Donald trump, he held a news conference, saying he is the candidate who can bring the party together. Im a unifier. People will find that hard to believe. But i am a unifier. Once we get all of this finished, im going to go after one person. Thats Hillary Clinton, on the assumption she is allowed to run. Donald trump, not the only republican in the win column. Ted cruz carried his home state of texas. Scored a big important win in oklahoma, as well. And marco rubio, won the caucuses in minnesota. His first victory since voting began this year. His only victory. I should note, we are still waiting an alaska. On the democratic side, Hillary Clinton locks and wins in seven states across the south. And a big wickup in the northeast. Alabama, arkansas, georgia, massachusetts, tennessee, texas and virginia. Bernie sanders picked up four wins in vermont. Oklahoma, california and minnesota. Clinton talking to supporters as the results coming in, went after the republican field. Its clear tonight that the stakes in this election have never been higher. And the rhetoric we are hearing on the other side has never been lower. Trying to divide america between us and them is wrong. And were not going to let it work. Lets get to m. J. Lee. She is looking at the state of play. As john said, it was a super tuesday. Maybe more super than some. But a lot of the candidates leaving super tuesday with a different narrative this morning. Thats right, guys. I think the two big headlines coming out of tonight are, that donald trump had a very good night. And that Hillary Clinton had a very good night. And i think we were expecting both of those outcomes, heading into super tuesday. And i think tonight was all about donald trump and Hillary Clinton. Showing they both have a national coalition. And a broad base of support, that can win them the nominations and also the support that they can take to the general election in november. Donald trump, after winning the early states of new hampshire, south carolina, nevada, showing he can win a more moderate state like massachusetts. And more deeply conservative states. And evangelicalheavy states across the south. And for Hillary Clinton, who had more of a rocky start in the early states because Bernie Sanders really gave her a run for her money. She was able to prove in part, in large part, by really capturing the minority vote, including hispanics, among africanamericans. She has a national coalition. Trump and clinton, and both of the campaigns are probably happy at the results of tonight. And really, after tonight, eyeing the general election. M. J. , stay with us. Lets bring in josh brogan and dylan byers, our Senior Reporter and National Political reporter, maeve reston, and ron brownstein, Senior Editor for the atlantic. Ron, where did you see the support for donald trump . What surprised you about the big win for donald trump . How big was it . If anyone else had won alabama and vermont, arkansas and massachusetts, not to mention georgia and virginia, we would be saying this race is over. That was something that mitt romney could not do in 2012 when he was the nominee. Something that john mccain could not do. No one else in recent times has been able to bridge the geographic divide because Donald Trumps support does not fall along the usual lines we have seen in republican politics, which have divided the party along lines of ideology and whether youre an evangelical. Its whether you are whitecollar, collegeeducated or not. In every state, donald trump is running well among blue collar republicans. He was 47 to 50 , which is striking in a field this large. He does not run as well among the college republicans. But no one has been able to consolidate that. And that story is true no matter where you are in the country. Whats different this year, is because there is so much resistance to donald trump, among the leadership of the party, a race that would be on the brink of being over, people are looking for a way to continue it and take it forward. Can they find a plausible path to stopping him . Vermont, alabama, i thought you were going to sing a Woody Guthrie sign there. For the democratic race, Hillary Clinton with a lot of big wins. Bernie sanders on the board. On the board. Hes made it clear this race is going to go on for quite some time. When you look at the delegate numbers coming out of tonight, Bernie Sanders did not have a bad night at all. At least four wins that hes got up on the board. And he pulled it in a huge hall. And will be able to keep this race going. At the same time, he showed his limitati limitations, doing well in states that are white voters. Hillary clinton really showed her dominance among africanamerican voters and looking in texas, she showed a huge lead among latino voters. Showing that she does well in those Traditional Democratic sto strongholds. Josh, marco rubio, he has a win in the win column. He has a mark in the win column. This is a big night for him. Yes. Marco rubio beat expectations, which is the crucial thing. By not losing everywhere . Exactly. You can only win your first state once. And hes done it. That will eliminate ted cruzs line that anyone who hasnt dropped a state should drop out. Hes the only candidate thats beaten donald trump in three states. Exactly. Theres good signs for marco