FBC Risk And Reward With Deidre Bolton June 15, 2017

On the same team to get this country moving again. Maybe thats a pipe dream. Know whos . Looking into that story tonight, welcome to risk reward, im Liz Macdonald in for deirdre bolton. Were getting an update on the condition of republican whip steve scalise, hes described as critical and now complicated. Those two indications, critical and complicated conditions, possibly requiring more surgeries. The damage is extensive and dangerous. Doctors say the bullet that tore into his hip traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding. Now the entire scalise family, as well as his congressional aides, will be at tonights baseball game saying thats what steve wants. Were also learning more about the shooter and his violent past as authorities continue to scrub through his cell phone. His home in illinois and his van, and his car. James t. Hodgkinsons arrest record including a history of domestic violence. The 66yearold home inspector was a Bernie Sanders supporter, he loved rachel maddow, he traveled from his home in illinois to alexandria, virginia living out of a van. This happened in and around last march, he shows up. When he gets to alexandria he ramps up antitrump social media rants which he said it is time to destroy trump and co. Back to the baseball game tonight. More than 20,000 seats have been sold and raised more than one Million Dollars already thats double last years amount. Were told over 500 tickets sold an hour. Meantime, President Trump is moving the nation forward by stopping the flood of red tape and doing things like creating jobs including this, redirecting tens of millions of dollars potentially wasted on duplicative government jobs training programs. Also the labor departments blow to budget, directing that taxpayer money to apprenticeships in trades like construction, manufacturing and health care. First, lets take a quick look on the markets. The dow closing down slightly. Tech stocks continuing selloff today, thats a trend since last friday. Back to the ball game tonight. We are going to show you new cell phone video of republican congressman rushing to help wounded steve scalise. You can see it highlighted here. It is truly remarkable footage. You can see them racing across to do all they can to get to their wounded colleague on the field. Lets take this to steve forbes. Steve. This is the heart break of that moment. They didnt know what to do. Bullets are flying, trying to help steve scalise. And noted thankfully many times, the two Capitol Police officers is the reason you didnt have a fullscale massacre. You hear the shots in the video, you can tell the gun was a very powerful one, and a pistol is no match for it, but the police went in there, thankfully the guy got distracted and lives were saved. Liz we also have more detail about the shooter and his background. This comes from the local newspaper in illinois, the Belleville News democrat, quote, his life was struck with tragedy in 1996, foster daughter wanda ashley stock killed herself at the age of 17 in a brutal manner. Ashley doused herself with gasoline and set herself on fire inside her car on a rural road south of belleville. What are your thoughts there . Since we dont know the facts of what actually happened, but this guy, cruel man had a record of abuse with foster children, so lord knows what really happened. Liz he reportedly grabbed one daughter by the hair, right . Yes, and he was a bad neighbor. The neighbor testified last night on tv about this guy shooting in the woods, possibly, could possibly have hit other houses, warned off. Always had sheriffs and Police Officers going to his place because of his behavior, and what the real bottom line is not what he put on his website or on his facebook, but why in terms of these foster children is this record of abuse now coming out. Who approved it . Who checked up on those kids under his care . How did he get them in the first place. Liz those are questions that hopefully will be answered in coming days. Dereliction. Weve seen it in new york city sadly time and time again with foster kids. Liz yes, and seen the poisonous political rhetoric on his social media pages, embedded in there, its time to destroy trump and co. He sent that out in march when he was in alexandria. He came from illinois to there. Every policy, according to whats a toxic environment in d. C. , its like a matter of life and death, right . Bernie sanders says tens of thousands of people are going to die because of obamacare reform. Paris climate deal, mass extinction says jill stein, do you think the rhetoric will be toned down . For the moment, yes, but i guarantee you in a few weeks its going to be ratcheted up again, they cant help themselves. Some people unfortunately, its one thing to lose an election and say we vow to oppose the policies of the president or new congress or whatsoever. When you use such incendiary rhetoric making it sound like you make changes in health care. Youre going to throw millions of young and old people in the streets and in the gutter. No that stuff is so extreme and misleading. Okay, politicians do it, but why the media . Yes its the gotcha politics, the cycle of the d. C. Cycle. Ultimately the only way you deal with it is new norms are established. You step over a line, youre a pariah. Liz its not just gridlock, the toxic gridlock, incumbency is a problem. Some of the leadership is around since the nixon era . Term limits, advocated that when i ran for a Certain Office and its time to dust that off again. Liz clean house, you say clean house. Lets repot the plants once in a while. Liz good to see you, steve. Come back. To someone at scene of the shooting he is getting ready for tonights game. He is republican congressman gary palmer, at the scene 20 yards away from the shooter. Congressman, thank you so much. Were so grateful to see and you have you on the show. Can you put us at the scene . What did you see . We