Surface ship has been able to locate them. Thats the frustration for searchers. They know the time is running out to find the flight data recorders. The pings they send out will start fading over the next few days. The batteries will end up dying after 30 days. Retired lieutenant michael kay is back with us. Alongside him is christine denison. She is an Ocean Explorer and logistics expert. I want to start with you about this new potential discovery. 122 pieces of possible debris or at least objects spotted in an area a lot smaller than we have been dealing with in the past, about 400 square kilometers. They range in size up to 70 feet. Some are much smaller. Some are brightly colored. This seems to have a lot of analysts excited about this. What is the significance of this find . I think it is wise we are calling these objects now and not calling them debris from the outseat. We have seen from previous imagery, from the start, when we had that first satellite image provided by the u. S. That the australian Prime Minister spoke about, that proved to be a bit of a red herring. We have seen that these potential satellite images can be freighters, parts of ships, refractions of light, dolphins. What i would say, is there are 122 pieces. That seems like an accurate assessment from a satellite. Potentially, a higher resolution satellite. My analysis is leading me down the path that it would be harder to mistake 122 objects for a pod of dolphins, et cetera. What i would say as well is every piece of evidence that we are getting, we should be treating it as a huge jigsaw. There is no one piece of evidence that is going to be the eureka evidence. There is going to be no silver bullet. We need to treat each piece of evidence as the single bit of the jigsaw. We place it in and step back. Christine, the race is on to get to the place where those objects were spotted. This image was taken on sunday. We have had a store move into the already difficult seas. The challenge is to locate them once again. Talk to us about that. That, they could be miles. We were talking to a currents experts earlier today. They could be moving about a mile an hour. Thats very fast. Thats absolutely right. I agree with michael it is a very positive thing that we have 120 over a large area which they are seeing objects. It makes it easier for them to follow them, really. As opposed to one or two that are bobbing in the ocean which, again, weather is always going to be a factor. I this i that this is very positive and hopefully, they will make contact with these objects. They are still backtracking, they are still following this around thichl around. This is the south indian ocean. It is inhospitable. We have said this enough. It is remote. We have a large team deployed there. We do have the resources on site at the moment which is more positive. We are moving ahead. Time is running out. Again, getting to these objects and being able to identify them, you have more eyes out there that are going to be able to follow them back and working with the experts. It is surprising to me actually that they took this picture on sunday. They didnt get the data back, we think, until today, to try to send this search plane to the pinpoint area. It is within the area that they are searching. They had 12 planes out today. Five surface ships out today. Michael, it does seem a little surprising to me that they havent been able to pick up more signs. The satellite seeing 122 pieces of debris. How come the planes havent seen it yet. A number of reasons. I think the analogy of looking for a needle in a haystack is a good one. Once we found the haystack, that is where christine talents come in in finding the needle subsurface. Weather is a huge, huge player in this. Ive conducted Search Operations over the ocean. When you have a good day of weather, it is phenominal. You can really, really search and scan. That ends up being a whole day, because they have that long trek out there. They need to reserve that. Brilliant point. It is the logistics of the situation. When that weather comes in, the cloud bases come down at 200 feet. The rain start falling and the visibility comes into 500 kilometers. Sometimes you get their Goldfish Bowl effect. It becomes impossible. The mark of an eyeball, the guys looking outside of the aircraft is as important as all of this Sophisticated Technology you have down the back from the thermal images and the synthetic radar and the magnetic detectors. The eyeball is equally as important. When that weather comes in, it makes it impossible. As we have heard time and time again, from the guys doing a fantastic job over the operation. You have to be let tiiterally o the top. Lets hope the weather cooperates. It has to. Another system coming in cob a huge setback. Lets take a look at some other headlines. To Washington State where there is another grim day of searching. Authorities say they have located eight more bodies buried under the rubble of saturdays landslide but have not been able to reach them. 16 people already confirmed dead, some 176 others are listed as missing. This is why there is a lot of excitement. You hinted at it a moment ago. These are things that simply look like they might be something from a debris field. It looks like the right thing. It is in the right area generally. If you look at the search areas, you compare to where this has been found. Look at the search areas. They are right in the same general zone there. And they would fit the pattern of what you see when a big plane like this goes in the water. Look at the wreckage from twa. The fuel tank exploded here. That changed things a bit. A lot of the damage came when it hit the ground and reconstructed