You probably remember the story because his girlfriend Diamond Reynolds streamed it on Facebook Live and the officer went to trial for manslaughter and on friday the jury reached a decision. A verdict in a case that caused national outrage, tonight a Police Officer aquid on all charges in the shooting death of a black man after a traffic stop. A jury acquitting the officer who fatally shot Philando Castile moments before this infamous video was live streamed on facebook by his girlfriend. Trevor every time i watch that video the question i ask myself is how, just how . How does a black person not get shot in america . Because if you think about it, the bar is always moving. The goalposts are always shifting, theres always a different thing that explains why a person got shot. The person was wearing a hoodie, running away from the police, going towards the police, the person was running around at night, the person had an illegal firearm, didnt have a firearm, but at some point you realize there is no real answer. Right . You see this video and then you see the verdict and you go, how . And there have been a lot of these shootings, right . We talk about this a lot. So many things to say, racism, classism, systemic violence in a police force that oppresses people, but this story is interesting because there is Something Different and that is Philando Castile wasnt just a man shot at a traffic stop, he was a legal gun owner whose family was in the car and who had committed no crime at all. In a story of a man being shot because he was lawfully armed, you would think that one group, one powerful group in america would Say Something about it. This is one group you would expect to be losing their goddamn minds about this, the n. R. A. , but for some strange reason, on this particular case, they have been completely silent, completely silent, and yet, according to their rhetoric, this is everything they stand against, right . An officer of the state depriving a citizen of his life because he was legally carrying a firearm. Listen to how vocal and fired up the n. R. A. Gets when nothing has happened. There is no greater freedom than the right to survive and protect our families with all the rifles, shotguns and handguns we want. Trevor unless youre black, is what it should have said. Like, its interesting how the people who define themselves by one fundamental american right, the right to bear arms, show that once race is involved, the only right that they believe in is their right to remain silent. Please welcome janet mock cheers and applause trevor welcome to the show. Thank you so much for having me. Trevor good to see you again and congratulations on your second book. Your story is one that is completely unique and, at the same time, touches so many peoples lives, if your first book was about changing your life and reckoning with being a transgender person in america, what would you say your intention with this book was . Redefining my role in my first book was about the coming of age and figuring out my body in terms of the culture around me. Trevor right. This book is about my going back in and focusing on myself and not so much worrying about what other people have to say about me. Largely, its a 20something coming of age in the sense of career, going to college, meeting new friends, moving to a new city, but within the unique context of not necessarily being open about being trans. So there are interesting dynamics and learning lessons i got in that space. Trevor there were interesting lessons, for instance moving from hawaii to new york to study and experiencing what you call real racism for the first time. Which is interesting because it seemed like hawaii was a world where you existed and then you moved to a place where people said, let me touch your hair, whats going on over there. My black girl stuff bake a focus on the mainland. Growing up around a majority of people of color was a new difference and being in new york and going to the east village and having all these white wellmeaning liberals being problematic and them not knowing it. Trevor what do you do in that situation . How do you deal with a wellmeaning person who may stumble into what i may call land mine conversation . Language is a place of struggle, so for me its often about using language and stories, oftentimes my own narratives, to unpack and contextualize my experiences and frame it so people will feel its accessible enough for them to have language to talk about it themselves. When im thinking about the way i write, im thinking about my aunties i grew up around my Kitchen Table and his father and his family. I think about language, language thats accessible and people can feel the narrative experience of being someone who carries all these different identities in one body. Trevor i dont want to spend too much time on it but talking about your time working in a strip club, for ensubstance. The salacious part of the story connects with a lot of people, they go, tell me more, you worked in a strip club. It is interesting. Trevor it is interesting. Ill talk about it sometimes, whatever. I dont like to, but whatever. laughter , no, like, when you talked about the strippers as women, you talked about not every person who is stripping coming in with the same story, not always being a story of neglect, not always being a story of abuse. What tuning some of the misconceptions around that field of work are . Well, i think, oftentimes, like most, you know, industries that focus or are run by women, its largely seen as something thats, like, dismissed or the people engaging in the space are oftentimes objectified, so no one speaks to or engages with sex workers. For me, so much of my feminism not only comes from my grandmothers Kitchen Table but also by being backstage with these women who talk about their complicated lives, being mothers, of using this income to take care of their families. Im sex positive but im also supportive of sex workers right because i understand we need bodily autonomy and give women resource when theyre using their bodies to do what they need to do to take care of themselves. Trevor if theres one thing to take away from the book, whats would it be . I think we need to take the time to be ourselves. I was trying to figure out how to advocate for myself first before doing anything else with anyone. Trevor interesting.
