This will be an election of kavanaugh, the caravan, law and order and common sense. We will ask our panel about President Trump posing message for the midterm. And, after disaster strikes, our power player of the week, worldfamous chef jose stepped in. People are always in need of a hot meal. Thats what we do. All right now on fox news sunday. Hello again from fox news in washington. 17 days after the disappearance of jamaal, the saudi government is finally offering its account of what happened to him. Much of the world is not buying it. The saudi say he was killed in a fist fight in their consulate in instant goal. They have arrested 18 people involved in the case and fired five top officials, some with close ties to the Saudi Crown Prince. President trump said he finds the report credible but will work with congress to find ways to punish the saudi government. Joining me now from kentucky, republican senator rand paul, a key member of the Senate Foreign relationsra committee. Senator, lets start with your reaction to the saudi account that he was killed by accident in a fist fight at the consulate and that the Saudi Crown Prince had nothing to do with it. Do you believe the saudi accoun account. Absolutely not. I think its insulting to anyone who is analyzing this with any type of intelligent background to think that a fistfight led to a dismemberment with a bone saw. So no. I think we should put this brazen attack and. Murder in context with saudi arabia. They have basically been the largest state sponsor of radical islam and violent jihad. They sponsor thousands of me madrasas that teach hatred of christian and jews and hindus around the world so this isnt the first instance. This is just another in thein long of line instance of the saudi insults to the civilized world. Them to get to the larger issue in just a moment but i want to stay with this at this point. What do you think was the involvement of the Saudi Crown Prince. The king has absolved him and has put them in charge of the overhaul of saudi intelligence. I think it stretches to believe that the crown prince wasnt involved in this, and i think thats the way they will write this off. People in saudi arabia ought to be aware that when you are told what to do you go and do it and then they will execute you and put all the blame on someone else. There is no way 15 people were sent from saudi arabia toer turkey without the approval of the crown prince. We have to be stronger and sanction people and pretend like were doing something. We really need to discontinue our arms sales to saudi arabia and have a long and serious discussion about whether or d not they want to be an ally or an enemy. The arrest of 18 people in the case, heres what they had to say. I think its a big step. Its a lot of people. I think its a great first step event does President Trump know something that you dont or do you think hes covering for the saudi. I think the saudis are an authoritarian government. They are directed from the top down and you dont have people just going off and doing things on their own. I feel certain the crown prince was involved in he directed this. Thats why think we cannot continue to have relations for him. I think sanctions dont go far enough, i think we need to look at the arms sale because this is not just about this journalist being killed, its about the war in yemen where tens of thousands are being killed. Its about them spreading hatred of christians and jews and hindus throughout the world. Thousands and thousands teaching radicalsp violence against the west. The saudis have not acted as our friend and they need to change their behavior. I understand that but im asking you directly about the president s reaction. He says hee finds credible and account that you find incredible. Why do you think hes doing that . I dont know the reasoning, or i cant answer for the thought process on this. I can only say i think many of us looking at the situation think this couldnt happen in an authoritarian government without the crown prince being involved. All right. Lets talk about punishment and what to do about it. The president says he is going to work with congress to try to find a way to sanction move saudi, but he made it clear one of the things he doesnt want to do. Here he is. I would prefer that we dont use asen on retribution, canceling 110 billion worth. Of work which means 600,000 jobs. Last year long before this you came within four votes of blocking further arms sales of the saudis. First of all, what evening of the chances but you can get those four votes and block them this year and what about the president s argument that this means hundreds of thousands of american jobs . I think if we were to have a vote in the next couple weeks on whether or not to sell arms to saudi arabia we would winha overwhelmingly. I think thehe powers that be will try to prevent us from having that vote. They need to announce a cyst on chances for an transpacific case of arms being sold them my thought is they will avoid doing that as long as possible. In regard to jobs, i dont think arms should ever be seen as a job program. The sophistication is part of our national defense. This isnt something thats just owned by private common engine companies. I dont think we should ever sell it to any country unless its in our National Security interest. The war in yemen increases our risk. It makes us less secure and more likely to beem involved in another war in yemen. I think we shoulddd not be supplying the saudis with bombs. They been indiscriminately killing civilians. In the last