Reporter thats right, john. Today is a series of goodbye for george floyd of the next few days. A few moment ago we saw the casket arrived here at North Central university in Downtown Minneapolis and over the course of the service, we are expecting to hear from family members and attorney for the family, ben crump and it will be eulogized. The family is waking up with all four officers charges and four officers facing charges, part of what they wish for this entire process. We heard from the familys attorney, it is not just about arresting these officers but trying to go to the next step of convictions as well. What we heard from Keith Ellison that this whole process will take months, processing this main for the family is going to take so much longer and this day of memorial bringing all these people together is part of that healing process. We spoke to friends of the family and george floyd and stephen jackson, one of the things he said was George Floyds name is going to be a name of change. Today we begin to process a legacy. Thats what well begin to see unfold and just a few hours now as well. When i say this is the beginning of a series of goodbyes for george floyd. There will be another memorial in North Carolina over the weekend where he was born and all of that will be back in the houston area where he grew up on monday and tuesday. John. Omar jimenez, appreciate that. Lets turn to Miguel Marquez now. It has been ten, emotional and exhausting days in minneapolis. Why is todays Memorial Service is so important to those who are trying to organize it. Reporter this is the day and we dont know how the whole day is going to be. This is the day people were dreading and people with now starting to grapple with what has happened in the city and the effects that it had around the country and around the world. People are preparing. We are at a park thatll be filled here. This is chris davis, you are the story of minneapolis. People havestepped up to help. What are you guys doing . We are a group of hospitality employees. I wanted to donate to him to help feed the people. My work morphed into this big production, we have corporate donations and private donations and volunteers coming. We are cooking across the street. Governor walz gave us permission to be in the park here and what well be doing is serving the Peaceful Protesters and feeding the community as restaurant employees, feeding people with our love. It is how to put our hearts out there. Reporter you are being humble as well. There are a possibility of 10,000 people in the area. Because of social distancing they cant get people in there. They have as many as 10,000 in the park. You guys are set to feed a thousand people . Are you ready . We are. Reporter what has this done to minneapolis . The event and now this is coming together . So much, we are already an industry in crisis with covid. With this we have friends that have lost restaurants and we have friends that have lost businesses and their homes and for nights we live in faear and we would hear choppers and booms and sirens, and it has been devastating. Seeing the way the community has come together. There are so many places that are doing and passing out donations of food for families that cant get to Grocery Stores and dont have transportations because we dont have service. It is just it is amazing to see the way everybody has come together as a city to support each other to support the family and to just show that we love the city. And do you think the worst has passed . Is this different in situations like this before . Absolutely. The last couple of days you really can see tall the turns. I think having the National Guard come into show their support and i feel at night is not so loud anymore. You just drive down the street and you will see volunteers that came in with buckets and brooms and anything they can do to help businesses that were burnt and vandalized. That flush of anger, we know the red cross is here and other Community Groups are here to supply food for individuals that may need it and the initial flush of anger that rush through the city, it was a adrenaline in the city. That seemed to have played out. Where does minneapolis go now . How do you get beyond this real way . Thats a question i dont have an answer for. I dont know. I think that the generation underneath underneath me needs to work together. Reporter these protesters are largely young, they are fairly idealistic. I think today is hopefully another step forward. John. Miguel marquez, remarkable act of kindness. We appreciate that. Now to sara sidner, you just heard his guest where she says she does not know where it begins. Many come to the site for their own reflection, what is it like today as the city prepares for this Memorial Service . Reporter john, today is a very solemn day. The crowds are smaller and there is a sense of real calm but there is also a deep sense of sadness here. You can really tell the tone of people has changed but i will say this has been considered a sacred spot in the city. There is no destruction here. There has only been, yes, there were cries of anger and cries of protest but here is saved as a sacred spot and they made it clear that this would not be touched. This is the place where george floyd died. This is his resting place. His first resting place. And so what you see behind me is a huge and growing memorial. This is just one