The two align and we already have a situation in hawaii where accidentally in honolulu people are found out by the police that they should not have a gun because they committed some type of crime. Hawaii is just going to use the upgraded technology that this new database provides through the fbi over the last couple of years to make sure that its not accidental that you find out a criminal that owns a gun who has registered it should not have that weapon. Because a lot of criminals are registering their guns. Its ludicrous. And i thought that, you know, this would be a good idea. Naturally. So i sat down and write an ad. And i had a picture with me. And they blew the picture up. And i had no idea whatsoever i thought maybe i would get five or six ladies hopefully who would be interested. Baron, youre shaking your head. Torrential rains leave towns completely under water. The National Weather<\/a> service calling this a 1,000year flood, as president obama declares a state of emergency there, sending federal disaster aid. Joining us live from the devastation this morning with the latest is West Virginia<\/a> senator joe manchin, whos seen these types of floods a number of times in that state. Senator, thanks for joining us this morning. Tell us about what conditions are like on the ground at this hour. Ive never seen anything like it in my life. I mean, 85 was something that\rwas similar to this. A bigger swath. But the devastation is just unbelievable. We still have 24 confirmed dead, and we still have about five unaccounted for and could be more. But our hearts and prayers go out to them. West virginians are doing what they do. The salvation army, red cross, everybody. I want to thank the president and his staff for acting so quickly on declaring at least three counties right now disaster areas, and well probably have more. So everyones doing everything they can. But this is unbelievable. I mean, ive never seen water this high. So, senator, it sounds like a lot of people were caught completely by surprise. So those of us who havent seen a flash flood, give us a sense of how quickly it happens. Let me just tell you, i was driving home thursday night when i got caught in virginia coming through clifton forge, covington, and the rivers were running across the interstate 64. When i got down into white sulfur springs, i looked over in\rthe areas where the greenbrier is and my friend jim justice who has that down in there, and i looked down and the whole area where you get off the interstate was covered, and you just cant imagine. When you see cars and their lying lights are still on, that means somebody was driving and got caught, and you just pray to god they got out. Thats how quick it came up. They were driving, and all of a sudden the car is half under water and the lights are still on. It was the most eerie feeling and sense of helplessness ive ever seen. And its not just in a consolidated area. You say 44 counties were devastated by flood waters there. You and your wife, sending out your thoughts and prayers to the families who have been impacted. Youve been able to talk on the ground with some of the victims of the flooding, i imagine. Does any story stand out to you in particular . Well, you know, we had one little boy that was washed away, and the grandmother was trying to get him when it happened. Its just devastating. Can you imagine . And then people got trapped in their house and they kept going up higher and higher and thinking weve never seen anything like this. So the basement gets flood. The first floor gets flooded. If they have to, they get on the roof, hoping for rescue. Everyones doing everything possible. But when you talk to the people and i flew over yesterday with the National Guard<\/a> looking down at some of the devastated areas, and ranell was totally covered. Unbelievable, one whole town, and we lost quite a few people in that town. The waters just rose so quickly. Its a deluge of water coming at us and never eased up at all, and people just couldnt get out. They were trying to get warnings to them, but they were stuck before it happened, before they could get them out. Senator, you know some of the criticism over the years in West Virginia<\/a> has to do with the removing of the tops of mountains in West Virginia<\/a>. Mountain top mining removal, right . Thats been the criticism. A number of the floods, where theres no root system to hold any of this water rushes right\rdown into these poor villages and these towns and wiped completely away. What do you have to say about that . This was not the case. Are you hearing this response that time . Its not the case at all. And the areas that got hit here and they talked about, you know, if you know our terrain, we dont have much flat land. And i know that some of the things have been very challenging, if you will, but a lot of the land can be put back into useful use, if you will, for productivity. This did not happen in those areas. Greenbrier counties, we dont have mountaintops. It was not attributed to the mining whatsoever or the runoff. There was so much water coming at us. Just like the system stalled right on top of this area and kept counterclockwise spinning and never moved and it hit for almost two days. So i understand the criticism, but its unfair in this situation. It really is. This was just a freak storm. A freak nature of a storm that\rthrew so much at us that theres no way now, our terrain is tough because weve got mountains and rivers and little valleys and they just could not take the water. Police chased them, but