Now theyre telling us 806 people have died after the quake struck an area near the capital, kathmandu. There have been at least 15 aftershocks of 4. 5 magnitude or greater and the tremors were felt as far away as new delhi in neighboring india. And lets bring in cnns Indian Bureau chief raffi. We know youre in calcutta. The important thing now is to try to find those injured and get some support to these, these areas. But thats proven to be quite difficult. Yeah. It is proving to be difficult. On the one hand you have the massive earthquake the epicenter of which is 50 miles to the northwest in kathmandu. So in those parts of nepal, rural parts, weve heard reports of avalanches on Mount Everest. On the one hand you have a different type of rescue operation there and on the streets of kathmandu were seeing all of these images of broken buildings, people out on the street. Hospitals overflowing. Very different challenge there. So its an urban challenge and a rural challenge. And between you know amidst all of this it is now nightfall in kathmandu. Weve heard that its raining there. Its going to get cold and difficult to find people. And ravi a couple of things. What kind of power situation is there . There has to be huge interruptions of power and talk about the outlying areas. Is there any gauge as to how far away from the city this destruction is going to hit . Well yes, i mean as you say, there is no electricity in large part of kathmandu, many parts of nepal, water is a problem, even though its raining. And amidst all of that the hospitals arent equipped to deal with the sheer numbers of people who are coming in. Weve heard from our people on the ground. One of our journalists in kathmandu was injured. He went to hospital and he was turned away because well there were people who were far more severely injured. Who needed help first. And so in the coming hours were going to hear that the death toll will keep rising the number of injured will keep rising it really is just an incredibly tragic story today in nepal. This is the worst earthquake that theyve seen since the 1930s and it gives awe bit of context about this part of the world. Im in calcutta in india. And not too far away from nepal. And in this part of the world, you have cities that are very densely populated. Buildings tend to be built very close to each other. You know so when there is a big Natural Disaster like an earthquake places like this places like kathmandu are more likely to be badly impacted than places in say rural united states. Or europe. Thank you so much for bringing us the latest there from kathmandu and from the region. Were going to obviously continue to monitor this as its a developing situation and well keep you posted throughout the day. Back in the u. S. Now, in just a few hours, protesters will fill the streets of baltimore, demanding answers and justice, vowing to shut down the city their words, over the death of freddie gray. The new demonstrations are coming on the heels of Police Officials conceding that they made mistakes. And they spoke about those mistakes. Listen. We know he was not buckled in the transportation wagon as he should have been. No excuses for that period. We know our Police Employees failed to get him medical attention in a timely manner multiple times. Want to bring in joe johns. Joe, are you getting any indication that the fact that police came out and are admitting to problems and to mistakes that they made is that making any sort of a difference in the vibe in the feel that you have there on the streets . I mean theres a feeling that the investigation is progressing. There are many here who have been protesting who have said in their view its not moving fast enough. There are a lot of people who knew something had happened. They didnt know what. And they wanted the police to move as quickly as possible. There have been calls for example, the commissioner of police to step down. And people still dont know exactly what happened. So theres, theres tension here theres a sense of dissatisfaction. But at the same time i think people in the middle are still waiting to hear what the police are going to say next friday. After this investigation is supposedly wrapped up, christi. Joe, lets talk about the protests that are planned for today. Expected to be so much larger than the protests weve seen over the last week or so. What do we know about whats going to happen today . And are the mayor and Police Concerned about what will happen today . There is that undercurrent of thousands of people coming out. But if you talk to the organizers they dont know exactly what to expect. I spoke to malik shabas a longtime organizer activist in the washington, d. C. Area. He leads black lawyers for justice, organizing the big protest today. He doesnt know what to expect. The police have stepped up their presence on the streets already here in baltimore. In anticipation of that. Theres some concern that there might be chaos in the streets or an attempt to shut baltimore down. But the fact of the matter is all of the protests have been peaceful victor throughout the week for the most part a few scattered sporadic incidents. And most people are expecting things to remain peaceful here. Of course we will cover those protests as they happen throughout the day and continue to follow the search for answers in freddie grays death. Joe johns in baltimore. Thanks. We need to point out the protesters arent the only ones demanding answers about what exactly happened to freddie gray on april 12th. So is the citys mayor. Look at this. I still want to know why the policies and the procedures for transport were not followed. I still want to know why none of the officers called for immediate medical assistance despite mr. Grays apparent pleas. The one thing we all know is that because of this incident a mother has to bury her child. She doesnt even know exactly how or why this tragedy occurs. Only that this occurred while her child was in our custody. In police custody. And this is unacceptable. Want to dig deeper into this with maryland house of delegates majority whip keith haynes, thank you for being with us. We didnt get a lot of answers, i think a lot of people yesterday. But obviously the police did, the Police Commissioner did admit that his officers made mistakes. Do you think that you are or that the Police Station is there on track and the investigators are on track to satisfy people with the information that theyre going to have thats forthcoming . Well i think one of the Big Questions has always been since the death of mr. Gray last sunday whether or not information has been forthcoming to provide answers to the public and to the community swiftly enough. And i think the probably the Police Commissioners comments yesterday aided in helping to provide some answers to the community. Although let me be very clear, that from my perspective, that those comments are really confirm what the community and people here in the city have expressed all along that in medical attention should have been given initially. He was screaming for medical attention at