it. Lots of little pieces that are capable of floating. You talk about seat cushions, things like that. Still, here is the big challenge. When you say, why cant they find it . Maybe it has to do with the fact that this is a moving target. Think about the plane coming into this area if the theories are correct. They draw a grid down here to search for this plane all out across the water. The grid is huge compared to the plane. We are showing the plane so you can see it here. It would be a speck in all of this. They dont know when the fuel ran out on this plane. If it ran out early, it could have gone in way up here at the northern end where it could have gone to one side or the other or it could have gone much further down. What they have to do now is look at the pattern of where they found this debris if it turns out to be the right thing and say to themselves, does this represent where the plane went down. Did it go down there. Is that why the debris is there . Or does this tiny place where we found the debris, if it is the right thing, has it been drifting for days here . Has cit come from much further p in the chain . Is the bulk of the plane much further away . Bear if mind, if this were drifting at 2 miles an hour, which is not ridiculous for that area, this could cover about 150 miles in three days. So in all the time since this plane went down, any debris you find out there could be quite a good distance off. John, michaela. When the currents are at play, it can be a game changer. Plane wreckage in the deep sea before. What you are looking at, it is being deployed from the back of the ship. It is a cavity. It is going to drop into the water. You are going to see it in just a moment. Im actually going to come around so that i can show you exactly how this is done. It is going to get deployed into the water. For our purposes, it is tethered. We are not in the middle of the ocean. We are on a dock. If this were the indian ocean, you would be able to see it deploy and its buoyant. You are going to see it on the surface as soon as it is on the water. Here is the deal. Here is how it works. There is a crew inside a control room that programs what this is going to do. In the case of the mh370, it would go down several miles into the indian ocean and it would start mapping the ocean floor. At this point, if the search area is narrowed, it would start looking for the debris field. Thats the one thing that this probe would be able to do. Then, hear this. You are able to take stills with this technology. It could be the first eyes on the wreckage. Micayla, john . This is really impressive to see the arsenal we now have on hand. Weve been talking about the search area for flight 370 now kind of being divided into two sectors. Give us an idea on the parts that have been focused on for the search. Reporter even though this search area is about a fourth of the size it once was, it is still a huge area. 569,000 square nautical miles. Thats the size of mexico. They are divided it up into an east and west quadrant. It takes from pierce air force base here in perth, it takes hours to fly over it just to get there. They are going to divide up areas to find the debris airfield. We know that one of the concerns the other day was a storm moving in to already this perilous area. Are they feeling hopeful about the forecast for tomorrow in terms of searching . Any are feeling hopeful. Pilots were telling us that today were some of the best conditions we were seeing. You can have great visibility one minute, zero the next. We have 12 planes ready to go, six tackling the east, six tackling the west, plus five ships and the underwater vehicles are going to be out over the next few days and weeks ahead. 122 possible objects spotted in that region. Nevertheless, this is another new lead that will help direct the search. These were spotted on satellite. Now, they need to be found and secured for a second time by the flotilla ships and the planes that are looking through one of the most remote and most hostile places on the planet. It has to be somewhere. So hopefully we will find the right spot. It is making people crazy they havent been able to. The satellites picked them up. Why cant we locate them. It is such a vast area. We need to remind people of. We havent looked in the right place yet. We havent looked in real time at the ocean. We are seeing all this stuff on the satellite. By the time we get there four days later, it is heavy currents and chaotic currents. If it was there four days ago, it is somewhere else later. It is naturally frustrating. It is not failure if you go to an area and look and something is not there. Thats positive information. You have to rule it out and look somewhere else. It does narrow down this big ocean a little bit. The 122 possible objects spotted by the satellite, thats one big lead. There has been another Big Development over the last 24 hours or so. Thats the news about the analysis from the inmarsat satellite data. The partial hand shake, there were a series of handshakes we knew about. Then, the partial handshake. What does that mean to you and what is the rianeanalysis. This is fascinating. We know at 2 20 a. M. , that plane made a turn. After that urn it, there were three pings in rapid succession. They believe that those rapid pings have to do with a rapid change in altitude. That may be why those pings were generated. So with this final ping, which was a failed hand shake, it may be that that too was generated by a rather rapid change in altitude, which, of course, could mean the planes final path into the ocean and could give them a great lead in terms of pinpointing where the plane went in. One other hint. There has