eventually lost them when they crashed their car into a wooded area, running through a swamp. The three inmates are career thieves and are not believed to be armed. And theres no shame in a summer job, even if youre the first lady of maine. The wife of the republican governor there is now waiting tables to help make ends meet. The governor brings home 70,000 a year, making him the lowest paid governor in the country. Make customers were surprised to see her running lobster rolls, but are praising her for her hard work, saying she should run for office next. One of the greatest governors in the nation, in my opinion. On the democratic side, Bernie Sanders<\/a> is out of the race. Hes woken up and admitted that. Hes admit hes not in the race. But he wants to influence the\rdnc platform, and thats being written now. Hes got some of what he wants, but not all. So the media painting this kumbaya moment between Hillary Clinton<\/a> and Bernie Sanders<\/a>. Its all water under the bridge, everythings fine. And yet Bernie Sanders<\/a> supporters upset this morning because its not fine. So heres whats in the dnc party platform. We have a draft of it that was published yesterday, just a draft, ending mass incarceration is in. 15 minimum wage is in. The right of workers who join or form a union. And the 15 an hour minimum wage, the language on that isnt Strong Enough<\/a> for some of sanders supporters. Theyre also upset about what was left out, and that includes harsher language on tpp, expansion of medicare into a universal Single Health<\/a> care payer system. A new language to elevate sovereignty as policy objective for the United States<\/a>. All this question about where are these bernie supporters going to go . Are they going to stay home . Are they going to sleep in . Are they going to go to donald trump, or are they going to\ractually vote for Hillary Clinton<\/a> . Hillary needs him and Bernie Sanders<\/a> says yes, im going to vote for Hillary Clinton<\/a>, but he certainly hasnt endorsed her or sent a mass email to all of his supporters or gone on tv or social media to say they should do so. So what was the Bernie Campaign<\/a> about . It was about the idea that the country is controlled and exploited by wall street and hillary is a hand maiden to wall street. By the way, she is. She was just endorsed by the former head of goldman sachs. She takes most of her money from wall street. So that hasnt changed. Really quickly, though, i hope our producers are listening. When they finish the democratic platform and the republican, i hope we can do a segment on that. I want to know whats in these platforms. Theres a lot of lunatic stuff in there. The republican platform calls for statehood for puerto rico. People should know whats in their platforms, i think. Meanwhile, will Bernie Sanders<\/a> become a Vice President<\/a> ial candidate with Hillary Clinton<\/a> . Not likely. But if that were to happen, 39 of bernie voters would likely switch and actually vote for Hillary Clinton<\/a>. 39 said yeah, if bernie is on the ticket, okay, id vote for them. These are registered democrats, the producers say. Yeah, but she has another problem on her hands. An uprising in the rust belt. So for the past five president ial cycles, we thought florida is key, ohio is key. This year, because of trumps unique appeal to those voters, it really is the rust belt that both campaigns are paying ton of attention to. We just talked to well, a couple of people, first of all. Senator joe manchin of West Virginia<\/a>, a rust belt state. An area where Hillary Clinton<\/a>, youll recall during the debate a couple of months ago, talked about coal miners. We had a Trump Supporters<\/a> from pittsburgh who was a former democrat. Hes now turned to donald trump. We asked him what made him flip. Listen. The Steel Industry<\/a> has gone backwards. You have china, whos exporting more steel than the United States<\/a> produces. And then you see what theyre doing to the miner. These people were hard workers, these families have generations\rof people there working in the mines, and now shes eliminating those jobs. You want a candidate thats honest, and donald trump is being honest, and everybody gets upset because hes being honest. He has a lot of logical answers. Hes calling people out. Hes not just sitting there dancing around politics. My favorite statistic of the week came from you yesterday, clayton. The Median Income<\/a> of trump voters in the primaries, 72,000. So these are not just unemployed factory workers. This is americas middle class. Its not just the upper midwest. And the media has been painting it as that. When i went to those diners across the country ahead of the primaries, everybody was really upset about that who were Trump Supporters<\/a>. Like, im educated, i have a degree, this is what i do. Weve heard a lot from donald trump on this. Not exactly clear what theme hes trying to push. But what is Hillary Clinton<\/a>s position, do you think, or brexit and what will it be Going Forward<\/a> . Well, i think in terms of this campaign, her position and that is what her position is on everything, which is that these are dangerous times, and donald trump is unfit to be president. And in on odd way, it allows her to take a pass on what her Economic Policy<\/a> is, what her Foreign Policy<\/a> is, what her policy towards brexit is. She just says, im a steady hand, i know what im doing, and hes sitting there holding News Conference<\/a>s on a golf course. Right. We havent seen her on camera talk about this. Is it enough for these surrogates