Died down a lot. If you look behind me, you can see l. A. County sheriffs deputies are right near the compton sheriffs substation. Their adviser are up. While some of them have fingers on their trigger guards of their guns, this is a lot less dangerous than what we saw not lo long ago. The demonstrators and the departmentties a different set were face to face. And the next thing you know rubber bullets started flying. Some sort of pupper spray was sent into the air. This began as a march about four miles almost. They are protesting the death of an 18yearold who was shot an an auto body shop. He was basically work iing ther as a security guard. Police said and the term he used was for an investigation. Tensions extremely high here in compton earlier. Its died down now, but this is important. There were about 3,000 people at the demonstration earlier. It was completely peaceful and they marched through the streets and then end iing up here in compton. Right now, the protest is slowly winding down, wolf. Lets hope it does. Lets hope its peaceful. We want to see anymore violence. Thank you very much. In the meantime, the white house is dealing with a fallout from last Nights Campaign rally for President Trump. The president is expected big crowds, but they got a crowd that the Fire Department e estimated at about 6,200 people. That number was disputed by the trump campaign. Kristen holmes is joining us from the white house. White house officials today find themselves once again defending remarks by the president that last night this time his suggestion that he wanted to actually slow testing for coronavirus. Tell us about that. Administration officials spent the day cleaning that up. They started on saturday night. We heard from a Senior Administration official who said that President Trump was obviously joking. And earlier today in an interview with jake tapper, Peter Navorro doubled down on that narrative. I want to point one thing out. This is not the first time they have used this that as a defense. That the president was joke whg he says something highly controversial. However, given the timing of this, they are receiving a lot of black lash. We are at a time where were nearing 120,000 deaths from coronavirus. Here you have the white house top official saying that it was just a light hearted joke. Take a listen. It was tongue and cheek. He has said several things for months. He said similar things for months. But 30 Million People unemployed and we have seen over 100,000 people die because of the wuhan virus. Its confusing why President Trump would bring up testing at all. As we covered for the last several months, one of the biggest points of criticism in the Trump Administrations response has been all of the problems that we have seen with testing. Now its clear this is giving fuel to adversaries who have been saying this since the beginning of the pandemic. They have been arguing that President Trump cares more about his appearance, meaning lower test numbers here, lower case numbers here in our country, than he does about keeping americans safe. Its no surprise were hearing from democrats, already hearing that joe biden is going to be using this little snippet and getting this on the air waves as part of their narrative as they move forward towards november. Kristen holmes at the white house for us, thank you. Texas is one of the several states seeing a disturbing uptick in new cases of coronavirus. Austin, texas, maybe one of the hottest hot spots in the state. Saturday alone, Health Officials reported a another Record Number of newly confirmed cases. It was the third time in a week. Heres one possible reason from an austin bar shows no compliance with safety distancing regulations. They have had their alcoholic beverage licenses suspended for violating state protocols. The austin mayor is joining us right now. May your, thank you so much for joining us. You say austin residents are now three times as likely to catch the virus as they were just two weeks ago. Tell us about that. We have a lot more people with the virus Walking Around our city right now. Some of the people probably know it because they have symptoms, but many people are probably asymptomatic. Our numbers are going up. Youre right. We set another record on saturday night. They announce d the numbers for stoed. We went across 500. Thats yet another record. And i understand that when you look at cities across the country right now, at the biggest decreases in doubling time, theres the rate at which the number of cases doubles, texas has four of the top ten cities in the country right now with decreases in that doubling rate. You issued an order on wednesday mandating that all businesses come up with a specific plan to require face masks. That means all employees and voisitors. Are are you seeing acceptable compliance. We are. It doesnt go into effect on tuesday, but just announcing that it was going to be required sends the message to the community that this is real and serious. Back a month and a half ago, it was required in the city. And masks were something that people were utilizing. We were stopped being able to do that by the governors order. And i think that while the governor still encourages everyone to wear masks, by making it so that the cities couldnt enforce it or making it appear that way, it sent the message to our community that maybe this virus thing was over. So just being able to have that again is changing behaviors in the city and it needs to. Thats encouraging. The mayors of phoenix and miami here in the situation room today, i wonder if the same thing is happening in austin, right now. Da ta is showing that its skewing younger. People in their 20s and 30s, apparently, are at increased risk. Is that happening in austin . If it is, why do you think thats developing right now . That people in their 20s and 30s