Good evening. I am not here because i am a north carolyn ann or an expert on the specific subject at hand and i am here because the heritage that the folks represent and the tradition that their hard work and guts will come in the wake of. I am here because the staples that i am ready to say were basic to this state and that heritage is basic to this wonderful work. And truly wonderful work that jay smith and mary had been doing on behalf of the institution that so many of us know and love. And so many of us have been fearful going through down without a peep. And names of course are frank porter graham. And terry sanford. And bill bradley. And all of whom believe a major point of an institution was not to serve itself but to serve the ideas within it. That it to say that there was not enough to go by the building that have you to salute what it meant. I got here because bill friday. We had worked together on the night Intercollegiate Athletics that was ran and financed. And i said. I dont know what i will do when i retire into he said come to chapel hill. Into i said you got the it. It came. It was wonderful to be in the place that is was admired for so long. One day he said to me as we were worried about the meaning of hiring a bigtime coach who immediately had discovered to his surprise of course that what had to him before was happening to him here which was some of his outlying an add junction assist and the were doing funny things with the players and access to money he said. You know. I was talking to a young woman who is here in the university who seems to know some things that are very disturbing if true. And i told her well i cant do too much to help. Why not go over to talk to the folks in the South Building and the Administration Building and it was mary willingham. And i did not think a great deal about that at the time. Exempt for i think that bill friday were telling me it must have a substance i worried as so many of us were about the indication of not much proof that all is well. And also as a sort of member of the faculty will go from timetotime to the meeting of the Faculty Council because among other things it is away to find out or should be what is the hear of the academic enterprise as well as the administration. And there i discovered one thing that is was going on was if your name was jeff smith and you got up and said prophet i can things about sporting you may have been an immediate pry yeah because were you. And one thing that i would tell but when jeff spoke was that people turned their head. And not to listen. But to somehow or another try by moving by not listening that what he was saying would go away. They were not partners at this particular moment he can cement that they were aiming for finding end. Jeff smith and mary should be educate nod matter what they were called and the university should say face up to that which they have failed to do. In the way of which would restore the integrity which was obvious and had to interest in creating a certain program. I had been in public life in one way or another, for a long time. And i was shocked to discover just how disgustingly incapable the leadership is what doing what happened to be done. And step up to the plate. Saying that we would mess up and we would clean it up. There was a reporter in here. That discovered how little the university wanted to talk about that which was obvious. There are people i would make up a name richard nix only. Pretend that the press is an enemy as opposed to what was did not with with the enemy. And it took a long time for this to undo itself. And i got madder and madder. I believed so much in the place that i had not grown up. And i got the opportunity to get this. Now. I never actually have been involved in a bad situation. Not only confronted hose were as with married. And prosecuted by those that would best be described as i wont do the. Jeff as essentially smeared them. And that their day. Came with such stunning clarity. And that which they had been warning of or claiming for a while was now validated by the universitys own money. Not because that one report finished this story. But because it made it impossible to pretend that the story was alive. In fact it made tim possible toying more that people in high places had been lying at the university and some of them could not stop lying even then. That is enough. Have i been told by mary. I could not go 20 minutes and i think that i am ready have. So if you. It is a good reid. And an it a scary read if by north carolina. And if the states. And the university. And 3 is a reminder that ed win burke was correct and the cliche is true. The triumph of silence of the good. And the faculty. Unc was largely within the category of the silence of the lambs. And the administration was largely in the category of if i just close my eyes it will go away. This book will tell you oh you it happened. And some ideas that they had about how it would be kept from happening again. And i cant tell you how proud i am of the both of them frank porter graham. And bill friday would have been so this is a great pleasure for me to introduce both of them. [applause] some teams we change our names because we like to do that because we do not want people to know who we are. I still am mary. And this is i have known him only as jay. But maybe have you changed your name receiptly. Is that true . What happened chapel hill. And how and why the administrative and faculty leadership failed to provide that leadership so long. 2010. And 2014. So will you find the details in the book buchlt really. We think that. The book is something greater itself. The scandal that we believe is part of the emblem attic of what is with wrong with big Time College Sports at the moment. How an Academic Institution would be coopted by a big time athletic machine and the educational consequences for the athletes themselves when that happens and how it will happen. And how pervasive. It will become. And how everybody will be affected by it. And learns to stay silent. Go the other way or actively to fascilitate the maintenance of the system. You know the particulars, i am assuming. Many of you know the particulars about the actual course scam that was at the center of the particular manifestation of academic fraud. It