Of state for two reasons. The first of which i know, kentucky so excited that we are the 31st state in the nation that got online voter registration. Argue . [applause] we had thousands of votes, over 20,000 votes that utilize the service but now begins the hard part. And that is actually turning people out to vote. So my question, my question to you, kentucky, is are you ready to go vote . Let me hear you say yes. Yes. Depression is backstage and he needs to know youre going to go vote. Let me hear you say go vote, kentucky. Unita say it loud does yesterday i told the president that looked like maybe only 20 of kentuckians registered voters would show up. So are you ready to go vote . Go vote, kentucky. The second reason im here today, folks, this is someone who is close to my heart come economic that is literally seen it go up since i was but a weak teenager. Proud to welcome them at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in frankfort. He asked the president , she as the first lady and hope at the end of this year we will welcome them both back. He the first dude and she the president of the united states. [applause] so if you are liking me and you been watching whats been going on in the Republican Party, well, it is wrong for kentucky and it is wrong for this nation. I dare say that who the leader of the Republican Party would be, he eve ever thought he would hear the keywords donald trump, do you . It is the campaign on the other side thats fueled by racism, bigotry and hatred. On our side though it is someone who is measured, who has been tested, who i do believe its tough and has a plan for not only the commonwealth but this nation. Shes put us where we are here today. And now it is up to us. It is in our hands whether we will deliver that nomination on tuesday. [applause] Hillary Clinton is someone who is about fighting for those without a voice. And my question to you is, are you ready to sign up and show up on tuesday, folks wax. [applause] Hillary Clinton is someone who is literally dedicated her life to fighting for the underprivileged and empowering youth, minorities and especially i feel like i am young, young women like me. Will you be there to support her . [applause] Hillary Clinton is someone who importantly has given her lifes work, her every breath to Public Service, in making not only kentucky but this nation a better place. They love this state. When i say hey, i mean both her and bill and chelsea. They love kentucky. They love from all the way out easthese down west do right hern our capital city. But do you know what to love the most its the people of the state they love the most. And now the question before us is whether we will show up and be there for them. Release and the message that we are ready for a champion in the white house who will fight for the civil rights of all americans . Let me hear you say, yes. Are we ready for someone who will make sure our students can earn degrees and not. Com especially our case you students . Let me hear you say yes. Are we ready for someone who will fight for the working men and women all across this country especially right here in kentucky . Let me hear you say yes. Are we ready for someone who will not only crack but shatter the Glass Ceiling and fight for womens rights all across this nation . [applause] listen, i think its long past due. We shouldnt be having conversations anymore about equal pay for equal work, or paid family leave. We get Hillary Clinton to the white house, we get it done. [applause] so, kentucky, on we ready to show this nation that the commonwealth is clinton country . Get on your feet and help me welcome the 42nd president of the united states, William Jefferson clinton. [applause] hello. Hello, frankfort. [applause] first of all lets give another hand to Alison Lundergan grimes. E. She great or what . Alison, i told alison earlier today that if she become a television minister she wouldve had the Biggest Church on the planet. [laughter] im so grateful for her service and are support for hillary. I want to thank many people who were here but let me just mention a few. Thank you senator and former governor julian carroll. [applause] First Time Ever came to kentucky was when i was a first year governor in 1979. Julian carroll hosted the National Governors association. And i came here. My eyes were as big as dollars, i was so excited. Thank you, representative graham for your support. [applause] thank you former lieutenant governor. Thank you for your support. [applause] represented james k. , terry mills, rick sands, thank you call. Chair of the democratic party, susie kelly, thank you. And mayor, thank you so much for being here. With your son and daughterinlaw. And thank you to our field organizer who spoke earlier here folks, let me cut to the chase here. We are having an election tuesday. There are 35,000 potential votes in frankfort. If there is anybody in the entire commonwealth of kentucky that knows what happens education, health care and along the economic welfare of the state, if you have republicans only government, you do because if it were not for the Democratic House you would be in a world of hurt today. [applause] now, so, at its most basic level you know we cannot afford to have a republican president , a republican house, Republican Senate and a Republican Supreme Court in washington, d. C. Or you will not recognize this country in four or eight years. Thats the negative thing. Let me tell you the positive. You will admit this up in kind of an unusual election. [laughter] there is a reason for that. America is a tale of two nations today, because we are outperforming every other big economy in the world. We have almost 15 million new jobs now in the last five years. Thats the most with that said that as a democrat, whatever his name, who was president. [laughter] weve got more than 90 of are people with Health Insurance for the first