CNNW New Day Sunday January 24, 2016

To get anywhere on the roadways. There are sheets of ice under what was a very nice layer of 20 inches of snow. Clearly ready to trudge through the snow. As the scrapers scrape off the snow, they created a sheen below it. Thats a very dangerous place to walk. And, obviously, the cars are only going 15 to 20 miles per hour. If youre walking or not paying attention. As i was walking home from the live shot last night it was slick. Under where its been scraped theres just enough shine to create the ice down there. Its going to be a decent day today. Well have a lot of sunshine and snow blinding conditions in so many spots. The brightness of the snow is very high. When the sunshines off the snow, it will be right in your eye as your driving. Something else your eye is going to be the slop that comes off the roadways. Make sure your washer fluid bottle is filled today. Youll need it as the sunshine happens and starts to melt the stuff. Reporter as i look at the streets there, theyre not a one lane. This is not a normal street, clearly. Oh, yeah. Reporter this is a oneway street but were still down in the village and to the right here theres another vespa buried in. You have to be careful trying to dig these things out today. One big nick from a snow shovel and the Insurance Company wont like it. Its going to be an archaeological dig trying to get the cars out. All the snow has been piled to one side of the street and if you happened to park on the unfortunate side. You are not buried, youre double buried, martin. Reporter all right. I see traffic there. Especially on the other end of the street there starting to move along. Its quite clear. New york officials said that, yes, the travel ban is lifted, but if you dont have to go out dont go out. As chad is showing us quite well, it is not a typical kind of scene when driving through the streets of new york. Please, please be very careful. I want to show you another scene from the air. Dulles airport, of course, in the d. C. Area, and just lost that picture. You can just begin to see it looks like an incredible scene. Pretty much covered with tons and tons of snow there. Youre looking at it again. You can see that the crews that are working very hard. Theyre setting up the geysers of snow. They have the snow blowers going. Just look at that. And its like looking at a highway in colorado almost on a mountain pass. So clearly they have their work cut out for them today, which is why, even though the sun is out, people have to be aware that getting around not just snapping your fingers and goes back to normal. Theyve got on those roadways a lot they have to clear. Many of the airports, especially here in new york remained open. But that isnt to say that flights were coming and going. They were not. The operations were curtained or cut off completely by the airlines themselves. So this is the issues. Theyve got a long way to go when it comes to clearing not just the runways but consider the parking lots for everybody and theres going to be a huge backlog of people who are originally scheduled to go somewhere and now theyre not. So christi, ill hand it back to you. People have to be patient for some time. They are and, you know, this is coming at an interesting time. A lot of people need to get back to work. Things are looking at their to list it has to be done. Im wondering as were waiting to hear from Governor Cuomo, and we were saying that the elevated subway lines have been halted as well. Help people understand who do not live in new york how imperative those traffic patterns and those resources are to folks in the city. Reporter Public Transportation is essential to life in new york city. I mean, many people you have to have it. Simply because theres not room for vehicles and its a way of life. The fact that the subway is going and had continued even during the storm was a great blessing to people. They can still move about under ground. But youre right, they come tomorrow morning, the above rail, these are the people with the longer commutes that come in from the outlying areas they rely on that. Im waiting to hear what the governor has to say regarding that. So many people rely on it. Yet we know that, you know, with ice on the lines, the third rail getting covered. All those things have tremendous impacts. The streets are there but the last thing you want is everybody saying for i cant take the train im taking a car. That would be a nightmare of traffic. Thats why Public Transportation getting it back is key. Very good point. Thank you so much, martin. I want to get to Miguel Marquez live from baltimore. We saw him waist deep, i think, almost, yesterday. Hes clearly gotten out of that situation. Miguel, what is it like where you are now . Reporter it is snowy. You heard about the calm before the storm. This is like the simple gorgeousness after it. Look at downtown baltimore. We couldnt see across the harbor here yesterday at this time. Now it is a perfect, perfect view. Im going to show you the businesses along the way how they are piled with snow. The amount of snow around these businesses that has drifted on to them. Its incredible. But it looks just like a perfection this morning. Theyre meant to have a giant snowball fight here. It sound like baltimore may have broken a record in all of this. The most snow they ever got was in 2003, 26. 8 inches. The unofficial readings around town are close to that. Bwi broke a record south of the city they got 29. 