Is trump finally getting back on track tonight . Reporter well, i think some of his supporters certainly hope so. Tonight was definitely a major step in that direction. Look, its very clear youre right, that this campaign needed a reset. They needed to turn the page. What donald trump did here in wisconsin today is coming out and saying not only is he endorsing paul ryan, but what he did was he started to quote Ronald Reagan, talking about the need for a bigger tent, saying the need for unity. Then he went a step further, saying he was also endorsing john mccain and senator kelly ayotte. So in our shared mission to make America Great again, i support and endorse our speaker of the house, paul ryan. Paul ryan. Good. Hes a good man. Hes a good man and hes a good guy. And we may disagree on a couple of things but mostly we agree and were going to get it done and were going to do a lot of wonderful things. Hes a good man. And while im at it, i hold in the highest esteem senator john mccain. For his service to our country, in uniform and in public office, and i fully support and endorse his reelection. Very important. Well work together. I also fully support and endorse senator kelly ayotte of New Hampshire. A state i truly love, primarily because that was my first victory but i love New Hampshire. No. I love New Hampshire. Its one of the most beautiful places. Shes a rising star and will continue to represent the great people of New Hampshire so very well for a long, long time. Senator kelly ayotte. Reporter for whatever reason, maybe its sinking in the most recent polls that have come out, maybe its been all the bad publicity. Whatever the reason may be, donald trump taking a major step today here in green bay, wisconsin, with those endorsements, telling the crowd we may have disagreements but he said we will all disagree as friends, unify the party to move forward in order to try to beat Hillary Clinton. Really sticking to the script and reading it right off the cards, right off notes. Something you rarely see donald trump doing. I have to ask, any of wisconsins top gop brass, paul ryan, in attendance at trumps rally tonight . Reporter well, top gop brass, if you count mike pence, but no paul ryan here, no Governor Scott walker here, no senator ron johnson, none of those people were present. But look, there could be a reason for that. Remember that paul ryan had said he had not even spoken to donald trump since the rnc, so i think there was, you know, some sort of uncertainty as to what donald trump would do when he took the stage here today, even though the reports had surfaced early on that he would come out and endorse ryan, but i think there was some uncertainty there simply because donald trump is the type of man who is hard to predict. You know that. We have all seen it throughout the campaign. So that could be the reason why you did not see more prominent wisconsin members of the gop on the stage here with donald trump tonight. Michael, donald trump reading off a piece of paper, finally endorsed paul ryan after immense pressure from the party, reports of outrage from Reince Priebus and only after his running mate, mike pence, voiced his support. Heres my question. Why do you think trump withheld his endorsement to begin with . Well, he shouldnt have withheld his endorsement to begin with. I think it all goes back to the paul ryan lack of endorsement a month or so ago when he was trying to oneup paul ryan. This is the problem with donald trump. He always does something to put himself on the front pages and then gripes the fact the media is not covering Hillary Clinton. I think the media would cover Hillary Clinton more if donald trump spent less time trying to be on the front pages of newspaper and the lead story in many of the news stories that come out even on cnn or anyplace else. Right before the endorsement, he quoted your father. Lets listen to this. I understand an embrace the wisdom of Ronald Reagans big tent within the party, big, big tent. Remember, Ronald Reagan. Great man. Brave guy. Remember he included reagan democrats and independents and republicans, lot of people. Were going to have the same thing. There are a lot of democrats perhaps in this room. Are there a lot of democrats in this room . Raise your hands. Eh. I mean, i dont think we need too many, to be honest with you. So i embrace the wisdom that my 80 friend is not my 20 enemy. Ronald reagan. Stated by Ronald Reagan. Pretty good. We will be the big tent party. Whats your reaction to that . It was pretty rough for him to be able to get that out. Somebody must have drilled it into his head what he needs to say, because it didnt come out im glad you said that. Glad im not the only one. He did not veer from that paper. Hes like kelly ayotte, i support. Looked like a hostage video. Ronald reagan spent the campaign burning down half the tent to make it a bigger opportunity. He kept trying to fill that tent. I think its great to mention my father. Its wonderful i had Ronald Reagan as my dad, we had him as president for eight years, but the reality is those reagan democrats hes talking to are 90 years old. He has to find a message thats going to bring in the millenials, bring in others to the tent and make that tent his tent. Ronald reagans tent is gone for all purposes because people age out of that tent and they die and they go away. My daughter ashley, 33 years of age, a millenial. I want to say other stuff but im not. Ryan, what do you think of this . When i was watching it, it reminded me of the Bowe Bergdahl hostage videos the taliban took. He looked a little under duress. We all know from the reporting there was a complete and utter freakout among Senior Republicans this week telling him, telling trump, that he cant not endorse the speaker of the house, he cant be playing games with john mccain just because they had a personal tiff earlier this year. There are people in the mccain world who want mccain to withdraw his endorsement of trump and there is a lot of loose talk this week in republican circles, oh, what are the rules in the party if we need to have a new nominee, is trump really you dont think all is forgiven now that hes done this . Im just saying theres a lot of pressure on trump in a way we havent seen before for him to do this and he was a good soldier and did it. I just want to say, thank you to michael for pointing out the reagan democrats are either republicans or dead now. There is so much talk about how republicans have to win back reagan democrats. That phenomenon is just ancient history in politics. And to make another point, if i can make another point, donald trump needed to endorse paul