Transcripts For CNNW The Lead With Jake Tapper 20200302

Administration that might be adding to the confusion. This is cnn breaking news. Welcome to the lead. Im jake tapper. Two breaking stories. The dow jones is closing up almost 1,300 points and rebounding in a major way after the plunge. And in the 2020 lead, and then there were five. Senator Amy Klobuchar is the latest to drop out of the 2020 race and according to sources both klobuchar and former south bend, indiana, mayor Pete Buttigieg are going to offer their endorsements for one man joe biden at a biden rally in dallas, texas. It is not just klobuchar and buttigieg backing him. It is a whole bunch of democratic figures ranging from harry reid to susan rice all coalescing behind biden which sanders was asked about today. Are you concerned about the consolidation behind biden . Look, it is no secret that the Washington Post is doing 1,500 articles on it. And that is no secret. And the corporate establishment is coming together, and the political establishment is coming together and they will do everything. They are really getting nervous that the working people are standing up. The calling of the candidate herd coming ahead of the biggest test yet for the president ial candidates with 14 states and america samoa all voting in the primaries as ryan nobles is reporting from klobuchars home state of minnesota. Reporter with only a few hours until super tuesday, another shakeup in the democratic primary race. Remember, what unites us is bigger than what divides us. Reporter senator klobuchar ending her 2020 campaign and endorsing Vice President joe biden tonight at a rally in dallas, texas. And also in dallas to throw his support behind biden is Pete Buttigieg who dropped his bid sunday night. Our goal always has been to help unify americans to defeat donald trump and to win the era for our values. And so we must recognize that at this point in the race, the best way to keep faith with those goals and ideals is to step aside and help bring our party and our country together. As the moderate lane in the primary shrinks, sanders saying he is ready for the challenge. The political establishment is coming together, and that i will do everything. They are really getting nervous. Reporter the vermont senator is hoping for a showing tomorrow to show insurmountable advantage. We will defeat the most dangerous president in modern american history. Reporter with 14 states and more than 1,300 delegates up for grabs, the 2020 contenders fanning out across the country today. Biden in texas. Sanders making stops in utah and minnesota, and Elizabeth Warren in california and Mike Bloomberg in virginia. The former mayor remains a wild card having spent more than half a billion of his own money in the race. If they say why vote for bloomberg. Two reasons. One, he can do the job. Two, he can beat trump. And more now on Amy Klobuchars calculation and the reason she decided to get out of the race now, and the sources are telling our kyung lah that it is time for the party to unify and unify specifically against Bernie Sanders. While there is an argument to be made to a longterm advantage, there is a shortterm advantage for sanders because he has a real shot of winning in minnesota and one of the reasons that he is going to be behind me tonight. And ryan nobles in the land of 10,000 lakes. Appreciate it. Lets chat about it. Governor grand ho homholgranhol give an endorsement, but do you see this boosting his chances in minnesota tuesday . Yes, and it is not the democratic establishment which Bernie Sanders says with a tinge, but it is people who want to beat trump and wanting somebody who is selfdescribed as a socialist not to have the ability to beat him. That is what it is all about. And what are you laughing about . I was just going to be quiet. But it is true. And so it is going to help. You are praising how sanders was spinning or reacting to the news. Listen, listen, i participated in a Similar Campaign in 2016. You know how many of those were called the never trumpers and you now have never berniers. Well, if he is the nominee, you will support him . Yes. It is effectively done, and it is seen as truthful hyperbole what bernie was doing and 18 articles in the Washington Post against me, and i have heard somebody else talk like that. And there are differences between now and 2016 on the republican side, and one is tawa co co co cowaless coalescence quite rapidly. Yes. And not the way it happened in 2016. And the way that the delegates are awarded that everybody is going to get some and everybody is going to get a participation ribbon if they get 15 which is harder to get to the majority, and so that is the whole game right now. How many delegates can Bernie Sanders amass and how close is joe biden to him if the race is close. I think that you will see a convention at which biden could emerge as the nominee, and if Bernie Sanders racks up a big number and comes close no 1991, it