5 inches. Broke the record by about 14 inches. So just a massive amount of storm. Now the clean up. Its going to be close to freezing today. Maybe just above. Maybe a little bit of melt. Close to freezing tomorrow as well. The plows are out there working. They lifted the stage three emergency procedure where all cars were banned from the roads. Now you can get back on the roads, if you have the proper vehicle. So far very quiet in baltimore. I think people enjoying their sunday. Its fortunate it was on a weekend. Were looking forward to a giant me ball fight right here. Please, dont invite people. You are going to get slammed. Somebody is going to see you where you are. Reporter i think ill be a giant target. Im predicting. I have the feeling you can defend yourself. Its all right. Thank you so much, miguel. We appreciate it. Lets go back to new york and jason carol is in central park. I saw you yesterday, jason, and it is snowing and its crazy. There were people all around you and they were laughing and having fun, and, you know, we have to remember its a serious situation. Fourteen people have died in this storm overall. However, where you are it looks like there are some people out there, yes . Reporter yeah, theres some people out here, but at least so far this morning theyre working. Were going to be seeing a lot of this throughout the day. People breaking out the shovels as the big dig gets underway as new yorkers wake up and get out of their homes. A lot of them will be heading out shoveling to get their cars and sidewalks. Christi, this is what were seeing all over the city. Buried cars, buried sidewalks. Fortunately the streets looking much better. The city getting a thumbs up from the people we spoke to about getting the salt spreaders out on the streets and the plows on the streets. The travel ban lifted just about an hour or so ago. Still slow moving out here. In terms of central park which is right up the street there breaking a record 26. 8 inches making it the second largest recorded snowstorm in new york citys history. Much talk about travel, and thats going a situation here in new york city today, whether youre aboveground or below ground. I was hearing you talking a little bit earlier about that. Trying to take the subway to work this morning, even though they are running below ground, youre looking at really serious delays. It at least 30 or 40 minutes on some of the lines. Allow extra time. In terms of the airports, again, still looking at massive delays there. So when the governor speaks later this morning, well be hearing, im sure, about that. Travel in the city trying to get around. It is slow going. The city, though, waking up to sunshine, clear streets, and a lot of work to dig out. Martin . Jason caroll, thank you very much. Still work to be done. We want to check on the rising waters. A. M. Was the time of high tide, or at least in the area. Morris sanchez has been keeping check for us. Reporter hey, martin. You may recall a half hour we spoke to you. It is not nearly as bad as it is now. The water continuing to come into the neighborhood rising and rising. Similar to yesterday. It pales in comparison. Yesterday we saw a foot if not more yesterday come over the edge and getting into residencrs here. I want to show you something peculiar. There are different elevations here. The street is somewhat dry in patches. The water inundating several parts of the street as we go down further east. Many of the side streets here in neighborhoods were totally flooded yesterday. It was very difficult to get through them, but today were dealing with only a couple of inches compared to that foot of water that we saw so quickly rush in. Very important to point out, flood watches are set to expire about noon today as the wind continues to shift from the storm. All of this very important to point out. Neighbors keep telling us is water coming from the bay. Its not ocean water that is being sprayed into the neighborhoods. Its a bay. This is going to continue happening as they continue getting storms in this area. One man we spoke to about every noreaster they see Something Like this. What made it especially worse yesterday was the fact we were dealing with the coincidence that the storm was coming in as there was full moon. The tide was extra high. Were within about a half hour or hour of real high tide on the bay. It comes in a little bit later than it does on the ocean side. Were watching and waiting. All right. Thank you so much for putting the context on that. Well continue to monitor the scene through you. Meanwhile, christi, its looking a lot better than 24 hours ago. If you remember, it was just a nightmare. Now the sun has returned and people are starting the job of reclaiming new york city for themselves. Its going to be a long, difficult process a lot of information yet to come from government officials. Thats right. Well hear from Governor Cuomo at 9 45. Hopefully youll get some answers there in new york about how theyre going to move forward, martin. Thank you. When we come back, i want to let you in on breaking news that were hearing overseas. A Turkish Airlines flight diverted from houston to ireland. Donald trump getting a lot of attention this morning. Were going to tell you what he said that has so many people in a tizzy. This is where i met your grandpa. Right under this tree. man some things are Worth Holding onto. Theyre hugging the tree. man thats