Yet. New hampshire officials and voters are hoping to avoid the same outcome. Something else here is different this week, the tone of the race. Particularly how the Democratic Candidates are talking about each other. The most public battle is between former Vice President joe biden and south bend, indiana, mayor, Pete Buttigieg, who has suddenly eclipsed biden in most of the polls, going back and forth over qualification, experience, and the Biden Campaign is making digital ads as knocking buttigieg as not ready for the national stage. He was on cnn with jake tapper earlier today. Take a listen to this brand new digital ad from Vice President joe bidens campaign which was just released. Joe biden helped lead the passage of the Affordable Care act, which gave health care to 20 million people. And when park goers called on Pete Buttigieg, he installed decorative lights under bridges. Joe biden helped to negotiate the iran deal. And under threat of disappearing pets, buttigieg negotiated lighter licensing regulations on pet chip scanners. Whats your response . Well, you know, its a typical, political attack. Its too bad because so many communities, communities like mine in south bend, we know we might look small from the perspective of washington, but to us its whats going on in washington that looks so small and small minded. Communities, whether theyre my size or Rural Communities or even neighborhoods in our biggest cities that feel completely left behind are frustrated with being made into a punch line by washington politicians. After jeff zeleny pointed out that joe biden made a similar inexperience attack on barack obama, he made the reply, quote, this guy is not a barack obama. What do you think of that . Hes right. Im not. Neither is he. Neither is any of us running for president. This isnt 2008. Its 2020. We are in a new moment, calling for a different kind of leadership. To give you a feel for how much difference a year can make in this race, we first want to show you a university of New Hampshire poll from february of last year. Senator brrernie sanders was leading in the state followed by joe biden at 22 . Pete buttigieg, then mayor of south bend, relatively unknown outside of indiana polled at 1 . This was last year. Here is the cnn New Hampshire tracking poll released just this morning, sanders at 28 but buttigieg has soared to 21 and biden has slipped to 12 , indicating momentum in New Hampshire is with the former south bend mayor and not with the former Vice President. Joining us from New Hampshire now, jessica dean. Youre on the ground with the Biden Campaign. Weve seen a much more aggressive tone coming from the former Vice President , especially toward buttigieg. Is that continuing today . Reporter well, its been interesting, ana. He is in the middle of a town hall event right now, talking to voters, taking their questions. He was talking about paerlt unity and bringing together democrats. We have not here, at this event, heard him taking those hits, that Bernie Sanders. You played that ad, jake tapper asking Pete Buttigieg about that earlier. We did hear the president talk a little bit about it earlier today. Take a listen to that. Ic congratulate pete. I congratulate bernie. They did a great job and were better organized, organized more than we were in iowa. I view from the begin ining, ani mean this, you have to take the first four as one. Two primaries and two caucuses backtoback basically. Not a Single Person has won without overwhelming support from the black community, overwhelming, overwhelming. Okay . And what joe biden and his campaign has said over and over again is that he is the candidate that has overwhelming support from black voters. Thats whats beared out in polls so far, looking to nevada, South Carolina, when a more diverse population is voting in the nominating process. The reason weve seen this shift in his tone is look, his campaign always said we dont have to win iowa and New Hampshire to get to nevada, South Carolina, super tuesday, where they think they are primed to do very well. What they didnt want to see is exactly whats bearing out in these polls, which is Pete Buttigieg on the rise and above the Vice President. Thus the sharpening of attacks yesterday. Its been more about party unity and issues at this particular town hall so far. Okay. What are you hearing from voters in New Hampshire about the importance of their primary, especially after the can aous in iowa . Well, its interesting. I was talking to voters before this started, getting a feel for it. One woman has said she has lived here in New Hampshire, first time she has participated in this process, come to see candidates because shes been influenced by donald trump, that she has had enough of his policy, shes getting involved. Theres certainly a prevading feeling, that all eyes are on them. They say this primary will go much more smoothly than last week. Thank you very much. Well check back in. In the interest of transparency, governor granholm helped