are coming down with coronavirus in bigger numbers than earlier anticipated. That could easily be here as well. And i think its because kind of in the generational kind of way. Theres a whole generation, a whole age group that at this point probably believes that if they caught the virus, it couldnt be that bad. It would recover quickly. The problem is that even folks in that age group, if they are not the ones that are going to end up in the hospital, the more people Walking Around with infection, the more likely somebody is going to get it who then goes home and hug theirs grandmother. So that highwaysmessage we haven successful in getting out. I hope now with the new orders that we have been gotten the power to put back into place, were going to send that message. The state of texas mayor reopened too quickly. When the governor started reopening and then started letting restaurants to afterincreasing capacity, i wish he had done it more slowly so we could have seen the numbers with each one of the phases before we moved on to the next phase. We have now moved into three different phases and were seeing the numbers really from the first phase. And they are shocking. The numbers are going up so rapidly. So i wish we had done this more sl slowly so we could have seen the data along the way. Mayor, good luck to you and everybody in austin, texas. You have a great city over there. We will certainly stay in touch with you. Appreciate you joining us. Absolutely, thank you. The president and some in his circle would like you to think the pandemic is actually dying out. But clearly it isnt. New cases are spiking as we have been reporting across 23 states right now. As we near 120,000 dead americans tonight, new cdc guidelines are predicting over 135,000 americans maybe as many as 145,000 americans will lose their lives to coronavirus by july 11th. With those numbers, what those numbers mean, when we come back. G to figure out whats gonna happen next in the market, can i get rich quick . , companies are saying we dont know how we are going to be doing in the next couple of months. The i cdc now says up to 145,000 americans could die from coronavirus over the next three weeks by july 11th. The virus is now surging in 23 states with more cases reported last week. This week than last week. Ten states shave seen a jump of 50 or more. Dr. Rentee, doctors in texas and florida among other states are seeing really surging numbers in those states. How troubling is all of this right now . Wolf, this is quite troubling. This is what many of us were worried about back early may when these states started opening up before they were see seeing decreasing case can coun counts. The increase says more people being tested are positive as a percent and the most recent thing is the increased number of hospitalizations. Theres a lag between testing positive, being hospitalized and daets. And as we see hospitalizations climb, deaths are not far behind. The president said children are doing better against the virus and schools should reopen and reopen quickly. Listen to this. New jersey was heavily hit. Thousands of people. He said with thousands of people that died, thousands of people. There was only one person that died under the age of 18. Would you believe that . Which tell mess one thing, that kids are much stronger than us. When you see a little kid running around, say, boy, oh, boy you have a great immune system. How about a piece of your immune system. They dont even know about this. Lets open the schools please. So is the president right about people under 18 and that schools should reopen and reopen right away . F this is a question that parents and teachers across the country are struggling with. We all want to see our kids go back to school. We want to see them educated. We want to go to work without worrying whether they are being taken care of. But we are trying to balance danger to the kids and the teachers and the larger community. The evidence is still out. Some suggest they dont catch as frequently as adults. Certainly, they dont generally get as sick, but theres other evidence from some countries suggest figure you open too early without adequate physical distancing, the schools can turn into super spreader events that infect an entire community. So over the course of the summer, youll see more evidence and teachers and parents working together to try to figure out the best things for communities. Were actually seeing more people in their 20s and 30s, especially in the southern states, testing positive for the coronavirus right now. What do you think is behind this increase . I think its because were seeing people going out. They are going to bars. They are going to parties. They are going to large indoor spaces and spending time with each other where they are likely to transmit infections from one person to another. So i think it reflects personal habits as well as increases in testing. The the worry is that those folks are at risk for getting sick. And certainly, can spread the disease to others to their parents torks older members of the community. And thats whats worrisome to those in Public Health and medicine. If they dont get sick, they are going to spread it to high risk. If if they are asymptomatic, they can spill stil spread the virus. If they are asymptomatic, the time of greatest infection, the most likely to spread the virus is in the one to three days before you get symptoms. And theres studies that say people who never get symptoms can still spread the virus thats why wearing the mask, the physical distancing and hand washing are so critical. You cant know at any particular moment if you might be infected and not have symptoms. And so its important for you to keep other people in your Community Safe and for us to keep ourselves safe from people around us who might be infected and not know it.
