CNNW CNN Tonight With Don Lemon June 9, 2016

Sitting down with president barack obama behind closed doors at the white house tomorrow morning. That should be interesting. The campaigner in chief telling nbcs jimmy fallon this. My hope is, is that over the next couple of weeks, were able to pull things together, and what happens during primaries, you get a little ouchie. Everybody does. A little ouchie. Who better to talk about getting a little ouchie and other things than cnns mark preston and dana bash. Good evening to both of you. We miss you here in washington, d. C. , mark preston. But im going to start with you since youre the odd man out. Youre not in studio with dana and me here. Lets talk about Hillary Clinton and her historic night. We know she has called Bernie Sanders. She called last night. Whats her next step . A couple things. One, i do think that Hillary Clinton and her campaign has really deftly handled the Bernie Sanders situation very well over the last 48 hours. She was very gracious in her speech last night. She did reach out to his supporters. I think right now whats best for them is to step back, allow Bernie Sanders to get out of the race on his own doing. He is very committed to trying to allow the district of columbia, which votes next week that is actually the final contest have its say. There are a lot of supporters in the district of columbia that supported with their checkbooks. I think thats important. I also think that Bernie Sanders is going to be looking, don, for some influence over the platform. The Platform Committee for the Democratic National committee met for the first time today. I think that if Bernie Sanders is able to have some influence over that as well as having a significant speaking role at the convention, i think these are things that are all doable right now for Hillary Clinton. President barack obama weighed in on this race tonight with jimmy fallon. Take a look at this. Is bernie going to endorse hillary . Well, im sure theyre going to have a conversation. Is he ever going to drop out . Or hes going to stay in . Im going to be talking to him tomorrow. Hes going to be coming to the white house. The main role im going to be playing in this process is to remind the American People that this is a serious job. You know, this is not reality tv. Do you think the republicans are happy with their choice . Um, we are. But i dont know how [ laughter ] i dont know how theyre feeling. Actually, you know what . That was too easy. Sorry. The truth is actually i am worried about the Republican Party, and i know that sounds, you know yeah. You know what it sounds like. He really held his tongue there, but he stopped short of endorsing, mark, Hillary Clinton. But you can tell that he is ready to get out on the campaign trail, right . Yeah, theres no doubt he is. We could go all the way back to iowa where he virtually endorsed Hillary Clinton in an interview with politico at that time. I think that president barack obama had some very, very strong things to say about Hillary Clinton and how he was close to her. He hasnt officially come out and said it, but youre absolutely right. Whats interesting there too is he deftly dodged it when asked that question. He said hes going to focus on how talking about how important the job is. Clearly a jab at donald trump, who of course was a Reality Television star for many years. So, dana, lets talk about this meeting, shall we . I want to talk about hes smiling, whatever, there. Is he going to have a come to jesus with Bernie Sanders . Probably some version of one, yes. And, look, thats why Bernie Sanders Bernie Sanders knows whats coming, not just in the meeting hes going to have with the president tomorrow, but maybe more importantly or as importantly, in the meeting that he will have with the Senate Democratic leader, harry reid, whom he has worked with for decades now and knows very well. Maybe that could be a more candid conversation. But at the end of the day, to marks point, its the question of what do you need . What can we do . How can we help you so that you get behind Hillary Clinton and, more importantly, much more importantly, get your supporters actively, vocally say to your supporters, get behind her in a way that he seemed pretty reluctant to do last night even and especially after Hillary Clinton clearly got not just the superdelegates but the pledged delegates. Do you think he stands a chance to become her running mate at all just quickly because i want to get to this sound bite. Look, hes 74 years old. Theyve had a tough time, and at the end of the day, i think its highly unlikely. All right. Here is Hillary Clinton speaking to Anderson Cooper about a potential running mate. Listen to this. Im looking at the most qualified people, and that includes women, of course, because i want to be sure that whoever i pick could be president immediately if something were to happen. Thats the most important qualification. So if you have as high an ufr favorability number as both of our presumptive nominees here, the second person on the ticket, the v. P. , is a very important choice, correct . I think it is in that you dont want to pick somebody who is, you know, incredibly unpopular. Thats kind of a nobrainer. The last time historically it has mattered who a nominee put on the ticket was lbj. That was a long time ago. So, you know, i think certainly its do no harm, and as Hillary Clinton said, which we cannot lose sight of, can this person step into the presidency . But biden did help president obama. His choice