I think you have to be progressive. You learn from some of the things you did before. In many cases, we will be a lot ofe patient and tolerant demonstrators. Some of the planning did not change that significantly, but the world changed. After 9 11, everything changed in terms of large events. Centered around that, whether it be our made in america, welcome in america, people who visit here. We have large scale if vincent philadelphia, tremendous coordination goes into that. Its not just believe. Its not just its not just belief. Its not just fire. Folks across the room, the list goes on and on and on. We are protecting the city both from land, air, as you may have seen. Are you concerned about the potential for a lone wolf . Commissioner ross well, this is something you just dont know. Its hard to plan for the unknown. Just when you thought you were beyond that craziness and chaos, you get Something Else happening. Unfortunately, the unintended is everyone of those incidents prepares you in a way you did not want to have to. It makes you think in ways tactically you never thought before. How many officers will be on the ground. Can you give us an estimate . Commissioner ross it is significant. Anticipation of someone elses question, we are a little larger than cleveland. I think they are 1500. Really, we should have coordination with other Law Enforcement entities. The state police is helping us significantly. We have five counties providing Specialty Services to us. We will get that to you at a later date. Right now we are not prepared to disclose that. [indiscernible] the mayor indicated we strongly discourage people from camping. However, we will evaluate every circumstance. We will make those determinations as they come. [indiscernible] you mentioned tolerating protest. What will be Police Response be . We hope onlyross people with permits will protest, but that clearly want not be the case. I cannot tell you absolutely what we will do in every instance, because everyone will undoubtedly be different. I dont want us to put us in a corner by saying we will absolutely do one thing or another. [indiscernible] inundated withn calls about i95, two lanes. Im not sure, but it appears that they are funneling the truck from these points to basically get them to other routes. That going to look like before the monday morning rush hour, four lanes go down to two . In allioner ross likelihood, it will. There may be truckers over the weight limit that did not get that message. We are very clear that type of the of coal will be prohibited you traveling the routes alluded to. Commuters should be patient. I would say, yes, is the answer to your question. In cleveland for our demonstrators was far less than predicted. Can you talk about the difference between cleveland and philadelphia and why you believe those numbers would be far greater here . Commissioner ross i dont want to speak for the mayor. My answer is i dont know what the numbers will be greater. They expected greater numbers and did not get them. It is sunday. I do not know what will happen during the week. [indiscernible] it is aoner ross bigger city. Its way too early to start guesstimating numbers. [indiscernible] some of the initial permit requests. Sometimes they will permit for a certain number of people and half for a third show up. As commissioner ross said, we really do not know. A [indiscernible] based on the weather. We will be prepared for whatever we are faced with. [indiscernible] to backtrack, i was speaking about numbers far and above what the permitted individuals indicated. A lot of people may come above and beyond that. No one has been arrested yet. [indiscernible] no, not for this, yet. Not while i have been standing here. Kenney our goal is not to arrest anyone. A way to keeps is people outside the criminal justice system. We want to expedite this without making a formal criminal arrest. Do you see any Credible Threats against the dnc, against philadelphia . Commissioner ross no, we have not. Obviously our criminal intelligence agencies are remaining very vigilant. We will continue to monitor as many sites as we can. Yes, clearlyross we would put down some additional barricades, just to make sure vehicles would not be able to do the kind of thing that happened there. That is one significant change. Other than that, there has been no real significant changes with the overall plan. Commissioner, how do you decide to employ officers wearing polo shirts versus [indiscernible] commissioner ross our process for the most part is to wear the soft clothes, like i am in right now, to demonstrate we have no desire to be disruptive, to allow as many people as possible to demonstrate peacefully in a think that goes a long way toward conveying that message. Clearly there may be people who will not be part of a protest or demonstration, but they will not. E there so much as to protect following the Police Shootings in the u. S. , how did they change the outlook . Mayorsioner ross it is said we, unpredictable. You have to go into every day as though it is a normal day. Take precautions. Its an unpredictable world. I could not tell you other than calling each day a normal day as if it is a normal day, even tough it ishopefully we wont e respond to anything bad, but we will if necessary. [indiscernible] plans would change specifically [indiscernible] following the events in france and germany . Short. We would be remiss if we didnt take those precautions. Im not going into details, but to answer your question honestly, yes, we did take those precautions. The front lines, do you plan to be out on patrol . First of all, i cant say enough about my colleague in cleveland and how he handled that event. Choice. T have a you have to be out there conveying to the men and women that you are there, out front with them. But in addition you have to convey that to people who are protesting and demonstrating the general from public. Kudos to chief williams and his people, as well as anyone who planned alongside him. To you expect any protests in and around the convention enter . Yes, we do. And throughout center city. Probably 90 will be very, very peaceful. Many of these people have indicated that they have no desire to do anything other than express their First Amendment rights and thats what you expect to happen, but they will see a center city, no question about that. [inaudible] i will let the mayors press person tell you about that, but for the most part i think we will do something daily. She will let you know, but i think we will be putting out some information in the morning. It wont be in the form of from me, but you will get it from me each and every day. What did you learn from last year that was helpful . First of all, something that was more reminded of that learned of, the resiliency of these officers, as well as the city and their ability to plan significant event. That was a tremendous effort, as you know. It just showed us that we are doing the right things with regard to our planning. In terms of anything they did wrong, i wouldnt say that anything stands out, just constant reminders that you are on the right page. The same thing holds true with the trip to cleveland. It helps you in understanding the planning is where it should be. [inaudible] deals with protest, responses, etc. . This is the citys Emergency Operation center. When you have a National Special security event, there are a variety of different facilities that certain things are coordinated out of. Intelligence centers, information centers. This is the nucleus of the city. In addition to police, fire, and public safety, we bring in our support partners. There is a huge contingent of colleague out in the streets are working with us, providing water to people. All of that is really managed through this facility. [inaudible] obviously the fraternal order of the police is an organization that we express we respect in the have expressed their First Amendment opinion. I have no other comment other than that. Thats it. No, it will be very similar. Have the right to express their opinion. I know the president very well. Hes effective and he has the right to say what hes going to say. I dont personally wade into political rhetoric. Its not at i do. [inaudible] yeah, theres been a comprehensive plan around that. You always do that with a largescale event. We are obviously helpful that we dont have to resort to that, but if we do we are very prepared. [inaudible] thats been determined, or any other information . Obviously its still very early. T was very well respected i guess the best way to say that is that around 1 00 in the morning last night or this moreng at temple we had than 100 firefighters there. The mayor was there, on duty, offduty to say goodbye. It certainly still early and we will provide information to everybody when we have more information to provide. I can tell you right now that we are really we are certainly going to be fulfilling all the requirements of our mission , protecting the city 24 7, 365, circling up and working together the way that we do as brothers and sisters, rallying around his family, doing right by him. Can you confirm the fire from earlier in the day . Our firefighters and medics are absolutely responding to incidents. How long has he been with the department . Hes 42 years old with more than 20 years on the job. During this year or 10 months leading up to it, has there ever been a point that you said to yourself, why did i agreed to do this . No. [laughter] its very exciting to see with going to happen in philadelphia with this historic happening. Its going to result in the first woman president of the united states. That is exciting and wonderful. The details and the nittygritty sometimes get a little exasperating. I mean, yeah, theres never been a time to myself when i thought i was sorry that we had it. Im looking forward to it. This country after last week needs this. , ier how it ended last week was stunned at how bad it was. I think that what this country needs right now is four days of positivity. Have you ever underestimate underestimated how much work . The pope was this times five or six. Thats how they got was. I was not involved in the direct planning of that visit, but i was certainly in the city and watched everything that was going on. People were very nice to each other. The key to the whole thing is just to try to show some love, to show some understanding. People are hurting, angry, tearful. We cannot put the country back on track this kind of marginalization. We have to include everyone. I think thats been the message here. We need to come together in a unified way to make this country move forward and thats what