been a lot of controversy, about whether this is a ghost plane flying itself or whether pilots were directing it to the most remote part of the ocean. That has to do with whether it was a magnetic course or a great circle route. A direct would be like this and a magnetic would be more of a curve. If the autopilot werent set by a human pilot, it was just sort of drifted on its own. Where as, a great circle route would mean the pilot set the course and deliberately meant to go into the indian ocean. Those are two great hints into exactly where this plane may have entered the ocean. Any sign of which one it could be. Does the data yet tell us which is the more likely . I have read through all the blogs. They arent really clear on this yet. They seem to side a little bit more towards the magnetic. The other reason this would make a difference, if you are following the trajectory of the airplane . Are you going to follow the debris field down here or like this, more of a curve . We have seen those two different routes there. The other thing going a little bit more for a delivered route, we saw after it crossed the malaysian peninsula, it made a couple more turns before it headed further south down to its final destination. Interesting, fascinating. Some of the questions. Amazing stuff. The aviation blogs have been fans tick fantastic on this. They deal with this stuff every single day. This satellite, it drifts north and south. When they talk about this doppler effect, it is if you are trying to i sa, is the siren coming from this side or that site. You might shift your head. The satellite shifts north and south. The blogs also point out that this isnt real hard data. Thats why they are still a little bit uncomfortable with this analysis. It has been brilliant. Why dont you believe the data and the answers from the malaysian government, because you have said time and time again that you believe the malaysian government is actually hiding something. Why do you believe that . Well, because the conclusion is just by a theory. Is just by analysis from the data. There is no direct evidence that shows up that they summed up some of the things from the plane. I dont believe in such kind of a conclusion. The data from the Satellite Company and from the u. K. , the aviation authority, has been collected. The malaysian authorities have taken that into account and when you take into account also the amount of fuel that the plane would have had at that point. They are saying the logical conclusion is that it was in this part of the southern corridor in the indian ocean. Why is that not good enough for you . Because it is still a theory. It is just still analysis, no one has seen anything. They just said that it should be, or where it might be. It should turn back. They say that it is based on the speed for the whole theory. But, if the plane is out, it might come to a different result. The families have been having meetings with the highlevel delegation from malaysia. You have asked very technical questions, even questions about the civilian radar and military radar. Have you asked the question about after 1 00 a. M. When the civilian radar lost contact with the plane and then after 2 00 a. M. With military radar losing contact . Have you asked the question about whether or not the civilian radar team passed on their information to the military radar team and what had they said to the families . Well, what they said is, i think, ridiculous. First, they said we are in the same office. So if we lose a contact from the radar, we so they could help us. After that, they said, we are in the same building. So it take time for us to notice the military side. Well, from the beginning, it was ridiculous. They gave different answers several times. Last, they confirmed that we have the tracking on the military radar from the beginning but they didnt do anything. Lets talk about your level of hope. A few days ago when you and i talked, you had said that you are realistic but at the same time, you feel most families are sort of 80 ready for bad news, 20 hoping for good news still. Today, where do you stand in terms of hope . Well, to me, i think it might be 5 that there is still hope but most of the families dont believe the bad news. Most of the families think there will be hope. When you say 5 hope, hope for yourself. Hope for what . That it was maybe negotiating by the hijacker and the government or Something Like that and they are just imprisoned by some of the hijackers and stuff like that. They are still negotiating, i think. I dont think malaysia air will be able so at a minimum, the Montreal Convention at a minimum, in your mind, the Montreal Convention rules will apply, which will be over 100,000 per person. Beyond that, frank, this is an awfully complicated case. Passengers from 15 countries. Malaysia air and malaysian airline. An american plane, the boeing plane. You know, the first legal steps we understand were just taken for some kind of possible suit in illinois. What can you tell us about this . Well, john, ill tell you. This is one of these days when im embarrassed to be a lawyer. I can tell you, first of all, this is not a lawsuit, its a petition for discovery. Its wrongfully used, in my opinion. A petition for discovery is a unique procedure under illinois law that allows an injured person to discover the identity of a party against whom they may want to bring a suit. Its not to be used for the purpose this law firm is using it. In my opinion, this is nothing more than a shameful marketing ploy to get clients. Its embarrassing. To me personally. As a lawyer. I can guarantee you, ive been practicing in illinois for 37 years. I can guarantee you, there