prepare joe biden for the early debates in this 2020 race. How unprecedented in sth moment right now . No other candidate has finished worse than second in New Hampshire and gone on to win the nomination. But were in an unprecedented race. No other candidate has skipped the first four contests and gone on to win wirks is what Michael Bloomberg is trying to do. 11 candidates right now. Are all bets out the window . Yeah. I totally think youre completely right. In normal times, we would say past is prolog, right . I think we should throw all of that out. I think its clear in New Hampshire, Bernie Sanders should win. Those polls i dont even trust polls anymore. He is the senator of a neighboring state. I do think that it is true that we are in a weird time because the president is such an abb aberration. You dont see normally a president s Approval Rating pretty much even yet the direction of the country is 17 points under water. People hate the direction of the country. Yet youve got an Approval Rating because the economy is doing well. We have a singularly, frankly, horrible behaving president and that, i think that weird anomaly is spilling into the democratic primary, because people so want to beat him that they are just not sure who is going to be in the best position. Let me say one other thing. Okay, go ahead. I didnt mean to interrupt you. I was going to say for the longest team it seemed like Vice President biden was trying to present him as the polar opposite as far as character, compared to President Trump, and was staying away from attacking opponents because thats such a trump hblike thing to do. This weekend has been different. We showed that ad at the top of the show. When Pete Buttigieg was asked about it, he responded by saying what i did as mayor may seem small to washington folks, but it mattered to people in my community. Dont make us a punch line. What do you think about the message in that attack ad . Smart strategy or could it back fire . Always tricky, right . Primary voters could not want to see democrats attacking one another. The biden team, Vice President being belittled. He feels this is a response to that. Bottom line, if people do want to see a fighter. They just dont want people to knock out other democrats. They want to see that fight against donald trump. I do know that there is something to the notion that we are in the very beginning of this. If only 2 of the delegates will be chosen after New Hampshire. If you think about it, a marathon is 26 miles. That is like twotenths of one mile of a marathon. Remember bill clinton only won one of the first 11 contests. Its a great moment tore democracy. Although i do know the longer it takes for us to center on a candidate the better it will be for the republicans. I hope we start to see that narrowing after super tuesday. It has been a rough start. We still dont even have the official results from the mess that was the Iowa Caucuses. Yes. National cochair for the Bernie Sanders campaign, nina turner, is claiming what happened with the vote count in iowa looks, quote, fairly intentional. Senator sanders was also asked about this. Lets listen. He do you think the Democratic Party is trying to openly hurt your campaign . Look, all i can say about iowa is it was an embarrassment. It was a disgrace to the good people of iowa, who take their responsibilities in the caucuses very seriously. They screwed up badly. Do you think the Democratic Party, whether the iowa Democratic Party or the dnc was trying to hurt you, though . I have no idea. Well monitor the situation closely. Thats not my impression at this point. Were taking on corporate america, trump and the establishment and many people in the democratic establishment who are, to say the least, excited about Bernie Sanders. Aye not casting political dispersions. What do you see as the broader impact of the way 2020 has begun, include iing. Bernie sanders is not casting aspersions on it. If the Democratic Party, whatever that means, because bernie is being elected by a bunch of people who are part of the Democratic Party f they were trying to somehow manipulate the election so bernie wouldnt come out on top, they surely didnt do a good job of it, because he came out on top, at least the top two. I think he will come out on top in New Hampshire. The outcomes of these elections, that theres conspiracy underneath t yes, there may be incompetence but its not a conspiracy. To your bigger point, we need to get rid of caucuses and have primaries. The first four states right now, this should be on the same day. We should have nevada, South Carolina, New Hampshire and iowa on the same day, all primaries. You heard the president mocking democrats for what happened in iowa. Well, whatever. Hes going to do that. Hold your thought. I want to play what he said. They cant take a simple tabulation, yet they want to tell you how to run health care. Think of all the money they spent and they have no idea who won. No idea. No idea who won is not true