Cspan2, find a full schedule on your Program Guide watch online anytime that booktv. Org. Welcome, everyone. Deeper lecture series featuring trail manager professional historic trail marks party. The topic women of 1812 because we are kicking off womens History Month, the month of march. A great way to kick it offef tonight. And we are excited for this series, ranger for the first in a National Historic. A great Political Economic and emotional. These women are faces and ages and their bravery in this nation and the american revolution. A few words about kate, visual information specialist and prior to working to Museum Director and conservation assessment and also for nader for the war of 1812 bicentennial 21222015. It went over a number of years and i think it is the National Museum setting the stage for history. Without furtherd ado i can put you in good hands so please take away. The first person to hire me, thank you. Theres a good chance. Im going to share my history. I am kate, Partnership Coordinator and the trail manager at National Historic trail. Were going to talk about women during the war of 1812 but i just want to give a little background start. Which is kind of why i am here today. Lester restarted a partnership and of course this kind of noon think of a it. And around the bay for us to partner on some great program. This one is called the trail ambassador program. We work with underserved youth and their families and put towns around the bay. We also had shortsighted exhibits and deck tours with general public. Will be doing it again this summer. Stay tuned for more about that. So i also want to say, when i was asked to do this talk we thinkak about what date should e due . What thursday makes most sense . When i realized march 3 was open for me too do a talk i was like nobrainer. Went to the special shout out today it was set the site is National Park and national memorial. Happy birthday to fort mchenry the headquarters of the starspangled banner today is also National Anthem day. Dave 1931 congress designate stars bengal manor is ahe natiol anthem. A weak realized that jeff and i that we have to march 3. This is perfect. It was meant to be. So, back to the topic. Women in the chesapeake during the war of 1812. We talked about the starspangled banner National Historic trail followsta the military movements of the british and american troops during the war. That led up to the National Anthem. The perspective of the sort the civilian perspective a is also o view the history and offers a more holistic approach. Im so, strep mention in honor of womens History Month we wanted to go ahead and t focus n the stories of the women. During this time women were predominantly in domestic roles. When the navy showed up people and their wives are upended. This great place in many their homes, families, levelheaded in grave danger. Those who had husbands who serve found themselves the primary caretaker of all domestic life of the family. As through the observations and actions during this time several of the torment made history. Will be exploring the events of 1812. And i want to put out there im not going to the whole military campaign overview. Im only going to be highlighting those events that have a female perspective. We did a geographic range. For the virginia partners any of the flotilla or historians the battle were not going to talkpo about those fo apologize. It was so big great presentation. Sources of information were some of the stories. I have through letters, obituaries, also several years after the fact. Has gone to local lore. Its kind of hard to cross clarify these. But the ones ive chosen to talk about tonight do have a caveat of truth. Have talked a couple historianss you said we think there other kinds of stores is not to start spreading fake stories about the work 1812. Move main smi do not cover try. Theres also stories of women to trail partner sites. Amazing new partners all throughout the chesapeake. I wanted to make sure i could i can highlight our partners. So with that, lets get started. I dont to assume everyone is an expert of the war. A quick promise overview of 1812 for some background context. The first thing i would like o o say is thehe work 1812 with a three year warping june 18, i do talk to fiber 17ths of 1815. Its important for me as they want to start talk about the events in the chesapeake they keep 13, 14 and 15. Was three years. Looking at the timeframe 30 years after the american revolutionon verdict is out war with france. Restraint on their resources. They are starting to stop american merchant ships that angers us. Also to be behind native american rates on the western frontier there is British Occupation some british soldiers and disputed land on the borders. With the Canadian Border excuse me. All the sins i finally declare war onn june 1812. Do a of more than 500. More than half of the british armies are in ours are scattered. We were little unprepared for this. Primary events are going to be happening along here canadian u. S. Border. In britain did not want to find out. There were two drops of the troops that are here they decide to target the chesapeake fits a decisionmaking political power. So it 1813 the british come to america. Every 1813 in Chesapeake Bay they do this with two years. The nations economy the royal navy at the time is conducting raids are photogenic although we have grading and eluding coastal towns. For the first was in the first things they do is there an upper bay the chesapeake. We