CNNW CNN Tonight With Don Lemon April 20, 2020

A vengeance i never knew when it would end. It was relentless, scary and lonely. And she said the isolation was worse than the body aches. So there she is right there. So shes recovering. She hopes to be back at work by the 27th maybe. But she has to get checked and go a certain number of days. She has to test negative for a certain number of days. Chris kwcuomos wife has now tested positive for the virus. Were hoping her husband james will continue to test negative for the virus. Because hes been taking care of her cooped up in the apartment now for the 1th day. 17th day. Sorry about the connection. But shes doing fine now and we hope she continues to do well. So take care of yourself. Sorry about that connection. It happens with technology. Well move on now and begin the next hour of cnn tonight. Im don lemon. Heres the latest on the coronavirus pandemic. We have reached another tragic milestone. More than three quarters of a million ace cases in the u. S. Stont. More than 40,000 people have. Netted and the in the face of all that, the president is passing the buck again claiming that testing for the coronavirus is, his words, a local thing. Wanting to have it both ways. The president who has been picking a fight with governors over when to reopen their state, he praised them. Even as he has been encouraging protests against stay at home orders that are so far, the only thing that can slow the spread of the deadly pandemic. Youre allowed to protest. I watched the protest and they were all six feet apart. It was a very orderly group of people. But some have gone too far. Some of the things ha happened are maybe not so appropriate. And i think in the end, its not going to matter because were starting to open up our states. And i think they are going to open up very well. Not sure which protests hes looking a at, but look at the ones on the screen. These are protests dont have to lie to you. He said they were six feet apart. Does this look six feet apart to you . Its not. The number of protesters you see here pales in comparison to the 40,000 americans who have died from the coronavirus. And the more than three quarters of a million cases in this country. A new poll finds that 58 of registered voters are worried that the u. S. Will loosen restriction toos soon. Only 32 worried that it would take too long. We need far more testing before we can start reare opening states. Experts say we need half a million tests every single day. And we dont have that. Were not even close. We need to be testing. Not just people with symptoms, but people with no symptoms at all. People who might have absolutely no idea that they could spread the virus to vulnerable neighbors, to family members and coworkers. We need facts to be able to make decisions about when its safe for people to go back to work, back to school, back to church, back to being with friends and team. Joining me now is White House Correspondent john harwood and jeff zeleny. John, well start with you. The death toll in the u. S. Has topped 41,000. 8 days eight it was at 20,000. Just eight days ago. Those numbers are shocking and terrifying. That wasnt the focus of tonight eegs briefing, was it . It wasnt, don. And i do think we need to point out there were two bits of news on testing, which is the top issue that the president offered tonight. One is getting close to a deal between the administration and House Democrats on not only this Small Business loan program thats run out of money, but 25 billion additional for testing. Thats needed. He also said hes going to use the defense production act to accelerate swabs that are a critical component in testing. So small steps in the right direction. But the striking thing about this briefing was that it was focused mostly not on the needs of the American People, but on the needs of the president s ego, his Reelection Campaign and his rep itation. Hes seen very harsh judgments of his own performance in News Coverage from other political leaders, governors say issing hes not doing his job. Twothirds of the American People said he was slow on coronavirus. Only 36 in an nbc wall street journal poll said they trust the president on coronavirus. What he spent the briefing doing was trying to say 20 the to the American People, no, please, listen, i have done a good job. He read out a wawall street journal column praising him. Saying positive things about him. Trying to persuade the American People and persuade himself he hasnt done as poor a job as people said about him. Its not what you expect to see from the political leader whose job it is to take all of us out of this nightmare. I want to bring you in. The president has been claiming that only democratic governors are complaining about the testing situation. Whats the truth about that . Thats not true at all, don. Just today we had a plea from the republican governmeor of oh on television asking if anyone from the fda is listening and could help them acquire more of the critical reagent needed to conduct coronavirus tests. We heard in the last week from the governor of nebraska and just today we had the Maryland Governor on cnn talking about problems with the testing situation. Your team has that clip ready, i believe. I think states are all working hard on their own to find their own testing. Lab capacity has been increasing. But its not accurate to say. Theres plenty of testing out there. And the governor should just get it done. Thats just not being straight forward. This is thot not a partisan issue. We are hearing the Critical Materials they need. So its not just the contracts. Jeff zeleny, you were in gn this week and saw the protests firsthand. They have since sprung up all over the place. Are these organic protests . Who have organizing them . Theres no question these are not organic protests. Most on both sides arent organic. They start with the group, they start with some type of essential. But in these cases, which really got so much attention there in lansing, michigan, on wednesday as they began to spread across the country, it was organized by the conservative coalition. Which was essentially an early group that organized the tea party movement. Were really almost a decade ago. Also the frrl fund connect ed with the secretary of education. Shes from michigan a long time michigan wealthy donor so they say they promoted this on facebook. They didnt organize it. But the reality is these are not organic protests. That doesnt take away the anger. Theres real awninger out there no question. As i was watching these protesters from afar on wednesday of this week, as we saw them across the country, many came because they just wanted a protest. They were supporting President Trump. They were supporting a a variety of issues. Antivaccination, pro life, but also some Business Owners out there who say, look, the stringent restrictions are hurting businesses. So some of them are people coming because they are frustrated. Everyone is frustrated by this. But this systemic organization were seeing in capitals across the country is no doubt being organized by a loose connection of groups and is rem any sent of the Tea Party Group from a decade. We will see them next week here. This is not something happening organically. The odd thing is they are protesting the president s own policy is. The white houses own guidelines. Saying the three phases of opening up, none of these states are ready for this to be opened up. Thats what is so odd. You see someone waving a trump banner as we saw in lansing, michigan. In fact, they are protesting the president s own policy. So it would take the president himself to shut this down. He hz no interest in doing so. I have a doctor