is absolutely no chance that the families will obtain any investigation evidence as a result of the filing of this petition for discovery. Its just not very strong language. Not what it was intended to do. Well, it is. And i stand by it. Im glad you spoke your mind here. I want to ask you about something we used to sort of reference, the fact this is a complex situation because theres so many people internationally who have got this americanmade jet, et cetera, et cetera. We know that americans generally are more litigious. Do you think were going to see some malaysians trying to find american representation here to pursue litigation or will they pursue in their own countries . How do you see it playing out . Well, definitely, i think that there will be other nonamerican seeking american representation. Ive been in contact with some of the families discussing this already. Its a little early to be doing anything, but we have been in discussions. And, you know, whats funny, michaela not funny, but what is in some ways shameful again is the despair treatment that theyre likely to receive, based on their nagsality. You could have the same person, same age, same number of dependents and may be worth a fraction of what an americans would be. You say whats going on in illinois is shameful. But do you believe these families and passengers have some legal right to compensation here, yes . Oh, they absolutely do. And its a matter of doing it the right way. My point, john, is just that dont go off filing something thats never going to work, and let other families think youre doing something for them whennit not going to work. Do it in a responsible manner that a competent, able, aviation attorney with that particular expertise will know what to do. And this is certainly not the time line yet, as you said, premature at this point. But we anticipate that were going to be talking more about this in the coming weeks and months. We should point out to you, were waiting a press conference, press briefing at the top of the hour there in arlington, where we expect that authorities and some of the Emergency Management folk will update us on the latest conditions of the search and the latest efforts to search for survivors. At this point, what we do know is that authorities have spotted what they believe are eight more bodies that are buried, but they have not been able to reach them because of the debris from the landslide that smashed through two towns. Right now the death toll stands at 16 and some 176 others missing. No one has been found alive since survivors were pulled from the muck and debris on saturday. We now have video of one of these harrowing rescues. I want to bring in bill weir. Whats the latest . Reporter john, yeah, weve just gotten this video of what was probably the brightest moments of the search and rescue. This is the camera they have mounted on the winch in a rescue helicopter, you see them helping out this 4yearold boy and his father as they try to climb to the top of that debris pile. Helicopters were needed on saturday, but these days, the tools of choice are shovels and bare hands, because there have been no signs of life. They found a dog a couple days ago trapped. And that sort of lifted the spirits. But even with their, you know, sort of earthquake equipment, search and rescue teams in this part of the world, because this is an earthquake zone, they have all of the stuff you need. The microphones and the little cameras you can put into voids, but that has not really done much good. And as they talk to the searchers, some hold out hope, some say hey, my dad was a survivalist. We think hes up there somewhere, he just needs a hand. But others like a gentleman i met by the name of dain brunner, he has been looking for his sister, who was on the phone with their mother driving on highway 530. It went dead at the moment that the slide hit. And so he says it was two days ago that he and his 16yearold son came to the realization that they were no longer looking to rescue his sister, but recover her body. This is what he had to say. A chance to mourn your sister, to no. So call this in . No, ive had my moments. Mainly with my family members and stuff, and my boys. And my wife. But i i havent had a chance to sit and just let it all out. Because im still in this adrenaline mode, where i need we need to get her, and we need to bring her home. Because thats what my mom wants. My mom wants my mom wants to hold her one last time. And thats what we want to do. Reporter just that thought, i think, put most of us into emotional pieces. Dain is a cop, so hes tougher than most. But hes back out here this morning. Hes heading on to the pile to keep searching, and he tells me also that his team, theyre not just looking for bodies, but recovered a Wedding Dress and photo album and a diploma. So these sort of human signs of life, mik and john, really drives it home. It really does. And im sure being there you feel it that more acutely. Were also seeing cnn has their hands on this report by the county from 2010, bill, that warned of landslides in this area. Have you had a chance to look at that . Reporter i have. Yeah. This came to light in after one of the federal or one of the county Emergency Management Officials Say we couldnt see this coming. This area was completely safe. Well, no, its not. They have known about this for a long time. In fact, they spent federal money to do a survey, they had geologists, engineers look and identify the riskiest places and this town was one of them. But then what do you do . How do you get people out of these areas . They love this place, for obvious reasons. But this is the price they see of such a beautiful spot.