we are going to do. What do you mean after last week . Did you watch last week . It needs some inclusion, it needs some love. It needs some help. It needs some energy that what we are living in are living in our difficult times, but its not all a downer. This country is a difficult country. To have a major Party Candidate talk so badly about our countrys situation, the country needs to hear from us and positive people. Bush is that hes a born again christian and he brought that ideology into the presidency. He believes he was gods agent on earth to fight evil. Bush called president ial rock of france on the telephone trying to get them to join in on the attack. During the course of that conversation he told him that we are fighting gog and my god before the final judgment. Those are creatures in the book of revelation and new testament. Thats the center of the for many evangelicals and fundamentalist christians. Bush generally believe that. He genuinely believed that he was gods agent on earth to fight evil. Tonight, at 8 p. M. Our live coverage of every minute of the republican and Democratic National conventions is brought to you as a public buyery your damage cable provider. Steve hello, from philadelphia, pennsylvania. The city finalizing preparations for its first National Convention is 2000. The democrats last here in last met here in 1948, when harry truman accepted the inination for a second term the First Political convention. Go back to 1848, when delegates for the whig party gathered in this city of brotherly love. Cspan bus is in the foreground of independence hall. Philadelphia will again make history when the democrats become the First Major Party to nominate a woman. Place forl be your unfiltered, gavel to gavel coverage. The venue is the Wells Fargo Center, the home of the sixers, flyers, and phillies football team. Part of a complex southwest of the city that houses the phillies and the eagles. Lets take a look at the agenda over the next four days. We will hear from the first lady, michelle obama, and Bernie Sanders, who dropped out of the race earlier this summer. Tuesday the theme is a lifetime of fighting for children and families. We will hear from the clinton and the mothers of the movement. In addition to senator tim kaine accepting his partys nomination, we will hear from joe biden and barack obama, the scene being working together. Following that, tim kaine will hear from Hillary Clinton, introduced thursday by Chelsea Clinton. The theme is stronger together. Fromoverage will be live inside of the Wells Fargo Center. Joining us just across is evesham garris, the senior Political Editor for cbs news. Thank you for being with us. Steve great to be with you, steve. Steve what do you think the democrats need to do in the week ahead . The republicans got knocked off message for the first few days. First there was this plagiarism deal from Melania Trump. She had taken some paragraphs Michelle Obamas speech for 2008. Sort of commuting a night in which everyone would have been talking about the criticism of Hillary Clinton. Instead all the conversation was s speech Melania Trump and what was wrong there. I was monday. Tuesday was more about her speech, in terms of the campaign with different responses to how that happened. They didnt clear that up until wednesday. And they were expecting to hear about the might hence nomination acceptance speech, but he was overshadowed by ted cruz, who gave a speech and got booed off the stage. It wasnt until thursday that we heard the message that campaign wanted to come out of that convention. For trump, i mean there were millions of people who watched it. Week orsee as the next to go on what kind of reaction the American Voters have, but there seem to be too. One, there was generally a positive reaction among republicans, but others felt that the speech was a bit dire in terms of its description of where america is right now. Its an interesting strategy, because if you talk to American Voters the majority think that the country is on the wrong track. I think what we will see clinton do moving forward is take the office that we saw yesterday in her speech with a running mate, unity,ne, trying to take trying to unify the country with a positive message. Her slogan is stronger together. They are really talking about america positively, a complete where trumps. O again, we will see where American Voters land on this after her convention this week. Mentioned the ratings, 32 Million People watching donald trump. Your colleague, john dickerson, sat down with the president. What role do you think you will play this week as he tries to fire up democrats, but also moving ahead as a surrogate for it inton kane take ticket . Interesting will be to watch. Hes already been extremely critical of trump. Whether it was in todays interview, on the stump, or even overseas criticizing trumps foreign policy, which is sort of unprecedented. We havent seen that kind of aggressive criticism since reagan going after dukakis in 1988. Interesting, but we can expect a lot of Harsh Criticism of trump and his prescription for america. In terms of fiery people up, there is a real concern among the Hillary Clinton folks and democrats in general of enthusiasm for this years election. I think they want to get what they call the Obama Coalition out there in full force, talking about young voters, african voters, suburban women. But Hillary Clinton is not so well among younger voters. In the tuesday as africanAmerican Voters will be questionable without an africanamerican at the top of the ticket. Them pushing those demographics to get those folks out in november. Steve the cbs poll from the weekend indicated a slight bump for donald trump, but clearly within the margin of arrow looking at the national polling. Yeah, its a quick turnaround paul. We will get a better sense after her speech. S but what is interesting is that donald trump has remained very competitive in battleground states. I think it was the thought that trump, once he got to the general election, might not resonate American Voters. I think that people think he has appeared to far off message, with a tendency to get distractions involving his message and campaign. Look at the battleground state hes running the consistently tie or near clinton in a lot of these laces. A lot of that has to do with unfavorable ratings. Hillary clintons unfavorables are almost as highest trumps. We have two of them here with record of a verbals nationally and thats keeping him in the game. The other part of this is her email scandal. If you look at the polls over the last year, look at the question of whether americans find her trustworthy or honest . That number has gone up 19 froms in the last year, april when the scandal broke until now. Shes got issues to deal with that are really what people to go her and her personally. I think that is keeping him competitive in the race right now. Spent a weeky, you in cleveland, now here for a couple of days. As we look at the stage with the democrats will deliver these speeches, with your overall sense of these aesthetics within the quicken loans arena and Wells Fargo Center . Steve s. in terms of the aesthetics, its a very similar set up. I just got here this morning and i took a look at the room. The stage seems a bit larger, but from a production standpoint its pretty clear that these parties have this down over the last few cycles. Its a pretty consistent look. Aesthetically its or a similar to the republicans. What im really looking for, to be honest with you, is the unity factor in terms of what can happen this week. Republicans, we spent months talking about it. Whether they would get behind trump as the nominee. We saw pretty fairly a smooth run with a couple of blips here and there last week but a smooth path to the nomination for trump last week. There will be no question that Hillary Clinton will be the nominee of the Democratic Party, but there are a significant number of standards supporters that will create some problems. Be the underlying story that is focused on the republicans but now we are seeing a lot more stories coming out about where sanders delegates are with the developing story from the weekend. They are not happy with her. And they dont feel that they are being paid enough of it do for the clinton folks for what sanders did in the primary in terms of moving progressive causes forward. I think that what we will see is a little bit of loud dismay and protest, perhaps, from the sanders for. One delegate told me that we should not be surprised if we hear ruling from the floor, which would be interesting in light of whats going on with both of these parties. Hillary clinton has a bit of work to do to unify the party this week. Steve we will be talking with one of those standards delegates later in the probe sanders delegates later in the program. Steves work is available online, cbs news. Com. Thank you so much for being with us. Steve s. my pleasure, steve. Steve we will be talking much more about what to expect in the days ahead. First, my colleague, peter, on the floor of the Wells Fargo Center. Heater as you mentioned, the Wells Fargo Center was built in 19 1996. The Wells Fargo Center now, owned by comcast. This is julia. Philadelphia inquirer. What did this place look like one month ago . Is where the 76ers play basketball, where the hockey, it looked like a sports arena. There was not blue carpeting on the floor. This was the sight of the 2000 republican National Convention, so a lot of what they did then they are doing now. Similar playbook, the stages in the same place. They had more of a sense of what to do here. Peter has the city been doing the same thing . Steve s. absolutely julia absolutely. There is metaphoric red carpet to roll out for everyone. Projects around the city from patching up potholes to cultural projects. But those are much more limited than 2000. I think because the city has grown and has become a bit more in the National Spotlight daily, we had a post in september. The major city press has to do with expected protesters and how tokeep them safe and how prepare for what could be really large numbers. New mayor whoe a has come into this. What has been his role in getting ready for the convention . Steve s. the mayor julia the mayor has been very involved. He took over from the former mayor and is part of the Host Committee. The mayor has also had a number of press conferences preparing people for, like i said, the crowd, warning people that this wont be the same as the pope in scope. Philadelphia had hundreds of thousands of people turn out to see the pope in a very public place in september. This is a smaller scale event, a narrative that we have heard a lot in soil you. You will be able to get around the city. This is a ice for politics, right in this arena. But it shouldnt affect the average philadelphians everyday life. Peter if you lived here and wanted to volunteer, could you . Yes. S. julia the Host Committee had a number of volunteer committees. You know, not necessarily on more. I have heard of volunteer jobs like clappers, people who clap for delegates getting off airplanes at the airport. Opportunities to tweak and post to instagram about what the city feels like an looks like in terms of a Big Convention coming to town. There are a lot of opportunities. I think there are more than 10,000 volunteers signed up to help with the whole week. Finally, how much is this costing the city . Julia so, the cost to the city is somewhat negligible. 