Popular with tourists from all over the world. But the piece is about to be shattered by a series of terror attacks. This is the story of the minutes that followed and how they changed the lives of three people from thousands of miles away. Ona day like people from thousands of miles away. On a day like today its a holiday today. People hear the looking at the beach. For a way for hope. The earlier we as a family i think is a world have come to recover is if something good can come out something good can come out something so evil. Easter sunday, 2019. The luxury Shangri La Hotel in the capital was packed with visitors enjoying their holiday. Look through the window, it was a beautiful morning. Just like any other normal morning. Just like any other normal morning. I locked the door and i can hear my music in the background, like shangri la. Hear my music in the background, like shangrila. Karen from london was staying at the hotel while on business. A friend from australia had booked a last minute holiday here. Everything was done really well. The service, the quality, everything was done at a really high quality. I loved it. Those first few days. I was walking through the corridor, to the left and i pressed the button and the lift opened and i got in. Two local men had also checked in. They were caught on security cameras on their way to brea kfast. Security cameras on their way to breakfast. They walked into the restau ra nt breakfast. They walked into the restaurant passed all the stations of food. These two men brushed past me. They were swinging around these big backpacks that i found quite odd at the time. One ki was looking quite intently around the area. He got quite close to my face and i rememberfinding that got quite close to my face and i remember finding that really uncomfortable. The two men had sworn allegiance to the Islamic State group. They were here to kill taurus. Tourists. Group. They were here to kill taurus. Tourists. Just heard that big side that big bomb underneath. Everything goes silent you dont hear any sound anymore. Literally for a moment you freeze. All i remember it was hearing a sound coming from my right and i remember feeling like pressure. The next thing i knew, iwas on feeling like pressure. The next thing i knew, i was on the ground. Must have been about five seconds later you can hear the screaming on the lift next to me. Kids were screaming and you can see the jerk stopping of the moment. The door opened, thats when you see all this carnage in front of you. It was as if there was like ash coming from the ceiling. Ijust see the wires all dropping out of the roof. The walls all shattered, you can hear the water sprinklers, you can see people, blood all over running around. Trying to escape. As i looked down and saw that i noticed that i from head to toe i was covered in blood. I saw the destruction in the room that had been caused and i saw the terror and other peoples eyes. I basically thought we were definitely going to die. David lindsay was in london that day but his father, brother and sister were staying in the Shangri La Hotel. Sister were staying in the shangrila hotel. Hes american and my is english. They are all pictures. How old is she here . Shes probably 14. This is emily and dad on a beach in california. Emily really was the glue that held the entire family together. She was as close to everyone. Dad was the most selfless person you could have ever ask for. David, emily and his elder brother had stayed at home to study for his exams. When they were just not holiday really. Because they we re very not holiday really. Because they were very adventurous people they wanted to get to know the world better. Develop a global view on how things worked as much as possible. They were caught up in the attack on the shangri la while they were at breakfast. They had gone to get something from the buffet when it happened. And just because of the way they were standing she and my dad made it out with barely a scratch. No they didnt. Emily and daniel were amongst those rushed to sri lankas hospital. The doctor was one of the medical staff trying to save the wounded. Eight lack of casualties. Dead bodies around me. I still remember ambulances were coming so people were shouting, there were quite a number of infected. They were so shocked. And probably some were in seeing Something Like this happen. Emily and Daniel Lindsay could not be saved. Two of the 35 people who lost their lives in the shangri la that morning. But it wasntjust their lives in the shangri la that morning. But it wasnt just three Luxury Hotels that were bombed on easter sunday. The islands Christian Community was also a target. On a date when churches were packed. Community was also a target. On a date when churches were packedm isa date when churches were packedm is a special day for christians especially. At the zion church on the islands east coast eight young man arrived wearing a large rucksack. Brother stanley who is helping at the service spoke to him. He was really young and he had a bag. He was really calm then later oni bag. He was really calm then later on i was thinking in different ways how he was looking. I spoke to him and he refused to come in. At that timei and he refused to come in. At that time i didnt feel anything but i went inside. The zion church recorded the sound of their service starting. Huge sound, all the ceiling from the stage one side fall down. This church was one of three bombed that day by other young men in the terror cell operating on the island. Inspired by the so called Islamic State. The most terrifying scene, ive never seen in my life. I have seen many ive never seen in my life. I have seen many wars ive never seen in my life. I have seen many wars but id never see, i have never seen this kind of terror. Across the island and other Easter Service was just finishing at saint sebastians church. She and her family devout christians, were in the congregation that day. As another suicide bomber detonated his device. 115 people i have too believed to be killed at saint sebastians. 