Again, shortly after 7 00 this morning, Steve Scalise injured. They were out practicing for the baseball game which reportedly will go on as scheduled tomorrow night. Heres cnn reporting about the shooting of Steve Scalise. Hes the ninth sitting member of congress to be shot. Louisiana Steve Scalise, the ninth member to be shot while in office. And one of two dozen targeted by mr. Ayotte tackers since 179 by attackers since 1789. Gabrielle giffords, the congresswoman from new mexico, who was shot in january of 2011 in tucson, at her Campaign Event there. Tweeting this morning her thoughts and prayers. So sad for their families, what they must be going through. I hope they dont have residual Health Issues for the rest of their lives because of the act f another human being. As it relates to the congress, have been following cspan and only recently started watching cspan. Ive been really disgusted by the both sides and the rhetoric and the games and the ive mirks. It really is drama. Its performance. Its fake. Its all fake. Theyre there for themselves. Theyre not looking for the truth. m talking about both sides. Theyre just looking to keep the jobs that they have, the pensions, the health care, the status and theyre not epresenting we the people. Im older. You probably discerned that. But i feel badly because i knew the way the world was once. Not perfect, never any excuse for racism, never any excuse for saying who can get married and who cant. But there were things about so that never should have been ever, ever. However, there were things, love of country, loyalty of country, respect for the country. I have voted for president people who didnt get in. I did not denigrate in any way the other party. Thats life. You win, you lose. Im just going to wind this up because i know other people need a turn. Thats probably the only answer that i can come up with is, term limits, get people in there, if they do their jobs, great. If they realize theyre working for the voters who put them there, great. If not, they leave because of term limitses. They get the same health care as the average jane or joe, thats an old express. They get pensions the same way. They do not get any kind of lobbyist influence. They dont go on ridiculously expensive trips. Ey dont have you know, their support staff. One of those members who was at the game today, at the practice rather, was jeff duncan of tennessee. He spoke with members of the press after the morning meeting today following todays incident. Mr. Duncan i was there at baseball practice this morning. I left right before the shooting happened. And had an interaction with who i believe was the shooter based on the profile that i saw on tv. I have given a statement to the Alexandria Police department. This morning, after i heard about the shooting, they asked me to come down there because i had an interwax someone in the parking lot who asked me if the Team Practicing was democrat or republican team. I told him they were republicans. He said, ok, thanks, turned around. I got in the car and left. Find out that my republican colleagues were targeted by an active shooter today. Reporter do you believe you were targeted because you were republican . Do you believe your teammates were targeted because they were republican . Mr. Duncan based on the question he asked me, i would make that assumption. Because he asked me if this team was the republican or democrat team. Practicing. I responded it was the republican Team Practicing. And he proceeded to shoot republicans. Take that for what its worth. Reporter can you describe why you believe this was the shooter . Because of the description you got from police . Mr. Duncan based on who i saw and the description i gave to the Alexandria Police department fits the picture thats being shown on tv right now. Reporter did very a tshirt on that had any kind of partisan mr. Duncan what i recognized was a reddish shirt. I didnt see anything in his hands. Didnt see any partisan stuff on his body, clothing. I saw the individual, i know what he asked me. I know how i answered. Know what happened. So im making the assumption that he was targeting the republicans based on what did he. Reporter what was his demeanor . Mr. Duncan this is an exercise area in alexandria. So im making theres a ymca there. There are a lot of citizen activity in the area. Theyre exercising, walking their dogs. Its Early Morning. 6 30 to 7 00 in the morning. Lexs coming alive and people are exercising. Its not uncommon for us to have interactions with citizens who look in the fence and watch us practice a little. Its just for seven years weve had that. So nothing was out of the ordinary for this gentleman coming up and asking me a question. Reporter how much time elamsed from the time you had this mr. Duncan that was at c0702. The reason i know that is because i got in the car and commented on what time it was, knowing how long it would take us to get back to the capitol. One minute one way or another makes a lot of difference going back to the hill. Reporter how much later would the shooting have been . Mr. Duncan youll have to look that up. I dont know. Reporter are you worried this s going to be politicized . Policy debate or mr. Duncan it depends on how yall report it and what he says, maybe what his facebook says. Whether its politicized or not. I know what he asked me. I know how i answered. I know what happened. Im going to take it that he was targeting republicans this morning by shooting Republican Baseball Team on the field. Reporter to be clear, a congressman was with you at the time . Mr. Duncan yes. We were on field and we had already take batting practice, already shagged a lot of balls on the infield. He said, when do you want to leave . I said, i can leave now. Ive already practiced enough. Get back to the hill. Make an early meeting. He said, lets go. I said, lets let chairman conaway, he was in the batters box, lets let him finish his bat and then well leave. He finished. They started gathering balls up. Desantis and i walked off the field. I fist bumped scalise on the way off the field because i run around the mound. Then we get to the parking lot, scalise i mean, desantis in the car, im getting in when this guy approaches. Reporter how are you feeling today . Mr. Duncan im shaken up. My colleagues were targeted today by somebody that wanted to kill them. Trent kelly from mississippi played third base, when desantis left. Hes one of my best friends. He was the closest person to the shooter. So he was targeted first. By the grace of god he was missed. He zigzagged across the field as the guy continued to shoot and he saw the whip, Steve Scalise, get hit. I dont think hell ever and this guy fought in iraq. Hes a war veteran and an active Duty National guardman from mississippi. Hes faced fire before. But not in a baseball uniform. Not in a peaceful setting, practicing the american sport of baseball. But he zigzagged across the field to get away from an active shooter who was targeting republicans and hit , steve friend of ours scalise. I would ask everyone to exercise calm and reflection who ay for my colleagues were wounded and my colleagues that were affected because they were on the field when this happened and really the whole congress that is going to be affected by this. Going forward. The world changed a little bit for us as members. I just encourage everyone across america to pray for our nation and for their elected officials here in congress, as we work our way through this. Im going to try to go to the briefing. Also zack barth, who is a capitol hill worker, a congressional aid for texas congressman Roger Williams. He posted on facebook a short while ago, he said, i got shot this morning at the baseball fields but i am in the hospital and ok. Thank you for the thoughts and prayers. And then, my condolences to the people that have gotten shot and a speedy recovery. And my opinion, like some of the other people that have called in, i stand in agreement with how bad our country has come, to get to this point. You know, where were shooting innocent people.
