Around the sunshine state. When you look at the statewide positivity rate, its 18 . Just yesterday, nearly 9,000 new coronavirus cases were reported and 120 deaths. That was a record. That is 120 families who this morning are mourning the loss of their loved ones. Governor ron desantis yesterday acknowledging that theres a lag, a delay in testing. To fix the problem he says next week well start seeing designated lanes for symptomatic people. Take a listen. Youre seeing turnaround time, its taking a lot longer. Tests get back, theyre going every which way. Were going to start having dedicated lanes for symptomatic people and contract with the people who do the selfswab, send it in and then get a quicker turnaround time. Reporter and poppy, on schools, he said that if fast food and walmart and home depot are essential, then education are essential. You and i have been reporting on this, poppy. The state of florida requiring schools to open up this fall for inperson instruction. Poppy . Yep. He is not backing down from that. Thats very clear. Rosa, thank you for your reporting for us this morning. You just heard how dire it is in south florida. The president just left the white house. Hes traveling to that area right now. On this trip, hes hosting a fundraising event an hour north of miami. Were joined with more. What else will he be doing there . Well, lets see. Hes got go down there and do a fundraiser. Thats the one thing we didnt know too much about until more recently. Hes also got a visit to ft. Lauderdale. And as a matter of fact, hes going to Southern Command to talk about drug interdiction and a roundtable with venezuelan dissidents, which is an outreach to the hispanic vote in southern florida, which is very important for the president s reelection bid. So these are the things the president is doing. The problem with this is that a lot of people say the timing is really bad. Its bad because of the situation with the Health Care Community in south florida. Whenever a president travels to a place like this, the Health Care Community gets dragged into the contingency plans and, of course, this is not ea time to drag them into the contingency plans because of the surging situation with coronavirus. Back to you, poppy. Okay. Joe jons thank you. Moments ago that is the president getting off of marine one and heading down to florida. Hospitals in texas are in crisis mode right now. Ed lavendera joins us in dallas. The crisis not even the worst of it if you ask the governor, greg abbott. Reporter right. Well get to that in a second here. The statement thats coming from Governor Greg Abbott here in texas is quite a change from the tone weve heard here in this state for the last few months. As you mentioned, hospitals feeling the punch. We reported earlier this week of military medical teams being brought in to help hospitals in san antonio. Here in dallas, the largest public hospital, parkland, has federal disaster medical teams being brought in to assist with the overwhelmed staff in the hospital here. This as city officials and local officials across the state in many areas have been warning that hospital beds space and icu bed space will become an issue over the course of the next few weeks. Yesterday here in texas, Health Officials reported the deaths of 105 people. Its a record singleday high. The first time that the fatality number topped the 100 mark since this pandemic started. In the course of the last three days, nearly 30,000 new coronavirus cases have been reported. Listen to the way the governor is talking about what we could see next week. I think the numbers are going to look worse as we go into next week. We need to make sure theres plenty of hospital beds in the houston area. Reporter this is a governor battling from every side here in texas. Conservatives arguing that the governor has gone too far in terms of mask mandate, you have the big city leaders across the state saying that he hasnt done enough. It is a wide range of opinions and intense thoughts about how all of this should unfold, which adds to the confusion, i think, probably as we reported in many circles. Because here the numbers just continue to suggest a very dire situation in virtually every corner of this state. Poppy . Very dire. Ed, thanks a lot. Also on top of the shocking numbers in florida and texas, just startling numbers out of arizona where this morning, 33 , one in three, covid19 test rs coming back with positive results. Thats according to the covid tracking project. There are fewer than 150 icu beds available across the entire state. Listen to how one icu nurse there describes what shes facing to my colleague, crisco mow. Were stretched so thin, were compromising patient safety. Were working with ventilators left with we have triple patient assignments now. We have three covid icus that are completely full. Lets bring in wendy smith reeves. Shes the former director of the Arizona Department of emergency management. Thank you for being here. I can only imagine being a resident, being someone who served dealing with all of this what is must feel like for you when you look at these numbers. Why did this happen . We lost our audio. Should we take a break . All right. Well take one more check. Wendy, can you hear me . Okay. Were going to take a quick break. We will try to get back to her. Also joining us ahead, the governor of ohio talking about the situation in his state getting worse. And masks are mandatory in 12 counties. Will he make it mandatory statewide . Thats ahead for us