27 of them children. It was the worst loss of life in the nine bombings that day. As sri lankans tried to rebuild their lives the lindsay family were also trying to come to terms with their devastating loss. David was determined to do something positive for sri lanka. So the family establish a charity in memory of emily and daniel to provide support for the hospitals that were so support for the hospitals that were so overwhelmed that day. Doctors are very good because theyve dealt with the civil war for the 30 years. They really did everything they could. There werent enough trolley beds for people. People were being carried to the hospital against the wall, you know is good as the doctors wore they couldnt, there was no way to console everyone. Now, nearly a year on, david has come to see a delivery of new hospital beds paid for by his Charity Fundraising in britain. Here they are, charlie beds and your entry like it to see them. What, how do you feel . L beds and your entry like it to see them. What, how do you feel . A deep feeling of pride and gratitude for actually managing to get something done. And for everyone whos helped us done. And for everyone whos helped us and whos allowed this to be possible. These were made in a local factory and we want to do source is much as the equipment locally as possible. Because a country has been hit very hard. So every dollar of business you can give to local companies is helping even more than just bringing them back. And the fa ct just bringing them back. And the fact that youre in this hospital where you have actually seen the place where your brother and sister we re place where your brother and sister were brought, this is very tough to deal with. Very tough. And of course when i saw the place last time very, very upsetting. Its somewhat comforting to feel this place with a bit of pride for bringing these trolleys here. Providing beds is just the start for the charity. Then we go to bigger pieces. If we get the funding we could even build our own hospital. But willjust have to see what prices we can get. And how things will work out operationally. But im very optimistic. The charity is also working with the authorities to improve practical trauma care. And there are plans to help the wider community. We want to try and aid the recovery of the country both socially and economically. And there isa numberof socially and economically. And there is a number of ways to looking at doing that. When looking at education, were looking at skills training and were looking at direct Mental Health and support help. In its purest form the charity exist to Carry Forward emily and daniels there are no longer here to do so. For karen now back in sri lanka the shangri la bomb was a flashback to the civil war he had experienced growing up. As a child. For me civil war had left a mark on my life i rememberasa war had left a mark on my life i remember as a child it was normal. You look around, you see a bombing at night, in the middle of the night you have a shell coming and youll think of that is a very normal event. The war raged for 25 years as insurgents sought to establish an independent state in sri lanka. The conflict killed tens of thousands of people. And wounded and displaced many thousands more. Few families we re many thousands more. Few families were left untouched. But karens was torn apart. Caught in the crossfire between insurgents and they sure linking army. My brother, he was six years older than me. I mustve been 11, 12 at the years older than me. I mustve been 11,12 at the time. I can see him coming from the Senior School running towards me and i was running towards him. I see him being shot, falling down. So i ran to him, there was a moment of shock, a moment, i was a moment of shock, a moment, i was very young i didnt know what to do. But my father, he loved his son and he said you know what i do not ca re and he said you know what i do not care and he just walked into the camp to see the boy. And they arrested him and they kept him for six months. And they tortured him. Karens father paid smugglers to get him out of sri lanka to britain and safety. He claimed asylum and lived with a Refugee Charity in london. He excelled in school, went to university and then worked with prestigious firms in the city of london. Then i decided that there must be a reason that god somehow seen me must be a reason that god somehow seen me all this death and destruction and somehow it brought me all the way through this journey to england. He had set up an Educational Charity aiming to help train young survivors of the civil warand train young survivors of the civil war and technology. Surviving the easter bombing, dave new impetus and urgency to his plans. He is determined to help sri lankans get back on their feet. After his own lucky escape from the shangri la. Own lucky escape from the shangrila. This is a country that is given me everything in my life. I have a feeling that this kind of e nforces have a feeling that this kind of enforces why we must do more. We can ove ico m e enforces why we must do more. We can ove rco m e by enforces why we must do more. We can overcome by education. His charity is now focusing on high Tech Training to provide employment and opportunity for the young. Im alright. I want to make sure their learning, the machine learning, the ai, whatever we think the future is going be here. Two former students of his have come to colombo to help him set up his high tech academy. Of his have come to colombo to help him set up his high tech academym i brought someone from india to teach augmented reality because. Augmented reality equipment thats one of the things my passion for these guys when i was in sri lanka i wa nted these guys when i was in sri lanka i wanted to learn about hearts i had to go and read five or six books before i could understand what up because of technology the augmented reality you can see the heart literally in front of you. |j reality you can see the heart literally in front of you. I wanted to create that kind of curiosity into education. One of the things when i listen to you guys is you have this great within our culture, this amazing resilience. In shangri la bomb survivor had a car, like karen has her roots in this island. I was born in Melbourne Australia and my family sri lankans. The first time i ever went was after the end of the civil war. Ive been going back on holidays ever sense. Theres a weird sense of home when i go back. When you have an experience like this when you think youre about to die suddenly all the things you thought were important to you become quite clearly not that important. I never couldve imagined how horrific those things could be and how much devastation it can cause. And were all human. And seeing other peoples pain first hand. And so i started a not for profit fundraiser and its focused around food because i think food brings people together. Regardless of their race or religion 01 regardless of their race or religion or political view or gender. We supported a local Sri Lankan Charity called kind hearted sri lankans. They