because again we know more or less but this morning Dnc Tom Perez was asked if he considered resigning. Many people said you are the king of the dnc. How do you not claim responsibility for what happened in iowa . He said no, he had not considered resigning. Do you believe he should resign . Absolutely not. I think people are trying to scapegoat him. He has raised money for parties, completely redone how super delegates are impacting the nominee. He has done an amazing job. People ought to knock it off, quit putting him in the middle of a circular firing squad and realize a, its been a hard job and he has tried to be fair about it. Youre just going to knock somebody out in the middle without an idea of who its ridiculous. Everybody needs to calm down. Everybody needs to focus on New Hampshire and the next four astates and super tuesday and well go forward and have a nominee. Billionaire Michael Bloomb g bloomberg, who is not competing in New Hampshire, has crossed the 350 million mark for ad spending. Hes hiring like crazy, with more than 2,000 staff and 125 Campaign Offices around the country. What kind of a force does that make him . Put this into perspective for us. Again, this is ahistorical. That is so many people. He is scooping up all the talent of the people who have left these other campaigns and paying really with well for all of them. So i dont think anybody can rule him out. I think his strategy of sort of swooping over the top and landing into super tuesday in a favorable spot is probably ingenious. And i also think that i mean if, for whatever reason, this whittles out more quickly, especially that moderate lane, then Michael Bloomberg could come in and people feel like weve got somebody who can beat trump. I dont know. I think its a wild strategy. Democrats dont like nominating billionaires but i do think in the end, he may end up having a good super tuesday. He will also be on the debate stage in nevada. That will be interesting. Democrats dont like nominating billionaires, there havent been any other billionaires before President Trump that ran before this election. Now we have three of them. Ana, can i say one other thing . Sure. Theres sort of a dark horse i dont mean to be using that metaphor about duval patrick, but the governor of massachusetts, obviously, and campaigning in New Hampshire. They know him. If he gets one delegate, just one delegate he, too, could be on the las vegas debate stage. And he is a singularly talented person. I just do not think this is over yet. And i dont think anybody who is writing people off should continue to do so. Lets see what happens and how it plays out in the whole month of february. Okay, buckle up. Weve got so much time left anything could happen. Buckle up, yeah. Thank you, governor granholm. hey there im lonnie from lonnies lumber. If you need lumber wood, lonnies is better than good. New details today about an attack in afghanistan that killed two u. S. Soldiers. The attack happening in the eastern part of afghanistan. Defense officials tell cnn that the u. S. Soldiers killed were special forces, Sergeant First ClassJavier Gutierrez and Antonio Rodriguez of mexico, both were 28 years old. John kirby joins joins us now. We conduct partnered operations. Some of them are advise and assist capacity where were simply helping Afghan NationalSecurity Forces do their jobs. Others are more in a counterterrorism position. I dont know exactly what this mission was. Clearly it was partnered, most likely because these are special forces soldiers, it was probably in the counterterrorism realm but we just wont know until the army is able to provide us a little more detail. These are common. A part and parcel of why were in afghanistan, to help Afghan NationalSecurity Forces learn how to defend their own people and their own country a little bit better. Theyve not determined whether this attack was carried out by an afghan soldier or by someone wearing a military uniform. If this gunman was an afghan soldier, what kind of implications could there be . Well, theyre going to have to look at force Protection Measures across these partnered operations, probably look at vetting and how these soldiers get chosen for these kinds of operations. Ana, this could be everything from the extreme version of a talibaninspired, precoordinated attack to maybe just a dispute that turned violent, unfortunately, and maybe even the american soldiers werent even the target of this soldier as he started to shoot. We just dont know right now. I dont think that depending on what they learned, i dont think there will be a huge impact on the idea of partnered operations or the mission at large. The Strategic Mission to prepare afghan Security Forces to do a better job defending their country. But there could be tactical considerations that have to be taken into effect, going forward. Depending what they learn here will matter a lot on what the motive was. Rear admiral john kirby. Appreciate it. You bet. Thank you. Were back in a moment.