occurred in the center of gravity for the fraud that occurred in a single department. Tragically and the department of africanamerican studies and wearing an Administrative Assistant and alongserving chair developed a course of actions and courses on the one hand and bogus lecture courses on the other hand that functioned as an independent study. And used the courses as far as we are concerned the vehicles of eligibility. Eligibility for the athletes that needed a break. And who were not particularly strong students or were not inclient today do the university work. Or for whatever reason of the maybe they were injured needed the time. They needed the time. And by passing them through the particular courses. Is it is torn to point out in the book that it was not the only department that was initial involved in bending or lowering or ignoring the academic standards. And there was plenty of other fact umenty and the departments that bent to the pressures that are invariably exerted by an athletic enterprise in big time sport uses. Courses and faculty philosophy. And geography. Of the and a few other place thats offered course thats were free rides for athletes. And they used the fleet of courses to keep athletes on track. And academically. And on the field where coaches could use their physical laborers. We hoped actually to show you a couple of graphics that would illustrate how it worked for the individual athletes. When we put them on the screen. They will not use them. We will talk briefly. I will talk briefly before turn it over to mary about a couple of individuals who have experiences that show the system really hitting on all cylinders. How it worked and functioned and how academic counselors and the Academic Support Program of unc exploited the loopholes for the purpose thats we have mentioned. The individuals one of the most famous agent leetsz in unc history whose transcript for us is it is public. So we can talk about that. Are there any. Thank you. Thank you for your help. And dan cane and acknowledgements. And that pride. Thank you. The with the fact. That phantom transcript apparently. We were going to show you that it is a couple of thing about it. And at the end of the this issued semester and the residents of unc. The gpa was. 57 he was rocking it. Not doing too well. And we will have a 1. 57 gpa in or to have athletic participation for the upcoming season. In unc routing him to a 11 classes out of the next 17 courses. 8 of the 11 were paper classes and guess what he did really well. Did he rally well in the classes. And this actually happened a checkered career that he would have. Fueling below the eligibility bar. And the course of the summer by taking a few of these paper classes. Now more disturbing case perhaps. And occurred about alias of register chapter 7 of the book found itself with a lower gpa after the first two semesters. In fall semester. And flunked facing an uphill climb and the academic counselors the first summer after his first year in residents got very creative. They found the easier math class that he failed to get through. He had it removed from the transcript. And from this they found him in a paper class. And by julius. And most brilliantly. They persuaded Debby Crowder to schedule the instudy this sl irregular. And threehour or other course. The problem is that he would need a lot of hours and high grades but he could not register for nine hours. If he had done that he would need the approval the dean they didnt want dans looking and scheduled a twohour study for register instead of 3. And guess what . He rock it had. And he got an a minus. He have too up over the eligibility bar. And the feel in the fall. Never graduated however. Never played in the nfl. And the case is much more egregious as far as we are concerned than the Julius Peppers case. At least he made his money. And made it to the nfl. And the experience. Representative of so many athletes. Nothing. No education and didnt get the name called nothing. His experience as far as we are concerned tip identifies athletes that are basketball and football players. In unc and across the country. And what happened was egregious and singular. And awful. Thingsly happen everywhere. And all of the pressured. And they are working the otherhour works. And often in the universities. And not prepared for the work so counselors will find them ways to keep them alive and to keep them a float. They learn that the inrusts and so on are part of the athletic machine. That is something that he would have in the firsthand and seven years in the accurate digit support program. We would play a math game with how many credits that the young folks men mostly in the basketball and football needed to be eligible. With what they needed and it was just gone this week an eligibility. And not really about the education at all. But all about being an athlete. And athlete first. And being a student. Maybe. Second, third or force forth that is the system. Carolina and the schools. In particular across the country. And we know now that we are hearing from people that are getting into the conversation nationally. And jack. The Athletic Director of notre dame has joined the conversation this week. Saying that we would have to talk about you know. Really semi proi pro. The profits. Of athletes for basketball and football. And who are watching right now on march madness. And would you have to ask yourselves while they are away for the 15week semester form weeks in the semester that the mandated by caa and institutions for fulltime hours. And you have to ask yourself. Could we do that . Could we do the 12 hours of academics and the grueling schedule that they have . Grueling 18 to 22yearolds. And looking around the room that maybe someone you have the children in the age. Bringing them into carolina. Before the first year. We would put them right away. Into the type of boot camp where they are to take classes and to have athletic training. And with folks. And a couple of weeks when we visited are being awaken at 2 00 in the morning. To eat three peanut and butter jelly sandwiches to gain weight. I heard the stories in caroline a so we are doing a lot of work with the young men to get them ready. And the first season in the fall. They are not getting a college experience. And