Like she answered the phone and he said, where is he . She said hes in the bathroom, mr. President. He said isnt there a phone in there . And she said, no. He said, put a phone in there. So i came out and peggy said the president wants a phone in the bathroom. I said forget about it. We forgot about it. Next morning same time, anytime the same place the same call. Some he shouts at peggi, he says i told you to put a phone in there. And he said, yes mr. President yes, mr. President. By the time got out of the bathroom there were two Army Signal Core guys in my office and the phone was installed. That was when he waned you all the time. I just and secondly, he saw he saw things always the way to too something or we needed a law we need some help. Another none of my kids i was in hospital in virginia, in washington. My son joe swallowed a about of as prison and the president called and of course i just ran. I didnt leave a phone number. And finally gets me at the hospital and he said what the real are you doing there . I said my son swallowed a bottle of aspirin and hes two years old. He said thats terrible. We shouldnt have we should make these people have these bottles so that little kid cant open them. And thats why most of news this room have trouble opening our method sin. Its called a child safety act. [laughter] but he knew how to take care of people. Elementary and secondary education. For years we had been trying been on the democratic platform to have elementary and secondary education. They were able to block it and the evan jill cals and the secular jews were able to block it if it did provide aid to parochial schools and it couldnt make progress, and john son started working on it and it got more complicate with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 because now we got this charge that, it was going to be more money for blacks. And Adam Clayton Powell was chairman of the house education committee, and president johnson finally says, adam, you got to leave town. And you got to turn this over to somebody else. Some of you may remember thats when Adam Clayton Powell went to biminy and he said he wanted a congressman from brooklyn to try to put the bill together. Kerry was in a district in brooklyn that hat orthodox jews, roman catholics this array or incredible clinton area. The fact that johnson knew that was incredible. And kerry came up with the idea of leasing books. Leasing secular books and leasing equipment to parochial schools. Johnson started selling it. The wonderful meeting with Cardinal Spellman from new york, billy graham and Arthur Goldberg standing astride the white house pool. They were in their clothes. That is the hottest room on gods earth. The hottest room. And johnson is working on them. In the background is bill moyer and me in i have in my office and wait so is hot in there you could see the sweat through Cardinal Spellmans and they finally agreed. It was fantastic. Got the bill passed. And then he said to john mccormick, the speaker of the house, hold the bill up. If you get a bill and you dont sign it within ten days theres a pocket veto. Hold the bill for a month. And mccormick said, why . And johnson said because i want too sign it on hugh kerrys birthday. We wouldnt have this bill without him and he did sign it on hugh kerrys birthday. Host how did he know so much about so many people . I mean, im told that he had the phone number and the name of every member of congress on his desk in the oval office with little notes about what they might need or might want. How did he assemble all this . Where did he get all this information . Guest he accumulated it. It just was absolutely stunning. And it was invaluable to him. He loved politicians. He spent time with them. He knew when their wives were sick when their kids were sick, or when they had a problem or didnt. And he knew what would move them. It wasnt always hugs and kisses incidentally. We lost we needed to raise the debt limit once, and in the course of hearing it we lost the vote. We lost six liberal democrats voted against raising the debt limit, and we had this meeting and johnson had long sheets of everybodys name so wed count votes, for against undecided. And we had the six congressmen and we were going through them, and one of them, dick another continue jerry from Westchester County lovely county in new yorking said the war was taking money away from people that needed housing. And poor housing. And johnson says, joe, call up inge recashing hull him and tell him were putting a big Public Housing in his district.