rubio, that his campaign is putting out notsosubtly today. If you look at the polls, compared to the results, that marco rubio beat the polls, especially in minnesota and virginia. Also, ted cruz beat the expectations in oklahoma. So, what were seeing is a narrative of slippage. The fact that donald trump has polls. And he is not beating the polls. That presents an opportunity. And marco rubio is about to be bolstered by millions of super pac and not organization money. We saw some of that. Now until march 15th, two, huge groups that are ready, the marco rubio donors have come off the fence. Theyre in the game. They have skin in the game. Nobody knows if that will have an effect. But for the first time, were going to see billions of dollars in antitrump ads. And those are mostly by marco rubio donors. Thats the most glass halffull analysis of one win out of 11. Im not picking on josh. Thats what the rubio people and Establishment Republicans are saying right now. And the funny thing is, for every rubio person is, ted cruz should be able to say that three times more . Thats true. The Rubio Campaign has been a study in how many times can you spin a loss . The Ted Cruz Campaign has been a study in that, as well. Like you said, in any other republican win season, the wins that trump has pulled off, the margins of victories, he should be the nominee. The reason he is not because hes effectively trying to take over stage a hostile takeover of the Republican Party. And theres a lot of voices that want to back rubio. And Ted Cruz Making a case that hes the only candidate thats beat donald trump in multiple states. For rubio, hes looking forward to march 15th. Looking forward to florida and ohio. Hes trailing donald trump by 15 to 20 points. Its hard to see what his path forward is. Beating the polls in florida dont bring you any delegates. You have to beat candidates. You can kill the polls. Arkansas was part of ted cruzs firewall. What are Republican Voters saying here. I want to go over the things that were said. You saw limits for ted cruz and marco rubio tonight. Theres 13 states with exit polls. Only in two of them has he gotten above 18 among voters that are not evangelicals. And the big, heavy evangelical states. He didnt win south carolina, arkansas, alabama. He won oklahoma and hes the three states that hes won, have had 63 of the vote. And if youre going to win 20 or less of evangelicals, i think that dye is cast, theres few places for him to go from this place forward that are natural for him other than places like louisiana and mississippi. He cant advance beyond the evangelical beachhead. In rubio, when he was standing on a stage with nikki haley and tim scott, he might be gary hart, he looks like lamar alexander, circus 1996, where he has a little bit of support everywhere. But not deep enough support anymore anyone to win. And virginia was the place that he really had to put a stake. It was an electorate that was built for him. He did well in northern virginia. He won College Graduates with 38 of the vote. But he did not win them by enough. Donald trumps dominance on the blue collar side of the party is so great, if you beat him among College Graduates, thats not enough. Someone has to match his dominance on the other side. And no one has shown they can do that. There were people joking that marco rubio, the one area in virginia, he won, was inside the beltway. Literally, inside the beltway. Politicians supporting marco rubio. If you are awake right now, the one state you care about more than any other, the is alaska. The one state we have not called. And we have an update. Were counting votes. Cnn with a reporter in anchorage. Paul vercammen counting ballots. Here are the totals, 9,683 in. I will start ath alphabetically. Carson, 10. 2 of the vote. Ted cruz, 35. 5 of the vote. Kasich, 4. 8 of the vote. Rubio, 6. 8 of the vote. 16 as i read off a screen. And donald trump, 32. 7 of the vote. Thats with 9,683 projection. We know they are shattering records here in alaska tonight, in terms of turnout. Right now, it is difficult to gauge what percentage of the turnout this is. Looks like we could be around 25,000 votes. Not sure. Others said they thought they exceeded vote totals by a good 50 of the precincts. We were in wasilla and west anchorage, where we saw a dynamic, energized turnout. Democrats were switching over to republicans just for the night. Alaskans have a lot of independents. They are also voting for the gop. Looks like record shattering turnout here in alaska. 28 delegates at stake. They will divide these up. Its not winnertakeall. Do they have expectation when they believe when they believe they will have the counting all wrapped up this evening or into tomorrow . Welcome to alaska and the tricklein theory of votes. As you may or may not know, there are 40 districts and some of them so remote, they will email them in. Were going to go west of the aleutian islands. Were going to go to the north. They will hopefully be done here, maybe 45 minutes. Ill ask you. When do you think you will be counting here . Midnight our time. Thats 4 00 a. M. Your time. Youll have to watch for the tricklein theory, as alaska and its 40 districts, many of them completely remote, just sort of come in, vote by vote by vote. We look at a screen. Were going to get up live. We will show you how many of them are not just filled in yet. Paul vercammen, in anchorage, alaska. Ted cruz, 35. 