you are suppose to go to college. The first semester to get to know the campus. And no where the parties are. And the professionals are. And friends would be. Classes and inform grab something to eat. And to watch film. To go to practice. And study hall and on and on and on and they are exhausted and tired grueling. They do this because they love their sport. For many, many years, they are the guy. Of and or or the gal that we have sports like Womens Basketball too. And for the most part. We talked about athletes. Profits. The book touches on many of the olympic sports as well. And the sport in carolina will pay for other sports. So we do have to look at it. And talk about separating this out this. Is all different. Yet the ncaa lump its up into one category of the college sports. I wonder if we can show them the few figures that are interesting to show. You will find numbers in the book. What is really interesting. About the particular lineup of the 18 athletes that took multiple paper classes and earlier 1990s is that if you you probably cannot see them. If you study care agree. The gpas that were earned in the regular courses, will you find here. Other courses. 19452 2. 016789 you will see that a lot of the guys that had gpas under 2. 0 are in parallel at least. In danger of falling. And if you look at how they were helped by the multiple course thats they took here in the blue couple. They are in the high 2 and hes a the low 3s. They are getting bs, b minuses b pluses. As, and a minuses and there was a b. What happens is that. When you combine a lot of low performing courses is that it will even out okay in the end and will you get your gpa above the flesh hold where it will need to be. Even i cant see this very well. So there are other courses outside. And you can see that you can see how the courses functioned and what is so striking about this is that they were the first 18 players that were sent to julius on more than one occasion. They realized that he was handing out gifts. And they sent players to him. And time and again to get the gifts. Gifts elevated the gpa to where they would need to be. Here you can see the actual paper class advantage for the gpa. Again. I realize that you cannot see these very well. But number of the paper classes taken and you can see one person. A lucky soul would take 18 paper classes. And 18 paper classes and the gpa and all other classes 1. 56. Dismal. Clearly not eligible. Had it not been for all of the paper class thats got his gpa back to 2. 3. Or semi respectable 2. 3. This is a sample of what we came a woulds. In our approval of the course records. So the point of this is. That these guys did not get real educations and they were suborred nature today the needs of the athletic program. And the teams. Coaches and their own athletic desires too they were denied the real educations. One of the problems with the front door that we will admit that the students and athletes. And particular that they are not able to do the course work. So set it up for cheating. And because what are we going to do with a guy who is reading even though the provost will disagree with me. The statistics forked education will tell us that our black hales in particular 10 in the country. As it is are reading this at grade level 8th grad id and our football and basketball players are coming to us and not be paired for the rigor of colleges. White males their numbers are not much better. A little bit better. So there is a literacy crisis in the country. We are not dealing with that. That is a separate issue. It is a k12 problem with the Public School system much and the bringing in athletes that doch meet. With airline caroline a and the application thats we will take 4,000 students. Highly competitive. We have recommend ages that are floating around congress right now. But. If you are going to bring the guys in. Women too. Lets be honest. And can bring them along for a real education if it will take whatever it will take and the contractor agreement says that next change for the world class education. What we will show and cheat and what we will see all over the country. A great case study. Maybe that is not happening. And real education. So many of them. And watching them on gameday as consumers of college sports, right . With the carolina and staff. Of and the africanamerican studies department. In all of this. And all the way complicity in all of this and there is a great example in the book. But it is like. For an athlete. So this is an idea of how controlled they are. In this is an example with the football. That a paragraph that we would read as a read specialists that would i have me read to you. So you can see the grade level that you are reading at. But quickly. The stark expression of the effort to control the players bodies and minds. To command their loyalty to the machine. Is found and reveal in the documentary film School College suppose. If you have not seen that. You will knee to look it the up. Leverage against them when needed. And posted on the door on the locker room is an infant infant. See that is the word. Say it again. The sign that identifies misbehaving individuals and reminds them who the master is. I will not discuss the following players that are selfish. Lazy. They have inform could not cement of the team. They cannot help to you win football games. Can you believe that . Can you believe that . The existence of the sign makes a mock reef College Players being students first and not only offensive that they would allow bullying and the intimidation of the aspiring professionals within the student body but coach left side threaten to brand the players and ego tifts in the eyes of the nfl scouts. Percent peck tichl employers and does that seem to be wrong to anybody . This is not what college is supposed to be what is all about. Of in the classroom we would not make a list on the board of the students that are failing tifts that should not get into the law school or some not get into medical school. We would never do that yet the guys are hopes and dreams are stattered each and every day. This is such a controlled environment. And it is really an issue. A civil rights issue as taylor tells us the social justice issue. And we really hope that cheated can become apart of the National