were taking batting practice. Id already batted and was in the field. Steve scalise was at second, i was at short and i heard a gunshot and i immediately yelled to trent, that was a gunshot, and he said, no, and he turned around and the guy was pointing the gun directly at him. Its a miracle he missed trent, and trent yelled get out of here. We started trying to find cover as we were moving across the baseball field. He fired two more shots and one of those hit steve. I saw steve go down, and we sought cover behind a big oak tree outside the fence. Steve dragged himself off the infield dirt, probably 10 or 15 yards into the outfield. We were yelling at him to stay still and stay down, and just, i mean, it was an excruciating time that passed before we could get to him. Liz sir, i could see the heart break that youre feeling, and its just so devastating to see a wounded colleague there, and you want to help them. Were split screening right now, showing footage of the people at the scene, your colleagues racing around trying to help. That must have been so frustrating for you. Well, Brad Wenstrup who is a doctor, was a medic, combat medic in iraq, we were together. The Capitol Police ordered us to move back to another area of cover behind a concrete block building, and brad and i moved to an area where we could see scalise. As soon as the shooter was down, i got to the field as quickly as i can, i could see the emotion in brads eyes as he tended to steve. He kept steve alert, we kept asking questions, fluids in him. Brad was doing all he could to put compression on the wound and stop the bleeding until the paramedics could get there, and i would also like to mention that special agent david blair who was wounded in the gunfight hobbled out to the field. We tried to get him to take a seat on the ground to check his wounds, he refused, he would not leave steves side. Liz that is also more heroism coming out of the story. How is the team feeling now . Well, im sure the emotions liz i understand, sir . The emotions will come out. Liz theyre going to come out. Is there a plan to have a group prayer . I mean weve seen a lot of the Democrats Team praying. Is there a plan for that . We are totally feeling you right now on how hard this is. Go ahead. Yeah, we want to pray with the democrat team. We want to do this for steve, but we want to do this for the country. This is an extraordinarily tragic way to begin this game, the day before, but to come together tonight not as democrats and republicans but as americans and people who believe in our form of government who understand to preserve this form of government, we have to have civil dialogue, and weve got to come together. The countrys coming apart on the edges. Were fraying the culture, and we, i think we are the ones that can set the example for everybody else, including the media, including the people who are doing social media. Including people through the who are really frustrated, were all frustrated, but we have a history of being able to work out our differences, and weve got to demonstrate that tonight, that we can come together. Liz sir, steve forbes and i were just talking about the atmosphere in d. C. Are you saying a rethink, a reset, are you seeing outpouring of support coming into your congressional offices and throughout congress that maybe democrats and republicans can come together and unite for once to move the country forward . Your final thoughts. That is my hope and aspiration, and as much as its up to me, im going to make every attempt to do that. I understand elections have consequences, one party is going to have a majority, the other is not. Both parties in and out of majorities. But my aspiration is to try to work with my colleagues on the other side of the aisle. Were the majority, were going to try to move our agenda, but i want to be sensitive to what they think and see if we can find a way to Work Together to move our country forward. Liz congressman gary palmer, thank you very much for your time. Good luck tonight, hope you hit a few. Thank you very much. Liz thanks again. President trump signing a new executive order today redirecting federal money, likely potentially wasted. Weve got four dozen overlapping jobs training programs. Hes redirecting that money towards apprenticeships in things like potentially highpaying jobs, construction, health care, manufacturing. Wouldnt you know there are six million jobs in the united states. The president is blasting a witchhunt, a new report that says special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating the president for obstruction. Lets get back to the report we have coming in about the shooter james hodgkinson. We know he hated republicans. He supported Bernie Sanders. He loved rachel maddow. He drove his white van from illinois to alexandria, virginia to attack the congressional baseball game. Next up, the republican congressman who represents that district that the shooter lived in, he says his office got ten calls from the shooter. Hes congressman mike boss. Hes here to talk about the conversations next, dont go away. Deartheres no other way to say this. Its over. Ive found a permanent escape from monotony. Together, we are perfectly balanced. Our senses awake. Our hearts racing as one. I know this is sudden, but they say. If you love something set it free. See you around, giulia whoa thats amazing. Liz republican congressman mike bost, he represents the district in illinois where the shooter james t. Hodgkinson lived. Congressman says the shooter contacted his office ten times within the last year. Congressman bost joins me now. Sir, thank you so much for coming on the show. We appreciate it. Congressman bost thank you for having me on. Liz what was he contacting your office about . Congressman bost every issue that was the issue of the day. There were ten communications, actually nine of them were by email. One was by phone, and they were he didnt agree with my positions but they