Perspective. Pete buttigieg has raised just under 25 million, andrew yangs campaign announcing it pulled in 16. 5 million over that same period. Other top contenders like joe biden and elizabeth warren, we havent heard about their final numbers yet. Meanwhile,
Julian Castro
, the only latino candidate in the democratic field announced this morning that hes ending his president ial campaign. Joining me now to talk about all of this cnn
Political Correspondent
and political analyst. Lets break down these numbers. I think its hard to understate just how big this haul is for
Bernie Sanders
. Thats right, this is a stunning number, again, 34. 5 million. As you know very well, this is the most amount of money that he has been able to raise in a single quarter during this campaign and the most that any of the
Democratic Candidates
has raised in a single quarter in the 2020 race. And this really does underscore the political strength that is behind
Bernie Sanders
right now. The large base of loyal supporters that he has been harnessing this kind of support from, they are continuing to give. And the fact that so many of his donations come in the form of grass roots small dollar donations means that they can continue to give, other than, you know, compared to the other sort of donors who max out to certain campaigns who cant actually give once they give the first time. Bernie sanders is backed by a lot of these gross roots supporters who continue to power his campaign, as we head into the month of iowa. Now, there are two other numbers that we should talk about. Pete buttigieg, first of all, raising 24. 7 million, thats nothing to laugh at. And andrew yang, as you mentioned, raising 16. 5 million. For buttigieg, this is very interesting, because he has had a strong couple of months. He has been sort of the candidate to watch and we are now seeing that the money is following through on his political momentum. And for andrew yang also interesting because i think last year there was a time when he was very much an unknown candidate. We might not have necessarily expected that he would be so resilient, but here we are, both of these candidates showing some strong backing in terms of their financial strength. Lets go back to sanders. He raised 18 million in december just alone. The knock on sanders and his campaign that it is not necessarily wide, but just deep, and not necessarily growing. But his campaign touting that they have 300,000 people in this quarter who donated to him this time around that have never donated to him before. Is this a sign that perhaps sanders support is starting to grow heading into the
Iowa Caucuses
. Well, it may be that sign that senator sanders is coalescing the liberal wing of the party and thats important, particularly for senator warren who has seen her numbers fall since her medicare for all plan was released. I think these numbers reflect a lot of what weve been seeing in the polling, which is that senator sanders has bounced back very strongly from his heart attack in the fall. Dont forget when that happened, when he had that heart attack, there were a lot of questions about whether his campaign would be able to go on. But i think it allowed him to sort of gather his support, he picked up the endorsement of congresswoman
Ocascio Cortez
and hes been able to emerge as the challenger in this race. For those on the more moderate side of the fence in the party, these numbers are concerning because it means that senator sanders will have the traction to continue very long and very deep into this primary if he should want to. Even if it becomes clear that hes unable to capture the nomination. And that is a concern that some of the party have raised. There are many people who would like to see the party cool less around a come knee earlier and allow them to get their forces together against
President Trump
. Senator sanders money means that he will be able to stay in the race for quite a while. Lets talk more about
President Trump
s fundraising, mj. Weve seen some considerable numbers from democrats, but president
Trumps Campaign
is doing pretty well, too. Thats right, looking ahead at the general election, president
Trumps Campaign
announcing that it raised 46 million in the final quarter of 2019. And it has 102. 7 million of cash on hand. This of course doesnt even include the mun eye that was raised by the rnc which will go towards trumps reelection efforts as well. This is sort of an apples to oranges comparison. If youre comparing
President Trump
s fundraising numbers to that of the democrats, but it still goes to show, yes, he is the incumbent president and yes, there are differences in that he is not competing in a large field of republican candidates. In fact, hes the only person running for the nomination, even still, though, i think this is a stark reminder for the
Democratic Candidates
who are still in the race that they really have a very large
Treasure Chest
in supporting
President Trump
that they have to contend with come next year and come the general election. And lee va, before we go, just a note on high schojulian why did he fail to gain traction. He was the only latino and he had ground in this contest, but he just couldnt make it happen. I think he is someone who comes out of this president ial campaign stronger. I think he raised his profile and i think he sort of defined himself a little bit better in the minds of a lot of democrats and a lot of