650,000 is what they have spent on some project and overtime. Beever, security is going to there was a grant that they received for security and the Host Committee is raising 6 to put on very much the show that you are going to see here. Other events, parties, and things throughout the city. Julia, thank you for the preview in the Wells Fargo Center. Steve a reminder, all of our coverage is available here and. Org. E at cspan joining us now is joel, the chiefs dratted just for the clinton came ticket. Thank you for being with us. thank you for having me, steve. Steve what is your goal coming out of this convention . Joel i think that it is the you haveained period of four Straight Days where the in thereally interest election will be paying attention. Its a great opportunity to show cross party unity. Show the democrats united, because we believe the stakes are high. Hillary clinton will be the candidate, the only one in the race compared to what we heard last week, who has real plans that will make a real difference in peoples lives with a very different vision of the america we want to build. And inclusive america that believes that our diversity is our ranks and that america is longer and we lift each other up, not tear each other apart. Joel steve following up on that, in an interview tonight secretary clinton says she is not going to him engage in insults. Asking for a reaction to donald trump, calling her crooked hillary. How will that play out in the is by democrats and by clinton on thursday . Joel im not going to raise the curtain too much on any speeches for you, as we wanted to be fresh for the voters, obviously, but look, donald trump has engaged in a series of practices is a businessman that have been damaging to working people. He has a track record. Hillary clinton is running on her record, a person who has been a champion for women and families, in making a difference for 8 million kids get health care through the chip program. Helping veterans get additional benefits, either after fighting in combat on the health side. About doing what you say you will do for people and it having credibility. Track recordrumps is is very different. Stepped allhe has over contractors, Small Businesses, players, carpenters, plumbers, working people as he enriched himself through the system he was so proud of knowing. He promised he would pay people for their work, they delivered on their promise to do the work and he refused to pay. I dont think the American People want a president who think its ok and they cavalierly failed to pay people for the work that they do. Those kinds of things are fair game. Its a clear contrast choice between a candidate standing up for the people in their families and one track record shows that he puts himself first. That if workers and businesses got in their way, he didnt care, he stiffed them. How many of these conventions have you attended over the years . Can you add them up . Joel i can. This is my fifth. My first was as a reporter in 1992. I was in chicago and i was working on the polling for then president clinton. Was at both of president obamas conventions, 2008, 2012, and im as excited about this one as i am about all of them. I think we are going to show a unified party, making it clear to the American People the choice in front of them, that Hillary Clinton is the person real concrete plans to improve their lives going that will rear lives Going Forward and that is what is most important to them right now. Steve as you know, yesterday, representative Debbie Wasserman schultz introduced Hillary Clinton when she welcomed tim kaine to the ticket. Will the chair have a role to play this week . There are stories she will not be visible. Joel i think those conversations are taking place outside of where i am working right now. Making sure we do not have any speed bumps along the way. We are imf the hall doing a lot of lastminute things getting ready for the program, making sure we do not have any speed bumps along the way. We are looking forward to a united front. I think Bernie Sanders, senator sanders as reiterated today he is focusing on making sure we defeat donald trump in november. I know that is important. I think all democrats feel very united. That will be the primary focus of the week for us. Steve you do not expect any surprises with senator sanders. The same thing last week with senator cruz refusing to endorse donald trump. Joel i think senator sanders already endorsed Hillary Clinton. They did a wonderful event together in New Hampshire. They enjoyed being on the stage together, presenting a united front. I think they both believe very strongly we need to have the Progressive Democratic values in the white house to really do what we need to make sure we build an economy that works for everyone, not just at the top. That working people get a fair shot. I think they are united in that front from now through november for sure. Steve i am wondering, before we let you go give us a sense of what you will be doing. We will see what is happening inside the Wells Fargo Center. A lot happening on the stage where you are. What goes through the planning walk us through the planning for all of this to make sure everyone is on and off time, the speeches are done on time, and that things go as planned. Joel the preparations have been going on for six weeks. You generally know how much time you have. You know how many speakers you can fill. We have a lot of great idioms and films great videos and films. We have many real people from around the country whose lives have been touched directly and indirectly by what Hillary Clinton has fought for her whole life. We will be telling stories, how she has made a difference from disabled people she has met, First Responders at 9 11, after 9 11. We have a very diverse program. It takes a lot of handson. There has been a large team of folks working on it. People who write speeches, work with people writing speeches. Getting them to time. You time it out minute by minute basically over the four nights and do that in advance. Then you have to have the team on the ground. We have been here since thursday and friday. You have to be flexible. Things are going to come up where you have to make changes. You have to make lastminute ships. There is a group that is very committed, working their tails off. We heard this a little less than 20 four hours ago. We feel very good where we with a little less than 24 hours to go. We had our bases covered. Steve the good news is all those interested in what youre doing, all unfiltered, on uninterrupted, every minute of the convention here on cspan. How do we make sure there is not be snafu we saw last week with Melania Trumps speech using portions all Michelle Obamas speech . Joel we go through every speech. We want to hear speakers draft the speeches in their own voices. We have researchers checking facts. The Republican Convention was a fact free convention. Donald trump has no compunction about standing up another and things that are completely not a fact. They are somewhere alive in that gray brain he says he has. He does nothing to be able to deliver facts and a true and honest way. What we do is make sure none of those missteps happened. I think what happened to Melania Trump was unfortunate. The staff writer who ultimately said, hey, that was on me, you have to have someone checking the work of the staff writer, researchers, other writers. And you know, try to avoid missteps like that. Steve final question how much of last week from cleveland did you watch . Joel a fair amount. We were pretty busy, you know, because we have been working on this convention for a few weeks. I tried to tune in during the prime time. I was able to watch the better part of what occurred between, you know, some of the early afternoon stuff with the tv on in the back rent, but mostly the background, but mostly the evening speeches, i got to hear probably 80 of them directly. Steve you do not want to give away any surprises, a couple of surprises . Joel what do you mean by surprises . Steve you tell me. Joel no, look listen. I think by tomorrow, people will have a pretty good sense of the lineup. During the week, we will be announcing things. I dont think we will have any big surprises here. I think we kind of know what everybody was to say. Everybody wants to say. Its an optimistic message, its about the america we believe in as democrats, how it is a stronger america, an america that will work for everybody, not just those at the top. We think weve got the plan to do that. The only thing i think people will be in wonder of is how smooth, united, and clear and crisp our convention is based on the chaotic, divisive events they saw sadly over the four days there. So divisive that a lot of republicans, as you know, stayed away from it, including the governor in the host state of ohio. We will not have anything like that happen here. We feel strongly about the united front we are going to present to the American People over the next four days. Steve you have a very busy weekend. Thanks for being with us here on cspan. We appreciate it. Joel thanks for having me, steve. Steve of course we were live yesterday when Hillary Clinton traveled to miami, florida to introduce formally senator ted senator tim kaine. The freshman senator on her ticket, she called senator kaine at 5 30 p. M. Eastern time to invite him to join the ticket. This is part of cspans live road to the white house coverage. [applause] ms. Clinton i have to say i have to say that senator tim kaine is everything donald trump and mike pence are not. [cheers and applause] ms. Clinton he is qualified to step into this job and leave on and lead on day one. And he is a progressive who likes to get things done. [applause] that is just my kind of guy. We both grew up in the midwest. We were raised by fathers who ran Small