aruna iyengar has more. Around the uk, restrictions are tightening. From saturday in england more than two thirds of the country will be in tier 3, with a number of areas, including bedfordshire and buckinghamshire, moving to the toughest level. But theres some respite. Bristol and North Somerset will move from tier 3 to tier 2. And herefordshire goes from tier 2 to tier i. In clevedon, North Somerset, dropping down to tier 2 is a cause for celebration. Yes yes, yes, yes hurray i can go out on my 70th birthday, on monday, and celebrate in a pub locally i think its a mistake. I probably think its a mistake, because surrounding areas are still increasing. Bristol has gone down, but i think weve just got. Just got to sort of live with it and try and get over it. Hastings in east sussex will move into tier 3. It is a shame to see such a vibrant place as hastings old town seem to grind to a halt, and its such a shame that all the talented people that work and operate here are not doing that. These restrictions come into force just days before the christmas relaxation. Wales has already announced a post christmas lockdown. The first minister warned other nations could follow. My prediction would be that in other parts of the uk, as current restrictions are lessened, they too will find themselves with numbers escalating and more action needing to be taken. And last night in Northern Ireland, a new six week lockdown from boxing day was announced. Non essential shops will be closed and all sporting events banned. Its very clear that we need an urgent intervention. I think this is the right decision by the executive, albeit i accept it will be challenging for many, many people. We try to get a balance in all of these things, but its clear that we needed a longer and deeper intervention. With pressure on the nhs mounting, difficult days lie ahead. Aruna iyengar, bbc news. Our correspondent Frankie Mccamley is in windsor, in berkshire which is one of the counties heading into tier 3. Good morning to you. New restrictions for lots of people. Good morning stop these new restrictions are going to mean that just over two thirds of england are going to be placed in tier 3 restrictions from the weekend. Many of the area is moving into tier 3 from just past midnight tonight are like here, windsor in berkshire, on the commuter belt surrounding london, which went into tier 3 just a few days ago on wednesday. The government says the tightening of restrictions do need to happen to help prevent the nhs from being overwhelmed, especially as we move into january, usually one of the busiest months for hospitals. Many bars, restaurants and pubs will have to close, apart from those who can open for take raising what is the busiest period for them this year. A lot of the area around here lies heavily on tourism, like Windsor Castle, with travel restrictions coming into place that is not good news. This is not full lockdown. In tier 3 you can still meet in groups of up to six in outdoor public spaces. The shops, gyms and hairdressers will still remain open. Borisjohnson says talks to reach a post brexit trade agreement are in a serious situation with a no deal scenario now very likely unless the eu position changes substantially. The Prime Ministers comments came following a call with the European Commission president , ursula von der leyen, last night. Heres our Political Correspondent chris mason. In a fortnights time on new years day, the uks relationship with the European Union will have changed and changed substantially. And yet, two weeks out, we dont know if that new arrangement will be with an overarching trade deal or without one. What we do know is the differences between the two sides, which stand in the way of a deal are significant. Last night, there was another phone call between the Prime Minister and ursula von der leyen, the president of the European Commission. And guess what . They agreed their teams would carry on talking. In a statement after the call, borisjohnson said the negotiations were now in a serious situation. Time was very short and it now looked very likely that agreement would not be reached unless the eu position changed substantially. For those wanting a deal, the eus comments contained a splash of optimism. Ursula von der leyen said, and yes, both sides acknowledge how much fish can be caught in each others waters isnt yet sorted out. And the issue of state aid is a problem too. The support either side can give to a domestic industry without breaching the terms of any agreement. The uk doesnt like a suggestion from the eu that support that comes from brussels rather than a member state should be exempt from any limits on state aid. Both sides do want to do a deal if they can find one that is mutually acceptable, but that is no guarantee one will happen. Chris mason, bbc news. More of what we can expect from the weekend weather as we go through the morning. Goodbye from 110w through the morning. Goodbye from now for now. Lets take a look at some of todays front pages. Many papers lead on the extension of tier 3 covid restrictions to large parts of southern england. The daily mirror carries the headline tiers before bedlam which is a reference to warnings from some Health Experts that mixing during the Festive Season could lead to a spike in new cases. The Daily Telegraph reports on the latest brexit talks. Christmas or boring . Boring, please. There is a surprise. A calendar. Are you a fan of a calendar . It is not an Advent Calendar, it is a calendarfor calendar . It is not an Advent Calendar, it is a calendar for next year. This is the dull mans club calendar. What makes it so dull . It has various pictures. There is a washing machine restorer and a security envelope collector. A man who spends ten hours a day doing jigsaws and a student who photographs wet floor signs. These are all featured in this calendar. This is james, who is fascinated by the patterns on insides of envelopes, the graphic patterns. All of this has featured in the dull mans clubs calendar. Is it a calendar of dull things people do . 