Theres a chad of another damageling water today. Ill be speaking with or correspondents and analysts have full coverage. I want to begin in Southern California. We have sara sidner in our los angeles bureau. What are you hearing . What are you seeing . We have heard in ridgecrest there are two house fires, gas lines ruptured. The hospital has evacuated about 50 people there, very important part of the community. Theyre dealing with evacuations, and emergency crews are getting more calls than they can handle. They are, though, working on dealing with this issue now this was not just felt in ridgecrest, but as far away as los angeles, and las vegas, which is actually closer to ridgecrest, they also felt it quite strongly. Since then there have been more than 70 aftershocks that people are dealing with, and this is as people are always dealing with damages, we are also hearing that there have been injuries, and they are trying to get to people who have been injured due to this earthquake. So a lot going on, as people try and understand and deal with the fact they are going to be dealing with these rolling aftershocks for at least a couple days, maybe three. They have become less and less over time, but certainly scary officer the folks. We are hearing of no damage, no injuries, that is the good news, but in places lie san bernardino, they are talking about some cracks in some buildings there, and somes so definitely theres damage. The emergency crews are dealing with it. They are opening up some Emergency Centers and there are shelter open for people, too. Power lines are down. Its upwards of 100 degrees in that area. People need to stay safe, but theyre also handling the fact there are this is aftershocks that keep rolling through. There may be no damage in l. A. , but theres certainly frayed nerves. As a Southern Californian, you love there, this suddenness can be scary. There was a question about an alert system that would alert people. Thats right. The shake alert l. A. , i had the app as soon as the city announced it was there. Its supposed to tell you seconds before, sometimes up to a minute before you constitutionally feel the water that it is coming and to take cover. In this particular instance you had a 6. 4. Here in last it was somewhere around a 4. 5 according to seismologists. That was not enough to trigger the app. The settingings are they have ton a 5 or higher, now they have decided, after hearing from a lot of people, they wants to know any , and we hear you, and we are changing the settings so it will alert you if its a 5 magnitude or less. Brianna . Thank you, sara. Cnns nick watt has just arrived on sea at ridgecrest. Tell us what youre seeing, knick . Well e. Were outside the Ridgecrest Hospital which has been evacuated as think says structural damage. We are out in the desert. Its up in 90 degrees. Thats an issue for patients. They are trying to get them in structures nearby. We have just driven through the town, went through a liquor store, they lost power a lot of bottles have fallen off the shelves. One patient is being brought in with what looks like a twisted ankle. Were told there are power lines down. The assessment of the damage is still going on, but so far just and the Authorities Say they are confident that they will get a handle on the situation, but of course the issue is the fear of thoughts aftershocks. An youve been reporting more than 80 since this hit this morning. We are told by seismologists at cal tex theres a percentage of an afterhost of 5. 0 or more. As sara said ner has been mentioning before, were about 1250 miles away from los angeles here, this town of about 30,000 people, lower buildings, no high rises weve been told there are reports of damage in one hotel at least, but theres also another smaller town, which is down on a dry lakebed, actually closer to the actual epicenter they were telling you the way this earthquake happened all the way to the coast were going to try to reestablish nicks signal there. Were having some transmission problems. I want to go what are you tracking, tom . Well, this has been a pretty interesting day. Obviously a 6. 4 magnitude is pretty strong so it is more shallow, the more shaking. At 10 05 we had a 4. 0, thats considered an aftershock. 22 Million People felt something, but no one felt the top of the list, which is an extreme. No one felt violent shaking or very strong. All this is lines here, these are newer faults. There are many more smaller ones, but dr. Lucy jones told us a couple interesting things, he is ridge 2k7 crest where 30,000 people live. The way this is fracturing here, whens initial energy was released, it was five seconds of energy, you at that on to the reverberations and waving moving outward, the problem is it store what we call the it was about a tenmile rip along the fault. So the energy rides that faultline. If not all the in is released typically youll have a number of aftershocks, but the number now is over 85. This says theres still a lot of energy to be released, and to be quite honest, im never seen quite this many in a short amount of time. Heres our concern, and this graphic we use on every different time of magnitude and theyre pretty accurate. 5. 4 or greater, we have not had that aftershock yet. A structure if compromised already, may create more damage or gas leaks. This is what dr. Lucy jones said could happen today. Now, 4. 4 or higher, we can have ten. I can tell you wield most of the activity has been in the 2. 0 to 4. 