time in history, although a lot [applause] some people in your state seem bent on doing what they can do to roll that back. Its working pretty well. Weve got the youngest most Diverse Workforce in the world, the best Technology Base in the world. Weve got a lot of things going for us. But 80 of the American People have not had a page raise since the financial crisis. And the income income, that is the one into a, it is, after inflation is 4000 lower than it was the last day i was in office. Why is that . Thats because for 400 years we actually have good records for 400 years. Its taken every single country outweighs 10 years to get over a financial crash this soviet. In fairness to the president at our party got our jobs back in seven years, but thanks to political gridlock, trouble abroad other things, most people have not had a raise. So we have a decision to make. I spent a lifetime as a governor and president , networking in america and around the world for the last 15 years trying to give people somethin something to lor doing to get up in the morning. Ive always believed that if people have a decent job and decent access to education and health care, and if the most importantly believed that they could make every today better than yesterday, and they could look forward to tomorrow, america would be fine. And we have been through many years without that being the case. So basically we have two stark choices now. In addition to all the problems that alison mentioned, the fundamental message of the other side is vote for me and i will make it like it was yesterday. [laughter] isnt that what it means . If i make it great again the way it was then. I had to put up a few walls to do it and pretend we dont have an interdependent world, but we can do that. Now, first i want to say depends on who you are whether you would like that. Remember what the great will rogers said. He said two things relevant to today. He said first of all, you do not belong to an organized political party. He was a democrat. But he also said dont tell me about the good old days. They never were. The truth is they were good for some and not good for others. But we cant get them back. So hillary says, what we really need to do is put america back in the future business. We need to take advantage of the benefits and opportunities out there that no other country in the world has, but this time we got to make sure we raise middleclass incomes, restore upward mobility, and take every area of america and every person on for the ride for the future. We cant leave anybody behind. [applause] my case for her is pretty straightforward. There are three reasons that kentuckians ought to vote for in the primary. One is, shes got the best ideas to create more jobs, race or income, reduce inequality and advance social mobility by tearing down the barriers that keep certain places concluding coal country, behind. And giving people who cannot have a good education behind. Shes really got some of the plans to do that. Enter numbers add up. And everybody says shes the only person left in the race and anyone whos looked at it whose numbers add up. People ask me how we reduced three surpluses when i was president. I said weve got a great new idea to washington, arithmetic. [laughter] i dont care how liberal or conservative you are [applause] how far left or right you get, once you think you can repeal those laws you begin to get in trouble. Shes got really good ideas. Shoot wants a national and for such a program while Interest Rates are low to rebuild our roads, bridges, ports, airports, and, and [applause] the stuff under the greater flint, michigan, is nowhere near the only place in america where children have elevated lead levels in the blood because we have left old pipes under the ground too long. And if we took them all up, if we took the ball up and lay down clean ones we could give every kid in this job a healthy future. Thats the kind of things we want to do. [applause] if we get every small town in Rural America access to affordable broadband can we could put every american the national economy. Thats Something Else we are to do. So we need an infrastructure program. Weve got to prove it every place in america can get its fair share of clean energy jobs. You say, well, we are the call state. Yes, it will continue to run on coal for some years to come. But that shouldnt exclude other things. The second most important state in america, solar panels, is new jersey. There are three states in america that get over a third of electricity or wind. One of them is texas, the oil and natural gas leader of america. Why . Because they can sell the other stuff and they like having cheap power rates and the like creating jobs in texas, and giving him, to people who own the land where those windmills are. We got to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time if were going to go from where we are to where we need to go. [applause] and the third thing we need is to bring more manufacturing jobs act to america. Every manufacturing job we bring creates 200 jobs. And dont roll your eyes. Weve brought back 900,000 of those manufacturing jobs were lost. Thanks in part to the fact that the president and the Congress Saved the honor industry and didnt allow us to fall into the great depression. We had the best year for autos last year. And we can do better. Theres a plant in indiana, listen to this, in indiana making mercedesbenz. 