month 50 schoolchildren were killed in school bus. Of awi they killed 150 people at a funeral procession. The saudis have notsi been acting and adjust fashion. Yemen is one of the poorest plaintiff on the earth. Millions of people face starvation. Over a Million People had cholera and they continue to block their port. No, i dont think theres a National Security reason for us to be involved in the war in yemen. Thats where our arms are going. I would cut them up. Its the only thing that will listen to. Anar interesting figure, veldman pruden talked about this and said he believes the u. S. Has a double standard. He noted that after the alleged poisoning of that russian spy in britain that the u. S. Expelled 60 Russian Diplomats and imposed sanctions, and he looked at the lack of action so far inside that is a double standard. One,a does prude veldman pruden have a point and beyond blocking arms sales, you dont think the white house will even offer them, what elsend should the u. S. Do if anything . I think there is a double standard, and i think the saudis need to be treated as who they are in the context of who they are. I dont think they are friendly ally. They have been spreading hatred for decade after decade. With regard to whether we sanction them, i think the arms sales will go on. I think they will avoid announcing the arms sales to s. Try to prevent us from blocking them. Im not saying the Trump Administration will stop arms sales, i think they will continue and i think this isem a danger that congress will act tough on and pretend to do something which is sanctions. Im not even calling for sanctions against saudi arabia in general. I dont think we should quit trading with them, i think wear weshould specifically quit aiding and abetting them. You have been a real skeptic of our relationship of saudi arabia for many years and youve certainly given evidence to that today. Heres the counterargument from President Trump. He said we depend on saudi arabia for cheaper oil or cheaper oil. We depend on them as a potential counter way to iran and its ambitions in the r middle east and that we can, we hope the saudi arabia will help us broker a peace deal between the palestinians and rothe israelis. Do you think he is wrong on all those fronts . I think there is a thousandyearold war in the middle east between sunni and shieh andea saudi arabia is pitted up against the rent. The biggest thing that destabilize theii middle east and the president agrees is the iraq war. There was much more of a balance of the middle east at that time. If you look at military spending, the saudis and the allies spend eight times more than iran. There is an arms race, but when we supply arms to saudi arabia, iran response. Will we complain about the iranians having Ballistic Missiles that they are developing, they are doing that in response to the arming of the saudis. Its a bilateral arms race that goes onn and on. I wouldnt continue it. I dont think we need the saudi crude we have incredible leverage. The air force is entirely american planes. They cant last months without parts and mechanics to help them run their airports. We train their pilots. They are dependent on us and we need to tell them to behave. Behave, not going to that includes cutting off the funding to all the schools that teach hatred of christians, jews andg hindus. Were running out of time, i want to get to one final subject. It appears President Trump is about tot pull out, to tell the russians were about to pull out of the imf mediumrange missile treaty that ronald ragan signed with gorbachev back in 1987. That heres the president yesterday afternoon. We stayed in the agreement and weve honored the agreement. Russia has notun honored the agreement. We are going to pull out. The president said he will stay in thehe treaty only if russia and china will abide by its terms. I think its a big mistake to get out of this historic agreement that reagan and gorbachev signed. This is a big part of lichens legacy and we should not get rid of it. We went from 60000 Nuclear Tipped Missiles down to 15000. It was a historic agreement. Ive asked the president and advised him that he should appoint Nuclear Negotiators to actually work with thead soviets. We have complaints that are not you compliance and they have complaints that some ofmp ours are not in compliance. Lets have a rational discussion and see who can. [inaudible]] you said you think john bolton should stay out of it. Why him personally . I think hes advising the president to get out of the inf treaty and i dont think he recognizes the importanten achievement on this. I spent an hour with gorbachev a couple months ago and they still regardless reduction and the disaster that would be nuclear war, they view it in a sincere manner that reducing the arms was very important, and i dont want to see another Nuclear Arms Race with russia or with any other country. Im all for trying to sign agreement with china but that would have to be a brandnew agreement. Theres no reason to end the agreement we have with russia. Senator paul, thank you for your time. He up next we bring in our sunday group to discuss what happened to jamal. Also what it means for relations between our two countries. 10. 9. Guidance is internal. 6. 5. 4. 3. 2. 