CNNW CNN Tonight With Don Lemon May 5, 2016

Opportunities in our polling for donald trump. Lets take a look number one at why Hillary Clinton can feel good as the general election starts. It doesnt mean it will last, but as of today, as we speak in early may, she is Holding Together the Obama Coalition. The president won twice, two Electoral College landslides. These were his numbers among men on election day 2012. Hillary clinton is doing a little bit. Among women, shes doing better. Among independents, shes doing better. Among white voters, shes doing better. In the suburbs, shes doing better. Shes also even doing a little bit better than president obama on election day 2012 among nonwhite voters. So Hillary Clinton says if i can keep the Obama Coalition together against donald trump, i can win. Is it all bad news for trump . No. Those demographic numbers show you hes got some work to do, but there are also some opportunities for mr. Trump. He says in a state like wisconsin, im going to recreate those reagan democrats, Blue Collar Workers disillusioned with the Democratic Party on issues like trade. In our poll, nationally donald trump has a fivepoint lead, pretty modest but a lead over Hillary Clinton on the number one issue for voters, who can best handle the economy. Look at this in the midwest. Donald trump knows his path to the presidency runs through the rust belt. Look at that, 59 to 34 on the midwest on who is better able to handle the economy. A big advantage for donald trump even though he trails clinton in some other key issues. How does that play out on the Electoral College map . Again, this is obama romney, 332206. A blow out for the democrats. This is where both campaigns start as they look ahead to 2016. Donald trump says, i can do that. I need to do that. No republican can win without ohio. As we just talked about, i can do that. Now, if donald trump could change those three states, its still not enough, right . Still not enough. But he thinks he can change florida as well. Thats my second home. In that scenario, im not saying its easy. This is actually a huge, heavy lift. But if donald trump can maximize his advantage on the economy and change those three states up here and florida, well, he would be the next president of the united states. Now, is that likely to happen . History says pennsylvania stays blue. Well see if that works out or not. If that happened, look at that. A tie in the Electoral College. 26 269. Where else would donald trump look . He says he can win new york. Mark me down as a skeptic, but lets see. Can he change it . He says he can go out to wisconsin, maybe minnesota, maybe a smaller prize like iowa or new hampshire. Now the flip side. Where does section clinton look . Number one, for demographics, she thinks its possible in arizona, possible in georgia. Why does she think that even more so . Now there are some conservatives who say lets run a third party candidate. We cant vote for clinton. We dont want to vote for trum. If you get that scenario, a conservative candidate who takes away some of trumps support, la tie know turnout is up. Its possible. Georgia in the south, conservatives stay home because of never trump. Hillary clinton keeps africanamerican turnout up. Its possible that could happen. All of this is hypothetical. But this is what the campaigns are going through right now. For donald trump, your Campaign Begins and could end if you cant change the map in the rust belt, in the industrial midwest. If youre Hillary Clinton, your number one priority, defend the Obama Coalition states but look for some opportunities. Heres one here. Theres one here. Were in may. Lets see how this plays out as we go through the spring, into the summer, and into what is likely to be a very competitive fall. Don. Thank you, john king. Appreciate that. Donald trump sat down oneonone with Cnns Wolf Blitzer today. They talked about the voters who just might be the key to the election. Lets talk about women voters out there. If youre going to be the president of the united states, youre going to need to do really well with women voters in a general election. And i will. Lets say against Hillary Clinton. Theres a new cnn poll thats out that shows 61 of female voters nationwide, republicans, democrats, independents, they say they back Hillary Clinton. Only 35 of women nationally say they back you. I think it will change. I think it will change rapidly because women want security. Women want strong military. They want to know that theyre secure in our nation. Women want Womens Health issues taken care of, and hillary is not going to do it like me. Lets talk a general election. Electoral college strategy, getting to 270 Electoral College votes. John mccain couldnt do it. Mitt romney couldnt do it. How are you going to do it . What states are you going to put in play that they couldnt put in play . Thats a question i love because its something i think i am better served than anybody. First of all you see how well i do in new york. I think youve won basically almost every county in the recent elections except by the way your own personal home county here in manhattan. Which by the way is now under review and they think i won that too. Really . Yes. Its called manhattan, but i won every single county in new york, but i won every county in pennsylvania, every county in maryland. I won every county in the five states plus new york. Thats a pretty good run. And i hear i won every county in indiana last night too. In new york state, im from buffalo upstate. Youll do well up there. I did well. But in new york city i did very well. It was like a 50 50 deal. Among republicans. Among republicans, yeah. But i had a massive youre not suggesting you think new york would be in play . Im sucking new york is in play. I know i will win upstate new york by massive numbers. Ill win outer long island by massive numbers. Ill win all the sections that are horribly affected by nafta, you know, a