ryan. Paul ryan didnt need that endorsement. But the reason he had to endorse paul ryan is because without paul ryans district in wisconsin, if donald trump doesnt win that district, he does not win wisconsin in november. It was more for donald trump today than it ever was for paul ryan. Why do you think that why dont you think, michael, that donald trump didnt realize this from the beginning when, for whatever reason he withheld his endorsement of ryan and others . Why didnt he realize that from the beginning, that he needs ryan at this point more than ryan needs him . I think when he saw the latest polls and this last couple of weeks have just been outrageous for him, he finally started to listen to somebody. But look how hard it is for him, writing that on the notes and trying to say every word exactly how it was said. The problem is, will he be able to say that tomorrow and follow through and keep the eye on the prize which is the presidency instead of on himself. Ryan lizza, my colleague jake tapper spoke with Ohio Governor john kasich today. Heres what he said about voting for trump. Have you ever voted for a democrat for president . No. You have only voted republican . Well, im a republican and have been. Is it possible you will not vote for a republican for president . Lets not get ahead of ourselves. This is very disturbing and alarming to me. I shouldnt say alarming. Its not alarming. I wish that i could be fully enthusiastic. I cant be. So i dont know whats going to happen at the end. So can trump win without support from folks like john kasich or meg whitman or Richard Hanna . The lift st of defections and nonendorsements go on and on. Ohio is a really important state. I dont see any chance of donald trump winning this race unless he wins ohio. Kasichs a very important political figure there. He has a whole network of activists and elected officials that not that he necessarily controls but that he can activate if trump actually reached out to him and got his endorsement. So its just politically, whatever pride that trump has in wanting to go suck up to some of these politicians, if he wants to win he needs them. Thats whats so puzzling about basic politics 101 that he refuses to engage in. One other thing about the 80 thing trump said today, im not really sure that thats true in the case of ryan and trump. If you look at entitlements, foreign policy, trade, any of the big issues, even tax reform, any of the big issues, trump and ryan, they disagree. Immigration reform. They disagree on all of the big issues in the Republican Party. So i dont even know that theres an 80 agreement there. So the fact that trump wanted ryans was flirting with paul ryans opponent who frankly is idealogically closer to trump, giving trump a little bit of credit there, hes idealogically more in tune with paul ryans opponent than he is with paul ryan. Yeah. Michael, can i ask you about this, i have been noticing you responding to a lot of Trump Supporters on your twitter page. They are calling you a republican in name only. You responded to one person saying if you are a rino that would make your father one, too. Why do you think you are getting so much heat . Yeah, because i dont think people really understand who Ronald Reagan was. A lot of people are out there redefining my father in their image instead of who he was. My dad was a pragmatist. He was a conservative but understood he had to bring other people to the table to get things done. When i speak to republican groups they say would you nominate today someone who raised taxes as governor, signed an abortion bill as governor, nofault divorce as governor and was my god, a union leader and it was the Screen Actors Guild . That person wouldnt see the light of day today in the Republican Party. Yet hes the greatest president we feel in our lifetime and he was, because my father looked at the whole of the person. Why would he go out of his way to tell the Washington Post that he wasnt quite there yet to endorse him, to provoke this massive gop freakout, only to endorse him after all, just a few days later . Well, its bizarre and one only can imagine he had to have his mind changed. Maybe Paul Manafort said look, you need to win wisconsin, you need paul ryan more than paul ryan needs you. And this might be an occasion where he had to check in with the Central Command and be persuaded that this was the right move to make. I think ultimately, he made the right move. I think if he can do what he did today for the next 96 or however many days, he would be much better off. Isnt he his own Central Command, though . Isnt that what we have kind of heard, that hes his own thing . Every once in youre right, i think by and large, he runs the show and he goes by his gut instinct. But every once in awhile, Paul Manafort sneaks in, changes his password on his twitter machine and gives him cue cards and he does great. Because i think there are a lot of people out there who are thinking that trump, this makes him look petty, maybe even vindictive, that it was just payback for those who criticize him over his handling of the khan situation. What changed here . I think this is actually bigger than just an endorsement of paul ryan. The fact he stood up and endorsed senator john mccain, senator kelly ayotte, im watching twitter now and a lot of conservatives are very upset over this. They say i understand it, i get it, i dont like it. Why are they upset . They are upset because they have seen john mccain for the past five years has just called conservatives, ted cruz supporters, Trump Supporters, crazy, hobbits, whacko birds. He insulted the you tweeted this, you said why should donald trump endorse john mccain . He called Trump Supporters tea party, ted cruz, cruz crew hobbits, whacko birds and crazies. Is it a personal dislike or is there principle involved here . Its about the principle. I think mr. Trump and his campaign realized what a major machine we are running up against with the democrats and we are tired of fighting our own. We need their help. I have always said the grassroots are not going to survive within the Republican Party without the establishment and the establishment is not going to survive without the passion of the grassroots. I think this is mr. Trump saying listen, i raised you 83 million, i will publicly come out and endorse you. Now can we all get on the same team and start fighting the democrats. Im tired of fighting with my own party. I think this is a really big step about party unity. It sounds like honestly you are giving that advice to donald trump because hes been fighting with his own party. The party really hasnt been fighting with him.