are proud things are inpatient content by thehe work 1812. Through sgt highlight here all have a bit of folklore tribute to do that. They also involve setting up to the british. I think is pretty great as well. We are going to start chronological. Often during the war of 1812 was one town that had successfully held off the british invasion twice. The other town old tribute for you leaving to that information, but had the bold and 20yearold africanamerican woman believed to have helped being tortured by the british. So when the british approached brecht at whitehall which is the home of henderson. They were told they could not reach the town by water. So they asked to escort them on foot to leave them there on foot. And she was reluctant. They had promised her money ande promised her, her freedom if she were to do this. Apparently she could have taken a direct route but instead purposely misled them and frustrated them so that after a while they turned back to come back burn all that they could. So its Pretty Amazing to think here is theos woman whos enslad purposefully misleading people who possibly could have freed her. There were some people that doubt whether or notot the story is true. There are multiple Public Records, including the census record, death notice that is it woman an africanamerican womanl who lived during this time. She supposedly was a woman claiming to be heard gave an interview telling about the story and her obituary which is highlighted here on the screen shows the incident. The other thing sounds like a little bit of truth is the british withom do this to find local guides and sometimeses foe people to serve as their guide in the landscape too help them navigate. It is not think this could have happened. That was the first story for 1812. Just a couple days later on may 3 act by the british. Many of you may have heard the story morning of may 3400 british troops come and begin to burn and pollute the town. The militia whod shot volley fire pretty much fled. one man did the bestie could to be a oneperson defense. Obviously he was overwhelmed, overtaken. Was a prisoner of war on the british and taken out to hms maidstone was anchored offshore. So with the local legend is that his 15yearold daughter matilda went and secured his freedom. I dont know how much influence that she led the charge but there is Public Record is a Public Record of being of the delegation from the towns that went out to secure our nails released her not sure exactly what happened. So most likely she was part of that one of the youngest members. What i think is really interesting put into todays term retirement a 15 year old l girl. She is a High School Sophomore going out with other townspeople but going out to the people who had just raided her town. Burned down two thirds of the building to plead for her fathers life. I think that just shows the amount of bravery and courage would not necessarily expect my 15 year old girl. Its Pretty Amazing. The other part of this it still might be this is not as proven, is coburn posted person in charge of these raids of the british admiral supposedly so impressed by her he gave her gold mounted tortoiseshell box is now in the collection of the maryland history and culture. The sole part of the whole legend. And then shortly thereafterre three days later the british sale up. They fired uponsh the british which they dont like. Initially going to teach people a lesson and sure enough and georgetown earned it. Andd then came to georgetown. When it came to georgetown a woman by the name of kathryn apparently fled to save one house that was occupied by older family woman that turns out she was able to save the house next door that she was renting. There are records of buying the house she had been renting. 1836 in the 55 went to guide her obituary is the first record of this happening. Theres no contemporary account of it happening during the battle. Good did this happen . We have to askur the question through the two structures she supposedly saves still stand. They have been combined to an inn and restaurant they are serving. It also is a couple stories of him hearing these please and backing off. Listening to when women would come and ask him to stop. Does not seem crazy who seems to be a pattern in his behavior to do that. This is truth to the story. So following these three events the british continue doing raids in chesapeake during 1813. Mentioned earlier twice unsuccessful. Also attacked queenstown and queen annes county. The british at the wintertime left the chesapeake and came back in the spring of 1814. And it was a different game. When they came back napoleon had been defeated. I have been put toward fighting france. 