Businesses and who taught us about the dignity of work and the discipline of a job well done. And in both of our families, faith wasnt just something you talked about at church on sunday. It was a call to serve others in every way that we can. [applause] and as you get to know senator kaine, you will see that his lifelong commitment to social justice is a shining example of his faith in action. During law school, when his fellow classmates were taking internships at law firms, he took time off to work with missionaries in honduras. [applause] and after he graduated from harvard law school, he could have done anything. But instead he chose to become a civil rights lawyer. [cheers and applause] one of his first cases was a pro bono case representing a woman who was denied an apartment because she was africanamerican. [booing] sec. Clinton while tim was taking on housing discrimination and homelessness, donald trump people from apartments who were africanamerican. He is still fighting those battles today, serving as a nonpartisan city councilmember and then the mayor of richmond, virginia. Toked hard to ridge bridge racial divide. He helped turn that struggling city around. As governor of virginia he led the commonwealth through the worst financial crisis in a generation. What did he do . He brought democrats and republicans together to protect the programs that working families count on. [cheers and applause] while mike pence slashed Education Funding in indiana and give tax cuts to the wealthiest [booing] tim kaine cut his own salary and invested in education from prek through college and beyond area. [cheers and applause] in miami yesterday by the way, senator kaine is back in richmond this morning. We are back live inside of the Wells Fargo Center in southwest downtown philadelphia. Joining us is the National Political correspondent for the Washington Post. Thank you for being here on cspan. We appreciate it. Let me ask you about the selection of tim kaine. How did that come about . Hillary clinton decide he would be the right choice . There were a couple of things that Hillary Clinton was looking for in her Vice President ial search. She started with 30 names and whittled it down to one. She wanted to make a governing decision and pick someone that she knew was qualified without a reasonable doubt, someone qualified to be commander in chief if some happened to her and someone who could help her make decisions in the white house. She was also looking for some chemistry. She wanted to have a personal relationship with her Vice President. Not just a political pick. They really hit it off. They like each other. She thought he was a nice guy, a serious guy with the depth of experience, as you heard. He has been the mayor, then the city councilman. Hes been governor, lieutenant governor, now senator with a lot of experience on foreign policy. Thats who he was looking for to complement her on the ticket. Steve if they do win in the senate, Governor Terry mcauliffe could appoint a successor, but only for a year. Did that play as a key factor in all of this . Phil i think it did. I think it became clear that he was the right choice for other reasons i mentioned. That the senate had a lot to do with it too. Including Elizabeth Warren from massachusetts, some senators if they vacated the seat, there would be republicans replacing them and thats a risk in the senate. It is something harry reid come of the Senate Democratic leader was concerned about. Another example was sharon brown. If he were to become Vice President his vacancy would be filled by john kasich. Virginia, Terry Mcauliffe is a done that a governor and a clinton ally. Clinton really felt like she could trust him to replace tim kaine, steve lets remind our audience, a lot of activity happening here. They call it the wargames, you might hear some microphone checks and other things happening. [laughter] lets talk about her challenge to balance a hopeful tone with an argument for change. How will she do that . Phil we are coming out of the Republican Convention, where donald trump and the republicans on stage presented a dark and ominous picture for the country. Trump said that he would be the law and order candidate, presenting a vision for the country that was dark, scary, and frankly terrorizing for a lot of people. I think that what Hillary Clinton will do here in philadelphia is to say that look, we have a more optimistic take on the street date of the country and where its headed. On the state of the country and where its headed. We will hear president obama give a vigorous defense of his years. The Unemployment Rate is down, more people have jobs, wages are going up. The challenge for Hillary Clinton is to not just come across as a defender of the status quo, but really infuse that positive tone. She needs to be a change agent, which is tough, they have been part of a system for decades. They are running for a Third Straight democratic term in the white house. She is going to have to find that balance and it is something that her advisor said on the air. Steve lets talk about some of the news this morning, with senator Bernie Sanders on open this week. A lets watch. Senator sanders i told you a long time ago that the dnc was not running a fair operation. What i suggested to be true six months ago turns out in fact to be true. Im not shocked, but i am disappointed and that is the way it is. What should be done about it . Sen. Sanders what i also said many months ago is that for a variety of reasons, Debbie Wasserman schultz should not be chair of the dnc. This reiterates the reasons why she should not be. The main reason, in my mind, is not only these emails, its we need a Democratic Party that is open and bringing working people into the party. And bringing all of the people of the country. Im sick and tired of an economy that works for the 1 let me interrupt you there sen. Sanders our campaign was about revitalizing american democracy. I want to see that incorporated into the Democratic Party and i dont believe that Debbie Wasserman schultz is the person to achieve that. Should she step aside and should she be denied a prime time slot . Sen. Sanders she should resign , period. And we need a new chair who is going to lead us in a very different direction. That is taking on the billionaire class and fighting for an agenda that works for working families. Steve this morning, abcs this week, with george stephanopoulos. All of the programs can be heard on sunday. Lets rejoin phil of the Washington Post. Certainly not the way that Debbie Wasserman schultz wanted to begin this week. Phil no, this is bad. This is also not the way that Hillary Clinton wanted to begin this week either. These emails revealed that Debbie Wasserman schultz and other top officials at the Democratic National committee were not exactly fair during this process. Its a problem. I think she has been under a lot of pressure for a few years now, given her performance at the dnc. There are a lot of critics who believes she shouldnt the the chair. President obama has been fined to keep her there. Hillary clinton has shown no urgency with trying to keep her there. Its a real distraction and i think the Clinton Campaign is going to have to figure out what to do about that. There are some reports that she may have somewhat less of a prominent role here. I havent confirmed those independently. We are going to have to see in the next couple of hours. I dont think we have seen her yet. All eyes are going to be on that as we open the convention. Its a distraction that the Clinton Campaign would rather not have to deal with. Steve those emails really indicate a real schism between the Democratic Party hierarchy, the Clinton Campaign, and sanders supporters. There will be 1900 sanders delegates inside of the wells fargo. How will that play out . Not only tomorrow, but throughout the week . Phil thats right, coming into this convention we thought there would be strong unity between the sanders folks and clinton folks. He had that appearance with clinton a couple of weeks ago and it went well, he was rather enthusiastic in his endorsement of her. I think that we will see his loyalists and supporters feel burned. They alleged from the beginning that the Democratic National committee was in the tank for clinton, that it was a rigged system and that Debbie Wasserman schultz as the chair was not being fair with the candidates. Now they have evidence that bolsters the case. I think this is a problem and we are going to have to we will we are going to have to see how clinton and her team address it. What kinds of things will they be able to do to bring those sanders supporters on board and make them feel more comfortable with the situation . Steve what about bill clinton, the former president . What role will he play . Clearly he will be speaking before this convention. What else will we see and hear from him today in this week. Phil i dont know what he will be talking about here. The most effective thing he can do for Hillary Clinton here is let america know and understand who she really is. There is this sense that we dont know the inner hillary. We dont always see her as a the human person behind presentation she has as a politician. This is a man who fell in love with her decades ago, has been married to her, had a child with her, been through a lot of and downs with her in their personal and political life. To the extent he can help fill out the picture of Hillary Clinton and make people at home feel like they know her better, feel like they can trust her. I think that would go a long way. Judy sent that he can fill up the role bill clinton played in the 2012 convention in charlotte a long way. The role bill clinton played in 2012 convention in charlotte i expect president obama to try and play that role here in philadelphia this week. Steve philips work is online at washingtonpost. Com. Thank you for being with us. Phil glad to be here, steve. Steve we are back outside of the Wells Fargo Center. This is a secure perimeter. Making sure that this is a secure area for the media, the delegates, and Hillary Clinton. President obama, Vice President biden, tim kaine, all inside over the course of the week is the coverage continues. Last month we sat down with tim kaine, the full interview is available on our website. Heres a portion as he talked about his early years in politics. Sen. Kaine i thought about the first elected governor in virginia. I had no hesitation saying he is my political hero. He came back from being a submariner in world war ii, in the pacific. The first governors election after he got back, it was like 8 of the electorate participated in the election. Why . One state. There was a democratic machine, dixiecrats the tried to run things using old tax is an unwitting else, they kept people from participating. They said you are not going to fight for democracy in the pacific and i am back to a oneparty state. So he built up a Republican Party that was the progressive alternative to the segregationist democrats. He ran for governor in 1965 and lost, all the while building the party. The naacp supported him. Organized labors of him. He integrated the Public Schools in virginia. After they had fought like hell. When he integrated the schools he did it as an act of courage. As an active and civil. He was front as an active as an act of principle. He was a next governor the tried to run senate a few years later and finished third in a fourway primary on the republican side. He couldnt even get the nomination because people were mad at him for what he had done to try to bring about a better day in virginia. He will be 93 in september. People looking at he and his wife, because jinks was his wife, they were equal partners in all of this. They look at what they did and they say while, that was a guy who turned the state from looking backwards to looking forwards. He is one of the great heroes and im smart, i will follow his advice. When im smart i follow him. Steve let me ask you about that picture here. Sen. Kaine it was a picture on the front page of the new york times. When the busing order came down and said that we are we will embrace it. He thought the best way to do it was to show that his own family would participate. The Governors Mansion is right in the heart of the city but not in any school district. Instead what he said was look, if im going to say that integration was a good thing, my kids should go to the neighborhood schools. Which were largely almost completely africanamerican schools. And he said i should escort them , there and say look, kids should be able to sit down there. Regardless of race. That is a picture of my father in law and my wifes sister, oldest of the four kids, walking into Kennedy High School on the day of school. There were a lot of pictures of governors, southern governors, blocking schoolhouse door in little rock, colleges like the university of mississippi, trying to keep black kids from coming in sitting next to white kids in school. As far as i know there was only one picture of a white southern governor escorting his daughter into school. Say integration is good, it is not just for other people, for us it is good. That influence has been so powerful on myself, my wife. I was a civil rights lawyer for years before i got into state politics. Both in my career fighting for civil rights, largely in the area of housing discrimination, i did some National Cases and in that work, in my work as a mayor and now as my work in my work as governor and senator, his example is the one that i just try to take inspiration from. Steve senator tim kaine, our cspan interview talking about the influence of his fatherinlaw. By the way, the Washington Post reporting that he was considering him to be Vice President when spiro agnew resigned and gerald ford took over. History could have been different in the mid1970s. The full interview is available on our website. Yesterday in miami, Hillary Clinton made a point to talk about tim kaine and his progressive agenda. Heres a portion. Sec. Clinton so, when i say hes a progressive that likes to get things done, i believe it. Hes not afraid to take on special interests. Whether he is calling for tougher regulations on payday lending or fighting back against attacks on planned parenthood and depending on women being allowed to make their own Health Decisions [cheers and applause] he has defended the country when it comes to Voting Rights and lg quality [cheers and applause] to criminal Justice Reform and comprehensive immigration. [cheers and applause] steve that was Hillary Clinton, yesterday in miami. We are back alive inside the Wells Fargo Center. Stephen colbert, last week he was in cleveland. We want to show you what it looks like when the folks at the cbs late show try to put this all together. We are joined from constitution a Bernie Sanders delegate who was very critical of the way that things have been unfolding so far. Thank you for being with us. Pleasure. Steve is senator tim kaine progressive enough for you . You can define progressive any number of ways. Theres an Insurance Company that calls itself progressive. Tim kaine has been a high jump apparently over her low standards of what it means to be progressive. When you vote as he did, one of only a dozen Democratic Senators last year to fasttrack the corporate friendly tpp. When you oppose raising taxes on millionaires, when you want to loosen the restrictions on banks and further deregulate sizable banks, and you support coalfired plants time of national and global emergency in terms of climate and on and on, we have got a major problem here. I want to stress at the outset, as the coordinator of the independent bernie delegates network, i have not spoken to any bernie delegate and i spoken , to hundreds of them getting ready for the formal start of this convention, i havent spoken to any who want to see donald trump as president. As a matter of fact, all of the bernie delegates understand that by far the worst president ial candidate on the ballot in november will be donald trump. We understand it would be a catastrophe of donald trump were elected president. Thats one of the reasons we are so upset by the selection of tim kaine. We believe that in her interest to apparently triangulate much more than the 45 of voters who voted for Bernie Sanders, what Hillary Clinton has done is gone ahead and put in this Vice President ial slot somebody who will be a good target, a broad target again for donald trump. With his faults, faux economic populism. Donald trump, claiming to be against wall street and the big boys, and in a way this lies Hillary Clinton a place into that. When i hear the talk from the 3Hillary Clinton campaign apparently its time for unity . I want to say, and i think is coming from many bernie delegates where is your interest in unity when you put on the ticket a senator who is a thumb in the eye for Bernie Sanders delegates. You say you want to reach out to the 45 of voters who voted for him in the primaries and caucuses, but you have reached out to put your thumb in our eyes and that is a bad side Fall Campaign and beyond. Steve will there be any challenge . We are hearing rumblings that some are calling for a vote on the tim kaine nomination. What are you hearing . Norman the Bernie Sanders delegates work, independents, we have two thirds of the Bernie Sanders delegates at this convention in our network. We reflect, we dont direct. In that goal we did a survey 10 days ago. When we asked of the Bernie Sanders delegates whether they felt that tim kaine would be acceptable or unacceptable in the Vice President ial slot, 88 of them set unacceptable. Only 3 of them said acceptable. Here we are confronted with this choice by Hillary Clinton and there is much discussion going on amongst sanders delegates, independent of the Sanders Campaign of whether we should directly contest the choice of tim kaine on the convention floor. Steve let me ask you about the chair of the party, Debbie Wasserman schultz. Bernie sanders today calling on her to step down. What will you be doing in the days ahead on that issue . Norman shes always been part of the dominant wing of the party. With the granular information, the emails, i think it earnings what correct. We were not surprised by what he was saying six months ago. The entire Democratic National committee under Debbie Wasserman schultz was biased and unfair and they were supposed to bes the straightforward. The same pundits who were doing those accusations that he was correctly making six months ago are largely the same pundits who are saying now that the Democratic Party is unified behind Hillary Clinton and they are applauding the tim kaine choice. Ive got to say, many pundits a couple of examples, david rooks and mark shields in recent days, saying that this will be a unified convention. I would be surprised if they spoke with 20 bernie delegates. If you have your ears open to people, there is a lot of disappointment and outrage at Hillary Clintons call for unity while she turns around and spikes the potential for a unity with this selection. Steve the Clinton Campaign, according to the polls, saying that the Sanders Campaign folks will go with the convention, peeling off those moderate republicans, doing whats needed to win in november. Norman i have heard that that is wishful thinking. Some of the major swing states in the midwest and elsewhere, there is tremendous sentiment against wall street and corporate trade deals, which in a demagogue way, donald trump is trying to exploit and drive a wedge between democrats and democratic leaning independent voters. Rather than malia rate then than mere rather meliorate for trump to pull the wool over peoples eyes, Hillary Clinton did not select for the ticket. They did not select to choose secretary perez from labor to go onto the ticket and give some have to to the wobbly claim that somehow Hillary Clinton has seen the light and is against corporate trade deals. As a matter of fact, shes on the opposite. I think that is an alienating factor for a lot of the elusive white males they are told they have to get. Recent polling has just come out that the data cited, 85 of those delegates will vote rather bernie supporters nationwide will vote for Hillary Clinton. 