100 of which are sold in china. In indiana. Why . Because every year you can pay people in manufacturing a good solid middleclass income because labor is a false percentage of the cost every year, and vitriol, transportation and energy are bigger parts of the cause. So hillarys position is very simple. We are going to try to take away the transportation costs goes americas of the biggest market in the world. Say the transfer, make the stuff you and put americans back to work. [applause] and one of the reasons that she wants a big in ohio is that they believe in the 21st century manufacturing system. They know she was the cofounder of the Senate Manufacturing caucus when she was a senator. They know she gets this and we can do this together. And finally we cant forget that twothirds of our jobs for 20 years have come from Small Business. Now come i think the second most important bill that the president signed in the last 20 years was a doddfrank bill because it does stop wall street from wrecking main street the anybody tell you otherwise hasnt been paying attention. The problem is it was not supposed to apply to traditional Small Business lenders. There is a law on the books that has not been able to be forced during the downtime which is if you put an atm machine in a neighborhood, you have to consider businesspeople in the neighborhood for our affordable Small Business loans without so much bureaucracy, without so much hesitation. You cannot charge as much processing and 80,000 loan as an 80 million loan. She wants to get back to the Community Lending so we can get the Small Business going again in this country. Very important. [applause] so, you cant reduce inequality and increased opportunity unless we have more jobs that pay better. Second thing you have to do is to actually take affirmative steps to reduce inequality. What do i mean by that . We all know most of the gains have gone to people, all the wage gains have gone to people in the top 20 of most of the big income gains have gone to people in the top fraction of 1 . Why is that . Big reason is that more and more and more companies are being run for the benefit of their shareholders and top management at the expense of the employees, their communities, and even the customers. Ilogistics you an example. With the exception of a couple years when the president come with the stockbug raced ahead of the labor market, then we all caught up, about 65 cents on the dollar of corporate revenues went to pay benefits for employees. Its now been hovering around 62 cents on the dollar. If you just raised it three or 4 cents on the dollar, you would see wages rise dramatically. You receive middleclass Living Standards rise, and we would be living in a different world. People would actually believe a middleclass life is possible again. Hillary said we need carrots and sticks to get that done. First, whats i cared . Give companies that share the profits with their employees a 15 tax credit for doing at. [applause] believe it or not the are a a lot of companies in this country that do that. But not most. I have a friend who has been a partner of mine who came had many years ago as an immigrant from turkey, and started a greek yogurt company. Its called joe bonnies. So this guys got a couple thousand employees. Is about to take his company public. They say its were somewhere between four and 7 billion. He came here with nothing. Do you know what he did . Before he took it public he gave an ownership in the company to all 2100 people. Let me finish. And he gave them ownership percentages. Not based on how high they were in the company but how long it had been with the company. The one to been there the longest got the biggest ownership even if it relatively low level jobs. Hes going to make them all rich because they made him rich. Thats the way it america ought to work. [applause] then theres the state. D. C. Where carrier airconditioning is going to throw 20 people out of work in indiana to move their jobs . If they were losing money we would feel bad but they are not. That section of carrier made, listen to this, 2. 9 billion last year. Moreover, their Profit Margins were increasing not decreasing. And, finally, the union offered to say been that much money by reorganizing their work schedule. But they are under great pressure from activist shareholders, thats a fancy name for hedge funds and billionaires dont want to make all their money so they can immediately sell the stock for a gain and pay only 20 income tax. Now, i could fill this room with Academic Studies of economists showing that companies who came to their bases and tend to the workers make more money over any five to 10 year period than companies that run on a yeartoyear basis to please this activist shareholders. If the finance tail wags the economic dog you cant possibly be in the business of what you in business to do. So hillary said, we need to stop that. Lets stop letting to make a 20 Capital Gains on a year and a day. Lets encourage people to hold the stock longer so that companies can be run for the benefit of the enterprise, the workers, the community, the customers and their shareholders. Face of data 20 over five years. Dont give them all that benefit but given an immediate benefit if they share profit. If they do that will move back to 65 and well all start to rise together again. [applause] but that will not help the people who cant access the economy. You still have to access it, tear down the barriers to access. And the are many but i will mention three or four real quick that relate to kentucky. One is weve got to improve education from prek through college. The best way the federal government can do this, all that you in State Government know that the lions share of k12 education or prek through 12 if you have that comes to the state and local government. Federal government only has about 8 of the total budget. She thinks we spent too much of that on requiring too many tests and too little investment in improving teaching. The evidence is, the evidence is all the Research Shows that the most important thing you can do with limited investment dollars is to help teachers get better, to up principals get better, to help teachers work with each other to build a culture in of the school of learning and potential and possibility. There is world evidence on this. Thats why finland does so well with far fewer tes