1. Dont forget, saudi arabia is a partner against iran and missiles and what their saudi arabia is our partner, our ally against iran and against missiles and against what theyre doing, trying to take over theri middle east. President trump standing by our alliance with saudi arabia that now faces a tough task going forward. Its time for our sunday group, speaker of the house Newt Gingrich, former, democratic congresswoman jane harman director of the woodrowor wilson center, and mark short, former director of legislative affairs for President Trump. Speaker gingrich, what you make of the saudi arabia account of what happened to jamaal and who was responsible and how severely do you think we should punishke them. Its insultingly stupid. The idea that this guy walked in the room with 15upe security people and they havent have, were willing to dismember him and get rid of him and happen to be here, this is just stupid. Wise the president saying its credible. The president is trying to walk a tight rope. I think the big problem, not a small one. On one hand you dont want to break the alliances and on the other hand, you cannot teach a 33yearold crown prince that he can get away with things that are this outrageous and this stupid or he will be out of control for the next 40 years. What would you do. Is selecte sanctions and theyre going to be very clear about it. I also think, im guessing, but my guess isy the truth, this hurts the salaries to live the stupidly. Secretary of state pompeo met with the Saudi Crown Prince this week and took some criticism for appearing overly friendly and such a serious situation. Heres what pompeo said when he returned to washington. I think its important to remember that we have had a long strategic relationship since 1932 with the kingdom of saudi arabia. I want to address exactly the dilemma, the conundrum that the speaker was talking about. On one hand, what apparently happened is unacceptable, on the other hand, we do have strategic interest with saudi arabia. How do we balance all that. Our Foreign Policy is based on values and interest. Values that we have our rule of law, freedom off press, interest that we have aree having saudi arabia as an ally against the behavior among other things, and maybe helping Jared Kushner with his two state solution which doesnt seem to be going very far between israel and palestine. At any rate, murder, i totally agree with Newt Gingrich, these are neither our values or our interest. I think in addition to sanctions it would be good to talk to the king about perhaps moving them sideways for a while and putting an adult in charge of saudi arabia such as the intelligence chief or even the foreign minister who used to be the ambassador here who is highly regarded. Youve much better sense of this than i do. Do you think if you were to go to the king and say that that we have a vote, we can apply pressure. And on that we have a vote, but yes i think we can apply pressure. It is also true, obviously, there are major Financial Transactions pending, not just with aerospace firms, but also with hightech firms. I think the Modernization Program, and i actually think i agree with this was going in the right direction, it would be the excesses that are derailing it. I think betty arabia wants and needs a modern future. They better do a course correction here. Mark, lets talk about the realities in congress that used to be your job. That was until very recently the legislative Affairs Director for President Trump. As we were discussing with rand paul, he came within for both last year of blocking an arms sale to the salaries. What you think are the prospects for any future arms sales in the foreseeable future, and how tough do you think congress, because a lot of republicans are talking tough on us, how do you think, how tough do you think there will get. I actually think thear prospects are greater than, i think very little has gone through. Particularly if they are responding quickly. I think the risk is much more significant. What about other sanctions. I think that they go together. If they dont do that i think you will see a vacuum in which they move more quickly. Chuck, this is personal forin you because he was a colleague of yours at the washington post. Read your reaction to the saudi accounts and President Trump seemingly acceptance of that. I think it reminds me of that famous phrase from watergate, the limited hang out. This is what you do when youve been caught, your cover has been blown and theres really no denying it anymore so you let a little bit of the truth out or you try to shape a more plausible cover story. They been saying they left that conflict alive. That had been there previous view of the matter. The story is, its not a credible story. Its their desperate attempt to preserve the crown prince in his position. Theyre evens willing to sacrifice somee senior officials at least two scapegoating them and firing them. Acthe problem with his reaction has been that it has taken him a long time to declare this was evil and stupid. His first reaction was Something Like its not an american citizen and is not on our soil. That was consistent with some things they set on the campaign about how we americans, we kill a lot of people and so on, he dug himself a deep hole and i dont think hes all the way out of it yet. I agree with what the congressman was saying before. Theres a lot here that you are trying to balance. I think the president is trying to give them a little bit ofenc space. Pretty came out he said he does not believe the account is true as a result of a fistfight. He has acknowledged that. I do think theres a lot there trying to balance. The iran funding is killing westerners throughout the middle east and saudi arabia is our ally. That is a challenge we need too navigate. They need to be more aggressive. I want to bring the congresswoman in because
