CSPAN Road To The White House September 14, 2015

We have a new command center. In about a minute i said i am bringing my entire team down to meet with yours. From that afternoon on, 24 hours a day, in one room you had every state official working together to get us through september 11 and every city official. When the feds came through, they were in that room. There was never any doubt about who would carry that mission. It was that total synchronized response by all levels of government, steve i will take it one step further. For you personally, what was your schedule like, what was your routine . Gov. Pataki you didnt have a schedule or routine. You would be meeting with , depending onthen the need, one moment you would meet with family members to console them, one meeting you would be with firefighters and construction workers to urge them they didnt need much virgin, they were so patriotic and strong. At the same time, you needed to govern in an emergency. The state runs the tunnels under the river, the tunnels and the subways, we needed to do everything to ramp up security. We didnt know what would happen next, so it was constant effort to get us through. By the way, as i mentioned, the economic crisis was the norm us enormous. The next day, we had a 24 hour Economic Assistance Program going in the lobby of the Office Building where my office was, everyone from the corner drycleaner to American Express had come in to get assistance to prevent them from suffering more economic disaster. It was a night and a day job by the mayor and the city and myself and my team and the federal officials that were here. One thing i will never forget is theAmerican People, outpouring of support from every corner of america. We had volunteers, experts, support, we actually had to set up a command center in major center to coordinate all the support we were getting to make sure we controlled it was going to ground zero to help. Forget thenever spirit of the American People and the strength of new yorkers. One of the most important things was the sense of unity we felt. Everything seems to superficially divide us, democrats, and young, old, it didnt matter, we were going to stand together shoulder to shoulder and the strength of america showed in those days and i hope we can show that again. Steve do you worry or are you concerned we could face another 911 attack . Gov. Pataki no question. I think we are in as great a danger as we have been. Two different types, we sell it happened in garland, texas where americans would have been massacred if not for a texas cop and we had seen some recruiters murdered by radicals. There are hundreds of thousands of americans who have been radicalized to attack fellow americans, we have to stop this. This is not free speech to try to convince a fellow american to kill other americans in the name of jihad. You cannot yell fire in a crowded theater, you cannot urge another american to kill other americans, we need to shut down the ability to radicalize americans who engage in violence. A that is not enough. Isis has they just used chemical weapons, they have weapons of mass destruction, hundreds of millions of dollars. They have people with western passports. If you think that that is not a , we are dead wrong. Anm not for a 10 year war or expenditure trying to create a democracy where none exists, but atneed to be cautious Planning Centers and recruiting centers, before they attack us. Steve what about Foreign Policy . Gov. Pataki we need to have allies that respect us, rebuild the military. When we make a commitment, where there is a line in the stand and then we ignore it, we do not keep our word and then our stature is diminished. Aggressive ine confronting radical islam, it will not go away because we pretend it doesnt exist. It is not just isis and al qaeda, it is iran where 150 billion of Economic Relief is going to go there and support terrorist activities against america and allies, not just in the middle east, but around the world that is wrong. I am not in favor of nationbuilding. I have two sons, one of them became a lieutenant and served in iraq. Another son became a lieutenant and got back from afghanistan. I know what it is like for a parent week in the middle of the night for a phone call that you pray never comes. I do not want an American Parents to worry about getting the call because their loved one is in harms way unless it is absolutely necessary. If we pretend that radical islam threaa direct direct t, we are making the same mistake we did before 911. Steve how many children do you have and how many grandchildren . Gov. Pataki four children. And for grandchildren so far and another one in october. One thing i boys believed one thing i have always believed is a generation should leave a better life for the next generation, that is for society. You look at the future now and america has always been about building a Better Future and now we have a government that i believe is dealing from future generations stealing from future generations. Many americans doubt tomorrow will be better. I want my grandchildren to have a better life than i do. We need to stop feeling the the americanailing people. This should be the most exciting time ever. We are going to cure cancer, have energy from sources we can only dream of, trains that go faster than planes. If we get the government right, people will enjoy this. Steve what was your wifes reaction when you told her you were running for president . Gov. Pataki i met her actually on the beach on long island, i was a crazy athlete then and i loved riding waves in the surf of long island and one day there was a massive surf because of a hurricane. You are not supposed to go in the water and i did and this other crazy woman was there griting the same waves ridin the same waves. Crazy as ishe is as can. That is how we met. And she knew that i had this desire to change the world, whether it was my hometown or the u. S. , she wasnt surprised by the decision. Steve you took time off the campaign trail earlier because of your soninlaw who had suffered a stroke. How is he doing . Gov. Pataki it is heartbreaking. My daughter allisons husband, dave. A