BLOOMBERG Taking Stock With Pimm Fox January 28, 2014

Lets go to su keenan for headlines. Apple reported earnings right after the bell. It is big news. Iphone sales trailed analyst estimates. They were 14. 50 a share. They predicted a profit of 14. 70 a share. Comcast is said to be near a deal to buy cable assets from charter medications. This is part of a takeover bid for time warner cable. This is according to people with knowledge of the matter. And the 22nd state to legalize marijuana is florida. Those are the top headlines today. Thank you very much, su keenan. Joining us for more about apple and a possible deal at comcast is bloombergs editor at large, cory johnson. You get the information. And alec sherman. He is also a bloomberg news. And the editor of global tech on bloomberg. Com. Good to have you all with us. Are you just looking at your iphone . What does it say . It says it is an iphone five s. The unit sales were 51 million. They were up over the previous year. Im sorry. What is the difference really . Comparing something in the threemonth. With a threemonth. The year earlier. Come on. 51 million things . And they are expensive things. They do a lot of stuff. 50 million. That is a big number, isnt it . Rather than saying good or bad. Lets talk about the growth rate. It was six percent. Six percent is not a spectacularly growing business. There was a 14 increase in the number of ipads sold. There may be a more dramatically different i pad. People can get their hands around and tie. At least i can. And then there is the cable industry. The size of the screen dictates the players. Right now you dont see the cable people, except for time warner cable, go into this. You can only get the super bowl on the fox ipad app. How is cable responding to what cory johnson is saying . Cable is aware of what is happening. The execution on doing something about it has not been up to the standards of the industry that they would like to see. Even the time warner inc. , a content company, is looking around and saying, the thing that we say is tv everywhere like 51 million iphones. Exactly. Is that accelerating as fast as we wanted to . 51 million small tvs that everyone else calls a smart phones . That is a lot of phones for sure. The slowing momentum of the iphone is a point of concern. It is not unique to apple. Globally, we are seeing demand for these highend, premium smartphones that has boosted business for apple and samsung is just slowing. They have sold as many as they can sell. The growth areas are in some of the emerging markets. China is buying. They are buying lowend phones. India is buying super lowend phones. Apple does not have a market there. It might be enough for apple to decide, ok, we will have 30 of the sales and youll will have the rest of the scraps. That is kind of what it is like. Do you think that is their motivation . I was looking at the microsoft results. But you note is doing well . The surface, the tablet. The fact that they are out there is a cable operator. How do you get back up there . And we will see many of those get return. You dont buy it. I dont see them out in the wild. The exhortation was high enough. If you dont mean something to a certain degree, growth slows. That is why when you say it is doing well what about a Cable Company comes out and says, im going to give everyone of my subscribers a free surface . Now you can watch all of your stuff on the tablet. Dish has attempted to do that. It is in the air. They are thinking more and more about how to get in the door. The problem is that there is still a mature market for pay tv. They think all the growth is going to be a mobile. That is why they want to get into the mobile distribution business. You cannot just send your singles out to the phones. You need to be a wireless carrier. And you need to have content that people want. One of the other points being made was that apple might come out with a Payment System to be competition for paypal. Yes. This is one that people have been waiting for for quite a while. Google got into this quite a while ago. It even samsung has been moving toward mobile Payment Systems where you can go to a store and more easily have your credit card tied into your device. You can pay for apps and stuff that way. Apple, in the last couple of years, when everyone was turning their attention to this, they have not made any moves, so that is a potential area of growth. There is a lot of money to be made there, potentially, but apples business has been about selling hardware. And their Fastest Growing one over the last five years has been the iphone. To see that slowing is a point of concern for investors, as we are seeing out in the market right now. The ipad is promising, but they are not blowing out of the water with that. It is still a relatively new device. Let me ask this of all of you guys. Apple tv, which of course has bloomberg tv as one of the channels you want, apple tv, it seems like that is a premium place that you want to go. People start a lot there. Is that being discounted when you see the stock go down 7. 5 . I think it is an afterthought. It even the music and the services that they sell on the side. It is a good business, though. It is. I would be happy to have the business that they were willing to part with it. One of the most interesting things about the results were seeing is that you see these devices, if you go back to the olden days of vhs, which grew at a dramatic pace, and then you saw the cell phone grow at an even faster pace, and then the smartphone even faster, and now the tablet even faster, but they are reaching a point where the growth peters out faster. That is when they are starting to think about the content that they can push through over the long haul. The big question on the apple tv has always been, do we get into content, or do we just sell devices . It is easy to sell and ipad or a tv if they are just buying the content. It is another story that they are paying billions of dollars for that confidence visibly. Thank you very much. Thank you, cory johnson, bloomberg west editorat large. I want to note that cory johnson has been part of the boomer west interview with one of