0ne personmcdowell is another persons interesting, isnt it . The World Biggest crane undertook its biggest net yesterday. One persons dull. It is capable of lifting up to 55,000. This happened yesterday . We should have seen those pictures. That is just one tenth of its ability. Those are incredible things, extraordinary things. I will jaw your attention to a couple of birthdays happening. Brad pitt, it is brad pitts birthday today. 52 . 57. The last one, keith richards, Rolling Stones guitarist . 82. That is not so good. He is 77 years old. No, you did not i nearly went 78. No, you did not i nearly went 78. No, you did not i nearly went 78. No, you did not commit you when 82. Ido like no, you did not commit you when 82. I do like our birthday guessing game. We do play that a lot. Weve covered so many inspirational stories on breakfast during this pandemic but few of them have had the impact of six year old tony hudgell. Tony has two prosthetic legs and back in the summer he decided to walk more than six miles to raise money for the hospital, which treated him. His family thought he might raise £500 pounds tony beat that target by a cool £1. 6 million. We wanted to have a catch up with tony to see how hes getting on and also to relay a special message from another well known fundraiser. Graham satchell has more. He has got a nice list in there and a naughty list. Where . There, it says nice list and over here says naughty list. If anyone deserves to be on the nice list this christmas, its six year old tony hatchell. Hudgell. I will tell you what i want for christmas and you write it down on a piece of paper. 0k. Ill put it on here. 0h, right. 0k. What a year its been its just so lovely that such a young boy can encapture so many people. Tony got his first ever set of prosthetic legs earlier this year. Inspired by captain tom, he set himself a target to walk 10 kms and raise money for the hospital that saved his life. This was day one of the challenge. The first walk took more than an hour. Keep going. Youre going so well. When i walk there, just so, yeah, really hurty. They hurt, do they . Yeah. A bit sore. There was quite a lot of pain at the beginning. But a tumble wont stop him. Tony has already overcome unbelievable hurdles in his short life. When he was just a few weeks old, tony was taken to the evalina hospital in london with horrific injuries. His birth parents had abused him so badly, his legs had to be amputated. When i was told the story, ijust burst into tears. It was absolutely horrific. You just. You couldnt imagine that a tiny 41 day old baby had suffered such horrific abuse. But, after spending an hour with him and his beautiful big brown eyes, ijust could not part with him. And im so glad i didnt. Pauls family fostered tony and then adopted him. The family set a target to raise £500 for the evalina. Tony was thinking a bit bigger. If you could decide, how much money would you like to raise . £5 million thousand. £5 million thousand . I want to. Thats a great total. Thats the best total ever. Hey tony crossed the finish line injune. To date, hes raised £1. 6 million. How can a five, six year old raise that amount of money . Weve had donations from all over the world and the messages of love and support. Its just so humbling that everybodys right behind tony. Hi, tony. This is tonys consultant at the evalina. In my mind, hes a true hero. It just shows the nation that anything is really possible as long as you have determination and really confidence in yourself. And theres no doubt that this little one certainly has both. The hospital will spend the money on a set of Virtual Reality headsets like these to distract children before operations on new 3d cameras to help complex surgery and, in time, the tony hudgell therapy room. Tony will do it himself. A final quick surprise, a message from tonys hero and inspiration. Hello, tony. I am absolutely thrilled with what you are doing. I think you must be an example to all the young people of today that someone like you can go on walking and Getting Better and better and better as time goes on. You really are a star and you stand out amongst all of the people with your effort. So young. Well done. Ah isnt that lovely, tony . What would you like to say to captain tom . Thank you. In the last few days, tony has got new prosthetic legs. They make him two inches taller, maybe the best Christmas Present ever. Come on, tiger. He can achieve and do anything he wants in life. And i have absolutely no doubt that he will achieve exactly what he wants to achieve. Weve always brought him up that, yes, he may be differently abled, but he is able to do anything. He might have to do it his way, but he can do it. A nice, casual stance at the end. That young man is definitely doing things his own way. I like the idea of that therapy room, that will be there for generations to come and it will be a testament to a rather amazing young man. Tony inspiring many. Speaking of which, wed love you to nominate your heroes of 2020 this christmas. Heres one suggestion to kick us off. It comes from another young man weve come to know quite well on breakfast. This christmas, my hero is freddie because he has raised so much money for manchester Childrens Hospital, where i am being treated for leukaemia and he is such a great friend. Merry christmas. That was hughie talking about his friend freddie, who is running more than 60 miles before christmas. If youd like to nominate your hero, wed love to hear why they are so special. A lot of attention around these young people raising money. It does not have to be about money raising. It can be a gesture, and moment in time when someone has done something that was not asked for, you just need a moment in time. People have had plenty of moments when they needed a little left, a moment in time. You can tweet your nomination with the hashtag bbc breakfast heroes or drop us an e mail. Millions of people in the south of england will find themselves in the highest tier of covid restrictions from tomorrow. We have been talking about this, havent we . I