85 should not be enough, but the latest polling shows that the numbers are dropping precipitously. I would argue in part that that is because of Hillary Clintons recent choices. If Hillary Clinton wants unity, shes finding a very odd way to express it. Essentially sending a message to Bernie Sanders, not particularly delegates only, but supporters nationwide, that your time has come and gone. Our time is always. We will in economic and social justice, in challenging the oligarchy. We believe its time to get a definite government policy against wall street determining your economic policies. I think that just as we were told a week or two ago that this was going to be a unified convention, we are also beings spun by the Clinton Campaign that bernie supporters dont matter, i think thats quite incorrect. Steve Norman Solomon joins us from the floor of the Wells Fargo Center. We will be checking in with you during the course of the week, along with your colleagues. Thank you for being with us. We appreciate it. Norman thank you. Steve by the way, the News Conference he was at earlier today is on our website. The speeches as well. My colleague, peter, is on the floor with a familiar face to those who have covered Democratic Party conventions. Peter . Peter as you mentioned, this is a face and name that people know. If you have worked in the media or at a convention, maybe you havent watched by convention. What has been your role at the democratic conventions . In the past i have served as a media logistics planner. Planning for 15,000 of my closest friends to come here. They all want the best seats in the house, the best camera angle, and by the way, their competitors should get nothing. Its always been a balance of getting everybody to say a little bit of yes to everyone. I havent worked on the planning for this round, but when i come here i get to savor a job well done, i know how much thought had to go into each of those decisions that were made. Design of media space and flow and such. It was well done, they get to savor that and enjoy it. And i will tell you, its fun to come in here. I have been working on tv history, ive been working at the museum of broadcast communication. I get to see television today along with other media coming in to capture what is an important historical event. Thats what makes working on conventions so much fun and satisfying, knowing you are part of something bigger, something special. One of my favorite moments was back in 2008, doing all the changes that had to be done at the last minute to go from one stadium to another location overnight. That was great. It seemed like all the forces had aligned. So that when barack obama took center stage it was as though we , were in the best airconditioned, best staged then you you could have imagined. My other favorite memory is 1984. What did the logistics person behind the scenes do . They keep people from going from killing each other over space. The camera people and reverse podium shot people were about to tear into each other. Unless someone came up there. All right, i will come up there. I spent the whole thing during the mondale speech making sure that everyone behave themselves. From that vantage point, as the podium sees it, i looked out at the crowd and said that this is an amazing experience. This is what the nominee sees. This is why they get charged up and are ready to go on the campaign trail. You could feel the energy out there. As a matter of fact, i was also so relieved that we did such a good job planning that event. If there was an emergency, there were a lot of people to get out in a short amount of time, but everything worked perfectly. Peter are these stories in your book . Walter those and many more. How did you get involved . Essentially a friend of mine asked if i could come to help. Yes, i was about 12 years old when i started, as i chuckle with people. It was something i took to because i love organization. I love the purpose of this which , is to get the word out. These are people who work hard to be delegates. They have a message to get out. Part of the reason for the convention is the message is transmitted in every form available. Now its any medium you can come up with. Its all for the same purpose. Peter when we look at these skyboxes, what goes into the construction and logistic . Seeing just a skybox . Peter out of my mouth, i knew. [laughter] walter you have to protect all of the facility you will be using with your Television Equipment and then restore it. Then you have to make sure that the set fits. Making sure its the shot that you wanted. And thats for the skyboxes this goes back to the early 1980s. The standup camera positions, which are great because they dont involve quite as much cost for the organization. You simply remove the seat and sometimes you dont even but a platform there. And you are in the midst of the action right there. We are proud of the fact that the local stations didnt have the budget to do the skybox rehab. A lot of people watched gavel to gavel on cspan. A lot of people tuned into local news. And the five to seven minutes on the local news is where they get their snapshots of the convention leading up to the final speech. Steve author of watching tv, a decades of american television. Steve a friend of this network as well over the years, covering conventions as 1984. We are in one of the skyboxes, the suites. We will be the one place where we will have all of that unfiltered. The gavel will come down at 4 00 eastern. We are on cspan radio with a cspan radio app. If you want to check it out. Sharing with you a new app that came out from the Republican Party taking aim at Hillary Clinton. Lets watch. [video clip] welcome to the Philadelphia International air. You will find your baggage at carousel number two. The local time is 7 31 p. M. Enjoy your day in philadelphia. Steve that advertisement is called hillarys baggage. Were live at the philadelphia lr Court Philadelphia airport. It is kind of quiet right now. It is earlier. Expected to get more busy over the next 24 hours as the delegates continue to arrive. Teresa hargrove is the director at the Democratic National convention and has been a busy person over the last element we. Last couple of weeks. Thank you for being with us. Teresa thank you for having me. Steve walk us through the week. The key speeches and the themes you hope to a competent the days hope to accomplish in the days ahead. Teresa one thing that is important to stress is the theme, we the people. When we say its important that when we say we the people we mean all the people. Its important that we focus on all of the communities that make our party strong. Thats what we hope to accomplish through this convention. Throughout the convention we will have strong leaders in labor. Strong leaders in the economy. And political leaders that make our party strong. Steve its like that show beat the bands. We are going to try to beat the band in the hargrove. For all of this to come together, was happening behind the scenes for you and your colleagues . Lisa there are a lot of moving pieces that come together that make this a successful convention. We have impressive credentials operation. We took ownership of the Wells Fargo Center. Our staff moved in a month later and we have really transformed this venue. We have removed over 2000 seats to build the stage. Right now we have about 1300 seats in the floor. For the delegates, we have turned over and really remodel the boxes to accommodate media. We have a variant on a Strong Security presence. There are many moving pieces, many pieces we have together to make this a successful convention. Steve this is different in terms of the number of delegates. 4700, twice the size of what we saw in. Saw in cleveland. In terms of where you are putting the delegates, you certainly had to move to the area where it be the bold the bowl seating to make room for all the delegates and alternates, correct . Lisa we did. The delegate seating went from the floor to the lower levels of seats here in the bowl to accommodate all the states. We wanted to make sure that every delegate had a place on the floor. A place where they could see and be a part of the process. We wanted to be as accommodating as possible steve of course as possible. Steve of course, thursday evening, the traditional loon balloon and confetti drop. What else should be happening . Lisa we have some nice surprises planned for the end of the convention. We want to be able to celebrate what we hope is a very successful convention. I dont want to reveal all the surprises, but we have some nice things planned throughout the week. Steve what is your job this week . Lisa this week it is important for my team to get out credentials for all the delegate, all the participants. We are doing Something Different this year than we have in past years. We are delivering the credentials to the delegates in advance of the start of the convention. The delegates are able to receive their credentials a day before, so that they are able to plan any of the meetings that need to happen. Plan any of the meetings that need to happen. At the start of the convention we want to be very secret of the time so that we could sure that the delegates be with prior to the start of the convention we want to be considerate of their time so that the delegates will be where we need them to be. Steve so far the band is cooperating. This next question is an easy one, your own background. How did you get involved . Your First Convention and will you have a role in the campaign . Lisa i apologize, i missed part of that, but what i did here was did i get involved . My First Convention was 2004, i was able to do training in boston. I also worked in denver in 2008. I helped in charlotte in 2012, managing some of the events for the caucuses. This year i managed the process. You asked if i had a role in the Upcoming Campaign . At this point i dont have anything planned in that campaign. I dont have a role. Steve lisa hargrove, with the Democratic National convention. Thank you very much for being with us. We appreciate it. Lisa thank you. Steve the band is warming up, rehearsals are going underway throughout the evening. Outside the Wells Fargo Center, the final banners are being put up. The convention will get formally underway tomorrow. Lets go through the schedule again. Some of the highlights will include the first lady, michelle obama, with a speech by Bernie Sanders, with 1900 delegates in the Wells Fargo Center. Tuesday we will hear from bill clinton. The theme is a lifetime of fighting for children and families. Wednesday will be the evening for Vice President joe biden and senator tim kaine. We will also hear from president barack obama, coming in wednesday evening. And then Chelsea Clinton will introduce her mother, Hillary Clinton, as she formally accepts the democratic nomination, the first woman to ever receive a major party nomination. Check it out online on cspan. Org. Thank you for being with us. We are back tomorrow morning for cspans washington journal and a full week of coverage here in philadelphia. Thatnews this afternoon representative debt the representative Debbie Wasserman schultz plans to step down as chairman of the Democratic National committee. Hillary clinton released a statement saying, i am grateful to debbie forgetting the Democratic Party to this years historic convention. I know this weeks events will be a success thanks to her hard work and leadership. Senator Bernie Sanders releasing a statement saying heavy Wasserman Schultz has made the right decision for the future of the Democratic Party. While she deserves thanks for her years of service, the party now needs leadership that will open the doors of the party and