Having read the book i can say even if you havent traveled 260,000 miles to the moon you will still be able to relate to the insightful realistic and hopeful wisdom he shares in the book. And while it may have been a coincidence his mothers name was mary andrews upon but his grandfather and father served in the army air force. And then to become enamored and was two years old when his father took him on his first airplane ride and a chronic the when they landed on the moon on july 20th invade the historic moonwalk was also named to the eagle. A was a Fighter Pilot and one on to earn a doctorate from m. I. T. And nasa would turn him down. To secure eight spots out of 6,000 occupants and then to become a Rhodes Scholar applied twice but not accepted. To make a bed dramatically different had enough failed to become a Rhodes Scholar and in the ambitious city that is a vicious. It to be the Guiding Principles to take the apollo o levin mission awarded the president ial medal of freedom as well as the champion for veterans. And then to draw awareness to the cause that says get your ass to mars. [laughter] if a bloody kitschy be possible for impossible tonight and Mission Control director thanks for joining us. Please give a warm welcome. [applause] [applause] thanks for coming tonight to. This is the second house of worship this year. And i was still grateful there is to of them right there. He has the original nt has the limited edition i have been working with buzz eight and a half years and i will say a few years ago people would say how long have you worked together he would say not long enough . He doesnt say that anymore. [laughter] i kind of call myself his mother. My title says manager Mission Control director to buzz aldrin he calls me the Mission Control director but i have no control. [laughter] you will see that shortly. I will try but i guess we have to figure out where to start she told your whole life story so what can i touched on . Should we go back to the beginning . Adam and eve . [laughter] philippines . Earlier than that. My father . He graduated from school at age 15. And then went to clark university. With robert goddard. So he got a masters and networking and a doctorate degree in through world war i. He was writing his thesis. Imbrued bootstrapped his way and the first assignment. And now was to the philippines. And was an aide to billy mitchell. There are a few more old people. But that is the Army Chaplain by the way that he married jessie ross who became jesse moon to have two older daughters and a son and then they come home and come back again. And then they would to work through the pyramids. So finishing up the air corps Engineering School to become right field on the air force base. Between 1920 and 26 with the aviation officers from world war i and those were the big leaders from world war ii. Things were a little slow in getting a job with the oil company and guess where the offices are in new york . Thirty Rockefeller Plaza and somebody comes along to say would you like to play a role or a cameo . Of course,. If you havent seen it you must go watching a. We have a ball. And want to get your life because really have so much time and they have questions when some point it decided to have children that he was first and then baby does came along. People always ask how did you get the name does . They assume from a Fighter Pilot . That came later. So how did you get the name . My sisters could not pronounce the brother. So buzz. That is where it started. Ever since. And just so you know, his legal name is buzz aldrin and he changed in the 80s so i say the legal name to save that is what it says on the internet. [laughter] said he did the first ride at age two in the high end jan model plane propeller. 12 passengers. Painted to look like an eagle with a head in the wings and tail. The name of the spacecraft landed on the moon. I like eagles. [laughter] interestingly his father space to people like the right brothers any space bird really well because he is from that era. We had a basement of the early aviators. There is a producer or something and hollywood by the name of jimmy doolittle, you didnt know that did you . No i did not. He was a boxer. But he was also a test pilot. He was the one who was the first to have a hood over his singleseat seaplane, he cannot see out at all. Just instruments. He took off, flew around, came in and landed. Firstperson to fly an airplane totally on instruments. He also was the first to do an outside loo. Even i have tried that. Inside [laughter] now and inside loop is this way. And outside loop was this way. The g forces are at this rate. I have not tried that. You still have time. [laughter] to try it good whos got an airplane . Village of the head for a minute. Where the gala airshow and they have the blaze flying around. Kind of like the blue angels, the red arrows with theires acrobatic team. We show up in black tie. Do you want to go up . And that . No, anyways, they go out and once he was up there, they started doing acrobatics. You want to try one . They do one of those dolls. And then you fall, fall. It is called a falling leaf. And you feel like that. So he does that and then made two of these other things. Gs i can see it in the sky. How many times have you done that . Ive never done that before. Youve got time i am saying. Tomorrow. Lets go back a little bit. I know you love jimmy doolittle. So lets jump ahead a little bit. He he graduated. Well, not quite. He went to west point at 17. T a1 actually, he was quite rebellious because his father wanted him to go to the naval academy. You didnt go why . The long story. West point teaches leadership. Leadership. I will stop there. You probably should because theres probably maybe people. We are in church. Where are we . Are we in washington . Op some of you may have heard off the severn river. I like to Severn School to get ss the exam to get into west point. Usually says he gave seasick and thats why he didnt go in the naval academy. You kind of rebelled against your dad and went to west point at the age of seven team. 17 and a half. Almost the youngest. 