this hour. Also, why one vaccine maker thinks it will take a decade before the worlds population gets immunity from coronavirus. While schools struggle to get a clear answer on how to reopen safely, the president is again threatening to pull funding from schools that dont reopen physically this fall. Come on in, were open. All we do is hand you the bag. Simple. Done. We adapt and we change. You know, you just figure it out. Weve just been finding a way to keep on pushing. If you cant afford your medicine, abbvie may be able to help. Okay. We can hear her now. Lets bring back the former director of the Arizona Department of emergency management. Thank you for being here. I was asking you before the braeng, as someone who dedicated so much of her life, one of three tests coming back positive in the state of arizona, whats it like for you . Its scary to watch the numbers continue to rise. Thats for sure. For your previous question, how did we get here, i think some have said we went to the stayathome order too late and we reemerged too early, especially right before a holiday weekend. You see the images in arizona where you see a lot of crowded bars and nightclubs and you know just these large congregate settings that are people are placing themselves in and then come to find that they had contracted the virus just within days. Okay. When you talk about lessons learned, right, its one thing to look back and i get that we cant change the past, but we can change the future for the people of arizona. The governor did something that should help. That is reducing inperson dining to 50 . What else needs to be done . Theres no statewide mask mandate in arizona. Should there be . Right. He did finally give that authority back to the local jurisdictions. Yeah. To make the decisions for their communities. There is a lot of encouragement for masking even for the communities that do not have an order in place. So reducing dining to 50 , putting that in the executive order, took it from a recommendation to a requirementrequirement. Now its enforceable. Now the activities that give you a high probability of contracting the virus and avoiding those types of activities are something that people can do. Why did you step down from your role . I felt that my role was being addressed by others in the Governors Office and i felt that my role was duplicative and it was better, i thought for the team to have just one person providing guidance. Were people listening to your recommendations, wendy . My team was doing a fantastic job on doing the best that they know to do. We execute our state Emergency Response and Recovery Plan multiple times a year. We implement it whenever there are disasters in arizona and so deviating from that standard protocol was difficult for the team and very confusing. When you hear this about schools, because i know you have kids, theyre out of school now, but so many you know as a parent how important it is to have children in school. At the same time, you know how important it is to have Healthy People in your city and your state and across the country. Listen to this from the cdc director yesterday, robert redfield. I cant not i cannot overstate how important i think it is now to get our schools reopened. The reason i push it is because i truly believe its for the Public Health benefit of these kids. Is it a greater Public Health benefit in your assessment in the state of arizona to have schools open or closed . So i think that there is benefit for having schools open, but going to those online opportunities and Remote Learning might be better for the health of the Health Care System and for the health of everyones family. So you need to take a look at what is going on within each family. So if there are coe morbid tis within the family, homeschool or Home Learning might be the also you have families with two parents that are learning, so having school there to support the child is definitely something that they require. So its an independent need. Its really based on family dynamics. Really having choice for families. Also for teachers thats important too. Wendy, thank you very much for being with me this morning. Thank you. Coronavirus cases in ohio have been on the rise. As controversy over when and how to reopen schools is growing nationwide, right . Also growing the controversy whether or not wearing a mask should be required. Ohios governor is now making those decision county by county. Its up to st. County where theyre requiring masks. Governor dewine of ohio is with us now. Thank you. Youve been a leader on this from the beginning. Everyone knows that. I want to talk about, you have 12 counties where youre mandating masks. You have level 3 or red counties in all of those counties. What about a statewide mask mandate. Are we at that point of necessity in ohio . No, i dont think we are. The message ive got from ohioans has been, if we have a problem in our county, we should deal with it. I live in a small rural county and the spread is not great. We have spread in over county and we strongly recommend everybody to that they should have a mask on. But mandating it takes it to the next level. Weve done that, as youve told our viewers with 12 of our counties. Most of them are pretty big counties. Its a lot of population in the state. The message is, look, we have a serious, serious problem in your county. Weve got growth that is going like that. We need to try to slow this thing down. So thats our message. But we hope that everyone will wear a mask out in public. You