side of the building. On the other side which is the other side where chauvin had his knee in George Floyds neck. It is covered and there are murals and signs. There are so many people here talking about what i cant breathe means especially of the time of covid. The combination of the two is devastating. We know the autopsy report shows george floyd also had coronavirus although he was asymptomatic. So Many Americans have felt that not because of the Police Officer but because of that terrible virus. The sense of not being able to breathe is a sense of the Community Felt for a long time. Not being able to breathe because they felt they are pressed by officers in certain neighborhoods. I want to bring in julian hough, can you tell me what it is like to be here for you . I think when you look around you can tell that everyone here are grieving. We give our peace but looking at whats going on in america it is devastating. Right now the country is to a point s other people have bee killed by Police Officers, you see different skin colors and not just black, asians, americans, whites and hispanics, we enough is enough. Today is one of the most historical day that we have for the memorial and i am so happy to be here and let my voice go on and let people know that we are tired and fed up. Our skin color does not justify us being killed. God gave it to us. Is it hard to love people for who they are . We should be able to call on the Police Officer and they should come to our rescue . What will we tell our kids tomorrow . It is heartbreaking and it is so, so sad. Reporter when you came to this country, did you have a sense of that tension was there and coming from where you have been of a difficult place. Did you have a sense of what did you think of america when you saw that relationship between black people and police . I never thought for once that what we went through siberia. We saw the civil war in siberia and we thought it would not be repeated. We came here in a sense of rescue and people can rescue us and telling our family members we are safe and we dont have to worry. But coming to this situation is all over, new york, new jersey and it is not just about us coming to this place, it is us accepting this. We are immigrants and i came legally, we work hard. I think the police should be there to answer the same questio questions, how are you feeling . Whats happening . It is not taking a person and kneeling on his neck for so many minutes. Imagine the pain for that mother and hes not a child, hes a huge man and he has someone that he calls mom. Reporter thank you so much julian. This is a big guy, hes 46 years old, george floyd and in his moment of despair, he called out mama, his mother has been dead for several years so it tells you where he was. He was in utter desperation. Sara sidner, please thank you your guest. It is time today, all of those coming together. To new york of a separate memorial for george floyd held in brooklyn. E athena jones is live for us. Reporter hi john. We are in downtown manhattan. This memorial is led by local civil rights leader and reverend kevin mccall and you will hear from terrance floyd, George Floyds brother. We could hear remarks from a series of elected officials and several of them have been invited and members of congress and new York Attorney general l latisha james. I spoke to reverend mccall of after a week of protests and all these expressions of emotions and pain and anger and fear and you have these four officers facing charges and could send them into prison for a couple of decades, is this now to enter into the healing phase. Does the memorial today mean we are entering the healing phase . The other part of the heart has to heal. Justice has to be served. Do you know how many times we have been down this road where even if you get indictments or charges, you dont get convictions. We know how difficult it has been to see members of Police Forces convicted of crimes against black men and women. Pastor is saying he plans to deliver a message of next step as well saying that we have to keep protesting and we have to keep the pressure on and we have to also talk about concrete steps that could be taken to make change beyond shouting in the streets of what kind of political change and steps could be taken. Hes planning to get that across today, john. Athena jones, thank you ver much. Next we remember george floyd. Joining us now is the houston mayor. Thank you so much for joining us today. There will be a service in minneapolis and mr. Floyd will have a service in your city where he grew up in houston. Why is this important to you and your community . We grew up in the city of houston. We graduated from one of the high schools in the city of, jack yates high school. He played ball at jackson yates. A lot of people knew george and his family. This returning home for his final spot. We want to pay a tribute to him and uplift his family and show a lot of love to them. I am great you told those stories because it is important to remember George Floyds life as well as we try to understand the ramifications of his death. One of the ramifications have been mostly peaceful protests around the country and some violent. In terms of demand of justice for george floyd and others, we know there has been many cases where police were charged but not convicted. Accountability and trust is one of the Big Questions for all the