were never aggressive in nature. Weve looked through them. We combed through them. Probably the most aggressive one was if you vote for this, well remember you. That means to me, ill remember you in the next election, not that Something Like this would happen. Were very, very close on trying to watch closely, we have had times in our office that somebody crosses that line and we have to call the Capitol Police. Yesterday morning, we were only an hour after the shooting, right after it was happening, we got the call from the Capitol Police, mentioned his name to us and said, okay, what do you know about him . I thought he was in the district. They said hes the shooter. Instantly we started checking our records. Those ten times over 11 months he has been in contact. But like i said, they were by no means aggressive in nature. Liz did they sound unhinged in any way . Congressman bost no. Liz strange, right . His calls never appeared threatening and you would have informed Capitol Police as you have done in other instances. Have you spoken to him personally or anybody in your office . Congressman bost no, like many offices around the nation since this election, you have protesters that are outside. He may have been a part of those. We dont know that for sure, but he was active with the groups in the area, and he was a political activist, so what was your initial reaction when you heard he was from your district . Congressman bost it was my chief who brought it up after he talked to the Capitol Police. Your heart sinks because your emotions are running wild. Yesterday morning there was a group of us in a prayer meeting and a staffer came in and said scalise had been shot. I said hes at the ball field, and we know, and things boiled after that. We were in the middle of that, including calling our spouses and children and family and telling them im not there, its okay. Were trying to figure out whats going on, and all of a sudden im the first one before the press, theyre calling me and saying what do you been this guy . Hes from your district, so we have heard from congressman marcia blackburn, Claudia Tenney from new york, they get threats routinely. Do you personally get threats . Sure, i have had them over the years. Liz are they getting worse . The threats increasing in number. Congressman bost remember, im only in my second term. Theyre worse than i had in the statehouse, lets say that. So you know, but weve got to stop this. We really do. You know what . And ive said this so many times to the media. With this job, conflict is inevitable. Combat is optional. Were going to discuss, were going to debate. We may even become frustrated but weve got to show that we can Work Together even if we disagree, the system is set up for people to disagree but come together as a nation. Weve got to stop all of this. Now is it social media . Is it the 24 Hour News Network . Its a whole lot put together. And we have to be the ones to take the lead and show that, look, i might disagree on this policy, but that doesnt mean i hate you. It means they disagree. Liz exactly. Congressman bost so weve got to get through this because, look, i didnt vote for the former president , and you know what i served with him in the state of illinois, but it wasnt that same rhetoric and just the vitriol. Liz the gotcha. Congressman bost yeah, and with your former, when you were talking with gary, the gotcha moments. Weve got to have governing moments. Liz exactly. A great point. The d. C. Media cycle of gotcha politics because the media knows they want that. Its good tv, they think, and some politicians play into it. Congressman mike bost, you made terrific points. Good luck to you. Congressman bost thank you. Liz under way, the 117th u. S. Open Golf Tournament in erin hills, wisconsin. Look whos here, liz claman, erin hills, it was a blimp, all this stuff happening out there, whats going on . Reporter yeah, but you know what . In the end, im not sure the u. S. Golf association could have hoped for a better day. Look at this. Sunshine, clouds, not too boiling and what do we have . We have 152 amateurs and pros among the best in the world right here in wisconsin, and its fascinating for the people of wisconsin because its the first time theyve ever been able to land a pro golf and amateur Golf Tournament such as the u. S. Open and quite a day of play. Let me get you caught up. Rickie fowler is in the lead. 7under par, for those of you who dont know golf, hes doing extraordinarily well. He ties with jack nicklaus, and i believe it was Tom Weisskopf back in 1980, maybe, they were the last ones to have 7 under par for this tournament or any opening round in relation to par. Listen, you have to go back several dozen years to get to this point. Good for rickie fowler. Jason day, 2over par. One of the big surprises on this gorgeous day is Dustin Johnson who won last year and going for a second win had somewhat of a rough day. Heres what he told fox business. Listen. Little bit of a struggle today. Felt like i played pretty well, three putted a few times and shot a few over. But im still right there in the mix. I need to go out tomorrow and shoot a good score. Reporter dont count out Dustin Johnson. He is very, very favored in certain groups of people around here. They absolutely love him, and he would be, if he wins this one, the next golfer to win backtoback wins of the u. S. Open since Curtis Strange nearly 30 years ago, theres a lot of excitement here, lizzie, a huge business story, 35,000 people coming every single day. 120 millions to the region. Lots of commerce, lots of schmoozing. Corporate tents, some cost 325,000. Lexus has 600 vehicles roaming around here, letting people test drive them. Can you imagine the uber people arent too thrilled, theyre letting people test drive them. That could change as the crowds get bigger over the weekend. You can watch all of this on fox sports as it plays out. Its exciting, have you amateurs and pros, theres the momen