Democratic Party
voters. That could help him in the future, particularly say a democrat wins the presidency and has to stock a cabinet. He is someone whose name would be on some of those lists. But this was not it just wasnt going to happen for him and if you cant make it to iowa, you certainly are not going to win the nomination. And maybe an early frontrunner for the vp, which well be talking about. Thank you so much. We appreciate it. With just 32 days to go until the
Iowa Caucuses
, the leading
Democratic Candidates
are now focusing their energy on the hawkeye state. Lets go there, to iowa, and joining me outside the
Sanders Campaign
bus in des moines, the sanders 2020 president ial campaign manager. Lets talk about this massive fundraising haul that you guys were able to pull in. 18 million raised in december alone and im very interested in the new donors that you have funneling into this campaign. Is this a sign that the support for your candidate is growing . Well, hi, ryan. Hope youre doing well. Its nice out here in iowa. We are feeling strong about this campaign. It is a movement thats been growing. Weve been working very hard. As ive told you and many people over the course of this campaign, is that we urged our volunteers to go kick the tires on a lot of candidates and we felt strongly as we headed into the
Fourth Quarter
people would start to come back home to
Bernie Sanders
, because they will see him the candidate thats positioned to beat donald trump, but also the candidate they trust to make the change happen that they want. We are seeing that evidenced in some of our fundraising numbers. To me the most important thing about the numbers is that it is people. And if youre going to defeat donald trump, youre going to have to beat him with people power. Mayor
Pete Buttigieg
has said that he believes in order for a democrat to win you need to be able to tap into all legal fundraising resources in order to fund the type of campaign that can beat donald trump. You guys have been consistent and competitive in the democratic primary by not taking super pac money and only taking individual donors and for the most part small donors. But what happens if you win the nomination . Are you going to be able to sustain that against
President Trump
and will you hold firm ad not change your fundraising strategy should sanders become the nominee . We will hold firm and not change a damn thing. Its working because the working class believes in
Bernie Sanders
to defeat donald trump. Youve got somebody who has built a grass roots network, who has been fighting for the working class. Were not going to go into a general election suddenly claiming that were going to need money from millionaires and billionaires. With 50 million contributions we think we can get at 20, 25, you would have over a billion, enough to fight for the working class who needs a champion for them, who knows donald trump has betrayed them. So if you have
Pete Buttigieg
and joe biden telling you that they need to kowtow at with the rich, we are upending the notions. You can fund this in a grass roots way. And the problem with it, to joe biden or
Pete Buttigieg
or anybody else to wants to kowtow to the rich, they are telling you that those people who have power influence over our economy right now, over our political system will continue to have that influence when theyre in the white house. Do do you think they give the money . That is an effort to buy influence over the political process. So if theyre going to fund raise it, theyre going to have influence over your health care and environmental policy, theyre going to have influence over every kind of policy within the federal government and even the people who serve in government. Thats something brernie sander has always rejected and he does so in a way that i think the working class believes in, that he will be a different president who would organize the presidency in a different way than weve seen in different history. But youre going to need to unify the
Democratic Party
should senator sanders become the nominee. I know you said youre not going to accept corporate donations from the dnc. Are you concerned at all that this could be somewhat of a rub between you and
Democratic Leaders
that truly believe you need all the
Resources Available
to you to beat donald trump . Well, ryan, what i would say to that is we firmly believe that everyone will understand within the
Democratic Party
that there is a thing that bonds all of us together, and that is the need to defeat donald trump. We may have our disagreements in a general election, we may come at our issues in a different perspective. We will do our part if we are the nominee to extend the open hand, to welcome people into this movement. If theres people out there who would like to join and endorse
Bernie Sanders
, we become you right now. We will do our part to make sure that we are bringing this party together, returning it to its roots, the lyndon b. Johnson of fighting for the working class of america. The policies that benefit everybody. And i think we can show that this will be politically useful and beneficial to the party. I dont have any concerns about it, and obviously if were not the nominee, well support the nominee. Lets talk about policy. Obviously medicare for all, health care has been a backbone of the
Sanders Campaign