doctor, an athlete, tremendous shape. It just finishes third year of residency. Out of the blue he has a stroke. Very lifethreatening. Praying and a lot of people are praying and we are thankful for that. He has made tremendous strides. Mentally he has made tremendous strides and doctors are hopeful he will have a 100 recovery and become an Orthopedic Surgeon that he was so close to being. You never know. With a stroke it is day to day. The thing is, he is doing better and we had people praying from the vatican to jerusalem and prayers have helped. We hope he has a full recovery. Steve are you a religious person . Gov. Pataki i am a quiet man of faith. The answer is i dont like to talk about my religion. My favorite quote is from Saint Augustine he was preaching and said, pray constantly and spreadread faith faith, and if necessary, use words. I love that quote. You do not have to have it on your sleeve or imposing it on others, i am a christian of quiet state and i try to live a life consistent with that. By doing that, inspire others. Steve we are a nation of immigrants and your family has an immigration story, when did your grandparents come here and from where . Gov. Pataki both of them were immigrants, they came through ellis island. They cannot speak english. My grandmother from ireland had such a great accent it was tough to understand her. They came here because they loved the idea of freedom, they had nothing when they got here. My father was born in new york where everybody spoke the same language, hung gary my fathers parents came from hungary. Hungarian, my fathers parents came from hungary. They worked in factories. Why one of the key changes i would make is a lower tax on manufacturing. Right now it is the highest in the developed world, i want to make things in america again. It is great for our country and economy and people who may be do not have a college degree. It is a middleclass job that pays well. When i was in college i worked in the same factory my grandparents worked in. I was always happy to get that paycheck. They were tough jobs, but good jobs where you made something. We dont have enough of those. Steve where do you go to did you go to college . Pataki i went to neil yale. My parents did not go to college. My mother had a scholarship to cornell, but she was the only one working at the time and she had to take care of her family. Her mother said no, sorry, you cannot go to college. My parents did not go. I had the chance. My older brother went there with an academic scholarship. I wanted to go to notre dame. A catholic kid. But he liked yale so i said i would go there as well. Steve political questions, you have had the unique to see donald trump from a different perspective, what do you think of him . Gov. Pataki i have never had a problem with them, personally. I dont have a problem with him running for president. But i do have a problem when you demonize an entire class of immigrants, in this case, mexicans. Thugs,l them rapists, or the vast majority, even if they come here illegally, they want to work and build a better life and when you do that it is outrageous. The idea we will take a 10yearold girl born in america, never spent a day in any place but the u. S. , fluent in english and doing well in school, and have the police come and send her to it to a country she has never been. That is an comfortable. I have never had a problem with them as a person, but the ideas he has expressed on immigrants veterans, they are just outrageous. And not up to someone who should be considered seriously the president of the u. S. Steve so does his entry hurt or help the Republican Party . Gov. Pataki it is very early in the process. I think im candidate some updidates who do not stand at the time when he made these remarks, i think they will regret it. But ultimately i think that candidates rise and fall based on their abilities, the peoples view of them, whether they trust them and their ability to lead, so hopefully as the race gets closer to actual decision time, people will take a look and say patacki is the guy. Steve you are one of three republican governors that sold that served three terms. What lessons can you take from past campaigns . Gov. Pataki everything is different. I am the only one there have been liberal republicans, but i am the only one running as a conservative on the conservative party line. I think that my record is different from earlier candidates. They were other governors of new york. Every race is different. People too often try to fight the last war or rerun the last race, this is about the 21st century, reclaiming confidence in our future, believing that the best of america is not behind us but ahead, and of the problems we face are not insurmountable, but with the right leadership in washington we can grow the economy stronger and reclaim our role of respect in the globe and protect our security. I am running because i know and believe if i have a chance to lead the country and can do that. Steve you remain in Single Digits in the polls, do you still think you can win . Gov. Pataki sure, i am not running for any other reason. It is early. He looked back at other races and the front runner never almost makes it to the end, or being close to being the nominee. This is summertime, this is relaxing time, the challenges we face in this century israel and people will want somebody to bring us together and solve problems. I can do that because i have to. And i know i can do this in washington. Steve former new york governor and 2016 republican candidate, joining us in our studios, cspan recently sat down with gop candidate rick santorum. During the interview, he talked about his life and why he is running for president. It is part of a series of conversations with declared and potential candidates as part of our road to the white house coverage. This is about 40 minutes. Minutes. The republican president ial candidate, rick santorum, this is not your first rodeo. You ran in 2012. We have done this before. Sen. Santorum we have. Host lets talk about you in this race. How is this one different . Sen. Santorum a lot more candidates, that creates confusion in the minds of voters. I