are doing all the hard work on the ground. Working with us and distributing to help people in terms of their medical needs, people who we re of their medical needs, people who were impacted. By the attacks in terms of the needs, livelihood, assistance that they require. Whether we help by providing prosthetics or beds for people so if theyre paralysed i can get out of hospital and actually moved back into their homes. An electric bed where they are not at risk of further spinal injuries. One thing im very aware of is that we cant undo what happened. And there this entrenched pain and grief that a lot of people are dealing with. We cant undo that. Butjust bringing a little bit of positivity or hope can keep someone going for a little bit longer. Like many sri lankans her and her daughter and struggling to cope after the loss of the family breadwinner. They depend on local people who rallied around to help. Those whose lives were destroyed by the bombings still struggle to comprehend these acts of hate. The attacks were in an attempt to stirup the attacks were in an attempt to stir up religious conflicts in this multi faith nation. But appeals for calm by christian leaders helped stop further widespread bloodshed. It is much important to live together because theres still love all the communities. As a christian we love eve ryo ne. All the communities. As a christian we love everyone. Even we love the people who hated us. The shangrila bombing brought three people from thousands of miles away together with one aim, to let sri lankans know they wont be forgotten. This isnt the shellac out that i knew. Its certainly not like that i know now. This could have happened anywhere in the world. And i its really important when things like this happen to move forward and learn lessons. A lot of the young people, they are hoping that we can put this behind and move forward. Its a holiday today and people are here looking at the beach in a way for help. Hope. Here looking at the beach in a way for help. Hope. When something terrible happens youre left with a huge hole in your life. Our ultimate hopeis huge hole in your life. Our ultimate hope is that anyway we as a family and isa hope is that anyway we as a family and is a world we come to recover is that something good can come out of something so evil. And weve made a start. Hello there there was some rain for the gardens of england and wales on saturday. But for the outlook its dry, essentially. High pressure is going to be in charge, over scandinavia pressure is building at the moment right the way across the uk. So sunday it looks like being a much drier day. They could be one or two showers left over in the Far Southwest. In the breeze is pushing the cloud into Western Areas allowing more sunshine. Not just in scotland but also through the midlands and eastern england. As a result its going to be warmer particularly after that dell, cloud, damp weather that we had on saturday. And those clear skies continued to develop during sunday evening. The cloud getting pushed away towards the west. Chance of shower coming through the English Channel perhaps. At least wetter weather for the south as you head into europe. Everything is getting blocked off by that large area of High Pressure and scandinavia. Influencing the weather in the uk. And it will stick around well into next week. Keeping it dry and sunny, temperatures continuing to rise. But will have some strong winds until thursday. And those winds start to really pick up on monday. We got a bit of cloud, maybe a little rain left over from the Far Southwest of england. Otherwise dry and sunny weather. Certainly a significant wind picking up through the day. Its an easterly wind. Right on the east coast it will be a bit cooler with higher temperatures always likely for the last make it 19 or 20 degrees. Across the southern and western parts of wales. That area of High Pressure certainly dominates into tuesday as well. You can see there a lot isobars on the chart. Indications that the stronger easterly winds are continuing through tuesday. Looks like its going to be a dry and sunny day. Those temperatures continuing to rise a bit during 21 degrees quite possible temperatures likely to be a bit higher across more southern counties of england. Again, a touch cooler right on those north sea coast particularly north england and east of scotland. The winds may not be quite as strong here during the wednesday force up still a latter rain to come through the mediterranean. High pressure across Northern Europe including the uk. Another dry and sunny day. Particularly windy england and wales. It mayjust take the edge off the temperatures but theres a lot of warmth in the sun this time of year and those temperatures are continuing to rise particularly across southern england and wales. As we move from wednesday and into thursday, we start to see pressure following a little bit. There arent as many isobars so they winds wont be as strong on thursday. But it still looks dry, still looks essentially sunny may feel a touch warmer because the winds it wont be as strong. Across eastern parts of england. Those temperatures still to be healthy, 21, 20 2 degrees is healthy, 21, 22 degrees is quite likely. Very similar you be seeing on wednesday for stock quite warm for western parts of scotland. For the outlook some changes the wind direction will change for a start. It remains quite light winds into next weekend spent cooler air coming down from the north. Thats because pressure is falling in scandinavia no longer an area of High Pressure there. Theres just a chance later on as we head into the following week that some areas of low pressure could come in from the atlantic and pushed down towards a more southern and Western Areas of the uk. Thats quite some way off they may be an increase in cloud it still dry. Probably wont be quite as warm you can see those temperatures arent going to be dropping away. Both fine day and also turned colder at night. 888 more people die with covid 19 in the uk, taking the total now above 15,000. It comes as the government accepts that some personal protective equipment was in short supply in england and that more needed to be done to secure stock. We have got to do more to get the ppe that people need to the front line. This is an extremely challenging situation. 84 tonnes of personal protective equipment is due to arrive tomorrow from turkey, including 400,000 gowns. The number of people who have died in care homes from coronavirus could be higher than official figures show. An extra £1. 6 billion for councils across england