clinton deal. I will win sections of this city that nobody else could win. Yes, i think new york is in play. By the way, if new york is in play and if i won new york, then i win the election. You understand that because of the size. Ill win michigan. Michigan is not going to be even contested by any other republican. They wouldnt even go there. Ill win michigan because of whats happened. Theyve sucked all the jobs out of michigan too, and im constantly talking about michigan with the cars and whats happening. I think ill win pennsylvania. Im sure im going to win pennsylvania. Ill win florida, which you have to win. I think im going to do very well, but im going to i will put states in play that no other republican will even talk about or go to. Do you think the general Election Campaign has already started, you versus Hillary Clinton, that for all practical purposes, Bernie Sanders is out . Well, i think what has happened, theres been a little flip, and im even surprised by it. I thought that id be going longer, and shed be going shorter. She cant put it away. Thats like a football team, they cant get the ball over the line. I put it away. She cant put it away. So i thought that id be out there, and shed be campaigning against me. I didnt realize. So, yeah, ill be campaigning against her while shes campaigning against so the general Election Campaign from your perspective starts today. Essentially its started. It started today. It started actually three months ago when i hit her pretty hard. And your tone, supposedly more president ial, or will you really go after her . Well, look, you know, i went to the best school. Im a smart person. I did well. You know, i am who i am. I dont like to change. I dont like to really change. Sort of interesting, there was a little talk about will he be president ial . We had 17 people, all smart. One by one, week after week, boom, boom, boom, gone, gone, gone. I dont maybe want to change so much. And i do want to use that statement strategy for trade deals, and i want to use that same but i feel im a president ial person. The same strategy that you used to get rid of the other republican candidates, you want to use now against Hillary Clinton . I would say yes. I mean, and again a lots going to depend on how they treat me. I mean if they treat me in a certain level, im not looking to do more. Youve seen im a counterpuncher more than anything else. I dont really like hitting people first because i dont know i just feel ive always felt that im better. Like certain boxers, theyre better counterpunchers. Ive been very successful. Ive only been doing it for ten months, wolf. You know, somebody in your world gave me credit the other day. They said, you know, he has really been offensieffective. Weve never seen anything like it ever before. And somebody else said hes been doing it for ten months. Its very impressive that you came out of no political background for all practical purpose and now youre the republican president ial nominee. But i always have been very heavily involved in politics, so i havent been elected and it has never been my thing, frankly, and i wouldnt have done it this time. I would have been very happy to stay what i was doing. I have a great family, a great company, a really great company, and i 0 love doing it. But when i see the mistakes and the stupidity of what theyre doing with our country, the iran deal, the trade deals, everything is so bad, our military. They cant beat isis. When i see whats going on, i said i have to do this. When we come right back, its the democrats turn. Hillary clinton has some tough talk for donald trump when she sits down with cnns anderson cooper. Hillary clinton still fighting Bernie Sanders for the democratic nomination. But today she aimed her fire at donald trump now that he is the Presumptive Republican nominee. She sat down for an exclusive oneonone interview with my colleague, anderson cooper. Here it is. Just take us back to that to last night, the moment ted cruz dropped out and you realized who the nominee on the Republican Party was going to be. Well, it seemed pretty clear for some time how it was going to turn out. But i also know what its like to keep fighting to the end because i did that in 2008. And something can always happen, but it didnt surprise me at all that it was over last night. Assuming you get the democratic nomination, are you ready for donald trump . I mean hes already got an unflattering nickname for you. Hes unlike any other candidate probably certainly youve ever run against, anybody has seen in a long time. You know, anderson, ive seen the presidency up close from two different perspectives, and i think i know what it takes. And i dont think we can take a risk on a loose cannon like donald trump running our country. You know, donald trump has said its okay for other countries to get nuclear weapons. I think thats just downright dangerous. He has said wages are too high. I think we need to have a raise for the american people. Raise the minimum wage. Get wages back going up. I think when he says women should be punished for having abortions, that is, you know, just beyond anything that i can imagine. I think most women can imagine. He did walk that back. Well, hes a loose cannon. I mean hes somebody who has said so many things, and im sure hell be scrambling and his advisers will be scrambling, but hes already said all of these things. He said Climate Change is a chinese hoax, and i think its real, and weve got to pull the world together to deal with it. So you can go dn a long list, some of which hes tried to bob and weave a little bit. But i think its a risk. I think he is a loose cannon, and loose cannons tend to misfire. If he is a loose cannon, though, hes certainly willing to say things during a race against opponents, and weve seen this already that a lot of candidates were not prepared for on the gop side. Are you ready for that . Well, ive sort of been in the arena for 25 