standing by. I know you werent in all places at all times. Did did you see anybody getting fined or kick ed out or arreste in any of these protests by authorities . Not really. There was one small arrest in michigan because someone was breaking the law in a different sense. But people were standing close to each other. No masks. Police were letting them do their thing. This is a balancing act. They are not going to be arresting these people for speaking up, but the president , as we saw from the white house on friday, they are saying liberate michigan. Liberate minnesota. Hes inciting these protests. So as we head into this week, thats the issue here. Hes doing nothing to shut this down. They are protesting what his policies are saying. So thats the issue here. They are saying give us time here. The only reason i ask is because all over the country are being fined because they arent wearing masks. I saw someone getting kicked off a train because they werent wearing a mask. And yet you have these people unmasked protesting not getting fined or arrested. Im just wondering what the fairness is in all a that. Thank you very much. Appreciate it. Now i want to bring in dr. Harvey fineburgberg, the chair on infectious diseases. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. This is from the cdc website. I want to read it here and ask a question. A study out of china suggests an airconditi air conditioner could have contributed to the spread among three families eating in a restaurant. The yellow filled is circle that you see on the screen shows the person with the initial infection whul the white circles are people that later became infected. The distance between each table is about three feet. And theres an air conditioner by where families sat. The study said the only known source for infected people in families b and c was patient a1. So when you see this, what does it tell you about how infectious the coronavirus is . Don, we already know this is a very infectious virus. Its spread by respiratory droplets of different sizes. Some are visible, some invisible, some could be so tiny they float in the air. Normally the tiny ones dissipate in the open air. But in a situation you described, movement of air flowing from that air conditioner, across the table with the index case, who was infected and then finding those individuals from the family sitting at the ajay sant tables directly downstream from the air flow, its consistent with this idea that the virus can stay infectious in those droplets and in those cases small enough to be carried by that air float from the one table to the next, to the next. So what does this mean as we are thinking about opening things up . If this can be spread by airconditioning, thats alarming. Keep in mind, this isnt that it was spread in the circulation. This could be the flow of air. It could have been the fan. A breeze from a window. Its all the same downstream from the source. But the point is really important. Because in opening up in employment, we have to be aware of how do we protect employees, customers, students, visitors, in any business or any other enterprise. And that means distance because proximity is a risk. It means limiting the duration of exposure. So long meetings are worse than short gatherings. It means limiting the number of people who get together because the fewer the numbers the lower the risk that someone would be infected. It means that adjusting the physical environment in ways that would help people stay safe. And maybe introducing practices like everyone wearing a mask or even checking temperatures of people as they come into the build iing that day. So there are a lot of things that we could do constructively that would enable us to get back to a nearly normal way of business and function, but it does mean were going to make some changes in order to remain safe during this time. Not only is this virus highly infectious, were learning that many people with coronavirus are asymptomatic. How does that complicate the fight against this virus . There are a number of reasons this virus has been so insuddenhouse. First, it is infectious between human to human. Thats been obvious. But not every virus that makes this transition from another species has that. So thats number one. Number two is the incubation period is long enough to allow people to be complete ly asymptomatic, already infected and travel from any point on the planet to any other point bring ing the infection with them. The third point is what youre describing now. We have learned that patients who are asymptomatic, thats individuals who are are perfectly well, no fever, no aches, nothing wrong with them a at that point in time are still capable of spreading the virus because its become already infectious from them. So these are the kind of features added to the set is verity of disease among many people, especially the older population that make this a really, really dangerous pandemic. Doctor, thank you very hutch. Appreciate it. Its a pleasure. The last two days were the deadliest in massachusetts so mar. 159 people reported dead on friday. 156 on saturday. Heres what the White House Coronavirus response coordinator says about the situation in the bay state. We watch every county in a granular way. You have to look at it that way. Were a series of small epidemics across the united states. Were still very much focused on boston and across massachusetts. Where they continue to spread across massachusetts as well as in boston. Bostons mayor joins me now. Mayor, thank you so much. Sorry we just read that was awful. Thank you for joining us. You just heard dr. Birx that boston is the coronavirus hot spot. Do you have what you need to deal with the surge in cases . Testing, a couple guests back were talking about testing. I know that our governor we need more testing. We need more swabs. Were going to have more swabs than we know what to do with. We could use some of them here in boston and massachusetts. The talk of pushing us back and getting us back up and running certain ly we want to be up and running again. Theres no question about it. Boston had a hard economy prior to the the coronavirus, but we also have been careful. We have 175 people in boston. 5500 cases and they are going up every day. There was an outbreak at a homeless shelter which prompted officials to do more testing. Out of 400 people tested, they were all asymptomatic. Doesnt this show how important it is to test in the city . Testing is key. And were testing people in homeless shelters. Were testing people in Nursing Homes. We have to Start Testing people who dont live in Nursing Homes and dont live in homeless shelter s s to see whats happeg with regular boston yans. Were fortunate here that we set up a real strong n for the homeless community. We have 1,000 beds ready to go. But were seeing these outbreaks in group homes, but we still dont have i dont feel comfortable with the numbers to see the average person living in an apartment or home. Lets be honest here. Social distancing is very difficult. As you said n a group home. How are you handling this problem in boston . Today was a 60 degree day. A lot of people were disapinting. People were out golfing and playing soccer and people gathering. I think right now not understanding the severity of whats happening here in the country and in boston and massachusetts is just wrong. And while i have a national audience, social distancing is the key. If we want to stop coronavirus, we can listen to all the leaders talk all they want about how great they are. You stop by social distancing. Thats the only way its going to happen. Mayor, good luck to you. Come back and tell whaus you need. Thank you. Thank you very much.
