The cruise ship will be allowed to dock in oakland tomorrow which will be a big relief for the 3500 people on board. Its been kept off the coast while authorities came up with a game plan. 21 people tested positive for the coronavirus on friday, 19 of them are crewmembers. Now the plan is to get the infected people to local hospitals on monday. All the california residents will be taken to either Travis Air Force base or a naval station for a 14 day quarantine period. All other passengers will be taken to military bases in texas or georgia for quarantine, and the crew will go back out to sea and be isolated there for two two weeks. There were tense moments on a cruise ship docked in long beach, california. A passenger on the ship got sick and was tested for the virus. That test came back negative last night, allowing passengers to disembark this morning. And today, the state department issued its new travel advisory saying u. S. Citizens especially those with underlying conditions should not travel by cruise ship. The covid 19 death toll has gone up again in washington state. Test results on two elderly people, who died earlier in the week, came back positive. So now there have been 18 deaths in the state. 16 of them connected to this nursing home in kirkland, washington, just north of seattle. Dozens of other residents and staff are either hospitalized or also dealing with symptoms. More than 20 paramedics who were spotted to the Life Care Center are moving to a motel in kent washington, the newest Quarantine Center in the state. King county bought the property and anchored city leaders and many residents in kent. We were blindsided by this decision that they would pick this site in our city. The pentagon says it is working hard to ensure troops worldwide are kept safe as the coronavirus spreads. As you mentioned, the three servicemembers are reportedly infected with the virus and that includes a marine, currently being treated in the u. S. The marine is being monitored at a fort 20 miles southwest of washington, d. C. Officials say the marine became sick in mid february but was hospitalized only a few days ago. This is an instance we believe of travel associated covid infection, not locally transmitted. He did come home and did not report symptoms until he was home a couple days. Officials have not said which country the marine was working in when he became infected. His family is being quarantined as a precaution. They are working with the pentagon to try to figure out who else the marine may have been come in contact with. Mark esper says his department is working hard to prepare for disruptions the virus may cause. That includes ensuring the pentagon can carry out its operations in any scenario. This is i think the really important economic point right now is, you know, the United States has a very consumerdriven economy, Consumer Spending accounts for more than two thirds of total economic output. Consumers have been spending because unemployment is very low and incomes are rising. As long as that remains the case, we should think that the economy will be in pretty steady shape. If Companies Start laying off workers, the Consumer Spending story ends. I think right now, as we speak, the economic story is going to be driven by whats happening in boardrooms. Are Companies Going to respond to the potential for and were already seeing, you know, downturns in spending on things like air travel. Are they going to respond to that by laying off workers . You know, right now i think the story is kind of encouraging. You know, back in the 90s and the 2000s, we saw mass layoffs when there was a shock to the economy. I will give you an example. After 9 11, the terror attacks, the air line industry and boeing laid off 100,000 workers, within ten days. Right now were seeing companies do hiring freezes, but not mass layoffs. And hopefully it will stay that way. If it does, the economy has a chance to hang in there. Jon lets look at that february jobs report that you referenced earlier. 273,000 new jobs added. The Unemployment Rate drops down to 3 1 2 , and average Hourly Earnings are up 3 year over year. You say that the coronavirus, what, could wipe all of this out or at least take it down . Well, i mean, what those numbers mean is that is the economy had a Solid Foundation before coronavirus hit. That 3 1 2 Unemployment Rate is very important because what it means is that companies have been having a very hard time finding workers. They have been complaining that theyre not finding qualified workers. So i think in that kind of environment, a lot of companies are going to be reluctant to let workers go because they have had such a hard time finding people. It gives the economy a little bit of breathing room, while we try to sort out the health risks that are confronted with coronavirus. If the virus keeps spreading, you know, were going to see less eating out. Were going to see less congregation in movie theaters and in sports events. Because at the moment joe biden is getting more votes. And it comes down to that. Sanders is really criticizing biden at this point for what he calls the establishment embrace of biden. And he uses that word in a very sort of derogatory sense, because he after all in his own mind is running a revolution, and its against the