years. I think nearly everything that could be thrown at somebody in politics and public life has come my way. You feel like you know how to run against him . Oh, absolutely, but im not running against him. Im running my own campaign. Im running to become president , to really deal with the economy, get it working again, take on all the barriers that stand in the way of people getting ahead. I have a very Clear Mission in this campaign. But there were a lot of folks on the gop side who said they were going to be running on the issues as well, and they werent able to. Maybe they vuft didnt have the experience. Maybe they just didnt want to take him on on issues because they actually agreed with him. Everybody in that republican primary didnt want to raise the minimum wage, dont believe equal pay is a problem, dont want to talk about Climate Change. Have a lot of same views. So they were really trapped. They couldnt run a campaign on the issues that matter to america, and i can, and i will. There are democrats who are just worried about you against trump, that youre not ready for whatever he may throw at you, that hes i mean hes brought up a lot of stuff about a lot of people that nobody could have predicted. He was quoting from the National Enquirer just yesterday, you know. Hes made references to your marriage, to your husband. [ laughter ] well, hes not the first one, anderson. I cant say that often enough. If he wants to go back to the playbook of the 1990s, if he wants to follow in the footsteps of those who have tried to knock me down and take me out of the political arena, im more than happy to have him do that. Youre ready for that . Oh, please. I mean, look, this this is, to me, a classic case of a blustering, bullying guy who who has knocked out of the way all the republicans because they were just dumb founded. They didnt know how to deal with him and they couldnt take him on on the issues because they basically agreed with him. You think they waited too long . Youll have to ask them. I cant run their campaigns. They have to run their own. I can only tell you the campaign im going to run. And the campaign im going to run is about what we will do in the future. And i invite a lot of the republicans and independents who ive been seeing on the campaign trail, who have been reaching out to me i invite them to join with democrats. Lets get on the american team. Lets get off the red or the blue team. Lets get on the american team. Just finally senator sanders is obviously taking issue with people calling you the presumptive nominee on the democratic side. What do you say to his supporters . Should you be considered the presumptive nominee at this point . Im not calling myself that. I know there are still some contests ahead, and i respect senator sanders and whatever choices he makes. I have a lot of empathy about this, anderson. You know, i ran to the very end in 2008. Youve been there. You know what it feels like. And i won nine out of the last 12 contests. People forget that. I won indiana. I won west virginia. I won a lot of states, but i couldnt close the gap in pledged delegates. And the gap between me and senator sanders is far wider than it was between me and senator obama. So having been in his shoes, what do you say to him . Well, i know what he said last week, which i really welcomed. He said that he will do everything he can to prevent donald trump from being president of the united states. He will work seven days a week. Im going to really count on that because i want to unify the party. Im certainly going to be reaching out to his supporters who have far more in common with me and my supporters than they do with donald trump and his campaign. And up next, clinton versus trump. What to expect from the general election and a campaign thats breaking all the rules. Wanna drink more water . With sodastream you turn plain water into sparkling water in seconds. And because its so delicious, youll drink 43 more water every day. Sodastream. Love your water. Its me . Alright emma, i know its not your favorite but its time for your medicine, okay . You ready . One, two, three. [ both ] emma, emma bobemma bananafanafofemma feefifofemma emma very good sweety, how do you feel . Good. Yeah . You did a really good job, okay . [ female announcer ] to nurses everywhere, thank you, from johnson johnson. Donald trump and Hillary Clinton both speaking to cnn tonight, and the war of words is just heating up. I want to get reaction now from bob cusack, cnn political commentator bob beckel, and political commentator carl bernstein. Good to have all of you here. Bob cusack, we just heard from donald trump and Hillary Clinton. Heres what you tweeted out today. You said a preview of clinton versus trump, clinton, release your tax returns, trump, release transcripts of your wall street speeches. Nothingreleased. Thats a pretty good prediction. Is that what were in for over the next six months . Fasten your seat belt, don. I think were going to see some crazy stuff. The debates, i think, are going to smash records ratings. But overall, yes, youre going to have a big fight over the tax returns that trump has not released as well as the transcripts. I think its going to be very nasty. Its going to be very unpredictable. I think trump is going to have to do very well in the debates in order to win this thing. But weve seen, don, that hes done very well in the republican debates. Hes a good debater. So is Hillary Clinton. I just think its going to be overall one of the nastiest races youve ever seen. Hillary clinton says she is ready to take on donald trump. If he throws a 1990s playbook at her, she says, whatever it is, that shes ready. You wrote the book on Hillary Clinton, so what do you think . Well, shes very good at going negative. Shes done it in all the clinton campaigns. She wanted to bring out negative and leak information about george w. H. W. Bushs supposed affairs with women when bush was running agai