technologys most successful venture capitalist. Tom perkins. They will be discussing class warfare as the topic. They will be comparing conditions with the top one percent and persecution of jews and not see germany. He will join bloomberg west exclusively to talk about his comments. From the sublime to the ridiculous, it is mystery guest time on monday, yes . Time for a clue number one. My guest helps men to groom themselves for success. Yes. The big game. The super bowl. Super bowl xlviii has landed in new jersey and new york. The Seattle Seahawks and the denver bongos have arrived. It is not just about the game for the viewers. It is also about the advertising. Since 2004, they have generated 2 billion of Network Ad Sales for more than 130 marketers. This is the Research Director of horizon media. And the leader of sqad. And representatives of smith college. Thank you, gentlemen, for being here. Broadcasting from times square were journalists are assembling to cover the big game. Have you ever seen anything like this . The amount of money that has been put in in a short amount of time is huge. You look at what they are really paying. The average price is about 3. 9 million. 30 seconds of time. Maybe it is a bargain, right . It is worth it. They have the biggest audience. Here is where im going. What is the audience expected to be . We got numbers about the grammys that was on cbs last night. 29 million. They said that is a very good level for the grammys. What are they expecting 110 . I think it will be the most watched super bowl ever. Why . The championship game was up 20 from last year. Up 10 for the regular season. Cox had the best season in 20 years. They are broadcasting a game. There are two number one teams playing each other. You will see viewers engaged throughout the whole game. It will be in new york. He it will be a festive holiday. Lets say you wanted to have a time capsule and write down some of the things that are going on in the business of sports, as brad just described, this could be the biggest ever, but it also is one that has two teams. They are not playing anywhere near their home. And the world of football you said, what . 120 million . The record is 111. Does that go down in history books . One of the things important to realize about the super bowl is that it is a male and female audience. More people watch the ads then watch the game. It is a family event. It is like a easter party or christmas party. And they dont have to say i am advertising perfume for the women or year for the men. It is the whole thing. There are different kinds of companies on the super bowl. Everybody wants to get a piece of that audience. Have you seen any of the ads . Have you seen the Arnold Schwarzenegger ad . And has a lot of hits on youtube. They are putting a lot of them online before hand. People are sharing them. And then the day after the super bowl. That is a business too. And that is my that is free. They get for nothing. And people watch the advertising. 50 million women are going to watch the super bowl. And some of the ads cost 4 million, 5 million, or 6 million to make. Companies keep doing it though, so it must be worthwhile. Thank you very much. Much appreciated. Thank you very much. The director of the rise in media. And neil from sqad. Mccartney and ringo starr performed at the grammys. Do you know who they consider the fifth beatle . We will tell you the story of his manager, Brian Epstein. And then meatloaf. My next guest built a successful career navigating the world of entertainment. His Broadway Productions have won tony awards and nominations. He received a tony for a raisin in the sun on broadway. Vivek j tiwary is out with a novel about Brian Epstein. Producer, writer, director Vivek J Tiwary joins us now. What happened . How did it go from being broadway shows to a graphic novel . What was the connection . The Brian Epstein has been with me for while. I have been thinking about it since i was at the Wharton School of business. I thought it would study the lives of the Great Entertainment visionaries. I was wanting to know how he tell people who he was. Brian epstein discovered the beatles and brought them to the unprecedented success that we know. They were unknown. He package them, presented them, give them the suit and the haircuts. No label was interested. He he convinced ed sullivan to give them a break when no british brand had ever made an impact. On the personal side, he was gay, jewish, and from liverpool. It was a felony to be gay. It was literally against the law. And that feminism was rampant. Here was this gay, jewish man running around liverpool and saying that theyre going to be bigger than elvis. He will body was crazy. But he was right, obviously. And he chase that dream with an incredible amount of passion and persistence, and he realized it spectacularly. That is why it inspires me. How did this lead to the graphic novel . I do not want to claim to have certain obstacles in my life. But i can relate to the sense of being an outsider. I was born in new york city, but my family is of indian origin. And you dont see a lot of people of my at the city working in film and broadway. I am not the only one. Though we are a rare breed. I could relate to that sense of wanting to make a change, but they sing a lot of personal obstacles in getting her. If i learned anything, it is that no dream is impossible. The most impossible dreams are the ones worth facing. The fifth beatle the Brian Epstein story. Thank you. Incredible. My next guess got his start on broadway. We will talk with grammy Award Winning singer, actor, the one and only meat loaf. He has big plans. This is taking stock on bloomberg. Lets go to su keenan. Caterpillar posted earnings. They topped analyst estimates. The Mining Company has had sales in the billions. They have seen a recovery, prompting sales of bulldozers. The posting comes the same day in which Royal Caribbean is sending one of the ships home early. The ceo confirms reports of hundreds of passengers and crewmembers are sick with a virus. The coldest december and four years discouraged buyers, along with rising interest rates. Meanwhile, some homes theyll thought climb