Less than 60 days to go, and the race for the white house is as heated as ever. Im poppy harlow. Year watching cnn. Hillary clinton is donald trump are Trading Barbs over comments the democratic nominee made in new york last night. Somehow shes apologizing what she said, and trump is retweeting president obama, thats right, retweeting president obama, to make his point against clinton. Lets see what clinton said about some Trump Supporters last night. You know, to be grossly
generalistic, you could put half of trumps supporters into what i call the basket of deplorables. Right . [ applause ] the racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, islamophobic, you name it. But that other basket of people are people who feel that government has let them down. The economy has let them down. Nobody cares about them. Nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures. And theyre just desperate for change. Clinton quickly took heat for grouping millions of americans into that socalled basket. Donald trump himself tweeting, quoth, wow, Hillary Clinton was so insulting to my supporters, millions of amazing hardworking people. I think it will cost her at the polls. Clinton saying in a statement tonight, last night i was grossly generalistic and thats
never a good idea. I regret saying half, that was wrong. She goes on to say, quote, its deplorable that trump has built a campaign largely on prejudice and paranoia and given a National Platform to fringe bigots with a dozen followers and spreading their message to 11 million people. Trump said, isnt it disgraceful that instead of owning up to this grotesque attack on american voters, she tries to turn it around with a pathetic rehash of the words shes used in her failing campaign . With me now, Conservative Political Commentator ben ferguson, a donald trump supporter. And simone sanders, former National Press secretary for senator Bernie Sanderss president ial campaign. So glad youre with us. Let me begin with you, simone. Clintons team telling cnn that
she apologized so quickly for saying half of his supporters feel that way because she felt like she couldnt move forward on the crux of her argument without getting that controversy out of the way, and the crux of that argument is if she Still Believes donald trump is running a racist campaign. So my question to you is, given that, and i know youre no trump supporter, how significant of a group of Trump Supporters do you believe are, quote, racist, sexist, homophobic, islamophobic . Great question, poppy. She was indeed wrong to say that half of trumps supporters were in the basket of, quote unquote, deplorables. But we should be clear, there is a segment that supports Donald Trumps campaign that do subscribe to xenophobic, racist, sexist, et cetera, views. How large do you think that is . I think there are three
baskets of Trump Supporters, three segments. I dont think its a large portion, but a smaller portion. I think there are, quote unquote, basket of deplorables. But there are also hardworking americans who feel like theyve been locked out of opportunity. I think thats a larger segment, the largest segment. I also think there are individuals who are White Working Class folks, some people who have been voting against their own interests for years with the republican party, people that used to be democrats, and now are standing up and saying, hmm, i like some of the things donald trump is saying, i dont agree with some of his more divisive and racist and inflammatory rhetoric but i do like some of the things hes saying because i want someone to speak to me. That gets to folks talking about the issues. Thats interesting, you say this group of racist, sexist, et cetera, is the smallest of the three groups. Ben, i know that while you support the republican candidate now, you were very reluctant to
support donald trump throughout the primary process. Sure. I wonder now, stepping back, was one of the reasons that you held off so long on supporting trump due to concern you had over where some of his support was coming from . Not so much where his support was coming from but more his choice of the way he described and explained things when i thought sometimes he crossed the line. But lets be clear here. Hillary clinton, she did not make a mistake. This is exactly what she believes about the republican party. And this is what i find so intriguing about this, is the fact that democrats have been using this for years. They say theyre the party of acceptance and tolerance but theyre completely intolerant of anyone elses views that are against theirs. If you disagree with them they put you in this basket of hell, that youre homophobic or bigoted or their favorite word, youre a racist. So i dont think people should be surprised by this. What i think was incredibly stupid for her to do is she has fired up many people that maybe
werent excited about donald trump so much that might have stayed home if it was a rainy day, and now they know that Hillary Clinton says that if youre a conservative, youre in this basket of hell, and youre a racist, a bigot, a homophobic person, and im going to tell you thats what you are. And its going to backfire. This is a stupid move by this woman. Its interesting, simone, he says its not a mistake. Lets be clear, this isnt the first time she said it, she actually said it a week ago on israel television. He has a point, do you believe clinton thinks it is a true mistake or is she responding quickly to the backlash . I definitely think she thinks its a mistake, heres why, a number of prominent republicans in the party have come out and thrown their support behind Hillary Clinton because they know donald trump is a disaster who is not representative of the republican party. They know theres too much at
stake in this election to put the party over the country. Secretary clinton is not the person who has been spewing divisive and inflammatory rhetoric. To a point that was made, i think its interesting shes been i think its interesting that republicans like to say that, you know, democrats always bring up the r word, racism. As an africanamerican woman, i dont play with the word racist. Donald trump has been fueling this rhetoric and we have to call it what it is. So is she talking is she coming off as elitist, is she talking down to millions of americans who supported and voted for donald trump in the primary . Lets push aside saying half, even her camp say she shouldnt have used that broad brush. But here is how mike pence put it and i wonder if you agree in part even as a clinton supporter. Hillary, ive got news for you. Ive got news for you. Im traveling across this country every day. Im meeting the Men And Women Who Support Donald Trump in big cities and small towns. The people who represent the millions of people who support my running mate. Theyre good, hard working americans. Theyre Factory Workers and cole miners. Their farmers and business owners. Theyre Law Enforcement officers and veterans. Theyre students and theyre seniors. Theyre moms and theyre dads. Theyre people who believe in freedom and in the god given liberties enshrined in our constitution. Hillary, they arent a basket of anything. They are americans. And they all deserve your support. Simone, your reaction to that. Do you believe that hes playing at, frankly, part of what Bernie Sanders went against Hillary Clinton on in the primary, being sort of, you know, in with wall street, in with the socalled elites . I will say that governor
