This films message is as poignant today as it would have been when i was a kid. everything is awesome song from the leggo movie everything is awesome everything is cool when youre part of a Team Everything is awesome larry no, everything is not awesome how did the leggo movie not get nominated for best picture . God, this was shocking in less shocking news, this also happened. While the civil rights movie selma earned a best picture nomination, director ava duvernay was snubbed. So was lead actor David Oyelowo. Larry oh, black people didnt get nominated for an oscar . Yeah, im mad, i guess. Dont get me wrong. Ava duvernay should definitely have been nominated for best director. But David Oyelowo . Hes a british brother. Them. So what do we as a people need to do . I wish there were a black hollywood expert who could go to bat for us. Reverend sharpton called for an emergency meeting here in hollywood next week to discuss possible action around the academy awards. Larry sharpton . Again . No one else can represent us . Look, al, slow down. You dont have to respond to every black emergency. Youre not black batman or our racial fire chief. Im beginning to think a typical day at al sharptons Office Looks Like this. Day, and since hes the patron saint of nonviolent protesters suck it, gandhi were going to talk about the state of the black protest. And there were a lot of them this year. There was the ferguson protest, the garner protest, and then the nypd protest of the handling of that protest. Then there was a black brunch protest. Yesterday in oakland, people were protesting police violence. And even as i speak tonight theres a demonstration going on in Grand Central station, because theres no better way to win the hearts and minds of white people than making them miss their train to connecticut. applause larry its true they hate that bleep laughter no i get it. Some people are discouraged. They think protests dont work anymore. But protests can work. Let me give you a few examples. 400,000 people marched in new york to protest Climate Change in september, and it succeeded as america and china signed a climate accord a few months later. Wow. Thats pretty good, right . cheers and applause i mean, more power to these folks because if we dont figure this out, then it wont just be black people saying i cant breathe. audience reacts oh too soon . Too soon . Yeah, i choked him, thank you very much. And dont forget the minimumwage protest last year. Fast food workers took to the streets demanding a raise in their pay. And it worked the minimumwage rose in 21 states to start the new year, leaving unpaid chipotle employees much much closer to one day being able to afford chipotle. One day, guys. Dont try to get it all. Not all at once. And finally, guys, this is the most amazing protest of them all, and im not making this up. The organization Harry Potter Alliance waged a fight with Warner Brothers to ensure that all chocolate sold with harry potters likeness was fair trade, and even that worked what . That worked and i have to say, as happy as i am for the gryffindor win, after ferguson and garner, it bugs me a little bit that in 2014 this is the only chocolate that got justice. applause but my point is, it succeeded. So they can work lets look at the real situation. Many critics called the recent black protest unfocused. I wont mention any names. coughs oprah. Sorry. I had something stuck in my stedman. Not calling anybody out but in fairness its not completely accurate. You see, its not that these protests are less focused, its that the goals are less tangible. In the old days, it was about being able to sit at a lunch counter or going to the same schools or even voting. Today were just trying to not get shot on our way to work. Now look, i know it sounds like im exaggerating and people may think, larry, calm down, police arent targeting black guys. Okay, roll 122. Tonight, a south florida family is outraged by this image right here and others. They say North Miami Beach police used it and the images of five other minorities as targets during weapons training. People that are out there supposed to be protecting us are using us as target practice. Larry that story was reported way back in. Today. Okay . laughter the police in florida are literally using pictures of young black men as targets how can we see that and be surprised when it happens in real life . Is protesting legal, might be my question because it seems like they say it is but then the cops show up immediately and theres a fight and everybody gets arrested and its over. When people are saying black on black crimes, black lives matter, where blacks are being killed. The last 30 years alone, our federal prison population increased 800 . This is not something to be proud of as americans. Larry no. Over 70 are nonviolent offenders. So weve created a criminal culture within our country where we are pushing more and more people into this very taxpayer extensive system where we are spending so much money on jails and prison and proration bags and courts and not investing in education infrastructure, empowering people to succeed in the first place and thats something that should be protested and changed. cheers and applause larry i agree. Absolutely right. So, bill, is the answer for less black people in prison maybe more white people in prison . Yes absolutely laughter larry sorry. How did i end up on this show . laughter larry you keep it real more than any comedian out there. Me and my aryan haircut. laughter check it out. I read 93 of black people kill black people but 84 of white people kill white people so why dont we talk about that . Larry lets be clear, these arent incidents that happen in the black community. We are in a relationship with the police, lets be clear about that and our relationship is really bleep up at this point. laughter when the agoer comes out were reacting to the relationship that spans back years. And the rage, the article you brought up i expressed that, but if we reduce this to a binary thing, cops versus blacks thats reducing it to a binary point. Its not about fracturing the community more, its about a community. You know, but in activist movements you have whats called solidarity and you realize what were fighting for so you dont go toward a rally to beat cancer and say well, all diseases matter. laughter you know, in the same instance it wouldnt be as bad if. Yeah, technically but youre right. All diseases matter yeah, well do that tomorrow. A whole month just for one disease. Breast cancer. Thats right. Everybody wears pink and some of the money gets to people, i guess. The rest of it goes to a giant pink yacht. laughter im extremely pessimistic about all this stuff. Larry really . Peaceful protests, i dont know if they get you anywhere in hue this day and age. Throughout history, if you read, the only way you truly affect great change is rikick louse acts of violence. Larry really . Oh, my gosh, no im not advocating it, but think about Mahatma Gandhi. Maybe you are advocating it i could find you a white guy to dunk, i could find the exception to the rule, but generally speaking people with no morals whatsoever are the ones that affect change. I agree with a lot of the sentiment and what bill is saying because we wouldnt be talking about ferguson if there wasnt a story about a riot if there wasnt a story there. Thats important. Its important to understand that the protesting needs to have that. Right, and sometimes through the pain and the noise and the fire and anger, sometimes we can find peace.