for the first time in five months. And successful venture capitalists take on warfare. He is comparing conditions at the top one percent of americans face to the persecution of jewish people in nazi germany. He is going to speed with bloomberg west exclusively this evening to talk about his comments. Thank you. Thank you very much, su keenan. My next guest was on stage and screen before hitting it big with an album called bat out of hell. He sold more than 43 million copies of the album. He won a grammy for the award i would do anything for love. He has appeared more than 54 times in movies and television, including rocky Horror Picture Show and fight club. He is now gearing up for a 24 day show in las vegas. Meat loaf joins me now. Thank you for that. That was one of the best introductions ever. You start off with the acting, on stage, and screen. It is absolutely true, but most people never go there. They always go with bat out of hell. Lets back all the way up, as far as you want to go. Theres a lot of talk about. Lets go back to hair. When i came in december of 1969, i started hair on broadway. That was when the jets went to the super bowl. Absolutely. I am aging myself, but joe understands. Joke is that they paid me 12. 50 extra not to do the nude sent because they wanted people to stay in the theater for the second act. It was right after that that we went back and signed with motown. That was when the first recording happened, with motown. It was in 1971 with motown, under the banner of meatloaf. It got to number 11 on the charts. And then a band copied and covered it. And they had a big hit with a. So there you go. They had a big hit with the song. They kind of stole the song. That happens. You think . Then what . Then i started working for the Public Theater in lower manhattan. They created this shakespeare festival. What were you doing there . I got an agent through a friend. I have done an offbroadway show called rainbow. They said you need to have an agent if youre going to make it in new york. And so my friend got his agent to come down. His friend was jeff hunter. To make a long story short, he said du know anybody in town . I said, no. So we went down to the photo booth. To the victor. When next door and got 100 of those 44. 99. 4. 99. Then we went and met. Then i met with the man who did bat out of hell. I do not do precise answers, so if you are expecting that, forget it. So i did a song called i would love to be as heavy as jesus. He got up and started walking out of the room. And they said, by the way, it is three jesus. Then he brought back an army of people. I started singing again. Joe stop me. He said, i want you to go into this other room with this fella. And learn the song. I learned. He said, ok. Then he handed me a script. He wanted me to go home and read it. He said, there are the soldiers. And then he rode him, the soldiers. Then he said pick out which soldiers you best relate to. I read the script, and i had no idea what does a good script or bad script. So i called a friend of mine who was a director. I said, i just got handed a script. He said from where . I said from the Public Theater. I said, i do not know if it is good or not. He said, did you read it all onetime . He said were you offended by it . I said, and some parts. He said, was a funny . I said, yes. He said that it is good. I said, they want me to pick someone who i relate to. Any said, pretty relate to . And he said, which one do you relate to . And i said, the heroine addict. So i would do a song. This is part of the tour. Not a tour, i beg your pardon. A residency. The planet hollywood. It starts february 13 to april 8, right now. You never know. Im not supposed to talk about that. And there is a theme for the show. How long is the show . Is it 90 minutes . It supposed to be, but i do not know how to do 90 minutes. We went on at 730, and they were supposed to come on at 930, and one night we went on until 9 26. It is improv. My indian name is never shuts up. And i am not precise. I tend to ramble on. I want to get your thoughts about the grammys. Did you watch the monthly . No, i watched pro football. We will talk about the super bowl. Right on. My mystery Guest Company has something in common with meatloaf. And madonna. A goes by one name. More next. My guest is music legend meat loaf. We were talking during the break about all different kinds of songs. And you mentioned something having to do with gershwin. The reason im going there is because i know that you are beginning on february 13, youre going to be in las vegas. You are doing a show there. 24 dates, at least. Right now. My story, i am going to go finish that, and then im going to go to gershwin. And eventually up to end up that fight club. I can maneuver us there, no problem. We were talking about rabbit. He was from longview, texas. I started the show off like this. This was in biggest. I said, please dont apply now. I know you all came here expecting a las vegas show. I am not like the shows on the strip. I started telling him what i do not have. Then it appears behind me. All the stuff i dont have, appears behind me. I said, i do not have a fire act, and i dont have tumblrs. I do not have this. I dont have that. People were flipped out. I said all this is going to happen, but the characters not going to know what is going on until the clouds. Then we had a hold thing with the clowns. What is that thing with the clowns . And what about fight club . Im going to get there. First, i did the oldest joke in the world, look over there. Is this where your interest in acting and interest in performing where did that originate . I will tell you how to originate. It is very interesting. I wanted to get out of study hall. It was in dallas. Back in the stone age he went to school for three months at a time. They had multiple study halls. I just wanted to get out of them. This was in 1742, or something. [laughter] 1963. And i went to the second half of my sophomore year, and i said, i need to get out of study hall. They said, well, there is drama class. And that i said, i dont have to be quiet in there. I went in not expecting to do anything. I sat with my hood on, like they would have