helped. Look because similar criticism of donald trump. You want a complement. You want somebody who is going to complement the nominee. I mean look at what happened back in 1992. Everybody sort of took a step back when bill clinton picked al gore because it was like two peas in the same pod. I remember that. Everyone in the newsroom was calling it the cute ticket because they were so young. Right, because they were so young. But at the end of the day, it was a good moment and something that provided a real contrast with george h. W. Bush because it was the youth ticket. So certainly you want somebody who can complement. But i do think one thing i will say is that what she could do if she really sees that shes in trouble with getting the Bernie Sanders supporters behind her is pick somebody who is very clearly appealing to them because of their issue set. Donald trump stuck to his script last night. He was more toned down. Now is he promising an anticlinton speech next week. Is he getting the hint that he needs to stay on message here . Don, if i answer this question definitively, id be lying to you and to everyone who is watching tonight. We dont know. We dont know. Weve seen this play before. Heres the deal with donald trump. And to go back to what barack obama said when he was asked about having to face him in the general election, barack obama said, oh, were happy that were facing him. Thats actually not true. If you talk to democrats who are involved in the process, they would have preferred to run against someone like ted cruz because they knew the book. They dont have a playbook to run against donald trump right now, and donald trump is a very formidable general election candidate if hes able to stay to script. Now, earlier this evening, erin burnett interviewed mitch mcconnell, the Senate Minority leader. He said over and over again that donald trump would be better off if he stayed to the script and did not go off and say things that are controversial. And quite frankly, you know, can anger people because they are so out of the mainstream. Yeah, and speaking of that, i mean even members of his own party, they dont have a playbook for him as well. Theyre chastising hip. They want him to stick to script. Heres republican senator jeff flake. What he told my colleague, jake tapper. I can tell you we wont have any republican in the white house that takes these kind of positions and makes these kind of statements. To make the statements that he made about the judge, to espouse a muslim ban, to espouse the conspiracy theories that hes s espous espoused. Cant see that person winning the white house. Senator kirk of illinois retracted his endorsement yesterday. Do they have any leverage when it comes to donald trump . Sure, they have some leverage in that they he, donald trump, showed in his speech last night that he gets that hes got to be in some way, shape, or form a different kind of candidate. And he does care what the leadership and what elected officials in congress believe about him as that person. Do they believe that, though, from one speech . No, no. Absolutely not. I mean from the perspective of donald trump. Yeah. So, yeah, i mean i think that they have a bit more leverage than they did during the primaries. Okay. But not much. I just want to say one thing, let our viewers in on a little secret. You asked the right person to get into Donald Trumps head because you know who played donald trump during our debate. I was there. Mark preston. It was mark preston. I sat in on some of those debate mock debate practices, mark was really good. He did a great job. Thanks to both of you. I appreciate it. Mark, see you in person soon. Thank you. When we come back, a new more president ial donald trump weve been talking about here. But is that what his voter want, and can he keep it up . House Speaker Paul Ryan is calling on his republican colleagues to come together and unite behind donald trump. Lets discuss now. Matt lewis is here. Hes a cnn political commentator and a senior contributor to the daily caller. Seni senior, thats a big deal. Matt schlapp, a big deal as well. Last night we saw a more subdued donald trump. Lets take a listen. I understand the responsibility of carrying the mantle, and i will never, ever let you down. Too much work, too many people, blood, sweat, and tears. Never going to let you down. I will make you proud of your party and our movement. So i would venture a guess, matt, that this is the donald trump that people in washington wanted to see, right . The big leagues. Is that enough to quail the criticism . No. Look, were at a i think its a critical moment of the campaign for donald trump. I think he had a bad week, a terrible week, and i think the party and the Party Leaders want to see him back on message. Focused on why hes running for president , what his message is, and take on Hillary Clinton. And remind people Hillary Clinton has been involved in a series of scandals, and shes being investigated by the fbi as we speak. That is the donald trump that republicans want to see. So it is i mean they may be reassured by last night, but his supporters i dont think his supporters really liked it. I dont think he really liked it. Maybe you do. I likened it to when you see kids, right, having a tantrum in public and their legs fall out. Have you seen my children . I dont want to use a teleprompter, right . How many times have we seen him in crowds like mocking the president and mocking Hillary Clinton . Watch this. We dont want teleprompters, right . No teleprompters. We