President elect donald trump heading back into Campaign Mode embarking on a thank you tour in swing states that won him the white house. Trump will hold a rally in cincinnati tonight after taking a victory lap in indiana, celebrating a deal with carrier to keep at least 1,000 manufacturing jobs from moving to mexico. Carrier offering limited details on terms of the deal run by trumps vp mike pence. This as trumps cabinet continues to take shape, the search for secretary of state narrowed down to these four candidates. You have to be very, very careful on conflicts of interest. Sooner or later this had to happen and i suspect hes probably not very happy about it, but just one of those things that had to be done. Trumps Transition Team telling us we probably wont hear any more personnel picks or cabinet picks this week, however, several names have emerged on a short list for director of national intelligence. They include senior indiana senator dan coats, as well as former Homeland Security adviser fran townsend, as well as admiral mike rogers. And another name that has surfaced, sarah paline. She has been mentioned for possible secretary of affairs. She would be happy to serve whether its in the public or private sector. Jessica, thank you very much for all of that. Lets discuss it now with Michael Smerconish and james briggs reporter for indi indianapolis star. He has been writing about those jobs saved at the carrier plant. James, i want to start with you because there are questions this morning. Everyone is excited, obviously, that the jobs. Those 1,000 jobs have been saved for indiana. In terms of what the incentives were that mike pence and donald trump may have offered carrier, what have you learned about that . Yeah, sources are telling us that this deal has a lot more to do with carriers Parent Company relationship with the federal government than it does with incentives. Utc the Parent Company is a federal contractor and does billions of dollars a year with the federal government and has exports that depend on the approval of the federal government. So, were hearing that that played a much bigger role than any incentives did. The state incentives from indiana were hearing are fairly in line with what the state does for other companies. Theyre not going to blow anyones mind when we finally hear the numbers today. This was much more about maintaining a strong relationship with the Incoming Trump administration. Michael, if you have that kind of leverage, why not use it. Absolutely. I think its great news. Lets give credit where credit is apparently due. Im not questioning it, im a little surprised because right now donald trump is without portfolio. What really can he promise . Maybe some executive action, but he cant make commitments on behalf of the congress and the house and the senate. I had anticipated that more would have come from governor pence. It would be very interesting to see the details when we know more about this. I would say its not often an air Conditioning Company gets this kind of good, free press for a number of days. That could be a little incentive there. What role do you know that governor pence played and why was donald trump able to make promises when he isnt yet in office . Well, a lot of people are pointing to the possible incentives that might be at play here. There are state incentives. But at the same time carrier gave up incentives when it decided to move to mexico. Paid back the city of indianapolis 1. 2 billion and i think i would be shocked to find out if they got that much money in incentives this time around. The state does not offer that kind of incentive, i think it will be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Carrier deciding to stay in indianapolis. Jamses, just to be clear, ths doesnt stop the hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs that left indiana since the year 2000. It doesnt stop the flow of economics, but, you know, it does give jobs to 1,000 people who would have lost them, correct . Absolutely. Hundreds of people who spent the last nine months thinking that they were going to lose their jobs and now finding out theyre going to keep them. You have to feel really good for those people. Obviously, that doesnt speak to the broader manufacturing sector. The theres still a lot of struggles there and i dont think that targeting one factory at a time with economic incentives is a Sustainable Economic Development strategy. Those hundreds of people will keep their jobs. You have to feel good for them. Michael, what big question do you want to have answered when donald trump goes to carrier today and does his victory tour later this evening . At what cost . I mean, it all comes down to the money. What is the Taxpayer Burden for maintaining those thousand jobs . Again, my glass is half full. Im thrilled to hear that 1,000 people will continue to be employed but what to extent is the taxpayers going to be funding directly those salaries. Thats the issue. Well find out if this is a longterm strategy that he carries out past january 20th or not. One thing well see tonight is the rally. A Campaign Rally in cincinnati. Da donald trump going to some of the states that flipped. What do you think well hear from him on that stage . His campaign events, you know, were these blistering attacks on Hillary Clinton and the status quo. You cant really attack any more when you now are the status quo. But, you know, john, i think much of what weve seen from president elect trump thus far is very similar to what we saw from candidate trump. Weve all given up awaiting the pivot. The pivot never came. He is what he is. Take a look at that twitter feed. I think youll see it carried out on stage tonight. He thrives on the adulation that he gets from those enormous crowds. He hasnt had that kind of a reception since election day and im sure he wants to go out and feel good about this achievement with regard to carrier. Probably talk about some of the picks he made and the way in which his government is coming together. And continue, frankly, to rally the hard core support that he has in half the country. James, what about your reporting in indiana. What are people looking for . Was this all about jobs . What are indiana voters hoping for now from president elect trump . Yeah. I think the Trump Supporters that ive talked to in the last few weeks have really talked about an economic message. People that even though the economy has been steadily producing jobs under president obama. People here say they just have not seen the results of that. They say they havent seen the kinds of jobs theyre looking for and theyre looking for more from donald trump. You know, michael, since alisyn is sitting right beside me but we just saw that fascinating interview that she did with New HampshireTrump Supporters. What they think of the transition and what theyre expecting from donald trump. What struck me is he has incredibly wide