19471947 was the unification act, when they split up the services and put them under the defense department, said the air force became a separate service. They didnt have an air force academy. However, we knew that when we graduated that one quarter from west point in one quarter from beantown, annapolis [laughter] would be granted the great privilege of joining the air force. So that is how that happened. Where we are. Lets jump ahead. We dont have much time. See became a Fighter Pilot. You went to korea. There is a couple of important things. Have you guys ever heard of oxford, england . Rhodes scholarship . Failed ones that west point, went to pilot training. Just about to go to korea. They were looking for creatures, theology student i think in the east coast. I didnt make it again. Ill tell you, my career wouldve been a little bit different if i had gone over there. We went to oxford last year and we were meeting someyou scholars. What do you think wouldve happened . I wouldve gone to the moon. There is this one and struck her in dallas, the fighter Gunnery School las vegas and he knew i was going to go and try for this Rhodes Scholar again. He said they hope he gets it because he is going to get over korea and some cheney sky, i got a road scholar and mad men. That reminds me of my favorite story of him. Can you tell it . He tells long stories. Knows his wing man in korea. I know the river. I know. You didnt sell it. Nevermind. Alu rive the Northern Edge of north korea and that is who we were work in fighting against. On the other side is manchuria. You are not supposed to fly their. But the russian pilot, that North Koreans are over there. Occasionally, some of our boulder squadron commanders would lead a fight and they were shooting down a couple of eggse north of the river. After about a week, the commander got shot down north of the river. One of the west point guys whoo was lying on his wing, the investigating board comes along and wants to know all thethe tr details. So he told them the truth of where they were. Messed up the rest of his career, putting battler and has filed for telling the truth. You learn a lot of lessons likei this in and out of the military. [laughter]r] okay, lets get you to space. Can we get you to space. I want to get these people and i think they have questions. I want to tell you right now. Dont ask what it felt like walking on the moon. Unless youre a kid. I told the kid it was squishy. Theyre coming you got youruy answer. Lets get to space. Before we get to space, he washs in korea and then he was at the air force academy and then he went to germany and he served with ed wade from apollo one. He died in the apollo one fire. You is that west point on the track team. When we got in that squadron, the two of us represented the squadron in nato gunnery exercises. So i knew he could shoot betterr than he could. Ecology happens that im going to apply for that astronaut program. Is after he left and went to michigan. He calls me up to 1962. They had started mercury seven. He said that some holiday spirit and qualified, so i am going to. Apply. I said well, i can shoot gunnerl better than you can. And i am working on rendezvous in space. I think nasa would like to know how to do that. Maybe i could help him out. So i applaud. You are pretty stubborn, so he tried again. If that first you dont succeed, try, try again. You dont sound so excited. Ac you got accepted. Ro astronaut and your microphone is getting wonky, just be careful. He became an astronaut. We all know that. Lets talk about gemini. Originally come you almost were going to fly in gemini. Well, i hope train the guys. Donald Douglas Built the mercury spacecraft and they built it a little bigger so you could put a two people in it. So they had figured out different ways of rendezvous and some other people were pretty bold. Lift off and go right straight for them. Neither of these were very good, but mine was better than theirs. I wont go into all the details, but it was a Fighter Pilot type rendezvous. I Work Training some of them. So i went to the boss and said, you know, i would like to really fly one of these flights to rendezvous. He said nothing. The list comes out. Jim lovell and i around theten. Back. When not five, they have a crew for 11 and 12. A so the backup crew becomes the e crew went 13. But there wasnt any 13. Thats what you call a datat dee segment. Woe is me. Hold on. The nature buoyancy when did she do that . Was that when you knew . Now, my backyard neighbor, charlie bass said, really topnotch test pilot in our class, he was on the pride crew. And the snow stranded at lewis, dave didnt quite make the turn and it crashed into the hangar for the spacecraft was. Ironically, both of them were killed. So that is the primary crew. The backup crew takes over. The crew who is going to fly doesnt have a backup crew. But here is lovell and auburn. He became the backup crew. Rew that means there is a crew for 10 and 11 and we will fly on thn last one. That is the way things happen sometimes. Just making lots of scratching noises. We are running out of time. U if i can call somebody with my hearing aid. I know you guys thought the Senate Hearing we were out lasta year. His phone rings. I am like no, no. Nd i thought of some friends of ours getting him to wrap this torre out. I do think it is funny. Let us know if its friendly internationals base station. Wee anyway, youve got to get up to space. Chop chop. Yeah. Lets just get you up to space. The first time i asked from a set of his dough easy mac grandma could. Net. Maybe your grandma. R] i bet ive got something new that you havent heard. Our mission, we rendezvous and dock with the achievements they scrapped. We were scheduled to throw a switch, which would like the engine and it would take us up much higher. Mu to do what . It apart. So everybody looks mahler. Okay. It didnt work. Not everything happens. There were several different interests and extra vehicular activity, the spacewalk in, floating outside the spacecraft. The spacecraft is going in orbit 