establishment. But whats really happening when he refers to the establishment, you know, it is basically more voters, not just people who have endorsed him, other moderate candidates who were running for president , who have now endorsed joe biden, but voters in general. And were seeing this in exit polls from recent primaries, jon. Our reporter has done some crunching of numbers, and in a lot of cases, particularly in virginia, you saw more voters coming out of the polls saying they had migrated to the center of the party. Thats really good for joe biden. It is not good for Bernie Sanders. Jon so many of the former competitors who have dropped out have now endorsed joe biden. Is that because they dont like the direction that they think Bernie Sanders would take the party . Is it because theyre all pushing for a Vice President ial nomination or a little bit of both . Well, it is probably a little bit of both. In some cases, maybe a lot more of the latter. But clearly the former. These candidates, buttigieg, klobuchar, now kamala harris, they were all in the same lane with biden. They may have had their disagreements over particular policies, but for the most part, they spoke to the moderate in the democratic party. And they saw what happened in 2018. A lot of suburban republicans migrating to moderate democrat candidates that year and turning the house democratic. Theyre very keen about not just the policies that make up the moderate lane, but what happens to the down ballot. And i think you are seeing a lot of support for biden emerging from that down ballot, that is, the senators and the Congress People and the state senators that are running in states and governorships. They are gravitating to biden because they are concerned that a Bernie Sanders candidacy, which is what donald trump wants, he views sanders as the weaker of the candidates might damage voter embrace of the down ballot. I think you are seeing, yeah, the establishment, you know, rally around biden, but thats basically other politicians who have similar views. A millionaire real estate heir is now on trial for murder, that caught the nations attention through a hbo documentary. He is charged with murdering his friend and long time confidant susan berman after she threatened to talk to detectives about the disappearance of his first wife from 1982. Jacqui heinrich is following details of that trial in new york city. Robert durst is only facing charges for the murder of his best friend susan berman, who was shot to death in her Beverly Hills home in 2000. But investigators believe durst also killed his late wife kathy durst in 1982 and they say he executed berman nearly two decades later to stop her from talking to police about kathys disappearance. Kathys body has never been found. The hbo documentary the jinx led investigators to arrest durst in 2015. Lawyers discouraged him from speaking to filmmakers, but prosecutors say he ignored his counsel because he loves media attention, ultimately handing police fodder in their case for clips where he talks about beating his wife. What got the most attention was a hot mic moment caught off camera where it appeared that durst admits to the killing. [inaudible]. Prosecutors argue in court just before durst shot susan berman to hide his secret, he stockpiled money, setting up a false identity as an elderly woman going into hiding in Galveston Texas and arranging a marriage of convenience with a woman he previously dated Debrah Charatan who tack took care of his finances. She was married to another man. Prosecutors say he shot and killed his neighbor morris black because he may have known too much. He was acquitted of blacks murder. Prosecutors say all three deaths are linked. According to prosecutors, durst went to all these lengths over a lie. Susan berman told durst police had asked her over kathys disappearance. But at the time she was shot, investigators say they hasnt spoken to her yet. She was reportedly going through some financial hardships at the time. Durst is pleading not guilty to the charges. Jon . There will be some of that. Its been fantastic for a lot of folks today. 67 degrees in chicago. Close to 60 here in new york city. The colder air continues to linger back across some of the western states the Higher Elevations. Tracking a couple systems, one being rain currently lifting across texas and farther to the north. It is going to be this system, the back side of it where you see some of that snow over the next couple of days and probably some freezing rain. We will look at the future forecast for that. You start to see some of the pink colors and some of the purple colors and then the Higher Elevations, those are the areas where you are seeing snow. Otherwise it is going to be a big rain maker across areas in the mississippi delta. Forecast of precipitation for the next week. You put it in motion there, obviously a whole lot of rain. That read is that really heavy rain i was just showing you. But the areas of white, that snow across colorado and running into kansas and then stretching farther off to the north, Higher Elevations again in montana, those are spots where were seeing snow. Otherwise, though, a lot of folks are going to continue to enjoy some warm air. This is what were look at for monday into tuesday. Again, spots 60s, 70s.