why we got a subaru. Or was it that tree . man the twentysixteen subaru outback. Love. Its what makes a subaru, a subaru. Bleeding gums . You may think its a result of brushing too hard. Its not. Its a sign of early gum disease. Listerine r can help reverse. Early gum disease in just two weeks. Listerine r . Power to your mouth™ sometimes romantic. There were tears in my eyes. And tears in my eyes. And so many Little Things that we learned were really the biggest things. Through it all, we saved and had a retirement plan. Together, were building a better california. New this morning with just about a week to go until the first caucuses in iowa. The Des Moines Register has given the coveted public endorsement to marco rubio and democrat hillary clinton. Joining me live is mark priesten. Its interesting because all the paper interviewed all with the exception of donald trump and ted cruz and they both declined. Is that their way of trying to stay in the antiestablishment wing . Sure. No question in very unlikely you would have seen ted cruz or donald trump receive their endorsement. Ted cruz, in fact, last week the governor of iowa a republican said they shouldnt try to give iowa to ted cruz. He would rather see somebody else when the win republican nomination. To your point, theyre trying to show they are, in fact, the antiestablishment candidates. It has done them well in iowa. Lets talk about republican frontrunner donald trump. Hes feeling pretty confident about support for his campaign. Listen to what he said last night that has a lot of people talking this morning. My people are so smart. You know what else they say about my people . The polls . They say i have the most loyal people. Where i can stand in the middle of fifth avenue and shoot somebody and wouldnt lose any voters. Okay. Its incredible. So i spoke to senator rand paul about this. He said trump i want to quote it here, is almost delusional about his own power. One of the things he does say is that hes number one in the polls and his people are fiercely loyal to him. That cant necessarily be disputed, right . No, no doubt. I think you see donald trump, in many ways, tell you the truth. Hes said a lot of things probably even worse than that in some cases. He continues to, you know, gain support and grow support. We tried to ask him afterwards what he meant by the comments and he wouldnt say anything. He was criticized as well. You said rand paul criticized him. Glenn beck the well known conservative Network Owner endorsed ted cruz. He said donald trump shouldnt be president. Youre seeing the battle between ted cruz and donald trump here in iowa. All right. And lastly, lets talk about Michael Bloomberg considering an independent president ial bid with this. It made me think it would be the battle of the billionaires. According to forbes, mr. Bloomberg has nine times more wealth than donald trump does. Who benefits most, though . When you look at this. If bloomberg becomes an independent candidate, as they say would happen if it goes forward, who benefits most . Democrats, republicans, even split . I think it remains to be seen. It depends who the republican and democratic nominees get put up. The story was broken by the new york times. Theyre saying that bloomberg would spend a billion dollars to try to win as an independent. An independent has never won in the united states. Its been a party nominee. Trump yesterday when he was asked about bloomberg said he likes mike and hes a friend but they have different viewpoints on some of the major issues, particularly on gun control. He said he would welcome a bloomberg candidacy. According to reports cnn has confirmed them is that bloomberg would get into the race if donald trump and Bernie Sanders were the nominees. If it was hillary clinton, maybe somebody else in the republican side he wouldnt. Bloomberg is definitely an interesting individual. Once a democrat, became a republican when he ran for governor of new york. Then in his third term in new york he did something a lot of people had never done, actually, in bloomberg ran the city of new york city. If he were to run that would throw the race that is already in chaos now even into further turmoil and it would be interesting heading into november. As though its not interesting enough at this point. Its an unconventional run that weve seen so far. Mark preston, good to see you. I want to get to you the breaking news that is happening overseas of the Turkish Airlines flight diverted from houston is where it took off. It was supposed to go to istanbul. It was diverted to ireland because of some sort of threat. We have a live report for you. Stay close. First, cnn Stefanie Elam as a preview for this years sun dance Film Festival for us. Xarelto® is also proven to reduce the risk of stroke in people with afib, not caused by a heart valve problem. For people with afib currently well managed on warfarin, there is limited information on how xarelto® and warfarin compare in reducing the risk of stroke. You know, taking warfarin, i had to deal with that blood testing routine. I couldnt have a healthy salad whenever i wanted. I found another way. Yeah, treatment with xarelto®. Hey, safety first. Like all blood thinners, dont stop taking xarelto® without talking to your doctor, as this may increase your risk of a blood clot or stroke. While taking, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer for bleeding to stop. Xarelto® may increase your r
