CNNW Erin Burnett OutFront October 25, 2017

News, the head of the data firm hired by the Trump Campaign contacted wikileaks founder, Julian Assange, in 2016, asking about the 33,000 Hillary Clinton emails that she kept on her private server. The ceo emailed several people writing that he had emailed Julian Assange seeking access to the emails. The plan was to turn them into a searchable database for the Trump Campaign. Key was Jared Kushner and key to the firm itself, steve bannon. Bannon was Vice President and secretary of cambridge an lit kai until he stepped down to run the campaign in august of 2016. The change happening not long before trump professed his love for wikileaks. Wikileaks is amazing. The stuff thats coming out. It shows shes a real liar. This wikileaks stuff is unbelievable. It tells you the inner heart. You got to read it. Wikileaks, i love wikileaks. And Julian Assange himself has confirmed this email exchange that it happened earlier today, he tweeted i can confirm an approach by cambridge prior to november last year and can confirm it was rejected by wikileaks. Now, lets remember who were dealing with here. When you think about somebody reaching out to wikileaks and asking for help to get Hillary Clintons emails. Lets not put it on a democrat or anyone else. Put it on the current cia director. Here he is on wikileaks just six months ago. Its time to call out wikileaks for what it really is. A nonstate Hostile Intelligence Service often embedded by state actors like russia. So you have trumps own cia director basically saying assange is in bed with putin and youve got a firm working with the Trump Campaign asking assange for help. Late today, the executive director of the Trump Campaign issued a statement write iing i part, we as a campaign made the choice to rely on the voter data of the Republican National committee to help elect President Trump. Any claims that voter data from any other source played a key role in the victory are false. Of course, one problem with the statement is it has nothing to do with the question in hand. Its talking about voter data and ignore iing thes the clear connections. Including nearly 6 million paid to the firm by the campaign for its work. Dana bash is outfront. What exactly have you learned about the email sent from dame kayembe bridge to wikileaks . Well, the email comes from a man named alexander nix, who was the chief executive of cambridge. He sent it to several people including top donald trump donor, rebecca mer smercer. He said he had contacted assange trying to get access to hks i mails to turn them into a searchable database for the campaign or for pro trump Political Action xes. Now this is according to two sources who have seen this email. The sources say no Trump Campaign officials were on the email chain, but rebecca mercer, whos actually funds their family funds cambridge an lit kai was on that email. Not to mention the fact that cambridge was hired by the Trump Campaign about the same time that this email b about assange was sent. Which of course raises a whole lot of very important questions. Dana, this could be a very, very significant piece of information in the russia investigation into possible collusion. Could you put this in context . Why it is so important . Youre right. Heres why. It raises more questions about what efforts were being made by people with connections to the Trump Campaign or his orbit to try to work with wikileaks, which remember, ended up publishing emails hacked from the dnc and Clinton Campaign chair and u. S. Ed hackers acquired those emails. They got that to wikileaks to eventually publish. So there are already questions. As you know, about trump friend roger stone and his ties to wikileaks because he made Public Comments during the campaign seeming to anticipate these document dumps from wikileaks i should say stone denied direct contact with assange, but again, this is just the latest question about connections to him and potentially to russia. Thank you so much. Breaking the story tonight. And now, well go to jeff now outfront at the white house. I want to focus here on that statement that came out from the Trump Campaign after f the story broke. There talking about voter data. They said we relied on the rnc for rotor data. Not really addressing the question here. How close was Trumps Campaign to this firm, which emailed assange asking for help . That has been a question for a very long time. Of course, its Standard Practice for political and president ial campaigns to use several firms. The response in the statement was nonresponsive to this specifically, but we know some metrics that link camera bridge with the Trump Campaign. The number is this. 5. 9 million. That is the money that the Trump Campaign paid to cambridge over a sixmonth period from july of 2016 or so to the end of 2016. 5. 9 million. Thats according to filings. So we know they were linked. Also, several other linkings. Jared kushner, he has talked about bringing them on board. Steve bannon, remember him . The chief strategist here at the white house. He was on the board of directors and as dana was mentioning, the mercer family. Top funders of the trump effort. Also top investor in this firm. So the question here is there are several links. We do not know how much of a role they played, but erin, its all about this. It is all about the specific information, how voters were able to process messages. If a campaign was sending something out, these specific data from cambridge would sort of say if a message was effective or not, using some types of controversial, some information here, but they were able to essentially get the Trump Campaigns message out to a broader audience and show his emils were more effective. Again, the 5. 9 million number has been disputed in the past by the Trump Campaign, but thats what sec figures show the Trump Campaign paid over six months to cambridge. All right, thank you very much. Im just looking here at the sec data. It does add up to 5. 