welcome in working people and young people. And president obama had this to say, for the last eight years has hadasserman schultz my back. Her fundraising and organizing skills were matched only by her passion, commitment, and her warmth. And no one works harder for constituents in congress than Debbie Wasserman schultz. The Democratic National convention from philadelphia starts monday. Watch live every minute on cspan. L bunch, a columnist for the philadelphia daily news. Are you excited the convention is in town and is it worth it for the city . And a littlexcited exhausted after one week in cleveland. It was funny to get into the airport and leaving the craziness of one convention and here i am at another convention but it is exciting and we are excited to have you here. Welcome. Host are you glad the city is spending money to put on the convention . Guest i think so. I think the article conventions are an important part of democracy and they need to be held. I would like to see them more democratic. We may see that in philadelphia come of it i think it is an important part of democracy and it has to be somewhere carried if it has to be somewhat, why not told althea why not philadelphia. Good place for a chance for people to see what goes on here. Host there is a fight about superdelegates. Guest yes, absolutely. It, though the vote in the committee went yesterday, they will be able to bring that before, which that gets to my earlier point about opening up the convention. We may see for the first time and i dont know how many election cycles in actual contested vote on something. Not the candidate but a contested vote on an important issue because i think the superdelegate issue is important and interesting. The republicans probably wish they had superdelegates because a lot of the party elites were not happy with donald trump and superdelegates are with the party elites to put their stamp on the nomination process. On the democratic side, the situation is flipflopped. You have millions of Bernie Sanders supporters saying, the system was rigged against us as we were losing 500 connecting when the ballgame started. 500 to nothing when the ballgame started. It seems a good valid complaint. If youre going to have a primary system and say, our system is that the people at the party decide, then what is the superdelegate thing all about . That it wasbe implement it in the early 1970s and 1980s as a way for the party elites to keep control, to make sure that good people come to the convention, which is understandable, but also to make sure the next room candidate, some people viewed George Mcgovern in 1972, for example, as too extreme, and this was the way to nominate centralist candidate. Hillary clinton would have won anyway even if there had not been superdelegates but it would have been much closer and played differently without superdelegates. Our fourtht aside line for philadelphia residents. We want to hear from you and what you think about the convention, 202 7488003, is the number. Walking around town, you see a lot of Bernie Sanders supporters here. To have a lot come to protest be a part of this . Guest there are thousands. Leave the studio, i am headed 40 minutes outside of town to a campground in south jersey host a campground . Guest where hundreds of people are come over, certainly the east coast, and some farther to come to philadelphia to camp because there are no cut tilt accommodations no hotel accommodations. They will be marching, making a scene, and from what i can tell, people be taken aback between the contrast between cleveland, five and i just spent to six days in cleveland and i think the demonstrations were a lot less the people expected there, partly because i think there has been somewhat of a chilling effect. People of heard so much about the tear gas and the handcuffs that the Police Department purchased during all of my friends or like, hey, im going to cleveland this week and theyre like, do not get shot. Crazy stuff. It was nothing like that. Philadelphia will surprise people by being the opposite. Bernie sanders support is in the northeast, not that far, so you will see thousands of people straight into the city and they will be marches today, tomorrow, instead of the hundreds you saw in cleveland, i think youll see at least in the low thousands at some demonstrations and if not, more. Host will we see your story or column on the campground tomorrow . Guest absolutely. That fascinates me. That is why i am writing the column. Just the passion of people. It goes so much against the conventional wisdom of politics and the kind of savvy take that those of us in the media tend to have about politics because this is about the individuals and Hillary Clinton is the winner and bernie lost and he conceded the race and he has basically endorsed to the clinton. The fact that these people still feel so strongly that they want to be here, speak up to their issues, i think it is emblematic of the disconnect between the masses out there and the political insiders, and i think if you can go to a campground full of people the other thing is it is 99 degrees outside basically, so i mean it is kind of like the woodstock of heat and politics. Kind of crazy. I will be writing about that for tomorrow. Colling and from forest hill, new york, republican line. Go ahead. Caller thank you for taking my call. Mrs. Clinton made a point of introducing her v. P. As catholic. What does that mean . Anybody can sit in appeal in the catholic church. In the catholic church. To me, a practicing catholic follows the 10 commandments. Every baby is a gift from god, so why is it that so many politicians vote to destroy gods beautiful gift . See you in heaven, maybe, and may host marilyn in new york. Guest regarding some candidates, catholicism, interesting. Being a catholic cuts many different ways. She mentioned the abortion issue and apparently, tim kaine is one of the politicians in this country that does not personally support abortion but as a politician, i do not believe it is my job to impose that on the citizenry and that we should have reproductive rights basically. The same thing happened on the other end of the process with the death penalty. Tim kaine has also said that he morley does not support the death penalty, which is the position of the cap and church but he oversees or he oversaw 11 executions while he was governor of virginia. Being a catholic means many different things. He also went to Central America as a missionary for a while, inspired by his catholic beliefs, so i think his religion and his faith really is relative to who he is. I think it is a part of his biography. Host kathleen in ohio, democrat line. You are on with will bunch with the philadelphia daily news. Caller i have several points, but first, i watched the Rnc Convention with my 88yearold diehard democratic mother and she made amazing points, talking about how stupid it was that the media was focused on m elanias speech so much and that she got ted cruz sounded crazy, but donald trump made good points to her. He grew up working in unions and she thought he made that points, fascinating. I am makes sanders supporter, so we have differences. I think it is interesting that Mainstream Media has painted sanders supporters as a young. I am 64, involved in colorado, ohio with the Sanders Campaign and there are millions of people my age who supported his agenda years, 40 in the 30 years, and i thought it was interesting that tim kaine a bridge builder. My objections are to her support for the invasions of iraqis, that is where she built bridges as secretary of state, into syria and libya, and it think it is ironic that the dnc is being held at the Wells Fargo Convention Center because many of us do not want hillary to release her transcripts of their wall street speeches. Host all of that said, did you consider coming out here and joining the protest . Caller i sure did, but i am a caregiver, 88yearold mother and it is an honor and pleasure to do that for her. Thank you for calling in. What is your response . Things, one,le of i have [indiscernible] i was disappointed that donald trump did not address workingclass issues more. She mentioned her mother being 88 and growing up in the heyday of ohio was the heart manufacturing, many of them are closed, diminished. I heard little about that from donald trump. I think he was appealing to a motion, fear, but partsk if you are an auto worker in youngstown, ohio, and you lost your job and now you work part time to make ends meet, i have been Hearing Solutions coming out of the rnc and im not sure if we will hear it the best solutions out of the dnc. I want to hear what they have to say. Host you have been critical in your column about not releasing the names of the sponsors. Guest rights, and i had a chance to ask governor rendell about that in the earlier segment. It is a shame. He made the comment and it is true. Governor rendell in philadelphia because he generally speaks his mind, and that is why it is so disappointing that they want this information about the donors to the dnc health committee, the 60 million that it costs to come to the convention and they dont release the information. It is compiled, it exists to get a loan from a Governmental Agency in philadelphia. They released this Agency Information every 90 days, so they have these records and they will not make it public. Information was made public in 2000 and they will not say why or give a good explanation of why they dont release the information and why it is not transparent. You can speculate with so many Bernie Sanders protesters in town and they dont want the corporations that are not favored Bernie Sanders supo porters and they dont want it to be a protest, that is mike speculation, but we are at a time when we need more transparency. Barack obama promised he would be the most transparent president in u. S. History and he has not been. People have a lot of problems about request filled from the Obama Administration and this is part of the same problem and it is frustrating. Host mary in delaware, independent line. Go ahead with your question or comment for will bunch of daily news. Caller thank you. This is the first time i have been able to get in. I used to be a democrat and i left the party after nasa. My problem with the Democratic Party is they have lost touch with the working case. I dont care what hillary says, she is for it, tim kaine is for it, and with illegal immigration, you have more supply, whether american or legal, and you will not have wages go up because employers will say, take the job. Also, there transparency with hillary and lost it, she is lying i think the Democratic Party