. Recently in town halls the senator has been challenged by those that work in the
Health Care Industry
concerned about what happens to their job once they get medicare for all passed. What do you say to those folks, a little nervous about that, and also to some americans that like the option of private
Health Insurance
. What is your message to that group of voters . We have a system right now that basic has administrative costs, hundreds of billions of dollars really to deny people
Health Insurance
when they need it the most. And that is why when you call the person on the healing insurance line, theyre being paid to find a way to deny you care. It is a dysfunctional broken system and were paying for it. Right now i think we can build it in a much more efficient way. Medicare for all, to focus on providing health care. Theres a shortage of doctors. If you go out into rural areas of this state, rural hospitals are shutting down, there are not enough doctors or physicians or nurses. Dont tell me there arent more jobs available. Were subsidizing jobs that are br bureaucratic, so i feel strongly that well have a path that offers a transition for those currently in the
Health Insurance
industry. And i believe when they see the benefits of a system that reduces costs for every family in america, people are going to buy into it. They just want to know are you going to get there, can we achieve this . And the reason you achieve it is with the movement were building right now. Were going to have to leave it there. Obviously a big fundraising haul for you and your campaign. You always tell me youre somewhere between a four and six on a scale of one to ten. Where are you today . 5. 5. Always in the middle. All right, live from des moines, iowa. Just about 30 days ahead of the
Iowa Caucuses
. Coming up, stunning new images reveal the extent of damage inside the u. S. Embassy in baghdad after hundreds of protesters left. We are live in iraq with the latest details. President Trump at the start of the new year. He also faces a new weapons threat from north korea. Its leader, kim jongun, now saying his country no longer feels found by the moratorium of
Testing Nuclear weapons and longrange ballistic missiles. Kim warning the world will witness a new strategic weapon in the near future. This comes a year and a half after
President Trump claimed there was no longer a
Nuclear Threat from north korea. Joining me now to discuss all of this, marc hurdling, cnn military analyst and a former commanding general of the
Us Army Europe and 7th army. So general, do you think that
President Trump has been naive in his dealings with north korea and iran . I think, ryan, that it is a lack of understanding of the history and the culture of not only iran and north korea, but many other nations throughout the world where we are having challenges in national security. I would add to that list ukraine, russia, china, in the south china sea. Some of the things that other nations are doing. And thats why its so important to have allies who are likeminded, who have the similar value systems, to counter some of these threats. In the case of iran, as you were just talking to arwa, its an understanding that these malitias and i use that word purposely, these military fors th forces that arwa was talking about are beholden to different politicians in iraq. It is the extreme form of a nonregulated malitia like we state in our constitution. These are malitias that will fight, but they are iraqis. In the terms of north korea, you have a thirdgeneration leader in kim who, when you take a look at the history of north korea and what has happened over the last 50 years, youll see that the requirement to have a
Nuclear Force is important for survival. And just because you have a president who thinks he has a personality that can make a deal, doesnt mean youre going to throw away the history of culture. Thats whats critically important about reading the intelligence and the background behind some of the actions by these countries. And you just named two. There are many more that fit in the same category. You mentioned how a lot of these issues in iraq, whether they may be iranian backed, these are still iraqi citizens and youve tweeted that iran proxy battles are a top concern for 2020 and that they could disrupt u. S. Relations with iraq. You mention that the president doesnt seem to understand the full breadth of exactly whats happening in the region. How do they change their
Foreign Policy to address these potential proxy wars and the koezier relationship between iran and iraq . I did tweet that. I believe that. But its also the belief of the council of foreign relations. They put potential for proxy battles between the u. S. And iran, or some of the u. S. Allies, as one of their top five concerns for 2020. And the iraq is the
Battle Ground for that. Knowing that, its important to consider that we have some very strong allies in the government of iraq. Sala, the president of iraq, is a very good friend of the
United States. He has been a colleague of ours over you know, he was a good friend of mine when i was in iraq for over three years. This is an individual who the iraqi thomas jefferson, if you will, who is trying to bring democratic reforms to that country. We have made it even harder for him by not collaborating with the