demonstrations we have seen around the country. Here is how your chief puts it the other day. Here in houston, we in our investigation that used deadly force even when they shot someone and so i think we have to do a better job of showing the accountability that is going on. Describe your take on what the chief says we need to do a better job. What do the chief needs to do and mayors across America Needs to do across the delicate moment . You can always do better, training is critically important especially in the midst of coronavirus. There are a lot of people who lost their jobs and unemployed and dont have money to pay bills so thats a lot of stress and anxiety and Health Issues and you name it. Training is critically important when you see people on the streets to understand how to approach them and how to talk to them. Thats important. When it comes to viewing our procedures and actions and policies and making sure that we engage in best practices, thats important. When it comes to transparency, making sure that people know that we are being open and transparent with them, thats important. All of these factors together create that trust between the community and Law Enforcement and the community and you have to work at it each and everyday. No system is perfect but everyday we need to be striving to the degree of credibility and in integrity so people know what they are dealing with then. We are being serious and we are there to work with them and not ge against them. Mayor turner, appreciate your thought and best of luck of the preparations and the days ahead. Thank you, john. We look forward for a proper tribute to him. Coming up, live outside the courthouse where three men is charged with murder in the death of Ahmaud Arbery in court. Martin savidge is live for us at the courthouse. Reporter the three defendants in this case are not present in the courtroom. Much of the testimony comes from the Georgia Bureau of investigati investigation, mr. Dial. First of all, there is the 36second video that William Brian captured on his cell phone. More that shows the actual effort to chase and apprehended arbery. He was out running in that neighborhood that day. It has been revealed that travis mcmichael, much of the testimony is focused on him. Hes the man in the shotgun. Travis mcmichael admitted to authorities that he shot Ahmaud Arbery and shot him three times. There is no question, he pulled the trigger when he saw Ahmaud Arbery coming in front of the pickup truck and lastly the most controversial testimony came in the form against the gbi agent. Next hour, three Police Officers will face the judge the first time facing charges of the death of george floyd. Der derek sh der Derek Chauvin is the officer you see in the video kept his knee on georges neck for nearly nine minutes. Reporter it is going to happen behind us here shortly. As you look at this building you can see a heavy fortified government compound here. They are the members of minnesota National Guards, they are here protecting this facility. We see the National Guards around the area. In that building there will be a hearing for the three officers that were charged in in this case. We know one officer was arrested. Lets look at those charges, e wi we know Derek Chauvin with his knee on floyds neck, he was charged with seconddegree murder yesterday. Those three other officers have since been arrested and taken into custody, they were charged with aiding and abetting seconddegree murder. This case caused a lot of questions when you are talking about Police Officers, specifically there is a question of seconddegree murder and whether that officer chauvin intended to kill george floyd. Keith ellison telling abcs Good Morning America that intense is not thats not required of seconddegree murder. The requirement is intend to commit an assault and that resulted in the death of george floyd. Thats not what the element that particular charge. Reporter now the hearing is about to take place. The wheel of justice often moves very slowly. This is the first milestone we are told by officials to expect a lengthy process where nowhere near trial. We heard nothing of a plea. The first step in this case is about to take place behind us in downtown government plaza. Thank you, well continue to track the hearing. The pastor has been making peaceful protests with his congregation, the hardest part is containing his raw, emotions while sticking to his believes. Past pastor martin is with me right now. Thank you so much for joining us and what you are doing in the community. There is a Memorial Service for george floyd today. Describe your emotions and the emotions of your congregates of your friend and colleags and co brothers and sisters. One of the key demands have been charges of the other three officers, how has it been different the last few days . Thank you for having me. My own emotions are i am hopeful but i am honestly trying to temper that hope that was a great move i believe. I am holding my breath frankly until we see the charges brought necessarily. I believe we have a video of you leading one of your protests and demonstrations. You mentioned hard to keep your emotions in check. I am sure at times you would like to scream in anger and what has happened. Describe that process for you and how ucoyou contain that or channel that. I have tried to channel it through my preaching and through preaching emphatically