that point and probably should have been called in. That confirms what people have already suggested. And one of the things that i, i think theres anticipation on is whats going to happen on friday when the investigation is then transferred over to the states attorneys office. Were talking about what anthony, commissioner batts was talking about, freddie gray didnt get timely medical care. And he also wasnt buckled into a seat belt during the transport, saying there was no excuse for that. How confident are you that were going to find out what happened in that van . Well let me say that i do know that there are several investigations that are going on. Think there are at least four. That are ongoing. Its going to be crucial i think, to find out what the officers are going to testify to. What their statement is going to reflect. As it relates to the van. Because the one thing that we dont have in that particular situation, there are no cameras or videos. Surveillance in that in that van. So most of the evidence of statements going to reflect what individuals going to testify to or the statements that are going to be made in regards to that transport. Im wondering, Deputy Haynes the fact that five officers have come forward and one has not. One is not cooperating, what does that mean to you . What does it say to you . Well did could mean several things. Im unsure you know whether its on the advice of counsel or whether, what role that particular individual played in this entire process of whether he was an arresting officer, a driver et cetera. Theres a lot of facts that come into play with that. And the investigation is ongoing. And so there are many reasons why that could take place and i really dont know why at this point. One thingday want to emphasize is that i think that because of the tragedy, that is involved here and the outrage and the frustration and anger that the community is experiencing over this situation, that these investigations are going do take precaution to try to get it right. That may take some time. So i wouldnt would not be surprised that individuals have not yet been interviewed or made statements. Okay. Keith haynes we so appreciate your time this morning, thanks for being with us. Thank you. Our other big story, Bruce Jenners riveting interview revealing that he is a woman. Listen to how jenner describes his identity. Are you a woman . Im me. Im me. Im a person thats and this is who i am. Im not stuck in anybodys body. Its just who i am. As a human being. My brain is much more female than it is male. Its hard for people to understand that. But thats what my soul is. Lets talk about this with chris wepterspoon, the entertainment editor at thegrio. Com. A lot of people were cynical about this interview before it aired. They questioned whether it was just an extension of the kardashian publicity machine. I want you to listen to Bruce Jenners approach and response to that. Oh no. We would never do that diane [ laughter ] are you telling me im going to go through a complete gender change okay and go through everything you need to do that for the show . Sorry, diane. It aint happening. He says that aint happening. What do you think about the overall tone of this interview . I think it was a brilliant interview. Diane sawer did a great job conducting the interview. And i think bruce really was heroic in telling his truth. Hes the pinnacle of masculinity after winning the gold medal in 1976 until now, hes been the father to ten children overall and he really is what we look at as masculinity in this country and for him to come out and tell his truth and to say those words, i am a woman, that is such a bold daring step. I think hes Opening Doors and bringing people to the discussion that might not typically want to talk about the transgender community. I think it was a brilliant interview. I think it was back in january that in touch the magazine they had that cover in which they put Bruce Jenners head here it is. Put his head on a womans body and then photoshopped makeup on to his face. This is not an actual picture that bruce jenner posed for. How do you think this interview changes the tone of at least the tabloid coverage . And for how long does it last . I think that bruce started off the interview in a brilliant way. He really was laughing about this. He said its kind of funny, you look at me you guys have known me all these years as this macho guy. And here i am at 65 years old, deciding i want to be a woman. I think the media will ultimately focus what they want to focus on. Well see how it plays out. He has an upcoming edocuseries coming out in july. Well see him going through the process of becoming an actual woman. I think the fact that hes being honest and hes letting it all out there, the media is going to kind of back off now hopefully and let him live his life the way he wants to. Theres been a lot of positive response on social media as well. Chris witherspoon, thank you so much for joining us. The death toll now, 806 after a massive 7. 8 magnitude earth quake hit the capital, kathmandu. At this hour rescue workers are struggling to find people buried under all this rubble. The quake was felt in india where officials are reporting at least 34 deaths there. The quake started avalanches on Mount Everest. Lips listen to a mountain climber here. We moved out of the tents and we could definitely feel a lot of ice and rock coming down the faces of makalu. We heard a couple of avalanches in the nearby regions. And 15 or 20 minutes after that the aftershock was the one which actually did damage on this particular mountain. We also heard from alex gavin, a mountaineer who tweeted out. Base camp huge earthquake and then huge avalanche. Running from my tent. Many people up the mountain. Cnns bureau chief ravi ravi agrawahl is joining us we know its dark there, its raining. Do they have enough resources, can you tell for the rescue work that needs to be done . Will it continue through the night . My guess is they dont have enough resources, im here in calcutta india. Where the tremors were felt. But out there in kathmandu and nepal at the epicenter of the earthquake theres no doubt that the death toll will keep rising. Almost every hour for the last few hours. Weve seen the death toll rise. We know that hospitals are overwhelmed in the capital city kathmandu. We know that some hospitals have overflows, and makeshift treatment morgues in the streets because there are so many people who are injured. Many of them very very seriously. And now its almost nightfall. It is raining in kathmandu. And its going to be very difficult to not only help the people injured and looking for help but also very difficult to extricate people from the buildings that have collapsed in kathmandu. And further away from the city we have people who may be trapped in other parts of the country. You know on mountains, the hilly parts of nepal and villages. So this is a huge exercise ahead of the nepali government. They will be looking for help from other places including india. Which has promised to help in any way that it can. All right.