0 range. Were counting them every couple minutes, but here is ridgecrest, 30,000, there are some other communities that surround this, so say a good 42,000 felt very strong shaking. Weve had records of mobile homes off their founds, big rigs tipped over. Orange did orange is whats happened today, red is the last last. So were seeing two flanks, if this activity continues, its clo moving closer and closer. The other issue is moving up in areas to the northwest this is a close are region around Death Valley National park one more thing. The ridgecrest is here. It goes all the way out to where theres some weak shaking in fresno, l. A. , long beach, all the way out to las vegas, but 42,000 feeling very strong shaking. That is a concern, but 21 million felt light shaking. Thats the low frequency energy, the rolling frequency, those are the ones that move out far, and give you that rolling motion. Were not out of this just yet. Is it possible we could have a quake thats stronger than the 6. 4 . Yes, we see this sometimes around the globe evening though you had a foreshock, if theres enough energy still in there, we have seen at tames make two out of ten times we could get something stronger if that happens, that becomes the quake and the 6 if the 4 is a foreshock. The good news is were not seeing any for a at all times even though the usgs gave us a green pager, this is what you said to see, but the economic losses, dana could be significant. We have a 35 chance that main 10 to 1 hundred million worst of damage. Right now the inspection process i think could take weeks if youre looking at every road, bridge, school, hospital, you make it. Again that 5. 4 is each seen it a couple days later as well in some cases. Its going to rattle some nerves. Theyre going to have to be very vigilant. Weve been talking to a geocity cyst with usgs, and paul caruso in golden, colorado, he said we expect the aftershocks to continue for a couple weeks. And like to your point, tom, he said theyve been occurring so fast hes having trouble keeping count. In the last 15 minutes where we had spoken to him, there were five earthquakes alone. Is there anything to deduce from that . A couple years ago, there is a network in italy, they were mountain out, but whether you have this many, and again i havent seen this earthquake where the swarm is afterwards it happens, but they do taper off over time. We could see these for months. We see it in indonesia, sometimes for days or weeks. Even back in the 80s when we had smaller activity, you can see this. What i think is interesting more than just how much well see later is the activity that was being reported on the last 2 1 2 to 3 weeks there have been stories written, were seeing some swarms here, something a typically a higher number, could this lead to Something Else . You just never know. But again, that 5. 4 or greater aftershock, ive seen it on every equal that we have covered around the world, almost always does happen, depending on how strong that quake is that would be enough to create more damage. All right. Tom, thank you so much. President trump has briefed on this big quake. I want to go live to the white house. Ref our chief correspondent jim acosta on the north lawn. Tell us more. The president has briefed as would normally take place. We can future the president s tweet up on the screen. Media crews are arriving at varies locations to assess whats going on on the there. We should also point out the president and governor, gave newsom, have not had the best of relations at times, sparred over the federal response to the wildfires in california, but were waiting to find out if theyll get on the phone at some point. Brianna, were talking about all this when the president was supposed to be gearing up to go to the National Mall and deliver remarks this patriotic display that he and his officials have thrown together. From this point from what we understand, the program has been delayed down there per an announcement to people on the scene down there, but i talked to white house official over here, who sid the president still plans to deliver his remarking down on the mall, and they have released some of those excerpts to reporters. As you know, brianna, theres have i big thunderstorms moving through the washington, d. C. Area right now. It looks as though the weather may have delayed the president s point. Thanks for the ridealong, captain ive never been in one of these before, even though geico has been ohhh. Ooh ohh here we go, here we go. You got cut off there, what were you saying . Oooo. Oh no no. Maybe that geico has been proudly serving the military for over 75 years . Is that what you wanted to say . Mhmmm. I have to say, you seemed a lot chattier on tv. Geico. Proudly serving the military for over 75 years. You ok back there, buddy . Glue were following breaking news rocking southern cal. The quake was centered near ridgecrest, which is about 150 miles from los angeles. Joining me now is democratic congresswoman nanette baragan, you represent an area south of los angeles, so i know you did not field this earthquake personally, but you said your mother, who lives slightly north of you did feel it. What are you hearing . Were hearing it was more of a shanking, and they said they felt it, but didnt feel it very strongly where i am in south los angeles. Not hearing too many roberts, certainly havent heard any damage reports. What does the responsibility look like . Do you have anything to compare this to . I certainly felt