birth right now from these supporters who are willing, not necessarily to hold him to his Campaign Promises because they support him. I wonder what struck you from that interview. In a word that they were unflappable. There was nothing that alisyn could raise and nothing she could present to them that surrounds the president elect that was going to cause them to second guess their support. That is the exact same way those supporters were all throughout the course of the campaign. When donald trump said he could stand in the middle of fifth avenue and fire a gun and shoot somebody and still get elected, i think he was probably right with regard to those folks. The more troubling aspect for me is how theyre so reliant on fake news and how everybody today with a laptop and an Internet Connection regards themself as a journalist. Therefore, you can go out and you can find whatever news information youre looking for that reinforces the beliefs you already have. The irony, john, is that we never had so much choice in society among Media Outlets and yet people seem to be so limited in where they go for their news and information. Its almost pavlovian. Look, as journalists what we have to do, what were tasked with is following the thread of a story, maybe a story that sounds outrageous or unbelievable to the primary source. But as readers and as viewers, you dont have to do that. So, when something crops up on your Facebook Page sent to you and it is a fox Business News clip, you believe that. And thats what, as you heard, those Trump Supporters. They watched a report. They thought that president obama had said something that was later debunked, but they didnt follow those bread crumbs back to the original source. Thats what we do as journalists. But, as you know, thats not whats happening out there, michael. Not a day passes that i dont receive multiple emails usually with a subject line that says you must read this. And those that begin that way usually cause me to find out where the real truth lies. Many too many, maybe theyre busy, just tend to real the initial headline and accept it as gospel and, worse, share it with others. Gentlemen, thank you for sharing your reporting with us. Joining us now is congressman Brendan Boyle a democrat from pennsylvania who is on the House Committee of oversight and government reform. Good morning, congressman. Good morning. Good to be with you. You supported Nancy Pelosis opponent, tim ryan. Why do you think he didnt get more votes . Well, thats actually not exactly, not exactly correct. But i would say that did you, im sorry. Ill let you correct it. Who did you support . I voted for nancy pelosi. I think that the larger issue was some reforms that needed to take place in our caucus to make it more open and allow for more of an opportunity for some of us who are a little bit on the younger side of the spectrum to have a say in the direction. I think that were moving our way towards th that. But i also mentioned a couple weeks ago coming out of our first caucus election to confuse any one leadership election with something that is a much broader problem going back eight to ten years in our party. That is the tremendous challenge and decline that weve had among blue collar voters and blue collar americans. That was it tim ryans messa message. I have a large portion saying you supported tim ryan. Ill be firing someone right after that. I was elected to create jobs, please dont fire anyone. Fair enough. But that was his message. I mean, so, why do you believe that nancy pelosi, who as he pointed out has lost seats for democrats on her watch, why do you think that she is the voice of working class voters moving forward . I think that it would be a mistake to either look to one person to totally blame or look at one person as the complete solution. Its much more broad than that. For example, a younger colleague and i just formed something called the blue collar caucus as a way to try towards working on the specific anxiety issues of working class americans. The sort of family that i come from in a neighborhood that i still live in today. The fact is, this is the case in pennsylvania, ohio, michigan, wisconsin, throughout this country, even though the Unemployment Rate, the stated Unemployment Rate is pretty good, weve had a 20 to 30year period of complete stagnation among middle class americans. So, the idea that, frankly, both parties need to do a better job of paying attention to the hardpress working class in this country. Voters basically said in electing donald trump that they dont believe your party will help them and has their back. I tend to think that in this election they look, im still amazed that donald trump was elected. I did not support him. And very worried about some of the things he may bring about. However, democrats should take note that he stole what had been our message on infrastructure, jobs and also trade. Making sure these trade deals are actually fair for American Workers. And look out for American Workers first and wall street second. I think thats a message that our side needs to learn. Well, about that, thats interesting you say he stole your message. Lets zero in on infrastructure. Thats what president obama started with. He said there was going to be a stimulus bill and all these Shovel Ready Projects and you were going to work on infrastructure. Why is it that when donald trump said it, it resonated more and there wasnt the opposition and fight as there was when barack obama said it . Yeah, it is pretty remarkable. Some on the conservative side of the aisle who thought it was awful and terrible when president obama eight years ago proposed an infrastructure bill. Half of that money ended up being for tax cuts and not infrastructure. I wasnt here as a member but observing this. Today, we have somewhere between 1 and 1. 5 trillion worth of infrastructure needs that need to be met. Roads, bridges, transit and water and our electrical grid and gas lines in my city of philadelphia that date back to the 1800s. The fact that we have in donald trump a republican who is actually taking a more democratic position and there are democrats on my side of the aisle, including myself, who may disagree with him and vote against trump on a number of issues. But we have said we are willing to be bipartisan and work with him to vote on Real Infrastructure bill that rebuilds america. If he can bring along some of these conservative republicans who are saying how awful it was when obama was doing it will now support it just because its a republican president. Then thats their own hypocrisy. But i would rather have them ultimately voting for the right thing. I want to ask you because youre on the Oversight Committee, this letter that you took part in. Elijah cummings is leading it and sent it to Jason Chaffetz and you all are asking the chairman of the Oversight Committee to look into potential conflicts of interest of Donald Trumps.