to go out there . You mentioned this press conference. All of the networks had donald trump on this golf course that morning. It was like looking everyones, like, looking for him to get the answers to get the National Pulse<\/a> of the brexit. Where was Hillary Clinton<\/a> . Well, its interesting. I mean, she didnt have a public\rschedule, and, you know, it is a little odd. I dont know that it will matter a lot. Im sure shell be on the campaign trail monday or tuesday and shell say something, and people are going to listen to what she has to say. Theres no question that there are some parallels between brexit and the Trump Campaign<\/a>. This was a populist, grass roots movement, antiimmigration, antitrade, antiglobalization, and the idea that its leaving millions of people behind, and that sounds a lot like the trump platform. There are also obviously some big differences between whats going on in britain, where they were voting against a bureaucracy in brussels. And here in the United States<\/a> where its going to be a choice between trump and clinton. You know, look. Theres no question you know, its funny. A lot of people thought that trump made a big mistake going off the campaign trail and going to sell his golf course, to push his golf course. As it turned out, he was in\rscotland at exactly the right time for brexit. I think a lot of people wish he just held a serious News Conference<\/a> separately from trying to pitch his golf course and how good the 14th hole was. But thats all right. And he had some missteps and things he said while he was there, too. Donald trump has said hes thinking about running a more disciplined campaign. Corey lewandowski is out. Paul manafort is in. What guests do you have relating to that coming up . Well be talking to newt gingrich, one of trumps top advisers, and also a potential running mate. Well also be talking to clin n Clintons Campaign<\/a> manager. Theres a case for trump to make, and you heard it and you can see it in terms of brexit. Im with you, shes with the special interests. I want to change and tear down the establishment. Shes just a perpetuation of it. Its not really even school. Its sort of nursery school. And 3 is too young to be teaching them specifically a terrorist drill. You want to teach them about safety, following instructions. And they should practice a drill. But terrorism thats way too young. As a school counselor, tom, what are the longterm effects of this . Im right in the middle of it as a counselor and as a private practice therapist. What i see now are more kids than ive ever seen in my entire career with major anxiety disorders. So we have to be careful. I agree with darby. If we start pumping into these kids minds fear, terrorism types of messages, by the time theyre in middle school, those things will have taken root, and you might have some problems on your hands as a parent. Steve, darby talked about teaching them safety and following rules orderly if something were to happen. But you have an interesting take on this, which is to teach them without teaching them. So theyre not really aware its like hiding vegetables\rinside of food so theyre getting their vegetables. Ill give you an example. When i teach antiSexual Assault<\/a> techniques to girls 8, 9, 10. They dont know that theyre doing antiSexual Assault<\/a>s. They just think that theyre doing selfdefense stuff with steve. They have no clue, not then, they will later, that these are selfdefense specific to Sexual Assault<\/a> prevention and kidnapping. So how do we talk to them . With a 3yearold, again, they will have no idea what terrorism or a shooter is. And we really dont want to teach 3yearolds to go to the bathroom and stand up on top of the toilet. Because they think in very concrete terms. If you tell them to stand on top of the toilet, they might not put the toilet seat down. They dont have great balance. It just doesnt make sense. So we teach them is, follow the directions of an adult in charge. Go through the drill, practice. Kids at that age learn by practicing and repetitive play. So what youre saying is true. But we have to really make sure its appropriate to what they developmentally can understand. And more importantly, i think, as parents, anybody watching right now, what you have going on in the background of your house, whats on tv, whats on a computer and so forth, theres way too much information that kids are exposed to. Its a really important point. Kids pick up that stuff. And, you know, if you have to have an open dialogue, open communications with your children, because were in an age, where, listen, its going to happen one day. And by having an open dialogue, age appropriate yes, youre going to talk to a 5yearold differently than you would talk to an 8yearold. But you have to have open line communications. If they dont get it from you, theyre going to get it from the internet, from their friends. So you be the source and quell it. We also have this overreaction. We love to overreact in this country to events like this, right . More likely to probably see a tornado come through and have a school fire drill. The mother i would be more concerned, what are they teaching my child at school that theyre climbing up on top of a toilet in the bathroom than, you\rknow, about a shooter. When i looked up the story, i saw a comment and somebody said the child is more likely to get hurt falling off the toilet. Falling and hitting their head on the toilet. Than from a terrorist coming. And this looks like cold war stuff, too. Im reminded of pictures of kids hiding