a number of earthquake. It is a good reminder to tell people to have a plan, be ready for an earthquake, because in california we can have one at any time. So we have our thoughts out with the first responders, and make sure people are prepared for the aftershocks that will follow. The president tweeted hes been briefed on this. The president and governor have not always been on the best of terms. Are you confident that any sort of federal response will be satisfied . I am. Weve had hearings on this on the very issue. Beyond the president who puts these tweets out, folks we have worked with have been very cooperative and saying the state of california will get the funding necessary in emergency situations, and im comfortable with that. A lot of people who have not been through an earthquake, which is something unique to california and to the west coast, they dont know that even though there is an earthquake it isnt all over. Theres still some frayed nerves, still a question of whether Something Else is going to happen. Is that concerning californians . Absolutely. Its very scary when, you dont know what to do, some people run outside. Thats not the thing to do. Youre supposed to take cover, go ahead until a sturdy table, but certainly when you feel the aftershock, you wonder if this will be bigger, so it is a concern how big is a concern this would be bigger. The talk was when is the big one going to be . It seems like the chance of this happening is maul, but its not zero. How concerned are people i think the more earthquakes that you have in smaller numbers, they say the less likely youll have a really big one. To some degree when i see these happen at 5 and 6, i feel less concern we are going to see a very big one. Whats your message to fellow californians . First, be ready, have a plan with your family. If theres an earthquake, where do you meet . Who do you call . Make sure youre prepared with food and water. Its very critical. Go about your daily lives today. Enjoy the fourth, have a good time, but be prepared . Case of an emergency. I want to ask you about the warning system. The usgs said it worked correctly, but the threshold was set at a different level. Do you see think the threshold needs to be lowered . Absolutely. The question is, where do you set it . We do have a lot of smaller shakes here. Do you want it constantly going off and, you know, causen some concern . But sometimes we forget what a 4 or 5 feels like. If were hearing an overwhelming number saying they want it decreased, i think its a good idea. I would rather by safe than sorry. Congresswoman, thank you so much. So stay with us. We have more ahead on this earthquake. This has been followed by dozens and dozens of aftershocks. When is the shaking going to end . Its going to be a while. Hey, who are you . Oh, hey jeff, im a car thief. What . im here to steal your car because, well, thats my job. What . What . . What . laughing what . . What . what . [crash] what . haha, it happens. Awesome. Id rather not. Breaks news a 6. 4 earthquake in Southern California, this has been followed by at least 159 aftershocks. A state of emergency has been declared in ridgecrest, which is the desert town which is near the quakes epicenter. I want to do go sara sidner, shes been following this in los angeles from the moment it happened. Bring us up to speed. This many aftershocks, this is elevated. Reporter yeah, its significant. There are always aftershocks after this kind of a moderately large earthquake. 6. 4 is nothing to sneeze after. There were a couple hours fights wes know of the president hospital evacuated about 15 patients, and there are people calling in with injuries. Away from the epicenter less so. Here in los angeles where you have a population of more than 10 Million People, no injuries, no damage that has been reported at this point. We all, though, certainly felt it. You could feel or building 15 floors high. You cant feel it sway. It went on for several seconds, one of the longest ones ive felt. Ive only been here five years, but folks i work with have been here all their lives and they said they hadnt full one that long. But in ridgecrest, you know, there is a great of concern because of the aftershocks. Not only have people had to deal with the 6. 4, which really first gave them a joel and they could feel that rolling feeling, where one person could see the floor buckling, rolling. Now theyre dealing with the aftershocks as theyre trying to assess the damages. We know stores have had plenty of things flying off the shelves. We know that the phone lines have been problematic, because everybody is on the phone trying to talk or get help, trying to check on their neighbors, for example. One things authorities have been saying is police dot not call 1 911 unless theres an actual emergency. There is a Technology Available to alert of to a earthquake, but it did not go off. To let you know, they are changing the set eggs on the app. Joining me by phone is kimberly washburn, she was directing a childrens july 4th program. Kimberly, thanks for talking to us. Thank you for having me. You were pretty close to the epicenter. We can see from the video, it was a scary moment. I want to pause and listen to this. [ screaming ] kimberly, this is the moment. The kids were on stage theyre adorable, by the way, performing, and then this sort of collective scare that they had. Tell us what this felt like. Yes, it was terrifying. I was down there by the stage directing them. We had 65