Iraqi Government in addressing these malitias and you have to understand that iraq certainly is going to be beholden to iran to a degree. They are in fact their neighbor. They share over 1,000 miles of border with iran and they get most of their materials and exchange of the economic systems with iran. So you have to take that into consideration when youre dealing with other nations and to disrespect iran like i think the
United States did with some of the actions over the last six months, is counterproductive to the type of relationships we need to help bring those kind of countries forward, like iraq. Lieutenant general mark hurdling, were going to have to leave it there. Thank you so much. Thank you. A grim update on one of the victims stabbed at a hanukkah celebration in new york. A sad development in the horrible stabbing attack during the hanukkah celebration in new york. The family of one of the victims spoke to the media last hour to give an update on
Josef Neumann and they say it is not good. Brynn is joining me in monsey, new york. Give us the latest on the victims condition. Reporter like you said, the prognosis for
Josef Neumann is not good. Hes undergoing surgery right now. The doctors are trying to help him eat and breathe. He is in a coma, not a medically in dunes induced coma. He has not regained consciousness since the attack happened over the weekend. The family released a picture and this is a very graphic picture, but they let us see exactly the extent of his injuries and you can see from this picture how horrific it is. The family says he was stabbed in the throat, of course he has head injuries to his skull and then weve learned also that he has a shattered arm that cant even be treated right now because of the other injuries. And the family said it was a difficult decision to release this picture as graphic as it is, but they said they had to because so many people were reaching out to them saying when is your dad going to be okay, how is he doing. And they started to realize people didnt understand the severity of how bad and how vicious this attack was. And so thats why they decided as a family to release this picture. And today at the
News Conference they really wanted to send a message after all of this has happened over the weekend. Take a listen to what they had to say. We want our kids to go to school and feel safe, we want to go to our synagogues and feel safe. We want to go to groceries and malls and feel safe. We hope he a wakes to a changed world with peace, unity and love for all. Reporter you can just see the state that theyre in at this point. Her brother, always going to the rabbis house every weekend. He said its just by chance he did not go this saturday for this celebration. He said by the grace of god, because hes got
Young Children as well. But again, they are just staying hopeful at this point, but they dont think its going to turn out good for them, ryan. A sad development in that story. Thank you for the updachlt we appreciate it. Coming up, the senate is back in session tomorrow and all eyes are on nancy pelosi and when shell hand over the articles of impeachment. Congress is getting ready to return from its holiday recess and we still dont know when
President Trumps impeachment trial will begin. We do know that
Senate Majority leader
Mitch Mcconnell is expected to speak about impeachment tomorrow on the senate floor. Sources are telling cnn that mcconnell is fine waiting out speaker pelosi, who still hasnt sent the articles of impeachment over to the senate. So joining me now, congressman, a democrat from new york. Hes a member of the
Foreign Affairs committee. Theres a lot of topics were going to hit on, if thats already. Lets start with impeachment. Weve got a staring contest right now between the speaker and majority leader. How long can this last . I think it needs to go as far as it needs to go so the
American People feel konch deco that the process is fair and honest and its not a sham, its not a kangaroo court, and this gives the senate the exclusive power of the trial. So this must be a fair and honest process. I think thats what the
American People want. I think both mcconnell and leader schumer should sit down and work out of the rules of the game and they should be fair and equitable. I think thats what were waiting for. Witnesses seems to be one of the big holdups, at least from the democratic side. Weve seen some republicans open to the idea,
Susan Collins and some others. I wonder if you would be comfortable that the agreement was made that well bring witnesses in but well do closed door depositions, similar to what was done during the clinton impeachment. Or do you think a fair trial means they come and testify publicly . I believe in an open windows approach, let the air come in so its not toxic and its transparent. Look, we had a process, the first three committees, the oversight, intelligence and
Foreign Affairs committee that im part of, that heard witnesses, close to 20 witnesses. It was sort of like closed door, but the republicans were there and they were questioning and crossexamining the witnesses. Then we had an open public hearing process with the intelligence committee, where many of those witnesses came back openly in front of the
American People and testified once again. And finally, the
Judiciary Committee had its own process, which was fully open to the public, where they drafted the articles of impeachment. So we had a very deliberate and professional process that the