know, frankly, we dont have to have everybody. If we could get 80 of all ohioans to wear a mask, keep the social distance, well knock this thing down. We really will. Well, i hear you. But i also know people drive a long way for their jobs oftentimes or they visit their families from county to county. Why would a statewide mask mandate hurst. What would be the downside . Certainly would not hurt. We started . We had a business group, business groups, people, and helped folks who put together the jords for business going back, all the employees are Wearing Masks today in the state of ohio unless theres an exception to wear them. That Group Recommended that every customer who goes into a store should wear a mask. It was clear that they were not accepting that at all. Frankly, we had to make a judgment. What would people tolerate and do. But now, were seeing were able to get doot a by count, we can show them counties that are trending in that direction. Were undering them and putting a mandatory mask on them. Were saying hey, we got to be really careful in these counties and signaling to everybody else, were trending this way, were 1200 or so cases per day. Its going up. We have a problem and we better deal with the problem. When it comes to counties where masks are mandated, i know my colleague played this out for you. My friend and colleague Brianna Keillor did an interesting is mr. Jones. Jeff jones. I know hes your friend, governor, but heres what he said. I am not the mask police. I am not going to enforce any mask wearing. That is not my responsibility. That is not my job. People should be able to make those choices them chefs. Did you call your friend about the role of masks. No. The sheriff and i disagree on this issue. The evidence is abundantly clear. Wearing a mask is important. Social distancing and the mask. You put those together and well make a big difference. I think what the sheriff may be missing is for us to keep businesses open, for us to allow people to go to work every day, wearing a mask is going to allow this to continue in the state of ohio if we can keep this virus down. If this virus spikes up and people are scared, it isnt going to matter what i order or what i dont order as far as businesses are closing or not, people these two are tied directly together. Thats true. I want to use the remainder of our time if i could to talk about schools. Sure. You were among the first in the nation, you had five cases only, i believe, in the state of ohio, you decided to close the schools earlier than in new york city. But where is your head on opening schools in a matter of weeks . Are ohio schools ready to be opened and if they are, will teachers be mandated to be there in person or risk losing their jobs . With over 630 School Districts in the state of ohio, in ohio were very local control of education. So ive asked the school boards, the teachers to put a plan together for each one of their districts. And they have alternative if things start getting bad, if theres an uptick, its up to them. I would love to see every kid back in school, in the classroom. You saw last week when the American Academy of pediatrics came out with what they said. Theres a downside to kids not going to school too. You got to balance these things. We do. Im a parent who wants my kids in school. But i want their teachers to be safe and healthy. What im trying to get at is, parents are going to have a choice. They can send their kids to cool or not. But do teachers have that choice. To make that choice for a teacher in the state. Listen to this one. We are in old school buildings. We are in the foothills appalachia. We have no air conditioning. It will make it impossible in the fall to wear face kofgs in the heat. Theyre small rooms with kids coming in off of buses. Theyre on buses for 45 minutes because of the routes. I dont see how the children can have social distance from each other. It just doesnt seem reasonable, the requirements that the governor has set out for us. Will karen lose her job if she doesnt go teach . Well, i understand where shes coming from. You know, every school is different. Were allowing, as we always have in ohio, schools to try to sort this out. Weve given them some very strong guidelines. Weve said that every employee at school needs to wear a mask. Weve said we highly recommend that every student from third grade up wear a mask and weve also said that many schools will require kids in kindergarten to wear a mask. Theres a particularly challenge as we pointed out with people on buses when kids are riding buses, and that theyve got to be particularly careful. So, look, theres no one answer to this. Part of what i continue to say to ohioans. I said yesterday. What we do in the fall whether well be able to go back to school in football. Whatever you like to do in the fall is going to depend to a great extent what we do in the next 30 days. Weve got to slow this spread down. If we dont slow this spread down, its just not good. Its not good and weve got to get control. But we have it within our power. Social distancing, the mask, we have this collectively in our power. If we get 80 of ohioans to do this, it will make a big difference. What are you willing to sacrifice in the shortterm for the longterm gains of everyone. Youre right. Governor good luck. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. It surged in the weeks after memorial day. Are we going to see the same thing . Dr. Sanjay gupta joins me next on it. To help manage blood sugar levels.
