Table oh, my god, [ bleep ], oh, my god. I got it on video, dude. Oh, my god. Its our center field camera. Yeah. And its a little hop right now. Everyone stay calm. A little afterno shock there. It continues to rattle here. 8 21 here on the air. Were experiencing very strong shaking. I think we need to get under the desk. All right. Were going to break. Well be back after this. Wow. Need to evacuate the store. Everybody okay . All of the pictures on the walls and everything turned over on us. We live on the top floor in an apartment complex, so, we was all trying to come out the home. We were shaking down the stairs. I just noticed that the whole entire steps was actually shaking, theirs was leaning almost 90 degrees and almost fell. I was like, you got to get out of here right now. This is definitely robust sequence, but its far from unprecedented. Its just on the high side of average. I would probably start taking stuff off the walls if its not already down in high places. Make sure youre not sleeping under something thats still hung up. You saw all of the damage that was done there. Thankfully there have been no reports of deaths or serious injuries. Its the epicenter of the quake missed the areas in that region. But still thousands are waiting for the return of power and water services. And the usgs says this will likely be a billion dollar disaster. This morning, the ridgecrest fire chief said there were so many 9 fl11 calls they have a backlog. Cnns sara sidner is there this morning. This the sun is up and this is where people will get a fuller look of the damage. Reporter weve gone a few blocks and actually the damage from the outside looking in, doesnt look as extensive as far as damage. You can hear the sirens. We know that firefighters have already put out three fires after the 7. 1 major earthquake in ridgecrest. Now, were seeing another fire. We do not know what caused that fire. But certainly, it is unusual to have this many fires happening in this particular area. And there is lot of concern, again, about gas lines being ruptured. We will try to get you information on what exactly has caused that. We are told by someone who witnessed that burning and told it is a mobile home trailer here. I do have two witnesses here, jay crohner and kelly lewis came out to talk to us, they brought their dog sparkle. Tell me where you spent the night. We spent the night on a mattress on kelly jos driveway. Driveway, thank you. Reporter tell us, you spent the night outside, why did you think outside was better than inside. Because with everything shaking, its just not safe. I felt safer outside. Me and her were safer together being in pairs. Reporter can you tell me if youve ever experienced any of this shaking or even an earthquake before, im going to start with you . No, this is my first big one. The biggest one ive ever been in was 5. 1, that was years ago. But anytime, weve had big earthquakes, ive been out of state. Reporter which is lucky for you, and im sorry you had to experience this one. I know it must have been awful. What did it feel like to you . My rocking chair gone crazy. It was just like we had to sit down or crawl on hands and knees to get around because you couldnt stand up and be in an upright position without falling over. Reporter wow, kellyjo, you mentioned to me that you were around for the northridge earthquake. Compare the two because northridge was a major earthquake as well. But it was a 6. 1, not a 7. 1. The difference for you . They were both pretty bad. I was in whittier, and northridge and for me, i would say this is the worst, because i would say that only because i didnt have anybody in my home with me. Just me and my cat. It was a lot scarier being alone than with family, friends. To me, this was the worst. But again, my friend and i stayed outside in her driveway. And in the northridge, my family and i stayed out in the back yard and tent. Reporter a lot of people dont understand, they think, well, it must be safer inside. Like you said, this is something that the rescue crews and the police are talking about, that when you have things on your wall, if they are not secure or you have a chandelier ait decids to fall down you could be injured. You both stayed you stayed under a table, didnt you . No, actually reporter that was kellyjo, my bad. We were watching a baseball game. Reporter were you watching the dodgers . No, we dont get dodgers here, unfortunately, i got stuck with the angels. Reporter and you were underneath a table . I was under my table after the 6 point whatever it was, i had made a fort. I felt safer having blankets and chairs around the table. So if anything came crashing down it wouldnt hit me. My cat and i were underneath when that one shook. I just jumped on my cat and i held on to him so he wouldnt go running around. And we just stayed there until 2 subsided a little bit. Then i grabbed him and me and him started going around seeing if people were okay. Like my neighbor sue is alone. And my friend jaye. Reporter you talked about the fact that you had felt that 6. 