17,000 miles an hour. Going together. So i did three different spacewalks. By then a half hour set the record. The last one no, lets go to the first one. Is that where your site theme . No. The first one was taking some night photography, alter violet. So lovell was find the spacecraft very carefully. By that time, i open the hatch and a standing up in the hat. At i didnt have a seat belt as a matter of fact. So anyway, he shut up they he su thrusters because of a thruster fires while we are trying to take a picture, it is not a good. But that was the first healthy in space. It is right here in the boat. Right there in the book. The lighting is not very good. In the wrong direction. Alice gobbles all. Fault. He was in charge of that. So lets jump to apollo now because i want to give people a little bit of time to askons. Questions. The interesting thing and try to tell this one fast. We headed back pack. They were afraid they were going to have another little nonsuccess, so they canceled it. I assured him i knew what i was doing. Training underwater, first guyre guy so what brise macs . You wanted to be george clooney. This is in november. We were still given talks, speeches. You are in the barrel. You are giving speeches. We came back from a flight, so even into january of 67, we came back from a trip. We got us by the crew chiefs, two of them, very sad. We lost the apollo one crew on the launch pad. They had a fire hall. All three of them were killed, including my very good friend, ed white. That caused a bit of a delayht before the next flight could be ready to take place in 68, october of 68, apollo seven. Neil and i were assigned on the backup crew for a flight and a things were switched around because it looked as though the soviets had flowed around the moon and she and they did it the second time and everybody thought that they would put a cosmonaut and do that. Ul so they shifted the second flight. Frank boardman as the commander and neil and i were on the backn of crew. At one time, local was with this, but then he moved up toth take collins plays. So they flew to the moon on apollo eight and read from the bible genesis christmas eve. Quite a movie next. And then we are in 269, march, apollo nine, flew the lander and earth orbit. Apollo 10 and may lose the lander in lunar orbit, kind of a dress rehearsal to the next flight which was apollo 11. What you dont know is backup a couple years, 1967 this is the story wanted to y tell. I know what you are going to say. They come off the assembly line. One, two, three, four, five. They are all overweight for a landing. Inures less . And yours was . Number five was overweight except the mac better wanted his commander to land on the moon. So he thought he could adjust the book says little bit and trimmed a little weight here and there. He went to see the Program Manager. George, if i can reduce the weii weight, let it be a lander. Of course i will. And so, we would like to have at least one more man did not return it to you before the end of the decade. So reduce the weight and it became the spacecraft that apollo 11 had. Had it not produce the weight, the first landing would havefi been marshall six apollo 12 mid september. Didnt happen that way. My good friend, his name is in the book. He is one of the ones who dedicated the book. I dedicate this book to the trimmers, outofthebox the thinkers and seatofthepants innovators like me. Especially to my dear friend, Neil Armstrong and michael collins. Unfortunately, passed away a week before the book came out. Really wanted to go and give it to him personally. The vacuum is very innovative. He wasnt just a maintenance officer in korea. While i was fine, he was taking care of airplanes in a different way and then he did some different test job when nasa ended up being the Program Manager of one of the landingect spacecraft. A couple years later i did meet him and we really saw eye to eye on a number of themes flying airplanes, using drop tags. Those are always good things in space except when you use such an enormous one as this big shuttle did. Lets not go into the shuttle program. Democrats get you on the moon because we are getting low on time and i want to ask him questions. I want to talk about, we know that a lot of people assume neil said the first words on the moon, but actually it was you. What were your first words on the moon . Magnificent desolation. Those werent your first words on the moon. Contact high. Evening when we touch down . Of course, but who was trying to oneupsmanship. Depends on the day apparently. Neil goes down. He is hopping around but notice he can walk around. You are going down the ladder. You come out well, i had to send the camera down from the silly rate up a clothesline here and when he went down, he chipped a strap that was part of the clothes line. Said he gets down at the bottom, hook the camera and says the camera down to him. Thats kind of silly, isnt it . Comment on that, when we are through with all of this stuff and weve got a big rock boxes, we can put the box they are. I am up above. He is down there. We break up the rock boxes. Dont say that an asset doesnt think i had. We really did think ahead without one. You are going outrtially partially he fir i had to type them out feast heard feetfirst, the way navy guy goes down the ladders. Anyway, he picked up some dust and paint at the contingencies and old. So i could look down and he was flipping around. It was another trouble at all. U i didnt need anyone to guide me out. I remember the check was. Im going out on the checklist says partially close the hatch. That sounds like a good idea. As i go out, i said i am going to partially close the hatch, and making sure not to lock it on my way out. Youve always got to grow some comments here and there. Im going to tell you one more story and then we will let people ask questions. If you want to get ready. People probably recognize this famous photo. A lot of people think it is neil irons bound. As you heard earlier, buzz sent the camera down chewed mail. That means the alarm strand took this picture.