is going to be a difficult to take the nomination away from him. And two theories of the case as to why sanders is more electable versus biden and sanders says he is going to get out the young people, and the working class voters and the alienated people who traditionally dont vote and his crowds are huge, the biggest on the democratic side. And biden says they will keep the suburbs and the win over the disaffected republicans. And i am not sure that one is stronger than the other. And who knows what the electorate is going to do come 2020, and you can see the moderates bidding on biden and the poll numbers are stronger if you are looking at the headtohead matchups with him and donald trump, and most of the polls show sanders and biden beating donald trump, but biden tends the do a little better, and there is worry that this label democratic socialist does push away people in the middle, the College Educated white women for instance who is key to any democrat trying to win. And the other thing is that sanders has not necessarily made good on what he said that he could do with the electorate which is to draw out huge numbers of additional voters in the different states which is weakening the case a little bit. I wanted to jump on this point, because it is really important. There was a 40,000person study out of yale and berkeley, and what the academics found was that if you nominate someone who is closer to the fringe, the further left or right, that obviously the people in the middle dont come out that much. So that means that you have to make up a huge amount of young people or this burgeoning amount of turnout, and what they have predicted is that the young people would have to turn out in the 54 . It has never happened in history. 54 youthful turnout, and barack obama had the highest in history and his was 48 , and that kind of number is what people on the democratic side look like and look at when they say, lets consolidate. And talk to George Mcgovern about relying on the young voters. Nobody is talking about bloomberg and i heard in the clip of the two reasons that he articulate and none of them was excitement about his candidacy, and will he stay in or get out . That is a big deal tomorrow. If bloomberg is significantly behind biden, he has to have a conversation with the team on wednesday of what is the point to move forward and if they are closer, a murkier area and harder for him to pull out or persuade himself that it is time to go. We will keep thup conver sangsd tune into the cnn special this evening of the primetime special with all of the remaining president ial candidates are sitting down exclusively with cnn less than 24 hours of super tuesday. So far what is left is Bernie Sanders, and former Vice President joe biden and Elizabeth Warren and mayor Mike Bloomberg. And that is at 8 00 p. M. Eastern on cnn. And bloomberg is betting big on super tuesday dai, and so who m he help or hurt tomorrow . And also, what is the government trying to do to contain the novel coronavirus. Stay with us. Tomorrow marks the first time that Michael Bloomberg has ever been on a democratic primary ballot because of the threeterm new york city mayor won twice as a republican and once as an independent before deciding to run for president as a democrat. Jeff zeleny says that his record is a frequent point of attack from the democratic rivals. Reporter Michael Bloomberg is Still Standing after the democratic rivals fell one by one. I felt sorry for them, but i am in it to win it, and we are going to go out and get them. Reporter bloomberg is hours away from the first test for super tuesday and not just the first president ial campaign, but whether the democrats are going to accept him as one of their own. And we can disagree from both sides of the aisle without personal attacks. Er that w that was bloomberg lobby i lobbying aipac. And so can a Onetime Republican turned independent mayor of new york be trusted as a democrat . If the democrats want a nominee who is a democrat, a lifelong democrat, then join us. Reporter joe biden was talking about Bernie Sanders, a vermont independent, but also lumping bloomberg into the democrat come lately camp, and bloomberg has explained his past. I come from massachusetts where there are no republicans and i was a democrat for sure. I moved to new york city where there are no republicans and i was a democrat there. And he has spoken for his credentials. I spoke for Hillary Clinton at the Dnc Convention in 2016. Reporter and that is true, but he also endorsed george w. Bush the election previously. We will assure that george w. Bush will have a second term. Reporter and he is also with gun friendly legislation, and then helping the democrats win the control of the house, and this is not erasing the suspicion of whether he is a democratic by conviction or opportunity. The core of the Democratic Party will never trust him. Reporter and bloomberg pushes aside the criticism saying he has puts