American People i think some of those committees were working right through the weekends. We did a lot of work to ensure that it moved forward, that it was fair, honest and rapid. I think that the senate should do the same thing. Lets shift now to iraq, the situation there. Its great to have you here because youre on the
Foreign Affairs committee. Obviously youve seen these pictures of whats happening at the u. S. Embassy, the lobby burned out. This still seems to be a volatile situation, even though the protesters have stepped back. The president has touted his hard line on iran. Do you think his position here as actually made the situation more dangerous . I think the region is becoming more and more dangerous and that is happening because of a lack of a coherent strategy and policy. What our allies, i think were doing this unilaterally, i think thats a mistake. We should go to the table with our allies who really have a broad and comprehensive strategy and policy for the region. And thats why we lost footing and control in syria. And the russians, of course, in iran stepped in. The same is happening right now in iraq. Our lack of a policy for iraq, a comprehensive plan, strategy for iraq, has put us in a position where we struck back. But one strike is not a policy. And so were not in a good position and were getting ready to lose iraq after being there for years and years, and many of our men and women gave up their lives for that region to be safer. And its not safer right now. So if im understanding you correctly, you talk about the air strike against the iranianbacked malitia to kind of led to the fallout in front of the embassy. Do you think the administration did that without the forethought of what the kbikimplications co be . They need to have more of a longterm strategy and talk to our allies in the region and europe so we can do this as a coalition, not as the
United States on its own unilaterally taking these steps, that maybe yield some returns shortterm, but longterm i think its a disaster. So we must come up with a comprehensive plan. I imagine you feel the same way with north korea, initially you saw
President Trump offering the olive branch to kim jongun, summits were held. It seemed as though progress had been made. In your view are we right back to where we were before the outreach happened . I think the president engaged in a confidence game with the kim regime. Its almost like a car game where the odds are set against you and you engage the confidence game not knowing that youre being set up. I think kim got the very best of him. Weve got to go, but i just want to ask you about
Julian Castro leaving the race, meaning that there isnt a latino candidate in the race. Are you concerned about the democratic field and the lack of diversity . I think that the
Latino Community for too long has felt somewhat abandoned and not heard. I think he filled that void. I think the candidates that are still in the race should be proactive in making sure they engage that community. The last election was i think the year of the women. The next elections i think will be the year of the latinos and those candidates that do well for that community, then will obviously be decisive in places like florida and like pennsylvania, where you have pockets of latino communities, ohio, arizona, nevada. Those states are important for a win. They need to engage our community. Congressman, thank you so much for being here. Happy new year to you. Same to you. Mass Shootings sometimes leave the country in disbelief in places like baltimore and chicago, gun violence is a way of life. What we think of
Smart Policing has to be much smarter, more focused. Charlie beck is now the interim
Police Superintendent in chicago, a city that ended 2019 with a more than 10 drop in murders for a third year in a row, and down more than 30 since the spike in 2016 that saw more killings than new york and l. A. Combined. What are some of the questions that you get about the city of chicago, about crime in chicago, and how do you answer those questions . To be brutally honest, its still not safe enough. 500 homicides, even though thats a nice milestone, its way too many. But its not just policing. Even hospitals are trying to break this deadly cycle, taking time to sit with shooting victims and evaluate lives. We use this opportunity to drill down on people on not only their risk factors, but their hopes, their dreams, their

Theyre among tactics being used in cities across the country, trying to change what has become in some places an unshakeable narrative. Often in the high murder rates of big cities, new orleans has made progress, seeing a third of its homicides drop in the last year. But st. Louis, who had the biggest murder rate in recent years, ended with more homicides. And cities like new york and los angeles didnt even hit that mark, and they have more than five times the people. We could talk all day about what to do after someone is killed, but we must also have the hard conversation about why the perpetrators of violence have no regard for human life. Reporter baltimore is now one of seven cities in the justice of relentless pursuit in the issue aimed at combatting violence crime. Congress approved millions for research into gun violence for the first time in 20 years. Federal and gun violence meant to go hand in hand at the dawn of a new decade.