5 . If cruz were able to hang on here, you know, this would be his third state. A wins a win a win. In this republican race. When they are counting well, hey. In this republican race, weve seen third place being a win. Second place being a win. But a win is a win. This is one of the few state wheres they use sea planes to fly in the election results. I dont know if thats true. I made that up. Were going to get back to it. Coming up for us, a huge night for donald trump, winning seven states. Does this make him unstoppable . Ted cruz says he has a plan to take down trump, as long as pretty much everyone else in the race drops out. Where the battle heads next. And one thats sweet. Were building what we learn back into the cloud to make people and organizations safer. Together, we have a choice. We are blessed with a deep, talented, honorable field. For the candidates, who have not yet won a state. Who have not wracked up significant delegates. I ask you to prayerfully consider, our coming together. Uniting. Ted cruz, speaking to reporters tonight. Calling on the party to come together, uniting. And he means the other candidates, not named trump. They should drop out. In other candidates, not named ted cruz, either. Ted cruz saying he is the only candidate that can beat, has beaten and will beat donald trump. But marco rubio says not so fast, as he gets his first primary win in minnesota. And he looks towards his home state of florida. That comes up on march 15th. Can rubio or cruz or kasich or ben carson . Can any of them defeat trump . Our team has been up all night around the country. M. J. , i want to start with you. Ted cruz saying everyone should drop out but me. At this point, as we sit here, no one else is dropping out . No one else is dropping out. And frankly, i think everyone in the race is hoping that the strategy of, well, if everyone accept donald trump drops out, i can imagine donald trump. And i dont think thats going to happen as much as ted cruz would like that to happen. Its interesting. Heading into his victory speech tonight, it was clear his message was going to be, im going to be beat donald trump. He had iowa, texas and oklahoma. Thats three wins against donald trump. We got the race for minnesota. He had made his i guess victory speech, even though he hadnt won that state yet. The optics were change. I dont know if you noticed this. But rubio, again, made his speech before the race was called for him in minnesota. This was a big moment for him. This was his first victory of the 2016 cycle. An i didnt feel like he seized on this. And i think this is going to be the problem and question for marco rubio. When are you going to stop being the candidate who is the second choice for voters . The candidate who is waiting behind donald trump, perhaps behind ted cruz, as well, for the voters not interested in them the and that they can turn to marco rubio. His message really has to turn to i can be a winner. If youre ted cruz, where are you putting your money . Where are you changing your travel schedule looking forward to now . He has a couple opportunities, in some of the states coming up. States like louisiana, mississippi. He can potentially do well with very conservative voters. Try to do better among ev evangelic evangelicals. I think for ted cruz, this was, you know, perhaps a betterthanexpected night. He won with a decent number in texas. He has a good number of delegates going in. But he doesnt have opportunities on the board coming up. His path to a lot of people could look like a dead end. Dylan byers, i want to talk about marco rubio. And the difference between marco rubio and donald trump. If we can put up the board again, the delegates to date right now. We have 302 for donald trump. And 174 for cruz. And he got blanked, a very big deal. 302104. That means hes more than ohio plus florida away from donald trump right now. Everybody is talk about the winnertakeall states. He could do both ohio and florida and trail donald trump. Hes in a hole. Thats right. But wins in ohio and florida would put him back on the board and reput up the narrative that he can take on donald trump, which is the narrative that ted cruz has taken. I want to jump on the point about cruz doing better than expected. He did better than expected, in the context of the last several weeks. But if you look at where the Cruz Campaign hoped to be months ago, the south was his firewall. The south was where he was going to win big. Now, looking at louisiana and mississippi, and coming out of the south losing to donald trump, that was supposed to be his strong point. Its hard to see what his path Going Forward is, unless he can turn the narrative that he is the only one that can beat donald trump that people rally behind. Im not sure what the path forward is for cruz. Guys, stand by. Theres a lot more to talk about. Namely, whats going to happen to the Republican Party . It is a serious, serious issue right now, with serious questions being raised. That, plus were going to count more votes in alaska. Alaska, still counting right now, neck and neck, the race right there. We give you the latest updates when we come back. All her aches and pains.
