Withrces we had to commit regulation and so on. I really believe that overreach of government is Holding Government back and i think it still continues to hold the economy, to hold people back. I ran to ensure my kids, my grandkids could have the opportunity to live the American Dream i had the upper the opportunity to do. A construction company. Member ofam the only congress ever to be born into an amish family. My parents were actually almost. Driving the buggies a hand. I was number 10 of 12 kids. I was the first of the kids to graduate from high school. The ominous tradition is that formal education and send a for ninth grade. So when i approach my parents they are green and allowed me to stay in high school but i could not go to a public school. Mennoniteduate of a school. I paid my own tuition by hanging drywall at night. For an older brother and what a Small Business with just a few employees from him and operated the business out of the budget most parents home but again, had to tremendous opportunity grow that company. We became a regional leader in commercial construction was several hundred employees. That is why i am talking about being able to start with little or nothing and being able to live your dreams. That is what america is about. There are stories all throughout my district and the country like that. Today it would be harder. It was about 35 years ago that i started the company. It would be a lot harder today because of the overreach of government. Post are you still part of the on mesh community . Rep. Smucker the area i represent is the largest amish area but i am not amish, i am lutheran today. From what do you take away that . Mesh veryer the on hardworking. Great family values. Really care about their neighbors and other people. Those are values i was raised with and to so i think that led to some degree to my interest in trying to find solutions to problems we are faced with and so i first served as a supervisor, got involved with cultivation and found i really enjoyed that opportunity to hear from our neighbors and others and try to solve problems and said that has been my approach in the state senate and that will be my approach here as well. Host what would you say your record was at the state senate level . What were you focused on . Rep. Smucker i represent a diverse but conservative district in a lot of ways. Labelsto like the no aspect. The no labels caucus here i am thinking of maybe joining. Toorked in the state senate try to find solutions to difficult topics and am willing to work with anyone who may agree with me and knowing that everyone is here representing different districts and have different experiences, a big part of being successful in the legislature i found in the state senate is learning to listen and trying to understand other viewpoints and find a common ground. Int what is your focus washington . I am pleased to be part of the Education Workforce committee. I was chair of that in the state senate. We worked hard to ensure a priest every child in pennsylvania had an education that prepare them for a career, college, whatever they chose to do. Focuses of the Workforce Committee would be the reauthorization of the Higher Education act and i think we could bring more opportunity there with a focus on a career and technical education. We have a lot of Jobs Available we areeed to ensure that preparing our students to take those jobs. Jobs are changing today. I think that is a real opportunity. I am also on the education and infrastructure committee. I think it would be a great session to be part of that. We did some work in pennsylvania on that as well where we realized that infrastructure is a core function of government, increasee able to funding for our highways and bridges that was very necessary at the same time we work cutting on the othernment areas. It is about what are the Core Functions of government, so i am looking forward to working with colleagues across the aisle to build a 21stcentury infrastructure. Host in your previous job at the state senate, you did some work pertaining to illegal immigrants. And was that legislation some might view that is nononline with the republican party, but explained. Smucker i think we must fix our immigration system and it does start i believe in securing the border. We have to know who is coming into our country. With to know who has come across the border who should not have. With do know who has overstayed their welcome. Whatever wind up doing with immigration, we start with securing the borders. I have always supported that approach. From there, we have to build a system that we have to fix our Legal Immigration system and we are a country of immigrants and we are talking about the American Dream earlier, we should be welcoming people who want to come here and work hard, who want to raise their families have lived the American Dream. I think that is what made our country great in the past and will do so in the future as well. Host you have what some other members of Congress Might say is the shorter commute compared to those who live on the west coast. You have to just drive a couple hours to get back on. Whos beckham . Tells about your family. Rep. Smucker you are right. I have a bout a twohour drive if i hit the traffic right. In the state senate, i could commute every day and i would do that here, too, if i could do that easier. I have a high priority to get back to the district. I also want to be back with my family. My wife is there and a son and eight grade. , 19yearllege as well old and 21yearold daughters. My wife has been focused on raising the kids and she has been a stayathome mom, i particularly appreciated that the cause of course the state legislature does take a lot of time away from the family so she has been focused on trying to create a normal childhood for our kids as possible and has been great. Host what do your children think about you rooting for this u. S. House seat . Rep. Smucker they are excited. It means im not much is there for them. It is hard, but with two of them in college, they are excited about what is happening here and particularly my son, he is 14yearsold, he is interested in politics. He gets to meet some people he would not meet otherwise. To have thery family here as possible so its been great. Host thank you for your time. I appreciated.