4. At that point in time, does you think that had to be the big one . Its going to be maulsmaller fo now . Yes, we had that feeling. But, you know what, you kept hearing from the local news and media and youtube, theres going to be a bigger one. Thats all you kept hearing. So, we were trying to get ready for the big one. Reporter and the big one did come. And there is you all know this very well living in earthquake country, hearing from seismologists, there is a possibility, albeit small, about a 5 chance that indeed the 7. 1 may not be the big one. But the likelihood is that it is. And there is a definite possibility of there being tons of aftershocks. I know you have felt those aftershocks. We felt the aftershocks, are you doing okay . Neighbors checking on neighbors, thats one thing that the mayor had been asking people to do. Kellyjo did check on her neighbor here. And everybody so far okay. Behind me youre seeing a burnt out house. Were not sure exactly what caused that. But it happened after the 7. Magnitude quake. That was the first time structure to catch fire. And firefighters came out checking that out. Now, weve got this fire burning. You can hear the sirens going. There are only so many in this small town of 27,000, theres only so many rescue crews. Theyve been asking for help from other jurisdictions who have been lending a hand here. But, yeah, that smoke is pretty significant there. Were told from a witness that they think it is a trailer that is just over there. So far, the authorities are telling us, they do not have any fatalities and no major injuries which with a 7. 1 magnitude quake which is considered a major earthquake, the biggest one that this area and Southern California has seen in more than 20 years that is good news. There is some damage weve seen around this area. Not hugely significant damage either. There is going to be more of an assessment going on. The light has just come up here and rescue crews are checking on people. Sara sidner, you mentioned aftershocks there. The latest count from the cnn weather center, more than 600 aftershocks since the 7. 1. And we were discussing a little earlier today that not only all of these are Strong Enough or at a depth at which people in ridgecrest can feel them. You said you felt three thus far. Does that number still hold . Reporter no, there were a couple more. But very, very small. And thats the thing, there are earthquakes happening and sometimes, you cant even feel them. One thing thats interesting to note here, we mentioned that kellyjo and they had the little dog with them named sparkle. The animals often react before the people. Sometimes, they seem to know what is happening. We do want to mention animals, too. I happen to love dogs and cats and whatever else. But people need to make sure that their pets are secure as well because they get nervous and they get scared, too. Shes got a chip in her, and shes got two i. D. Tags, one has got a number to call and these people will get ahold of me. They have my phone number. And the other one is her city license, and they also have reporter they have that information. So thats important, make sure your animals have identification on them if case they do get out. It can be quite scary. Thank you, ladies so much im glad youre all okay in this neighborhood in ridgecrest. A lot of people shaken up as anyone would be with a major and significant earthquake here. Certainly understand, well get more of these damage assessments now that the sun is up. Sara sidner, thank you so much. Caller reporter sure. This one hit near ridgecrest last night at a 7. 1 magnitude. That makes it 11 times stronger than the one that hit the day before. There have been more than 600 aftershocks since the earthquake hit. For more on this, lets bring in meteorologist ivan cabrera. Ivan, i know that youve been following these aftershocks. And what ive noticed from your graphic there is that theyre marked in different colors, just for context for the viewers. Would you explain the significance of those color differences . Yes. So, when i showed you, victor, jesse, the colors basically mean the time frames here. They just change colors depending on the aftershocks, weve had hundreds. Ill tell you how much more im thinking. By the way, this an unusual event. We thought, seismologists thought 6. 4 was the main quake. We did not expect that was a foreshock. Something that happens before the main shake. When you get something this high typically, you dont get something higher, which we did, seven miles apart, 34 hours later. Exponentially 11 times as more. You by the way, i just want to bring this out that was a major quake, right . We have a strong quake and thats charactategorized by int. We havent had that in parts of world. These are worldwide earthquakes. Take a look at that, how many do we get, about 15 of 7. 0, this is certainly not unprecedented. Victor, you see the colors. 6. 4, the 7. 1, just to the northwest. Seven miles apart. Then all of the dots you see, those are aftershocks. The orange ones and red ones means they happened in the last six hours. Heres the forecast, as far as what were expecting as additional earthquakes, aftershocks. Nothing to do with the san andreas. This will not trigger earthquakes along the san andreas, these are different faults. That out of the way. With a main quake of 7. 1. Above 6, you get one average, above 5, you get ten. And over 1,000 with 3. 1s. And were likely to see that with 6. 4, 7. 