CSPAN2 New Jersey State Library Rare Books May 22, 2017

Gaured and preserved these materials as well and its this early collection of books that actually is the foundation of the state Library Research collection today. Im often asked which is the oldest book in the collection. We do have a book or a pamphlet from 1496 which is our oldest item but its only seven pages long we dont feature it as a book. Our oldest book is this one. 15 pa and printed in switzerland. The interesting thing about this book it has legend, as often the case, legends are not true only partially true and the legend about this book is that it was owned by philip in germany and he was a close friend and thinker during the protestant reformation. What led to think to believe that it belonged to him was notations throughout the book and sold by samuel, the book seller as copy, most likely because he could make many if associated with someone famous. Scholars say that the writing does not match his handwriting. So unfortunately that particular legend is not true, however, its still interesting to think of this book of being around at the time of the protestant reformation. It was definitely from a scholar at university and so it comes from a time when thoughts about religion were changing and then around the hundred years later you get those same people affected by that change and thinking about religion coming to america seeking religious freedom. Some of them wind up in new jersey, this is the first book that we know that was printed within new jersey. Its the 1727 and printed in 1728 most printing about new jersey had been done either in new york or philadelphia or in london up until this point, but in 1728 a temporary Printing Press was set up in burlington, new jersey in order to print paper money for the colony and the legislature wanted it close so they could receive the printing of the money and at the time they did that, they also did this book. So this is the first known printed book within new jersey. So over here we have what we consider the one of the founding books of the new Jersey State Library and it was a gift to the legislature from the first pointed governor of new jersey lewis morris from 1702 when new jersey first became a royal colony until 1738 when morris was appointed governor, new jersey and new york shared the governor so this morris was the first time when new jersey and new york were not administered and even though at that point they had their own courts and their own legislature, they shared the governor and here we could see his signature, this is the gift from his own collection and what it is, journals of the houses of parliament during Queen Elizabeth and maybe just wanted to remind the legislature who made the laws and where the laws came from and bare bear in mind we have first speech that he gave to the new Jersey Legislature and he reminds them of what their job is and he says in the speech, all the moral virtue seems to be compromised under the terms of justice and honesty and it is god only can make so but this is the business of the legislature to make it dangerous for men to be otherwise and i think that ties in perfectly with the map here and the warning of, yes, god may make us good but its the legislatures job to make sure we do not do bad. It was printed by another famous american john peter zanger in 1738. Now in 1734zanger has gone to prison because at that time they imprisoned the printer rather than the author. Zanger went to prison because printing things in support of morris who was a political opposition. Then over here, we have what is one of my favorite stories of new jersey, its in colonial period but its a little later, just before the revolutionary war and the story start actually in 1768 and at the time george the third was overthrown in england and william franklin, the son of ben franklin was the last royal governor of new jersey and he was thought to be a fair governor and people respected him, so at the time new jersey was divide intoed east and west and the east jersey treasurer was called Steven Skinner and he was in the habit of keeping the east jersey treasury in his home. He would put it in his office in a locked chess within his office and the story begins one dark stormy night, as stories so often do, it was rainy and dark and person or persons broke into his house by a window and stole everything except for 100 pounds. It was 6,700 pounds they stole which was everything that east jersey colony owned at the time. The next morning the theft was discovered by his apprentice and immediately skinner alert his boss, governor franklin, franklin then issues this proclamation, this offering of reward at 50 pounds for any information leading to the capture and the return of the many and then down here, skinner offers 100 pounds of his own money in addition to the 50 pounds. William franklin also talked at the time to the attorney general, the council and chief justice who decided that there has to be an immediate detail inquiry into what happened so skinner and the apprentice come down and testify in front of the council and closely questioned and the apprentice tells how he came down in the morning, the door was locked but when he opened the door the window was wide open, the room had been ram sacked, there was only a 100 pounds in the which he is and they had layed the sword in the table and why they didnt wake but after close questioning the council that it was an inside job but they say that skinner had not decided to enclose care. Thats a lot of money. He says this will bankrupt me and my family. Nothing happens then for several years and he could continue his treasurer. In 1772 a new assembly is convened and they take up this issue again and this is where we really start to see the change from the colonial mentality to the revolutionary mentality. They start to demand that skinner pay back the money. They demand that the governor replace skin we are the treasurer of their choosing, well, this is unheard of because the governor is the representative of the crown, its his prerogative to appoint people. The governor says, no, the Assembly Still want a new treasurer and they say we are not going to fund the government until you give us a new treasurer and so finally skinner is persuade today resign by the governor and then they put in someone of the assemblys choosing and so this really represents the change in thinking. Skinner by the way never repaying the money, war breaking out. Hes a loyalist, he flees to canada and the governor is arrested, but, i think, there are two things for this story illustrate really the change in thinking but also if you know anything about politics in new jersey and how we never have any money sometimes i think, well, things could be worse. We could have lost everything. Here is a look at upcoming book fairs and festivals across the country.