and boldly. I spent a lot of time in prayers. I am angry and frustrated and i am annoyed but any moment that i take, i try to remember to preach passionately and tcallin people into action and especially my congregation and those around. We got 47 of people making congregation, my aim in all of this have been speak to those who populate the white evangelicals church and call them and remind them being an advocate in this issue in systematic racism and injustice is a gospel issue if you claim yourself to be a christian and not to engage in it is to actively deny what your faith calls us to do. I really been trying to challenge those predominantly white congregation to wrestle with that and understand that you got two options, frankly you admit that you are not a follower of jesus and frankly you need to reevaluate your christian believes. That brings the total to 42. 6 million jobless claims for coronavirus pandemic. The Labor Department never recorded a single week of jobless claims over 1 million. The coronavirus recession hitting hardest among africanamericans. Gina, in your article about this recently you had the phrase black workers suffering from a first fire and last hire phenomenon, explain. What we see is black workers tend to lose their jobs earlier and continue to lose jobs as the market improves for white workers. Currently everybody is losing their jobs because obviously this is a shutdown and workers are cut. The real issue is a lot of economists, black workers are less likely to hire back. And so there is as cruel cru this. Thats my word and not yours. You are looking at some of the statistics in your piece of april 2020, a lot of people think those numbers are higher for everybody and well get a better sense tomorrow, white 14 and black 17 and hispanic 19 . Earnings in the first quarter, 979 black americans and 725 hispanics. You have this disportionalty that existed and now it is getting worse. Yes, one of the things that makes it concerning is something we are paying attention to. Black workers already suffered along so many other dimensions. We know black workers make much less than white counter parts even of similar education and training levels. We know black workers face discrimination when hiring. And we know black workers because of immediate concerns, they areless likely to get hired. In a moment like this thats really important. The fact they have less buffer to make it through this period of low wages and however long this is happening and coming out of this coronavirus. Washington has tried to do and the fed have tried to do and congress have passed their new program created. Are they targeted to help those bei needed to most. It is difficult to target a program that you are pulling out rapidly. To get something out on the ground fast if you cant cure one individual group. This respond has been relatively good and it is fast and gotten money in peoples pockets and it is going to help them during this tough period. The question that everyone is asking is what comes next. Do these benefits last long enough and are they extended to get people out of the tough period that economists expect out of this and as jobs come back all at once. I think we just dont know the answer to that question yet. Jeanna, appreciate your insight today. Thank you very much. Thank you. Joining me now talking about the mental toll as many are facing. Dr. Patrice harris. To the point i was making with j jeannie there of kcovid19 and george floyd killed, i call it social reckoning and you have these economic numbers, talk about the cruelty of that. John, thank you for having me on and certainly covid19 and the recent assaults on black people from mr. Arbery here in georgia to mr. Taylor and mr. Floyd. This is all breathing and starting conversations that are required in this country and we see the disproportionate impact on black brown people. As you noted, health in equities were the foundations of covid19 and now we are seeing continued asousaults on these and we have covid19 affecting black and Brown Community. We have these drivers of some health in equities which includes economic inequality and Structural Racism and bias and racism and bias and of course the recent acts of violence that disproportionately affects black and brown people. I hope you are right. We have to make sure that this time we dont just have conversations about many of these issues but we really move forward and act on solutions, it is taking a toll already. We see increase stress and this is just adding to that stress. Help me with the pair dorado here. We need to show the video of the officer pinning his knee on ground on his neck. A man, a human being who was asking for a chance to breathe, he was asking for a chance to breathe. You need show that because people need to understand what happened. This is from danielle jackson, psychiatrist, she says watching things like this caused repetitive trauma. We need to show them but when we are showing them, we may be hurting people, is that right . Both things are true. That video raised so many emotions and some of my efforts and american colleagues who are mothers said they cant bring themselves to watch it. It is important that we see it because it gives record, it gives voice to the brutality that many talked about and many in the black and Brown Community shared but not everyone was able to see. It is about balance and certainly having that incident and others like it memorialized. We do have to be careful and watching it and taking it in. At any time Police Brutality is injustice, when you add it to the current stress of covid19, that again, that affects the black and Brown Community. We have to make sure we have resources and i think well have to be prepared to address those. Lets talk about covid19 at this moment. The protests understandably so have taken away some of the attention of covid19. Many states are trending in the wrong direction right now, well see if it is temporary or if there is reasons to be concerned. At least 24 of the deaths nationwide are africanamericans. 