And they are actively trying to preserve the culture. We see their history all around us if we are at shasta lake and shasta dam in particular. There are lots of controversies, its been a rough history. Its important that we learn about this history so we dont we peat some of the mistakes that weve made. So today we are going to be looking at the california Indian Library collection. Its part of our local History Collection which is called the box collection which is named after may boggs and its a really important piece of the History Collection. So the indian collection began at uc berkeley at the library and then decided to disburse the collection out by the state to 20 different libraries and so what happened the collection was divided based geographically so what we got here in shasta was the information on the native americans from our particular area. So particularly we focused on the winto. We also did the yanas because they are kind of the outlying tribes. One of the reasons this is such an important collection because its because it consists of items that may not have actually ever been published. A lot of it is original research material. So its a very unique, its not information that is easily accessible. Here at the library any member, any member of the poetic any one can come in and use the collection. It does not check out of the building, however, we are very open to making photo copies because these are one of a kind items. So we are going to see just i just highlighted some of my favorite things out of the collections and items that gives you a good sample of the different types of materials that are in the collection. So this is a sample from the collection, from some of the photographs. They are famously known for the intricate basket and we do have very close collection to the collection and some actual baskets. You can see that. Well, they used natives plant material to make and weave the baskets and they are known for their patterns that they used actually. So this is really important that we preserve this art form. The baskets were used for a variety of things whether its carrying water, carrying food, just daytoday life living, each of the individual native american tribes did have their own patterns that they used so these are examples of patterns basket waiving that was that was done by the wintu in this area. The other thing that i wanted to show are the photos and these are really important because these are actual real photos of the wintu here in Shasta County. And we have had people come in and actually find relatives that are located in here. We have people that have never seen grand participants and they are able to find pictures. So these are real actual photos of the wintus, for each one of the pictures, it does describe who the picture is of and where the photo was taken. And it also shows us to shows us the type of dress that they wore during the time period. This is one of my favorite books because we use it so often. This is a handbook of indians of california by kroger and it actually is a good description of all the tribes in california and we use this a lot for children specially in fourth grade who are doing reports on native american tribes. This allows us to access all the tribes in california. So this next book is also a book that i use very often because this is about the wintu but its written for kids and when the fourth graders are assigned their report to do, a report on native american tribe, we can give them this book and it it very simply lays out how they lived, talks about the houses that they lived in their dress, those are the typical questions on the fourth grade report so we use this book allot. Now, the next thing im going to talk about is a very important book, its not in the california indian collection, it is in our local History Collection and this is the wintu dictionary. There are not very many of these out there, and as you can see from the pages, its not in the best of shape. An important part of preserving the wintu culture is, of course, preserving the wintu language. It is a dying language, there are no very many people who speak wintu anymore. I do work with the redding rancheria. Local rancheria. Every once in a while they do a wintu class and we always get the book out here and thats available for their students to look at. And this is another interesting one. Its the history of indians of shasta and what i find most helpfuls is done chronologically so what it does is we can look and it references any article that appeared in our local newspaper, on the subject as native americans. So sometimes i get questions, i want to know what was happening in 1870 with in terms of native americans and so we can open this up and go right to that time period and we can see what was happening from the newspapers perspective. We do have the map which is a key part of the election because when im helping people i can show the map and show where redding is located and Shasta County is located and its a nice depiction of where all the tribes in california are actually low located. So the library helps support preserving the wintu culture with this collection. These materials are always available, any native american or anyone can come in and look at these materials but we also have other elements that are built into the architecture of the building, our pavement outside, the community room, the concrete, theres a wintu pattern and we have the redbut plants. People can see a pattern on the floor. This collection is important because it plays a vital role in Shasta County an important part of preserving culture of our county.