1, ill leave you with this, something we havent talked about. No fatalities, thankfully, a few injuries. 100 million to 1 billion. 33 thats the chase. The bill over 1 billion thats a 31 chance that well get to that. We probably will, of course, this factors in geography, the area, population and less important, obviously, than loss of life which we have not had thankfully. Thankfully indeed. And those local officials at least expecting this to be a 1 billion disaster. Thank you. A Naval Air Station near the epicenter of that earthquake is, quote, not Mission Capable until further notice. Nonessential personnel have been ordered to evacuate the facility as a damage inspection is now carried out. Authorities tell us that security protocols are in place. And the safety of the staff is the highest priority. Well have more updates as they come in. Now, staying in Southern California, theyre bracing for those aftershocks that ivan just talked about. Awesome. Id rather not. The last hour, we spoke with chef tim kilcoyne. He saw a mobile home catch fire after a 7. 1 quake hit the area in Southern California. Chef tim traveled there after the first earthquake struck on thursday, hes helping feed those affected as well as first responders. Thanks so much for being with us. Tell us what youve been seeing. So, you know, its been right now, its still lots of aftershocks coming. When we got on the ground, we started assessing the situation, seeing, you know, where meals for first responders, that you mentioned, as well as red cross shelters at the time, yesterday midafternoon, you know, the shelter, there was zero people in the shelter. Everybody had gone back home after the earthquake from the day before of 6. 4. And then the 7. 1 hit last night, and, you know, that was i mean, at the time i was in my hotel room, getting ready for today, to be able to come and help start some meals and everything for everybody. And, you know, myself and my team, we got, you know, thrown around. Had to exit the hotel. You know, a few hours later, we got a call from red cross anded there was 120, 130 people that were in the shelter at that point. So, you know, it was definitely a big one. So, there has been a need since the most recent quake. How many people, if youre keeping count, have you served since you arrived for, i guess, the fourth of july quake . So, we actually arrived yesterday afternoon to start. Today was going to be our first day serving. You know, in the beginning, after the 6. 4, everything seems kind of under control in talking to, you know, the eoc here and red cross, there didnt necessary with seem to be the need for us to come out right away. However, you know, they were anticipating and potentially expecting a large, you know, what we thought aftershock or, you know, turned out to be a large earthquake. So, they kind of kept us at bay, you know, kind of ready to activate if need be. And yesterday morning, talked to them and they said, you should come out, even if its just a small number thats in the shelter, we can help out and everything. So, we came out this way to activate. And, you know, were here on the ground. And its a good time that were here. Well, we are certainly glad that you are there doing good work for people who need you. We heard there are people afraid to go back in their homes where they can go somewhere to get hem, sustenance or a good meal. Chef kilcoyne, thank you for being with us. Thank you. Were now getting reports of pretty extensive damage in ridgecrest. Homes swayed there, multiple fires broke out. Some injuries as well. Thankfully, there are no deaths. A homeowner described the exact home the violent shaking began. Its been a little crazy the last 24 hours. We happen to all about outside. We live on acreage overlooking the town. We were all outside. Watching the grandkids play. And cars were dancing. The dogs were going nuts and cattle. Just everybody standing outside since. And you just stayed there and rode it out . Yeah, theres nowhere to go. Theyve got helicopters checking the lines, plumes of smoke. Weapon saw a house fire. Maybe two of them tonight. Do you still have power . We have power at hour house. We didnt lose power yesterday. Or dont. There were major flashes when the second quake was going on, 7. 1 one. Other than that, weve had uninterrupted power . Was there any damage around the house . We lost a lot of stuff yesterday. As a precaution, we pulled a lot of stuff off the shelves. Took pictures down. The refrigerator doors opened up again and some things fell. Other than that, were pretty secure. You said the grandkids are playing around. What are you guys doing in the family tonight . Well, my daughters didnt want to go home yesterday. They stayed the night here. Kids have been cooped up all day. We had them out riding their bikes. And what are you going to do tonight . We dont know yet. No one is wanting to go in the house. I dont know if were going to stay out in the yard all night. Or pull the rv around. I spoke to residents who said they were on a mattress inside their house and ready to jump out. I spoke to some last night saying theyre moving to their cars. Are you considering anything like that . We definitely might stay outside. Last night, we didnt get any sleep. Anytime a quake hit, my daughters got a new baby, so we ran back to her. Other than t