a side his money and backs his beliefs. You would say that all democrats are liberal democratic policies. Reporter the democratic voters will have the final say on this starting tomorrow on super tuesday where he is going to be in florida on three stops and looking down the calendar at the florida primary, and it is a question if he is going to be in the race by then, but the aides concede they will reanalyze the day after super tuesday. Jeff zeleny, thank you so much. And now, knee niamalika, this what he said about the possibility of dropping out of the race if he does not do well tomorrow super tuesday. If you dont finish in the top three on super tuesday, is that it for you . No, of course not. You will keep going . Sure. There are elections seven or so days later and another one 14 days later, and a number of elections after that. It is true that there are three super tuesdays in a row start tomorrow, but if he does not finish in the top three, what is the actual reason to stay in the race . He has been banking it, 400 million all on super tuesday and banking on the idea that joe biden would be weak and that is why he got into the race, and joe biden had a very, very strong showing out of South Carolina. You can see that the moderates are coalescing around him, and the idea that he is coming out of super tuesday, and we will see how many delegates he gets and where does he get the 15 in the 14 states and 16 contests altogether, but the rational for moving forward does not seem to be there and the ultimate rationale is to beat donald trump. Does he think that he can beat donald trump or see somebody in the field like joe biden who is more likely to beat donald trump and is he ultimately standing in the way by staying in the race. And from all of the data and you can speak to this, but it seems that the bloomberg support is coming right from biden, and the sort of the white voters and so, you know, staying in only hurts biden. Well, you put your finger right on it. They had a strategy and the strategy is that biden who was looking weak at the time they got into the race would not make it through four primaries and the South Carolina firewall would not hold, and that bloomberg could pick up the pieces on super tuesday and become the challenger to Bernie Sanders in this race. Obviously, that did not works because joend ca biden came roa out of South Carolina and he is going to get a bounce and could be big bounce and just as the votes that bloomberg are getting coming from biden, the votes from biden are coming from bloomberg and so bloomberg could be much less well on super tuesday than the plans made him. And you know what would make him enormously popular with democrats is if he gets out and continues to spend, because he makes 107 million day just by breathing. He has so much money, democrats would be welcoming to that. And he is able to spend on ads and President Trump is afraid of that . I talked to the president about the candidates in the race. He is ready for all comers and obviously, 50 billion is something to be concerned about if you are any political operative and it is going to buy you a lot of tv and not love or charisma or the things that you can talk about, but what is important is not only the delta between bernie and biden and delegates, but also the Biden Bloomberg delta. If it is not that big, there is not a case for him to get out. I think that bloomberg thinks that if there is a brokered convention, why not me . I have enough money to force to the convention and gathering up the delegates and close to biden and i will make the case to be the candidate and not biden, and that is my take. And there is a commemoration in selma, alabama, of bloody sunday and bloomberg spoke there and a number of the africanamericans turned their backs to him as he spoke at the church. And now, listen to what he said about the record in new york. When i left, it is fair to say that most itiesl would say best 12 years that the city has in modern memory. And stop and frisk is a potent issue, but there is one poll that had him with the 60 approval with africanamericans in new york city. Yes, in new york city. And he has done himself good with a lot of the ads with the africanameric africanamericans and the criminal justice advocates and Small Business owners as well, but he ran into Elizabeth Warren in the debates, and he did not do so well in terms of the record of stop and frisk and he essentially lied about the record and said that he was moving to stop it, but he was forced to stop it, and then he defended it until recently getting on the race. And the record on women, and lots of lawsuits against him. And so we will see, i think that he came in as somebody who was very interesting to the africanamericans and seemed to be a different person presented on the ads and then the information coming out. And something as someone who made ads for a living for many, many years. There is a limit to them. They can create i