has become republican laced. That is my comments. Guest thanks for calling. I think you will hear those criticisms echoed from people in philadelphia and you make a good point regarding the transpacific partnership, which is the trade deal with asian nations. Hillary clinton worked on this trade agreement while she was secretary of state. Tim kaine, her running mate, has been a vocal supporter of the tpp. During the campaign, Bernie Sanders did not support this version. I read over the weekend that tim kaine is going to basically come out with the same position. I think what you heard there is voters do not believe this. Facen it just flies in the of their career records. They had been freetrade advocates. It speaks to some degree of the successful pressure that Bernie Sanders placed on the Hillary Clinton campaign and on the Democratic Party to listen to and maybee this rethink trade. I think a lot of voters are skeptical if clinton is elected president whether she will follow through. I am skeptical myself, to be honest. Host julie from virginia, democrat line. Go ahead. Caller good morning. Thank you for taking my call. I want to thank cspan for just being there and giving us the real deal. I just wanted to say i am a proud democrat because i support womens rights, protecting the environment, this party is more diverse than any other, to my knowledge. I do have several comments. I agree that this country should whopen to people to come in are fleeing countries where there are no human rights. I do have a problem with us providing food stamps, housing assistance, medical coverage for illegal immigrants. Thate a problem with issue. I also have a problem that we have not seen Donald Trumps tax records. I do not know why this issue has been shoved under the rug because i think it is mostly because it keeps so many airwaves with rhetoric to double the tension from this tax issue. Im angry that the socalled 2 has removed Bernie Sanders from this election. I am angry that they have manipulated us by forcing two nominees on us that pretty supporters did not want to see in office. Host we will leave it there. I think we got your point. Will bunch . Guest she brought up Donald Trumps taxes. I think what you heard there is i think donald trump is our deep paying the political penalty for not releasing his returns. It is pretty clear that whatever he comes up from monthtomonth, it is clear that those returns will not be seen during the campaign. A lot of people speculate this because maybe he is not as rich anhe says, and that would be investment if he was not a multibillionaire, like he says he is. I think it is widely known he would not release the records and that is already hurting him a lot with the voters and i think you heard that on the call. Host is there anything we do not know about these two . Guest [laughter] host what will we learn between now and november . Guest i think people will be watching for how they respond in different situations. To me, the most telling moments during the campaign have not been you things we learned about their biographies, you are right, we know most of their life history and story, but we do get to see how they respond to situations. There was a lot of talk after the horrific tragedy in a land of about donald trump and his response we came out with the tweet that seemed to be more like i told you so, this was going to happen and it did not seem to be a lot of empathy for the victims in the tweeps weet. In the t Hillary Clinton provided the more typical response traditional response. And for better or worse, we will see situations like that from now to november and i think that is what people will be watching. Can you imagine donald trump as the president or Heather Clinton is the president and how would they respond to situations . They are in prepresident ial mode right now, so we can get the article himself what they are really like under pressure, and that is what i think voters will be watching for, more than their biography at this point. Host another democrat, debbie in oregon. We are listening. Caller good morning. I cannot believe i got through. [laughter]. Was going to comment your guest was saying that there is a woodstock camp outside of town for bernie, people, i kind of resent that. Through all of the process, that is all i have been hearing, bernie is like a little puppy nipping their pant legs and all the news stations. They constantly kept adding in those 500 superdelegates that she had when she came out of New Hampshire . Won thein iowa, she town halls by six point causes, and the odds makers in daegis say that is impossible. Then she went into New Hampshire , i believe, for the primary there and comes out and she has copies 500 superdelegates, and they kept adding them into her delegates along the way. Actually, there were only a few delegates apart. Anger as au do bernie supporter . Guest older yes, i am 61 years and this is the first year that i have really understood the convention stuff. I always thought it was one vote, one person my vote counted and people said, nobody votes, and i was thinking, that is crazy. Why did they not vote . Host you heard what she had to say, but we have not brought up the leaked dnc emails. How significant are they going to be today and in one month from now . Guest i think going into the convention, the sense was that there was going to be a push for the deescalation between the tension between the Bernie Sanders people and Hillary Clinton people produce on it when he went to New Hampshire and endorsed hillary. Over the weekend, i have been surprised. Nobody expected the wikileaks and the emails to be released. That was a surprise, but i have been surprised by the way the fire has been soaked instead of put out. Tim kaine seems like a nice guy, but he is definitely more moderate and the type of guys president ial pick that hillary supporters were looking to see. Mentioned the trade issue, and there are other issues with the left wing in the party, and then write, hours releasedu had emails and i dont think there was an enormous smoking gun in the email, but it will show what people saw all along, this notsosubtle buyers coming from the dnc for hillary and against bias coming from the dnc for hillary, and i have thousands of people coming to philadelphia and they were already looking to put up a fight and now you have given them to more pieces of red meat, basically, so i think that will stoke some of the anger over the next four days. From jerry is calling philadelphia on her independent line. Good morning. You were on with will bunch. Caller good morning. Mr. Bunch, i appreciate and enjoy your work for the daily news. I have a question about the protesters in just mentioned. You mentioned they will be a ofh bigger presence protesters in philadelphia than there was in cleveland. How is your assessment of the convention is going to deal with that protest . Do you think they will try to ignore it, trivializing, repress it . Or heaven for bid, date acknowledge the legitimacy and validity of the criticisms of the party and try to integrate them into the proceedings . Host are you planning on attending . Caller i will be monitoring events from a low site and less a get pulled into the protest. Host [laughter] what does that mean . Caller it means that i agreed with the protesters and i worked at ground zero, and if time will be involved because i believe in what the protesters are doing. Host ground zero is the Wells Fargo Center. Caller no, the other ground zero, the convention center. Host the convention center. Thank you, sir. You heard him. Guest jerry made some good points. Forget, the way we do conventions nowadays, there is this law, this security zone, much smaller in philadelphia than it was in cleveland, but the wells wall along fargo center and protesters can only get so close to the proceedings. Asked or youer said, do you think it will open it up to the protesters . It is hard to do the way it has been set up. Protesters will not be getting [indiscernible] i think their views will be reflected. Bernie sanders as 1900 delegates out of the 4700, that is a lot. You can make quite a showing, and most of them are not the type of people who are going to ofl in line, so i think some what you hear out on the streets will be reflected inside the hall. Onwill see this vote superdelegates and there could be other flights as well four fights as well four fights as well. We still do not know if there will be a wall call, where all 1900 people will be able to cast their votes for Bernie Sanders or if they try to do this on a voiced vote, so there may not be drama about who the nominee will be, but if you are political junkie, there will be drama for the convention. Host the Convention Kicks off right now at 4 00 p. M. Eastern time tomorrow. Mike, north carolina, independent, your turn. Caller good morning. Thank you for taking my call. Sayinglling because i am i am an independent, but i never believed in really been with any party. It should be about issues more than anything else. In other words, if something was broken you a democrat, and the democrat did not want to fix it, would you vote republican . It doesnt make sense. It should just be issues. Obama, when he was running for president , he said change and transparency like mr. Bunch said. What do you know more than what in . Did before he came there was the transparency. People are frustrated. It is not fear. People want change, they want actual, visible change. , how do we get to 19 trillion . How did they get that far . Why is it that way . All right, we have a lot of questions on the table. Anything to add, will bunch . Story i think that is the of the conventions, cleveland and here, which is that the metaphysical between the elites and the kind of concerns that the average rankandfile folder has. When i was in cleveland, it was not quite comparable to what we see in philadelphia, but there were many donald Trump Supporters who just came to cleveland. I attended a rally on the first day of the convention, or you had bikers for trump, christians for trump, all these trump affinity groups and they wanted to may sure their voices were heard. I think that is what has marked 2016. People are frustrated, a lot of people, theyre looking for answers and i think the political system and set up giving people what they want, and i think people do cspans washington journal is my from the democratic convention. Up, we get a preview of the Democratic National convention including speakers and themes for the day. And then this woman shares her efforts to cover her expenses to be at the convention including turning to social media to raise her funds. And