ought to have a law that if youre running for president , youre not allowed to use teleprompters. Its too easy. Look what we got the last time. We got a teleprompter guy. We dont need that. I dont do the teleprompter thing, which would be so easy. Wouldnt that be easy . I have two teleprompters. I watched hillary the other day. She has the biggest teleprompters ive ever seen. In fact, if youre sitting on that side of the room or that side of the room, you cant even see her because when theyre outside, theyre painted black, so you cant even see her. I mean teleprompters for trump now, and hes using them. Heres what he told time magazine, though. It was because he had a lot of detail in the speech. But if he keeps this up, do you think hes going to lose his appeal, the thing that makes him authentic . Thats where hes in a real bind right now because its a catch 22. So he can either be authentic and say stupid, controversial things, or he can be scripted and sound robotic and not be authentic. And so what does he do . And i think just clearly what he did last night did not work. It seemed awkward. Maybe he could get used to reading a teleprompter, but its a different skill set, and hes not used to it. Who are you telling . To make it seem like you are not reading, matt, schlapp, we know trump needs to expand his base. But the question is are people going to buy this new donald trump, this new more come on, there is nobody who has run for president who has been more off the cuff and more unscripted than donald trump. For these critical moments for him to actually go through a well thought out speech is the smart thing for him to do, and he ought to keep doing it. I think you know what his supporters love, and i am supporting hip. What his supporters love is he was back on message. He wasnt talking about this judge and the case and all these other things that are extraneous to the president ial campaign. He was talking about his message. If he stays on his message, hes got a chance in this race. If he repeats that performance he had last night for a week or two, then its really over for him. Hey, matt, no offense. When have you been right on donald trump . I wrote a book called too dumb to fail thats basically the definition of his campaign. Was that about donald trump, or was that about the party . You should read the book. In fact, i have read it and so has my wife. The point is this. Donald trump matches the times for our party in many ways, and i know people continue to be critical about how hes going about doing it. If he stays on message like he was throughout the primaries, he is going to be formidable for Hillary Clinton. You mentioned the judge, and you mentioned staying on point and all of that and keeping to message. But trump says that his republican colleagues need to, quote, get over it when it comes to his comments about judge curiel. Lets listen to that. Theres a lot of anxiety there. Theres a lot of you know, theres a lot of anger. I guess anger. They just cant come back. They cant get over it. So they have to get over it ideally. As to whether or not they endorse me, its okay if they dont. But they have to get over it. They shouldnt be so angry for so long. Do they have to get over it . I mean how long will he be able to continue to ignore it . Do they have to get over it . I think the problem is that donald trump keeps doing this. This isnt weve had a year of him basically picking fights with different types of people. And so i dont think this is an anomaly. I think this is whats going to be next . Whats the next shoe to drop . I think what id like donald trump and his campaign to understand is that voters move closer to you, and they move further away from you according to what you say and what you do. And there are all kinds of never trump people in the Republican Party who dont want to support him. But as they watch his campaign go forward, they could get closer to him. As a matter of fact, they could even, as we get closer to election day, they might pull that lever if they realize how bad a president Hillary Clinton will be. Its all about courting them. To my question, do they have to get over it . Absolutely not. People ought to follow their conscience and do what they think is right. If republicans thing the right thing to do is not support him, we ought to respect that and we ought to try to court them. What the Campaign Needs to do is court them. Theyve seen a president clinton and they didnt like it, don. They dont like the idea of Hillary Clinton being president and they have this krikcontradin inside their own brain where they might not like donald trump but they hate the idea of Hillary Clinton being present. You can see it happening inside them. Theyre saying his comment was racist. I dont appreciate it, whatever. But hes better than Hillary Clinton. I dont know how much sense that makes because it makes a lot of sense. Well, it doesnt make sense when youre the speaker of the house, and you can say, he said something racist, and im still endorsing him. He said something awful. But, you know, to still endorse it doesnt mean that if you dont support him, that you necessarily support Hillary Clinton, i guess. Yes, it does. In america, lets face it. We elect either democrats or republicans in america. And for all these people who have the fantasies or idea there will be a Third Party Person or gary johnson is going to be the president , get over it. Its illogical. Its either going to be donald trump or Hillary Clinton. The republican nominee or the democratic no