pences comments were very convincing. I would also say that Trump Supporters and millions of hard working people across this country that are taking a hard look at donald trump, they are looking for real change. Once we peel back the layers of mr. Trump, thats not real change. Secretary clinton has painted more of a picture. Do these comments hurt her . Clearly, yes. Its still in the news cycle, were still talking about tit, well be talking about it tomorrow. Will this turn off millions of people and cause them to go to the polls to support donald trump because of this one comment . I dont think so, because the issues, poppy, are extremely important. People in places like iowa, nebraska, the midwest where im from, they want to know what youre actually going to do to improve their lives. This is not getting past the rhetoric. This is the reality of what Hillary Clinton actually thinks about 50 of the people that are voting in this country. And if youre watching this, maybe youre not one that really
focuses on politics very often. The question you now have to ask yourself is, if this is what she thinks of me if i stand up for certain values that she disagrees with that she obviously is going to look at me as the lowest form of human being in this country and insult me in this way, shes not going to represent me if shes the president , shes not going to listen to my ideas if shes the president. Now you have a real problem for her. The cat is out of the bag. This is what she thinks of people that are moderate or conservative. And she is not going to ever represent you if she tells you the truth of what she thinks about you now. When shes president , you will not have her ear, because she thinks youre a racist, bigot, or homophohomophone. Donald trump has stood up time after time and disparaged africanamericans, gold star families, muslims, latinos,
hispanics. Donald trump has said those things over and over again. When youre asking africanamericans and latinos for their vote, the same goes for donald trump. People across this country expect donald trump to hold their interests at the highest level. I dont think so. Ben ferguson, thank you very much. Simone sanders, thank you. Simone is with me on the other side of this break. We have a lot ahead to cover. Hillary clinton counting on black voters to help propel her to the white house. The polling shows she may be coming up short with one key group of africanamerican voters. Ahead, what she needs to do to get the support she needs. Its one thing to call your rival deplorable in a president ial race. Attacking the supporters of your opponent takes things to a new level. But what about young black voters, the millennials . Clinton needs their support in droves like president obama did. Is there an Enthusiasm Gap when it comes to her campaign . In 2008, barack obama won 95 of young africanamerican voters. Clintons numbers right now are just as not as strong as that group. A recent poll shows that africanamerican voters age 18 to 30 support her just 57 . So a lot of ground to make up. Thats much better than trumps 2 . But is there an Enthusiasm Gap . Back to talk to me is simone sande sande sanders. You said clinton needs to modernize her outreach toblack millennials. Weve got 59 days to go. How does she do that . She does it by putting together a team but also by doing some avant garde things that are unusual. I think its democrats as a whole. This election has implications for democrats up and down the ticket, not just the president ial election, but statehouses, governors races, senate races, and the house of representatives. All democrats have to be intentional about engaging millennials as a whole but especially africanamerican millennials. Shes nowhere where obama was in 2008 and 2012. Senator sanders had broad
millennial support, right, in the primary. That didnt push him Over The Edge to win. How important is it for clinton, is it critical for her . I think its definitely critical. Heres why. When you talk about the Obama Coalition, the Obama Coalition was, yes, africanamerican women, latinos. But it was really young people. And there are compounded efforts to reach out to young white women in this election, not just from the campaign but compounded efforts for all folks. Thats compounded efforts for latinos, for africanamerican women. We have to make sure theres compounded efforts for young people. People in college, young professionals. How much do you think the past is hurting her . So the 94 crime bill that her husband signed into law that she supported for mandatory Life Sentences for three strikes. Now they both say parts of this were a mistake. She used the term super
predator, when talking about atrisk youth, thats come back to haunt her. How much of that is hurting her among young voters right now . Thats definitely a bit of a factor there. But i think what its really about is speaking to young voters, particularly young voters of color, about the issues and why Hillary Clinton is the best person on their issues. I know theres a we were just on the last segment talking about donald trump and Hillary Clinton and what were saying to each other back and forth. But young voters want to know what your plan is for the economy. They want to know what your plan is for criminal justice reform, for climate change, so on and so forth. And were not having those conversations, if its not extremely clear to young voters, thats when you have, oh, ill just stay home. Young people have to come out in droves and vote because our issues will be front and center in this election, 2017, 2018, 2020 again. In this campaign, theyre making
some inroads but everybody across the spectrum has to kick it up a notch. Both trump and clinton tend to have unfavorables and that leads to people saying im going to sit them out. Neither can afford that. Simone sanders, thank you, we appreciate it. How a company that lost more employees on 9 11 than any other found purpose in that loss.