75 here in washington, d. C. 49 of the deaths where you are in georgia, 46 of the deaths in alabama. Deaths in the Africanamerican Community far out the percentage o f the general population. We talked about it before and i know there will be years of studies about this. At this moment, is the situation now better now that everyone is w aware of this portionalty to make as we go months later. Will the number gets better and Pay Attention to . I hope we dont have years of study. Of course we talk a lot about science and data. What we have to commit to do is aking on that data. We do not need many more years of studying. At the ama, we plan to lead on that conversation. It really is about acting on what we already know to be in evidence and thats what we will continue to do. I know a lot of people appreciate that but it is also increase incidents of diabetes and high Blood Pressure that are caused by stress and trauma and again as you note that is not only the direct experience from trauma but witnessing trauma. We have to have some balance and record these incidents as you note. We also have to balance to do whatever we can to mitigate the longterm effects. Well be doing that on our end at the ama and the physician community. We need to make a point and other things people try to move on and give us a shoutout. Thank you dr. Harris so much. Thank you, appreciate it. The attorney general bill barr is speaking out moments ago about the protests around the country and about his take on that video showing the death of george floyd. Our senior justice correspondent, evan perez. Whats going on . Thats right, people right lane trying to take advantage of the protests over George Floyds death. Hes talking about the conduct of Police Officers. Thats unusual for him and you never hear him talking about some of the wrongs that people have been pointing out by police in many of these instances not becoming sort of famous and for the wrong reasons. George floyd is on everyones mind. He addressed floyds death during this press conference. Take a listen to what he had to say. The video of the Police Conduct in this episode as i said before is harrowing. When you watch it, and imagine one of your own loved ones being treated this way, and begging for their lives, it is impossible for any normal human being not to be struck struck t heart with horror. This manner is being pursued by the state and the federal government. The president directed me to spare no effort. That effort is being led by the fbi as well as prosecutors in minneapolis. Theyre working on an investigation against these Police Officers as bill barr pointed out that the federal prosecutors tend to wait for the state officials to do their jobs and state and prosecutors to do their job because they dont want to fear in that process. Theyll let that process play out before you see any charges if there is any from the Justice Department but you know for me, to hear the attorney talking about this Police Conduct. This is something we heard in the Previous Administration and it has been the emphasized in the current administration. They wanted to focus more on the law and order from the other side and not necessary ily from the conduct of Police Officers which clearly is part of the story here and part of the problem. It is very much. Those are welcome words. We suggest to follow up on that. Evan, as you know the attorney general has been a driving force using Police Tactics and federal authorities here in washington, d. C. I assume thats also a subject today. Thats right. He has all the Justice Department agencies thats been deployed. We have the dea and the fbi and bureau of prisons all over the city as well as the National Guard. It is a little bit different here between what you see here and around the country, thats a focus of the attorney general. We have seen him if the last few days bouncing around from the command center here in the building. He goes across tto the agency. Hes been very much on the scene. You saw him in Lafayette Park kind of directing the clearing of the protests which now becomes the source of a lot of controversial because of the way that was done before the president s photoop. Well continue to track that coming up in minneapolis, well see you back here tomorrow. Br Brianna Keilar picks up our coverage right now. We begin the day with reflection, i am Brianna Keilar. Right now in new york, demonstrators are gathered peacefully in plaza park, theyll march across the Brooklyn Bridge the next hour. Ma in minneapolis, a memorial gets underway for floyd in an hour. A huge turnout as expected. Today is the first time the three former minneapolis Police Officers will face a judge after being charged with aiding and abetting the murder of
