Does that sound like somebody donald trump would be the exact same effect for the Republican Party<\/a>. It would be about congress, and the infrastructure that the party needs and meanwhile thats not even to say the types of messages that he would make other republicans have to associate with which you would spend all of your time either denouncing or defending. He says he would make it all about himself that is very negative for the party. This kind of thing used to be said about Ronald Reagan<\/a> and former president ford in march 1980. Were saying to the new york times, Ronald Reagan<\/a> could never win a National Election<\/a> because he was too conservative and conservatives could not win National Election<\/a>s. Hes not conservative at all. Well, he most certainly is conservative. The Republican Party<\/a>, unfortunately, as it was in 1980, has a bit of a club bee atmosphere about him. They want all of the right folks and none of the outside folks and the outside folks are exactly the folks that win elections. They made those republican victors in 2010 and 2015 possible. And when we nominate establishment candidates, we lost. Theres a reason for it. And donald trump is the anecdote to this. So rory, what about this point, though . It gets down to virginia, as jeff was talking about. Why not i understand you want republicans to decide who the republican nominee will be. But why not allow new voters in, independents, the people energized by people like donald trump. Why exclude them . I think what donald trump does not know about politics, is what the Republican Party<\/a> actually is. The party is a campaign infrastructure. It is designed to have Republican Party<\/a> voters select their candidates. Not for independent voters like independent candidates, not for green voters, like green candidates. Its for republicans to nominate who they think is their best pick and this election should be decided by republicans. The reason why donald trump wants it to be decided by other voters is because he knows republicans do not want him as their nominee. Thats perfectly fine if they want to have a close primary with republican voters. Do it. Dont open the process saying that everybody can vote and then say after youve done that youve got to sign this piece of paper. Its either one or the other. Virginia does not have party affiliation, as you may or may not know in virginia. First of all, hes going to have to pick up another delegates because, remember, this is proportional to see how he does in the race. His campaign seems to be moving forward, not falling further behind and needs interference with trump. By that i mean, if trump and cruz start duking it out for all of the voters that want an outsider to win, rubio has to appeal to the republican base, which is weary of outsiders like this and seem to be a unifier for the party. If that is the case, if thats his reputation coming out of that early month of voting, then, as you sweep in to all of the other states and all of the other delegates, he may be able to continue picking them up because, remember, still proportional. By middle of march when it switches to win or take all and you have huge prizes out there, like his home state of florida, he may get big pushes towards the finish line. All of this is a long shot based on the current poll numbers, erin, but this is a strange year in politics. Stranger things could happen. That is true. Its possible but very difficult, according to the polls for rubio to pull this off. Do you really think rubio can beat donald trump and ted cruz . Yeah. I think its entirely possible. Again, its tough for anybody to do. I think it was a great package. It really explained what needs to happen. I think rubio has to stay alive early on. Hes not going to win iowa. No one expects him to win iowa. If he can win South Carolina<\/a> or nevada, then i think hes in the game. And if nobody else runs the table, nobody else starts winning every state, like trump doesnt start winning iowa and New Hampshire<\/a> and South Carolina<\/a>, if all of those things happen, he is very viable once we get to the big win states. This is the guy who i think matches up best against Hillary Clinton<\/a>. If republicans care about actually winning the general election, marco rubios probably the best way to go and maybe thats why i think he has a pretty good chance, with all of the caveats weve laid out already. Is donald trump concerned about marco rubio . Is that something that youre worried about . Not even a little bit. Its a long shot and theres a lot of ifs in that scenario and i dont think its going to happen. Trump supporters are solid Trump Supporters<\/a>. Marco rubio is not an option. The gang of eight is still there. Hes still soft on immigration and that is a key constituency for republican primary voters. Its why it hurts some politicians in the past because we have to get a handle on illegal immigration in this country so rubio is a nonstarter for many trump and cruz supporters. Rubio is trying to overcome immigration is it an issue with him but for the base voter it could be a problem. In South Carolina<\/a>, what i mentioned from trey gowdy, the question for you, matt is, do these endorsements matter . Some Congress Says<\/a> so . I think trey gowdy, of course s. A highly respected conservative. Katrina actually raised money for trey gowdy to try to draft him to be speaker of the house. This is a guy who is a highly respected conservative who thinks marco rubio would be the best man to be president. I think you make a valid point there, erin. Endorsements, by and large, are overrated and dont matter as much as we think they do number one, i think rubio is maybe the only game in town for endorsements, especially if its ted cruz whom basically most of his colleague hate or donald trump, the outsider, hes not going to get them for obvious reasons. What if right before New Hampshire<\/a> kelly ayotte endorses rubio . I think this at the right time, the right person and right place could make a difference. Katrina, what do you say to that . As matt points out, you yourself have supported trey gowdy. Actually, thats not true. I supported an organization that supported trey gowdy. I personally supported someone like jim jordan or mark meadows as speaker but an organization that i represented, we had 280,000 consistent voters who represented trey gowdy. But i dont think that political endorsements are going to matter at all. People are tired of politicians. Thats why were having this upset right now. So, no, i dont think if kelly ayotte or even Joanie Earnst<\/a> went out there and endorsed marco rubio or anybody else that its going to matter. People dont want politicians.