have done every county in iowa and i am doing town Hall Meetings and most reaction i get from people is, there are a lot of good people out there and it is hard to make a decision. So it is a job distinguishing yourself out from the pack. The advantage is having done it before, people know me, certainly a lot more than last time and it makes it comfortable. I left a good impression. I amle know that i someone that can handle the stress and strain of the campaign. Not somebody who will change position or back down and flip flops. Somebody who believes the things amrticulate and and for for. And and trustworthy if you give me the baton to run with it. That is what this thing pushes me. I think it will be key to our success. Host so when you are thinking about this bid were thinking about this bid, what questions were you asking yourself . Sen. Santorum you ask, is this what i am supposed to do . I am a person of air and my wife and my kids, we prayed about this. Is this what god wants me to do . Just because god wants you to do it doesnt mean you will when. Maybe he wants you to win and you mess up and it doesnt happen. I dont know how that works. All i know is, how i look at it, is this the right thing for us and our family . Can you offer something to the country that is important, different, that you think you can bring to the table that is really going to make a difference for the country . That is the big question. Once you get over doing this for our personal situation, is this something that can make a difference for the country, and it is always a tough question. There are a lot of other good people out there, but i felt like we had a message and a track record and it was of experience and not just experience in a campaign, but experience in washington that is unique. Ofeone who stands for values americans, a conservative, a limited government, proeconomics, Strong National defense, the values of faith and family, all the things i think are essential for a good and healthy country. And experience in washington dc that has accomplished things that really nobody else in the field has. And a vision that is centered a a lot offferent than other candidates, a vision that talks about how we will help t behind in lef america, those who are suffering with economic problems, they are not succeeding, we have a whole group of people who are wage earners who see wages go up maybe a nickel a year for the last 25 years, that is not high. You are not succeeding if your wages are only going up a nickel in our hour. That group has always been at the heart of why i am out there. My father was a coal miner. I want to make sure that the American Dream is for everybody and that is the main part of why i run. That is why this whole Campaign Comes out of this area of insulting you. I dont see other republicans with these policies, everything from economic policies, trade policies, energy policies, all of what i am about, i wrote a book called blue collar conservative, it is about what we can do on the economic front and on the family side. It talks about the family, the integral role that the family plays in creating a healthier economy and america and how we can, as government and leaders, how we can help improve prospects for families. Differents makes us and i think it is what is needed to have common sense in these Commonsense Solutions that address these problems of a continuing breakdown of the family. Middle the breakdown of america and opportunities for people to rise. That is what excites me. To be able to have a message that can take these things and create a better and more hopeful future. I think that is the key to getting america winning again for republicans it is the key to start winning again. Host it sounds a lot like george w. Bushs message in 2000, is it . Sen. Santorum it is different. Our message is focused on the issues that are creating barriers to success. Structuring an economic model that brings back manufacturing, which i think is essential and key to creating ,pportunities for the economy for workers who are High School Graduates who have abilities, but dont have skills, to be able to get apprenticeships and learn trades and provide for a family, just at those levels of working on the factory floor. Being able to rise to foreman. Dont,t think i having been part of conservativism, this is a kinder gentler government as opposed to a real vision for how we can have the economy work better, a vision for what we can do to strengthen the nuclear family. I wish we had focused a lot more on that issue of what the government can do. More importantly, what society can do. One thing i believe and i say this on the road, part of the thing the government can do to strengthen the family, one thing, i was campaigning in wisconsin and the state senator there did a study that said if you are a single mom making 15,000 a year and you have to children, you get 30,000 in welfare benefit. If you mary, you lose them. As a result we have systematically told mothers who are receiving benefits, even those who are not, maybe you are pregnant, should i marry the father of my child or stay unmarried, he can work separately and i can have this child and get Welfare Benefits and he can support me by living here. It would be better economically. That is why for the first time in american history, it the majority of children born out of wedlock have cohabitating fathers, living in the home, because we have a system that says dont get married because you are better off not married. People have told me they have gotten divorced because they are better off economically with the father not concerning to the income contributing to the income. This is insane. This is a Government Program that breaks families apart. Some stopbeing them from being formed. There are policies, but there is a president that can use a powerful tool, the most powerful tool is the pulpit, the ability to speak to the American Public and cast a vision for what society should be and this president has used a lot of his ammunition and he will, to cast a vision for the greatest problem that concerns america today, climate change. You can be for or against what the president wan