14000 battle hardened soldiers were coming to america. One of the primary targets was a chesapeake region. Brought Economic Hardship to america. One of things they do in april in charge of the north american station, puts out aom proclamatn saying if anyone wants to come to the british side is not specifically call this out. This is aimed toward the enslaved population. There prettyy successful. They get 4000 People Freedom seekers to come to the british. This is Pretty Amazing they are hitting the economy based on slave labor. There also gaining the knowledge from some of the local knowledge of the waterways in the landscape. So thesh british continue. The summer of 1814. With joshua and the flotilla. And then in august of 1814 they decide to go to washington. So, this is where we are going to hit our next three, but only they provide educated white perspective. What we know about them is a locker through their letters. They give the town where they meet where they meet militia soldiers easy too victory. In the british are able to go into washington. A woman by the name of rosalie calvin is at rivers dale. She is able to witness the battle from her secondstory window. She claims she saw several cannonballs of their own eyes. Most likely these were rockets but she was able to witness it. Orearlier had escaped belgium because of napoleons forces. They escape to come to america and here she is she also makes other notes in her diary to gain what was going on. What we may not think about will my thinking about the battle. One of them being her husband hope to bury some of the dead after the battle. She notes having a bedroom full of rifles, pistols, sabers most likely coming from they had buried. Extent oxon covid apartment. A woman by the name is a cool illustration you can feel the explosions and such. Describes it as indeed a day in the night of horror. What i find interesting though she is english they are british sympathizers. The work with them hard for their unable access english market. The land forces are going into washington there is a naval force going to support the army. Its interesting sheet notes here she is, how much it hurts her to think of her country as the enemy and talks about finding three concrete rockets. Detector house. Enter tour turmoil sheet she was feeling for having to look at her own countrymen at that. Exited to washington. Story of Dolly Madison i could not not do dolly. You asked why didnt i do dolly you dont. So many of you know what happens here. The battle being a british victory, they get word its time to evacuate the city. Sheet meanwhile had set the table they were planning for victory party. He is instructing her helpers to save as much as a kinsman she did not do it herself. She had the state of mind the battlefield she does it make the to try to save what she can. Some of them being National Treasures today. So, following the invasion of gwashington, the british go bak to the ship. The maps up with the blue spots were talking about the stories. We kept the land and sea invasion of the city. Twentyfive hours. The bombardment stops. And americans of the river sees the flag flying over the four whoso inspires becomes a National Anthem. That flag was made by household ofom women. Mary is a woman born in pennsylvania. She experienced ship and signal flag maker. In 1813 shes 37 commission to make two flags 138 by 42 the main garrison flag and the other 17 by 25. She got the only one doing this. Short 13yearold daughter carolyn hes got two teenage nieces and she has 13yearold africanamericanca indentured servant helping her this. Her mom, who is older it might be helping her and mary also had enslavedll someone they probably were helping as well. This would have been all hands on deck. As a volunteer then the Historical Society it now history and culture where they recreated orbit by 32foot flag. I had to look this up. The ideas they do this all in the same time frame partially seven weeks. The project are 218 volunteer logged over 3700 hours. As for a red flag and it was a lot of weird talking to flags with a small team of women is Pretty Amazing. You have a quote from carolyn later in her life members her mom to sing up until 12 00 a. M. At night to keep working on this. Want to call her out because here this groupro of women so following the unsuccessful attempt on fork mckendrick the british then came out of baltimore and the majority of the British Forces left. The treaty was signed by representatives december 24 and was finally ratified signed by madison on february 17, 1815. End of the war. The story, not yet i one more story to share with you. Thats the story. Remember the proclamation i mentioned cochran had done 1814. The British Forces still are kind of a lingering in the chesapeake. They were not completely out. Two days after madison ratifies the treaty, 21yearold lucinda hall and her daughter and five others escaped enslavement in maryland. Click boarded the british ship hannaford her husband jacob was art enslaved by someone else and was already there. They resettled later and nova scotia. I dont know about lucy per se. And of having a son named williamnd hall 1827. William would going to join the British Military to become the first black person for the first nova scotia and to earn the Victorian Cross for slavery. One of my favorite spots to do the hunting background images. In the lower prince georges county. There is a place where you see a sunken road imagine british soldiers this is what it would have looked like marching through the air. The put myself there. That would be what it was like two years ago. Privately owned, is one of the best preserved desert the war of 1812 the battlefield and his been pretty much the same way. Back in 214,858 major archaeologist. She let a crew there. What transpired. Which is pretty cool. Some of the more almost picture yourself as a witness history. When my favorite memories and bicentennial years here in baltimore werech in honor of desmet womens History Month is a stitching project. The women who lead that effort marched with king fled from the Maryland Center for history and culture to fort mchenry so through baltimore, down baltimore street i have a memory of kate following that flag trying to tweet an instagram and everything onn her phone she ran across streets in baltimore.