under the desks in the 1950s. My early years in school, we did bombing drills. And so its just a new threat. But weve been dealing with it. Fire drills for many, many years. And i agree with darby. Like stop, drop, and roll, we have to make it simple and keep it real easy for them so that they know one, two, three. Make it simple so they can follow the rules. Theyll be in direction of a teacher, they have to be. Because they cant do it themselves. But when they reach a certain age, they do know when theyre in fourth or fifth or sixth grade. You can see theres a string of news clips from breaking news this week in addition to clips of a press gathering with donald\rtrump in scotland. Heres a piece of the narration of the ad. Global markets are plummeting. Every president is tested by world events. But donald trump thinks about how his golf resort can profit from them. While the clinton team is working to promote steadiness and predictability, it didnt take long for a response from the trump team. He was critical of clinton for not only supporting the stay vote, but also being quiet, he says, after. And shortly after the ad release, we saw trump tweet in response. He says, crooked Hillary Clinton<\/a> who called brexit 100 wrong along with obama is now spending wall street money on an ad on my correct call. So clinton is stumping today, but trump does not have any scheduled events. Its unclear if well hear more back and forth. Trump says hes trying to run a more disciplined campaign for the white house. He fired his Campaign Manager<\/a> corey lewandowski, and heres how he summed it up. Watch. Your campaign seems to have found a new sense of discipline. Would i be wrong in reading it that way . Well, maybe its a little bit different, and im doing a lot of television. And frankly, i dont mind because i want to get the word out. I can speak only positively about corey. And we are doing it. Its a different tact, theres no question about it. And were going a little bit different. But its going to be i mean, i think it seems to be very successful. I have to say, just as an observer of this, the Trump Campaign<\/a> now seems very much like the Trump Campaign<\/a> during the primaries. Well, there are similarities, but, you know, all campaigns mature with time. And, you know, whats happened with the changes in the Trump Campaign<\/a> is something that we see in virtually every successful campaign. What changes are we talking about . Yeah, what does a disciplined campaign look like, doctor. Carson . Well, i think youre going to see much more pivoting toward the issues themselves. And trying to help people to understand the difference between the conservatives and the progressives. Because this is really about more than republicans and democrats. This is about an american way of life and what we have traditionally expected in our identity. Are we willing to give that up for the sake of Political Correctness<\/a> . For the sake of being part of the one world group . You know, i think this can be structured in a way that will become extremely clear to anybody what theyre voting about. Dr. Carson, mr. Trump has\rbeen accused of not listening to some of his advisers. Do you feel like he listens to you, and is he listening to the people around him enough . I think he listens quite well. Hes a very, very smart man. So hes going to do things that are wise. For example, youre talk about Vice President<\/a> ial pick. You know, the traditional politician says well, lets see who can bring me florida, who can bring me ohio, who can bring me this demographic . Hes not looking at it that way. Hes looking in terms of who can be actually helpful in helping to govern in a way that is responsive to the needs of the people. Who can take on large segments of government and oversee those and make sure that those. P programs are brought to fruition . Thats the way a business person and a logical person thinks, not like a politician. So do any names come to mind, any idea for a Vice President<\/a> ial pick that would fit that bill . There are lots of names that come to mind, but i dont think i want to get into that right now. So, dr. Carson, i dont want you to laugh at me, but i heard from a relatively sane person who claimed to have information that they are thinking about ivanka trump as his running mate. Is she old enough . I believe she is old enough. I think the threshold is 30 for that. Have you heard that, is my question . I have not heard that, i must admit. Okay. Lots of rumors. It would be intriguing. It did cross my inbox. Its going to be interesting, that i can guarantee you. Its going to be interesting. And when you think about it, its going to make a great deal of sense. What do you make of Hillary Clinton<\/a>s response to the brexit vote . Donald trump out there, obviously, in front of the cameras, beating that drum that she made a huge mistake, aligning herself with president obama. She was wrong on the brexit vote. We havent really heard from her at all. What do you make of that . Should she have been out there . Would it have helped her in any way . Well, no. If you had said the things that she said you would be hiding, too. That shows that she does think, obviously. But, you know, at some point, honesty must prevail. And i hope, you know, she will come out and just, you know, talk about it. And put the right kind of positive light on it. And talk about how we can work with the british people and their aspirations, because i believe that the average brit thinks a lot like the average american in terms of their independence.