912 million. According again to the sec. Outfront now, the former director of National Intelligence under president obama. James clapper. Thanks very much for being with me. We have an email sent by the head of this firm with all these links to the Trump Campaign to Julian Assange asking for help in getting the clinton emails. Well, you cant make this stuff up u. First of apoint, which has been previously alluded to is the evidence that we had, which we published in our Intelligence Community assessment that there was a clear linkage between the russians and wikileaks. And the source of the emails that were pull frd the dnc to include John Podestas were from the russians. I wonder again, were all trying to connect dots here. Is how much this data may have played in the focus, facebook and twitter and other ads that were drirected at specific audiences in specific states. So you wonder, in january that we were just touching the top of the iceberg as we get more fidelity on this as time goes on. So when you hear the current cia director, who is a big proponent of his bosss policy, he is clear about that. He is not mincing around this. Not dancing around it. Hes very clear. One case where i completely agree with him about how his characterization of wikileaks as a nonnation state Hostile Intelligence Service. Thats what they are. So given that and youve got this email from a firm working for the Trump Campaign, they paid 5 a. 9 million there. Steve bannon was a top donor. Jared kushner wanted to hire them. This included the top donor on it. Does this move you any closer to thinks there was collusion . Certainly suggestive. I dont know that this in and of itself is a smoking gun, but it is clearly indicative of some connection here. Between the russians and via wikileaks and the Trump Campaign. So you know, Trump Campaign, you heard their response. They said they relied on rnc for voter data, which is a separate point. Trying to deny it without addressing it. Their quote was any claims that voter data from any other source played a key role in the victory are false. Hillary clintons emails arent really about voter data. Its about getting dirt on your opponent. What do you make of this quick attempt to distance themselves without addressing the actual fact . Well, almost pertains too much here. The very quick statement thats really a diversion of deflection somewhat from a real issue, so again, at least in my mind, the kind of heightens the suspicious. So you know, were also learning amist all of this, trump has been happy about the news weve learned that the Clinton Campaign paid for part of the dossier. That was about collusion between the Trump Campaign and russia and included salacious accusations against the president himself. We know that some of the allegations in that dossier had been krocorroborated by intelligence. You knew some of these things had happened, particularly conversations between foreign nationals that were in the dossier. But even though the things had been kroeb rated, heres what he said about the dossier with these new revelations and clinton paying for it. Heres what he said today. I think its very sad what theyve done with this fake dossier. It was made up u and i understand they paid a tremendous amount of money. He just now refers to it as the fake dossier. Which is why i want to make the point some has been corroborated. Do you think some or most is true . I dont know that. First, i do want to comment on the pedigree of the financing, the trail there. When we did our Intelligence Committee assessment, we were aware that the, there had been Research Done and that some republican candidates as a matter of fact had contracted through i think fusion gps to obtain what it later became known as a dossier. So clinton paid for part of it. That work was handed off later to the dnc and the Clinton Campaign. So i think this is something that bears an audit trail by experts in finances that can track the auditing for this. And to see who was responsible for it. I think with respect to the dossier it, the key thing is doesnt matter who paid for it. Its what the dossier said and the extent to which it was corroborated or not. We had some concerns about it from the standpoint of its sourcing, but the same time, some of the substantive content, not all of it, but some, we were able to corroborate in our Intelligence Community assessment x which from other sources in which we had high so when the president refers to it as fake dossier, that is false. I dont think thats an accurate characterization for the spire tentirety of the dossier. All right. Thank you very much, director clapper. I appreciate your time as w always. Next, is trump flipflopping on the middle class . The president said 401 k s are untouchab untouchable. Thats the bulk of savings for 55 million americans. But guess what, he didnt mean what he said. Tonight, President Trump making a stunning flip flot saying one of the greatest tax breaks is on the table to possibly be taken away. Here he is. 401 k s to me are very important. And theyre important because thats one of the big benefits to the middle class. I didnt want that to go too far. Said this morning well, maybe it is and maybe well use u it as negotiating. Maybe it is . I mean, this is an increde bable admission because this is what trump tweeted on monday about reports that republicans were considering cutting the tax break for 401 k s. He said quote, there will be caps tho change to your 401 k . This has always been a great and popular middle class tax break that works and it stays. Except if if it might not because the its on the table. This is really important because this 401 k discussion is crucial for working americans. The republican proposal would dramatically slash how much money you can put in your 401 k tax free. So it would be 18,000 a year now. They would cut toyota 2,400. So 18,000 to just over 2,000. That would slam 55 million americans who have more than 5 trillion invested in their 401 k s according to a trade group. If that became law, it would drastically increase the incentive for people to save and for so many, that is the single greatest source of money people have for their retirement. It would be dramatically depleted and slam the middle class. Outfront now, steven moore and former u. S. Labor secretary, robert reich. Are you disappointed . He said in a tweet, it is not on the table and no change and then today, he came out and goes maybe its on the table. You know, erin, im having a bit of a deja vu here because actually, i worked for reagan in the 80s and when we did the bipartisan tax reform, robert reich may remember that. One of the things that was on the table of discussion was to pull back on the iras in favor of lower tax rates. I think going after savings incentives is a bad idea. You know, 401 k s, you put the number 5 trillion. I think its closer to 7 trillion, erin, in terms of the amount of money americans have in these 401 k s. I cant resist saying the last week that robert reich and i were on, the people were saying oh, its only rich people with money in the stock market. No. When the stock market goes up, that 7 trillion, millions and millions of americans have money in the stock market when the stock market goes up, their 401 k plan depose up, so we should probably keep those. So you think hes wrong. I think what he said is, i interpret what he said as i am not personally in favor of getting rid of the 401 k s. But the house is putting a bill together and then that okay, even though two days ago on twitter, i said there will be no change to your 401 k . Look. Youre either a person of your word or youre not. But let me go to you, robert. How big of a hit would this be . To the middle class . Huge. 55 million americans depend on 401 k plans ifs their savings. And context, its important to understand that it used to be b that people had pensions. Mostly pensions through their employer and then we moved to something called defined contributi
